Weakly turbulent instability of anti-de Sitter spacetime

We study the nonlinear evolution of a weakly perturbed anti-de?Sitter (AdS) space by solving numerically the four-dimensional spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant. Our results suggest that AdS space is unstable under arbitrarily small generic perturbations. We conjecture that this instability is triggered by a resonant mode mixing which gives rise to diffusion of energy from low to high frequencies.     

Effect of oxygen surface groups on adsorption of benzene derivatives from aqueous solutions onto active carbon samples

The process of adsorption of selected benzene derivatives from aqueous solution is investigated on two carbonaceous materials of differentiated surface properties - quantity of oxygen functional groups. Carbon samples were prepared by removal of external layers from granules of unmodified and oxidized active carbon. The surface and structure characteristics of carbon samples were estimated by various methods. The experimental isotherms of organics adsorption from liquid phase were measured and interpreted in terms of the theory of adsorption on heterogeneous solid surfaces. The influence of differences in adsorbate and adsorbent properties on adsorption uptake was analyzed. The adsorption effectiveness was regarded as a result of the differences in adsorbate hydrophobicities and the effect of specific interactions of its functional groups with active sites on carbon surface.     

Simple SPE–GC method for anethole determination in human serum

Recently, much attention has been given to congener analysis, which can be used to check the possibility of postoffence drinking claims in forensic toxicology. In this type of analysis, the information given by the defendant regarding the type, quantity, and time of consumption of a specific alcoholic beverage is used to calculate theoretically expected congener concentration in the blood and this is compared with the analytically determined concentrations in the blood sample. Many alcoholic drinks aromatized with essential oils of plants and fruits contain a specific congener, for example, anethole in aniseed drinks. The present study describes the GC procedure of anethole analysis in human plasma using SPE as the sample preparation method. The procedure involves the protein precipitation process, which generally degrades the protein–analyte complex, and SPE isolation of anethole from the examined materials. This analytical approach is proposed as a method of choice for the estimation of anethole concentration in human fluids after the consumption of alcoholic beverages and other foods containing the substance. The described method is characterized by a low LOD (8.33 ng/g) and a very high recovery (average recovery 98.37%) of the analyte.     

Application of Alkali Metal Hydroxides for the Preparation of gem‐Chlorophenylcyclopropanes

gem‐Chlorophenylcyclopropanes 3 are conveniently prepared by reaction of benzal chloride (1) with alkenes 2, carried out either in the presence of solid potassium hydroxide and 18‐crown‐6 as a catalyst or cesium hydroxide monohydrate, without solvent.     

On a generalization of the Dvoretzky–Wald–Wolfowitz theorem with an application to a robust optimization problem

A generalization of the Dvoretzky–Wald–Wolfowitz theorem to the case of conditional expectations is provided assuming that the σ-field on the state space has no conditional atoms. Neither continuity nor compactness assumptions are made on the model. An application to a robust (maxmin) optimization problem is given.     

Changes in surface composition of Fe-Si-Cr-K oxide alkylation catalyst: the marked role of potassium ferrites

The influence of gas-phase methylation of phenol on the state of the Fe-Si-Cr-K oxide catalyst surface was investigated by thermodesorption of K atoms and ions. Changes in potassium desorption energies, as determined from Arrhenius-like plots, varied from 3.07 eV to 1.21 eV for the atoms and from 2.59 eV to 2.89 eV for ion desorption from the active and deactivated samples, respectively. The results were discussed in terms of transformation of the catalyst surface and formation of β-ferrite.     

Acetals and ethers-xiii Reaction products of 2-butenal with ethylene glycol

The unsaturated cyclic acetal, 2-(1-propenyl)-1,3-dioxolane (2), has been found as an intermediate product in the p-toluenesulfonic acid catalysed reaction of 2-butenal with an excess of ethylene glycol. The final product consisted of 2-[2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-propyl]-1,3-dioxolane (3), and a small amount of geometric isomers of cis- and trans-5-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-7-methyl-1,4-dioxepane (4a and 4b, respectively).
