Southern California comprises of a wide range of diverse landscapes and environments, from high mountains with glacial and periglacial sediments to deserts with large sand dunes, extensive alluvial fans and ephemeral playas. Highly active tectonic processes has exposed ancient (c. 2 Ga) plutonic and metamorphic basement from deep within the crust, while similar Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks are also common. A rich array of volcanic lithologies extending into the late Quaternary complement many thick sedimentary sequences that formed in equally diverse ancient environments typical of an accreting active continental margin. In some locations, notably in the Coachella Valley close to Palm Springs and the Salton Sea, low OSL sensitivity and poor characteristics restrict the application of the quartz SAR protocol to date late Pleistocene and Holocene fluvial sediments. In other locations such as the Malibu coastline, high sensitivity of the quartz OSL signal is observed, despite local source rocks being dominated by volcanic lithologies. Problems of poor quartz characteristics, along with uncertainty in predicting quartz OSL behavior for future dating campaigns poses a significant problem for projects, in particular for neotectonic contexts. While K-feldspar has been used extensively to date eolian and fluvial sediments in southern California, little information regarding signal stability is available. We explore the characteristics of both quartz and feldspar sub-samples from eolian, fluvial, lacustrine environments, in order to help develop mineral selection criteria for optical dating applications and clarify these issues. The importance of radiation quenching in quartz grains recently eroded from bedrock and the role of fires in enhancing OSL sensitivity are considered. The relative bleachability of quartz and feldspar fractions, along with thermal stability considerations is discussed. A simple test for quartz OSL signal contamination based on thermal quenching and assistance, and the susceptibility of the OSL signal to IR bleaching is introduced.  相似文献

In section 1, we correct an error in the proof of Lemma 3.1 in L. Alsedà, M.A. del Río, and J.A. Rodríguez. Transitivity and dense periodicity for graph maps. J. Difference Equ. Appl. 9, 577–598, 2003. In section 2 we give a simple proof that weak mixing implies mixing for maps on topological graphs. The proofs can also be extended to (not necessarily compact) intervals, so in particular, this paper shows that for one-dimensional manifolds, weak mixing implies mixing.  相似文献

We demonstrate the ability of a sensor containing a tethered fluorescein-phenol structure to react with peroxyl radicals and with an oxidizing agent such as potassium ferricyanide. This latter reaction yields the corresponding peroxyl radical as observed by EPR analysis. We propose that the reaction of the sensor with peroxyl and alkoxyl radicals is also initiated by the formation of the phenoxyl radicals, which is followed by radical-radical reactions and product hydrolysis responsible for the release of fluorescein. The proposed mechanism is based on results obtained by laser flash photolysis, HPLC and EPR studies of the reaction of peroxyl and alkoxyl radicals with 4-phenoxylphenol, a molecule used to mimic the behavior of the sensor.  相似文献

Protozoan parasites are fearsome pathogens responsible for a substantial proportion of human mortality, morbidity, and economic hardship. The principal disease agents are members of the orders Apicomplexa (Plasmodium, Toxoplasma, Eimeria) and Kinetoplastida (Trypanosomes, Leishmania). The majority of humans are at risk from infection from one or more of these organisms, with profound effects on the economy, social structure and quality of life in endemic areas; Plasmodium itself accounts for over one million deaths per annum, and an estimated 4 x 10(7) disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), whereas the Kinetoplastida are responsible for over 100,000 deaths per annum and 4 x 10(6) DALYs. Current control strategies are failing due to drug resistance and inadequate implementation of existing public health strategies. Trypanosoma brucei, the African Trypanosome, has emerged as a favored model system for the study of basic cell biology in Kinetoplastida, because of several recent technical advances (transfection, inducible expression systems, and RNA interference), and these advantages, together with genome sequencing efforts are widely anticipated to provide new strategies of therapeutic intervention. Here we describe a suite of methods that have been developed for the microscopic analysis of T. brucei at the light and ultrastructural levels, an essential component of analysis of gene function and hence identification of therapeutic targets.  相似文献

