Synthesis of laterally substituted bistolane liquid crystals

Methods for synthesizing bistolane liquid crystal materials with lateral methyl and ethyl substituents are presented. Some of the bistolanes are nematic at room temperature. These highly conjugated mesogens exhibit wide nematic ranges, small enthalpies of fusion, high birefringence and modest viscosity. Their potential applications for flat panel displays employing light scattering or Bragg reflection and for infrared optically phased arrays are foreseeable.     

Indium-mediated allenylation of arylacyl bromides in a route for the synthesis of substituted furans

A three-step, single purification procedure has been developed for the concise synthesis of substituted furans from arylacyl bromides.

Different ratios of methane/air in the low power arc discharges assisted methane combustion were studied at atmospheric pressure. Plasma emission spectroscopy was recorded by an optical emission spectrometer. The possible physical and chemical reaction process and mechanisms were discussed. With a plasma in the on or off state, the physical appearances of the methane combustion flame were observed and compared, the temperature of the flame in the main combustion zone was investigated. The gas compositions of CH₄, CO and O₂ were analyzed by the gas chromatography and flue gas analyzer. The results showed that when plasma was in the on state, the temperature of flame increased and the combustion efficiency enhanced in stable combustion due to decrease of CH₄, CO and O₂; the combustion enhancement was more obvious at low ratio of methane/air; the rich combustion limits in terms of the ratio of methane/air was extended from 16% to 21%.     

Controlled fabrication of hierarchically microstructured surfaces via surface wrinkling combined with template replication

In this paper,we present a simple method by combining surface wrinkling and template replication to create a series of hierarchical structures on polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) elastomer.The primary stable lined patterns are formed by duplicating commercialized compact disk and digital versatile disk with PDMS.The secondary microscale patterns are from surface wrinkling,which is elicited by oxygen plasma(OP) treatment of the prestrained PDMS stamp followed with the prestrain release.By systematically varying the OP exposure duration,the prestrain,and the angle(θ) between the primary pattern orientation and the prestrain direction,we obtain highly ordered well-organized composite patterns from different patterning techniques and with different length scales and mechanical stabilities.     

Three new compounds from Sarcandra glabra

One new sesquiterpene lactone,1 α,8 α,9 α-trihydroxyeudesman-3(4),7(11)-dien-8 β,12-olide(1) and two new phenylpropanoidsubstituted catechin glycosides,glabraoside C(2) and glabraoside D(3) were isolated from the whole plant of Sarcandra glabra. Their structures were established by the analyses of spectral and chemical evidences.

Parameters optimization and phase analysis of decentered grating stretchers

A decentered grating stretcher for chirped pulse amplification systems is analyzed with oblique meridional ray tracing. Several formulae and conclusions are developed to design and optimize the stretcher. On basis of an analytical phase expression with an explicit significance, the expressions of the second-, third- and approximate fourth-order phases at the central wavelength are presented with only independent variables. These simplify the parameter design for this kind of stretcher and the phase compensation design of the whole amplifier system, which has been demonstrated with a practical example.     

Photophysics of Silicon Phthalocyanines in Aqueous Media

Phthalocyanines have been used as photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents because of their uniquely favorable optical properties and high photostability. They have been shown to be highly successful for the treatment of cancer through efficient singlet‐oxygen (¹O₂) production. However, due to their hydrophobic properties, the considerations of solubility and cellular location have made understanding their photophysics in vitro and in vivo difficult. Indeed, many quantitative assessments of PDT reagents are undertaken in purely organic solvents, presenting challenges for interpreting observations during practical application in vivo. With steady‐state and time‐resolved laser spectroscopy, we show that for axial ligated silicon phthalocyanines in aqueous media, both the water:lipophile ratio and the pH have drastic effects on their photophysics, and ultimately dictate their functionality as PDT drugs. We suggest that considering the presented photophysics for PDT drugs in aqueous solutions leads to guidelines for a next generation of even more potent PDT agents.     

壳聚糖的改性及其纳米粒子的制备

通过壳聚糖上的氨基与硬脂酸和硫辛酸的羧基脱水缩合反应,将硬脂酸和硫辛酸接枝在壳聚糖上,引入的疏水性基团使修饰的壳聚糖具有两亲性。对修饰壳聚糖残留的自由氨基进行甲基化,使氨基的pKa值由6.6增加到6.8~7.1。修饰的壳聚糖在水介质中经超声分散即可形成纳米粒子,纳米粒子的Zeta电位为正值,说明修饰壳聚糖中残留的氨基和甲基化的氨基处于纳米粒子的表面。纳米粒子经二硫苏糖醇还原,然后经空气中的氧气氧化,在纳米粒子中形成二硫键交联结构。
