Production decisions under joint price and production uncertainty

While production decisions in the presence of price uncertainty have been extensively studied, this is not so for the case in which the level of production is itself uncertain. In this paper,we provide a decision analysis under multiplicative production uncertainty, both with and without price uncertainty. We depict equilibrium and obtain comparative statics results with the aid of a diagram based on the difference between expected price and marginal cost. Comparative statics results are obtained for the model with production uncertainty alone and also for simultaneous price and production uncertainty (including two special cases). We first derive results based on the Arrow–Pratt coefficients of risk aversion, and then supplement these with the Ross measure of relative risk aversion, since this proves useful in the presence of multiple sources of uncertainty. We find that increases in risk (both price and production) or input prices reduce expected output. However, expected output supply is an increasing function of (expected) price only for “low” levels of risk aversion, and in general the relationship is ambiguous.     

Decidability and Specker sequences in intuitionistic mathematics

A bounded monotone sequence of reals without a limit is called a Specker sequence. In Russian constructive analysis, Church's Thesis permits the existence of a Specker sequence. In intuitionistic mathematics, Brouwer's Continuity Principle implies it is false that every bounded monotone sequence of real numbers has a limit. We claim that the existence of Specker sequences crucially depends on the properties of intuitionistic decidable sets. We propose a schema (which we call ED ) about intuitionistic decidability that asserts “there exists an intuitionistic enumerable set that is not intuitionistic decidable” and show that the existence of a Specker sequence is equivalent to ED . We show that ED is consistent with some certain well known axioms of intuitionistic analysis as Weak Continuity Principle, bar induction, and Kripke Schema. Thus, the assumption of the existence of a Specker sequence is conceivable in intuitionistic analysis. A Bounded Translation of Intuitionistic Propositional Logic into Basic Propositional Logic

In this paper we prove a bounded translation of intuitionistic propositional logic into basic propositional logic. Our new theorem, compared with the translation theorem in [1], has the advantage that it gives an effective bound on the translation, depending on the complexity of formulas.     

A Novel Application of N‐Bromosaccharin as a Chemoselective and Efficient Oxidative Reagent for Oxidation of Thiols to Disulfides under Microwave Irradiation

Chemoselective oxidation of thiols to their corresponding disulfides with N‐bromosaccharin in a very short time and with high yields in dichloromathane under microwave irradiation conditions are described.     

Efficient Trimethylsilylation of Alcohols and Phenols with HMDS in the Presence of a Catalytic Amount of 1,3‐Dibromo‐5,5‐Dimethylhydantoin (DBDMH) as a Safe and Cheap Industrial Chemical

1,3‐Dibromo‐5,5‐dimethylhydantoin (DBDMH) is found to be an effective catalyst for trimethylsilylation various alcohols and phenols with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) in dichloromethane at room temperature.     

Bioactivity-guided isolation of new antiproliferative compounds from Juniperus foetidissima Willd.

Based on a literature survey on cytotoxic medicinal plants, Juniper species were identified as interesting source of antitumor compounds. Using bioassay-guided fractionation against Caov-4 cancer cells on acetone extract of leaves and branchlets of Juniperus foetidissima led to the isolation of a new 3H-benzofuaran-2-one: 4-methyl-3-methoxy-3H-benzofuaran-2-one (1), a new sesquiterpene: 4,9(α)-dihydroxy-nardosin-6-en (2) and an already known labdane-type diterpene: 15-hydroxy-8(17),13(E)-labdadiene-19-carboxilic acid (3). Compounds 1–3 exhibited cytotoxic effects, with moderate cytotoxicity against the EJ-138 bladder and CAOV-4 ovary cancer cell lines.     

Potentiometric study of binary complexes of methyl 2-pyridyl ketone oxime, phenyl 2-pyridyl ketone oxime and diacetyl monooxime with some transition and heavy metal ions in aqueous solution

The complexation reaction between some oximes including methyl-2-pyridylketone oxime (MPKO), phenyl-2-pyridylketone oxime (PPKO) and diacetyl monooxime (DMO) with some transition and heavy metal ions Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cr3+ and La3+ has been studied potentiometrically in aqueous solution at 25+/-0.1 degrees C and ionic strength (mu) of 0.1M supported by KCl. The overall stability constants logbeta's of respective species were obtained by computer refinement of pH-volume data using BEST program. The best model among the several proposed models was selected according to the lowest sigma(fit) value. The main species in binary systems are ML, ML2, MLH, MLH2, ML2H, ML2H2, MOHL, M(OH)2L, M(OH)L2 and M(OH)2L2 (L = MPKO or PPKO or DMO).     

Synthesis of 2‐aryl‐1‐arylmethyl‐1H‐1,3‐benzimidazoles catalysed by ferric ammonium sulfate (NH4Fe(SO4)2) under solvent‐free conditions

NH₄Fe(SO₄)₂ was found to be a mild and effective catalyst for the selective synthesis of 2‐aryl‐1‐arylmethyl‐1H‐1,3‐benzimidazoles under solvent‐free conditions. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
