Acousto-optic mode coupling of partially coherent light in two-mode optical fibers

An acoustic pulse propagating on a two-mode fiber can act as a beam splitter in a scanning interferometer. When this device is employed in white-light interferometry, the effects of distributed coupling and dispersive interferometer arms need to be considered. A theory suitable for treating acousto-optic interaction of partially coherent light in a moving interaction region was developed. It was found that differential optical dispersion should be negligible and the acoustic pulse length short. Also the coherence time should be short but long compared to the intermodal group delay difference over a pulse length. Experiments with long acoustic pulses were performed, and fairly good agreement with theory was obtained.     

On uniformly Gâteaux smooth norms and normal structure

It is shown that every separable Banach space admits an equivalent norm that is uniformly Gâteaux smooth and yet lacks asymptotic normal structure.

     

Phase diagram of a two-frequency chiral nematic mixture in an electric field

The behaviour of a chiral nematic mixture with low frequency dielectric relaxtion was studied between two electrodes, with homeotropic anchoring, in the presence of an AC electric field E. The phase diagram in the parameter plane (d/p, E) was determined for this mixture which could be dielectrically negative or positive in different frequency ranges. The determination was carried out by changing the sample thickness d and both the amplitude and frequency of the electric field at a constant cholesteric pitch p.

Matrix-Investigations on Monomeric Copper(I) Chloride and its Complexes with N₂ and PN Ligands. IR Spectroscopic Results and ab-initio Calculation In solid argon the reaction of monomeric CuCl with N₂ yields ClCuN₂. On the basis of two absorptions in the ir-spectrum and their corresponding isotopic shifts (_14/15N) and with the help of a normal coordinate analysis, linearity of the molecule has been deduced. These results are confirmed by large scale ab-initio Calculations (CPF, MP2). Reaction of monomeric CuCl with molecular PN under matrix condition is shown to give rise to new absorptions in the IR spectrum which arev assigned to a linear molecule ClCuNP.     

Spectroscopic study on the complex formation of chromogenic bridged calixarenes with aliphatic amines

The complex formation between chromogenic capped calix 4 arene derivatives comprising indophenol indicator group(s), and aliphatic amines has been studied by UV/Vis spectroscopy. The equilibrium constants have been determined in ethanol, and—for one ligand—also in dimethylsulfoxide. The results have been interpreted in terms of various types of host–guest interactions and of steric effects.     

Fluorimetric determination of the levels of urinary neopterin and serum thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the nonagenarians

Twelve self-sustaining nonagenarians, 10 women and two men, aged 94+/-3 years, and eight institutionalised nonagenarians, eight women, aged 91+/-1 year as well as 11 control subjects, seven women and four men, aged 84+/-5 years entered the study. Urinary neopterin, an indicator of systemic immune activation, and serum thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), a marker of lipoperoxidation, were determined initially, and collection of the blood and urine samples was repeated at 3-month interval. Neopterin was measured in the urine specimens by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. A C(18) reversed-phase column 3.3x150 mm, 5 mum-diameter packing Separon SGX was used. Potassium phosphate buffer (15 mmol l(-1), pH 6.4) at flow rate of 0.8 ml min(-1) was used as mobile phase. After centrifugation (5 min, 1300xg) and diluting 100 mul of urine specimens with 1.0 ml of mobile phase containing 2 g of disodium-EDTA per litre, a 20 mul sample was injected on a column. Neopterin was identified by its native fluorescence (353 nm excitation, 438 nm emission). Creatinine was determined by Jaffé kinetic reaction after dilution of sample 1:50 (v/v). The concentration of neopterin in urine was expressed as neopterin/creatinine ratio (mumol mol(-1) creatinine). TBARS were determined spectrofluorometrically using LS-5 spectrofluorimeter (excitation wavelength 528 nm, emission wavelength 558 nm) after extraction with n-butanol treatment with thiobarbituric acid. The significance of differences between nonagenarians and control group was examined by ANOVA-Kruskal-Wallis tests, using statistical software NCSS 6.0.21 (Kaysville, UT, 1996). The decision on significance was based on P=0.05. Urinary neopterin was significantly higher in institutionalised compared to self-sustaining subjects and controls (625+/-565 vs. 203+/-63 mumol mol(-1) creatinine, and 198+/-128 mumol mol(-1) creatinine, respectively, P=0.006). The serum TBARS were higher in both groups of nonagenarians (3.23+/-1.16 mumol l(-1) and 2.69+/-0.39 vs. 2.12+/-0.83 mumol l(-1) for the self-sustaining, institutionalised and controls, respectively, P=0.023). We conclude that the fluorimetric determinations of urinary neopterin and serum TBARS can be useful for the monitoring health status in the elderly patients.     

Fracture strength of class II slot cavities restored with polymerizable restorative materials

This study compared the fracture strength of Class II slot cavities restored with polymerizable restorative materials. Sixty, caries-free, posterior teeth were divided into five groups of 12 teeth. The Class II slot cavities were prepared. The teeth were restored with two packable composites (Filtek P60, Surefil), a microhybrid composite (Filtek Z250)and two ormocer (Definite, Admira). The restorations were then subjected to fracture resistance tests. The marginal ridges of the restorations were loaded at an angle of 13.5° to the long axis of the tooth in an Universal Testing Machine until failure. Analysis of mean forces indicated that, Filtek P60, Surefil and Filtek Z250 exhibited better performance than Definite and Admira. The tested resin composites differed in their mechanical properties. This study suggested that fracture behavior were highly influenced by the filler system. Overall, Filtek P60, Surefil, Filtek Z250, demonstrated good fracture resistance. Connecting Mathematics and Science in Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs: Faculty Voices from the Maryland Collaborative for Teacher Preparation

The study reported in this paper investigated perceptions concerning connections between mathematics and science held by university/college instructors who participated in the Maryland Collaborative for Teacher Preparation (MCTP), an NSF-funded program aimed at developing special middle-level mathematics and science teachers. Specifically, we asked (a) “What are the perceptions of MCTP instructors about the ‘other’ discipline?” (b) “What are the perceptions of MCTP instructors about the connections between mathematics and science?” and (c) “What are some barriers perceived by MCTP instructors in implementing mathematics and science courses that emphasize connections?” The findings suggest that the benefits of emphasizing mathematics and science connections perceived by MCTP instructors were similar to the benefits reported by school teachers. The barriers reported were also similar. The participation in the project appeared to have encouraged MCTP instructors to grapple with some fundamental questions, like “What should be the nature of mathematics and science connections?” and “What is the nature of mathematics/science in relationship to the other discipline?”
