Comment on “variational formulation for the equilibrium condition of a conducting fluid in an electric field”

Sujatha et al. have suggested that the Taylor cone hypothesis is wrong and they have derived equations for the equilibrium shape of a conducting fluid in an electric field. We examine their arguments and suggest that their paper may be incorrect in some respects. We find that Taylor's omission of the pressure difference term in the Laplace formula and his use of a single Legendre function for the potential are correct for the situation that he considered and that consequently the Taylor cone hypothesis is justified. The shape of real liquid metal ion sources appears to be well represented by a jet-like protrusion model which approaches a Taylor cone shape in the low current limit.     

JWKB connection for radial wave functions and bound-state/free-state duality

The oscillatory and non-oscillatory regions of radial wave functions are connected by the use of spherical Bessel functions or Coulomb wave functions. The resulting formulae for the magnitude of the wave function at the origin in terms of the energy spectrum are used to exhibit the appropriate form of boundstate/free-state duality.

The comparison of a series of small clinical trials into the treatment of Acute Myelogenous Leukaemia at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, is described using a previously published mathematical model. The work demonstrates the value of a coherent presentation and analysis of available information in assisting clinicians in their decision-making.     

Micromethod for phosphorus determination in research laboratories

A simple micromethod for serum inorganic phosphorus determination is described. Its reproducibility, accuracy, and nominal cost make its use particularly valuable in research laboratories where small sample size is mandatory. There is less variation in this method than a comparable commercial micromethod.     

A characterization theorem for the nearest point mappings of linearC-sets

Summary Suppose U is a set, F is a field of subsets of U, P_AB is the set of all bounded finitely additive functions from F into ℝ, and P _A ⁺ is the set of non-negative valued elements of P_AB. In this paper it is proved that if β is a mapping from P _A ⁺ into P _A ⁺ then β is the nearest point mapping for a linear C-set iff β commutes with a certain collection of nonlinear mappings. Photoelectric thresholds for tetrahedrally coordinated semiconductors

The photoelectric threshold, Φ, is calculated for a variety of tetrahedrally coordinated semiconductors using the Bond Orbital Model. The variation of Φ with anion component and charge transfer is discussed. These results are compared with experiment and good agreement is found. The pressure dependence of Φ is also discussed.