A series of Group 7 Fischer carbene complexes, [Cp(CO)2MnI=C(OEt)Ar] (Cp=cyclopentadienyl, Ar=Th=thienyl ( 1 a ), Ar=Fu=furyl ( 2 a ), Ar=Fc=ferrocenyl ( 3 a )) and biscarbene complexes, [Cp(CO)2Mn?C(OEt)?Ar′?(OEt)C?Mn(CO)2Cp] (Ar′=Th′=2,5‐thienylene ( 1 b ), Ar′=Fu′=2,5‐furylene ( 2 b ), Ar′=Fc′=1,1′‐ferrocendiyl ( 3 b )) was synthesized and characterized. Chemical oxidation of [Cp(CO)2Mn?C(OEt)Fc] ( 3 a ) and isolation of the oxidised species [3 a][PF6] possessing a MnII centre proved possible below ?30 °C in dichloromethane solution. The ESR spectrum of the transiently stable radical cation, [3 a][PF6] , confirmed the presence of a low‐spin MnII centre characterized by a rhombic g tensor (gx=1.975, gy=2.007 and gz=2.130) in frozen dichloromethane at 77 K with 55 Mn hyperfine coupling constants A1, A2 and A3 of 115, 33 and 43 G, respectively. Electrochemical studies demonstrated the influence of the Ar substituent on the oxidation potential. All complexes showed that the redox potentials of carbene double bond reduction and MnI oxidation were dependent on the type of Ar group, but only 3 b showed resolved oxidations for the two MnI centres. Surprisingly, MnI oxidation occurs at lower potentials than ferrocenyl oxidation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to delineate the nature of the species involved in the oxidation and reduction processes and clearly confirm that oxidation of MnI is favoured over that of ferrocene.  相似文献

The dual photochemistry of anthracene-9,10-endoperoxide (APO) was investigated in a fs UV pump-supercontinuum probe experiment, along with anthracene (AC) and anthraquinone (AQ) for comparison. Excitation of APO at 282 nm leads to 100% product formation by two competing photoreaction channels. Cycloreversion generates with a ~25% quantum yield (QY) (1)O(2) and AC vibrationally excited in the singlet electronic ground state (hot AC). 1-2% of the AC is generated in the lowest triplet state, but no AC is generated in electronically excited singlet states. Generation and cooling of hot AC are modeled using solution phase and broadened gas-phase AC absorption spectra at various temperatures. Results indicate ultrafast generation of hot AC within 3 ps, much faster than reported before for derivatives of anthracene endoperoxide, and subsequent cooling with an 18 ps time constant. The homolytic O-O cleavage pathway generates a biradical, which converts into electronically excited diepoxide (DE). Our data indicate a 1.5 ps time constant that we tentatively assign to the biradical decay and DE formation. Cooling of DE in this electronically excited state takes place with a ~21 ps time constant. Excitation of AQ at 266 nm is followed by an ultrafast population of the T(1)(nπ*) triplet state of AQ with a time constant of (160 ± 60) fs.  相似文献

The potential of wheat straw for ethanol production after pretreatment with O(3) generated in a plasma at atmospheric pressure and room temperature followed by fermentation was investigated. We found that cellulose and hemicellulose remained unaltered after ozonisation and a subsequent washing step, while lignin was degraded up to 95% by O(3). The loss of biomass after washing could be explained by the amount of lignin degraded. The washing water of pretreated samples (0-7 h) was analyzed for potential fermentation inhibitors. Approximately 30 lignin degradation products and a number of simple carboxylic acids and phenolic compounds were found, e.g., vanillic acid, acetic acid, and formic acid. Some components had the highest concentration at the beginning of the ozonisation process (0.5, 1 h), e.g., 4-hydroxybenzladehyde, while the concentration of others increased during the entire pretreatment (0-7 h), e.g., oxalic acid and acetovanillon. Interestingly, washing had no effect on the ethanol production with pretreatment times up to 1 h. Washing improved the glucose availability with pretreatment times of more than 2 h. One hour of ozonisation was found to be optimal for the use of washed and unwashed wheat straw for ethanol production (maximum ethanol yield, 52%). O(3) cost estimations were made for the production of ethanol at standard conditions.  相似文献

α-Galactosylceramides are glycosphingolipids that show promise in cancer immunotherapy. After presentation by CD1d, they activate natural killer T cells (NKT), which results in the production of a variety of pro-inflammatory and immunomodulatory cytokines. Herein, we report the synthesis and biological evaluation of photochromic derivatives of KRN-7000, the activity of which can be modulated with light. Based on established structure–activity relationships, we designed photoswitchable analogues of this glycolipid that control the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IFN-γ. The azobenzene derivative α-GalACer-4 proved to be more potent than KRN-7000 itself when activated with 370 nm light. Photolipids of this type could improve our mechanistic understanding of cytokine production and could open new directions in photoimmunotherapy.  相似文献
