Intrinsic optical dichroism in the chiral superconducting state of Sr2RuO4

We present an analysis of the Hall conductivity σ(xy)(ω,T) in time reversal symmetry breaking states of exotic superconductors. We find that the dichroic signal is nonzero in systems with interband order parameters. This new intrinsic mechanism may explain the Kerr effect observed in strontium ruthenate and possibly other superconductors. We predict coherence factor effects in the temperature dependence of the imaginary part of the ac Hall conductivity Imσ(xy)(ω,T), which can be tested experimentally.     

High spin structure in127Xe and125Xe

Excited states of the nuclei¹²⁷Xe and¹²⁵Xe have been investigated in the inverse kinematic reactions⁴⁸ Ca(⁸² Se,(3.5)n) at 275 MeV beam energy with the OSIRIS multidetector system at the VICKSI-accelerator of the HMI Berlin. The level scheme of¹²⁷Xe was extended up to a level of tentative spin (51/2^?). Two excited bands of 3QP-character were observed. For¹²⁵Xe these structures were extended towards higher spins. Experimental Routhians of selected bands are presented.     

Anwendung der neutronenaktivierungsanalyse zur bestimmung von chemischen elementen in heilschlamm aus einem österreichischen moorbad

The content of various elements of mud from Neydharting Austria, that is used for Fango therapy, was determined by neutron-activation analysis. ASTRA-reactor of the Research Centre Seibersdorf and the reactor of the Institute of Nuclear Energy of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, were used. The concentrations of Ca, Cr, Sc, Fe, Zn, Rb and Co found in our laboratory were in good agreement with the results reported by the Institute of Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia. All investigated elements in mud with exception of the relatively high uranium values are in good agreement with the values obtained for the distribution of elements in different culture soils.     

Concerning the enantiomerization barrier of hypericin

Summary The Syntheses of -(R)-menthyl and ,-bis-(R)-menthyl derivatives2 and3 of hypericin were achieved, and the corresponding diastereomers could be separated. The equilibria between the respective diastereomers are slightly displaced in favor of the chromatographically faster moving ones. Kinetic measurements on these easily equilibrating diastereomers of2 and3 provided anArrhenius activation energy for the interconversion barrier between the two propeller conformers of 83 and 89 kJ/mol. It could be shown that the -menthyl residues are of minor relevance to the height of this barrier, as is also the case for thebay hydroxyl ionization and quinone tautomerization equilibria. It was thus concluded that the intrinsic barrier for the propeller conformer enantiomerization of hypericin is in the order of 80 kJ/mol. These results are in accord with those obtained from semiempirical calculations.

Zusammenfassung Nach Synthese der -(R)-Menthyl- und ,-bis-(R)-Menthylderivate2 und3 des Hypericins konnten die entsprechenden Diastereomerenpaare getrennt werden. Die Gleichgewichte sind etwas zugunsten der chromatographisch rascher wandernden Diastereomeren verschoben. Kinetische Messungen an diesen leicht äquilibrierenden Diastereomeren von2 und3 führten zu einerArrheniusschen Aktivierungsenergie für die Interkonversionsbarriere zwischen den beiden Propellerkonformeren von 83 und 89 kJ/mol. Es konnte gezeigt werden, daß die -Menthylreste für die Höhe dieser Barriere nur geringfügige Bedeutung haben, ebenso wie dasbay-Hydroxyl-Ionisierungsgleichgewicht und das Tautomeriegleichgewicht. Daraus wurde geschlossen, daß die intrinsische Barriere für die Enantiomerisierung der beiden Hypericinpropellerkonformeren in der Größenordung von 80 kJ/mol liegt. Dieses Resultat stimmt mit den Ergebnissen semiempirischer Rechnungen überein.

     

The deprotonation and protonation equilibria of a hypericin derivative in aqueous solution

Summary A hypericin derivative ,'-appended at the methyl groups with two polyethylene glycol moieties (about 23 units long) and capped with acetyl groups was synthesized starting from emodin. This derivative proved to be soluble in water and was investigated by means of spectrophotometric titrations and electrophoresis experiments. Deprotonation at thebay-region hydroxyl group was observed atpK _a=1.6. This was followed by a second deprotonation step of aperi-hydroxyl group at apK _a value of 9.4. This derivative could be protonated at the carbonyl group characterized by apK _a value of –5.7. FrompK _a determinations in water-ethanol mixtures the correspondingpK _a values of hypericin itself determined in such mixtures were extrapolated to the aqueous phase. This resulted in estimatedpK _a values of 1.8, 9.2, and –6.

Zusammenfassung Ein an den Methylgruppen von Hypericin mit endständig acetylierten Polyethylenglykolketten (ungefähr 23 Einheiten lang) ,'-disubstituiertes Derivat wurde ausgehend von Emodin synthetisiert. Dieses Derivat ist wasserlöslich, und es wurde mit Hilfe von spektrophotometrischen Titrationen und Elektrophorese untersucht. Die Deprotonierung derbay-Hydroxylgruppe erfolgt beipK _a=1.6. Diese wird von einem zweiten Deprotonierungsschritt an einerperi-Hydroxylgruppe bei einempK _a-Wert von 9.4 gefolgt. Dieses Derivat konnte an der Carbonylgruppe protoniert werden, was durch einenpK _a-Wert von –5.7 charakterisiert ist. Ausgehend vonpK _a-Messungen in Wasser-Ethanol-Mischungen wurden die entsprechendenpK _a-Werte auch für das Hypericin selbst in wäßriger Phase extrapoliert. Dies führte zu geschätztenpK _a-Werten von 1.8, 9.2 und –6.
