Viscous dissipation effect on heat transfer characteristics of rectangular microchannels under slip flow regime and H1 boundary conditions

Viscous dissipation effect on heat transfer characteristics of a rectangular microchannel is studied. Flow is governed by the Navier–Stokes equations with the slip flow and temperature jump boundary conditions. Integral transform technique is applied to derive the temperature distribution and Nusselt number. The velocity distribution is taken from literature. The solution method is verified for the case where viscous dissipation is neglected. It is found that, the viscous dissipation is negligible for gas flows in microchannels, since the contribution of this effect on Nu number is about 1%. However, this effect should be taken into account for much more viscous flows, such as liquid flows. Neglecting this effect for a flat microchannel with an aspect ratio of 0.1 for Br=0.04 underestimates the Nu number about 5%.     

Inclusion Complex Formation Between Modified Cyclodextrins and Riboflvin and Alloxazine in Aqueous Solution

Inclusion complex formation of hydroxypropylated α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrins with riboflavin (vitamin B₂) and alloxazine was studied by spectroscopic and solubility methods. Alloxazine, which is a structural analog of riboflavin, was considered in order to evaluate the role of ribityl and methyl substituents in complexation. Thermodynamic parameters for 1:1 complex formation were obtained and analyzed in terms of influence of the reagent structure on the binding process. It was shown that the cavity of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin is more appropriate for formation of stable complexes. The complexes are enthalpy stabilized, due to prevalence of van der Waals interactions and possible hydrogen bonding. The partial insertion of riboflavin into the cyclodextrin cavity was revealed by ¹H NMR and computer modeling. The ribityl side chain, which prevents deep inclusion, is located nearby the wider rim of the cyclodextrin molecule and can undergo destruction. Penetration of the alloxazine molecule into the macrocyclic cavity is deeper and accompanied by formation of more stable inclusion complexes. Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin was found to be the more efficient solubilizing agent for riboflavin and alloxazine, whereas a stabilization action of cyclodextrins towards riboflavin was not observed.     

Effect of residual copper on stability of molecular brushes prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization

Effect of residual copper on stability of molecular brushes with poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA) side chains was studied. The brushes were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using the grafting-from approach. Although the copper concentration was decreased down to below ten ppm levels by passing through alumina column, further removal was required to prevent crosslinking reactions. Further removal was performed by dialysis or precipitation.

Thiazolo[3,2-d] tetrazolium salts were obtained by treatment of 5-mercapto-1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrazole with α-bromo ketones followed by cyclodehydration. The spectral properties of the salts and the β-keto sulfide precursors were investigated.

Alkylation, reduction, and ring opening of diphenylcyclopropenethione to a π-allyl complex occurs on treatment with Mn(CO)₅^? and methyl iodide in aqueous methanol.

Esters are isolated in fine yields from the rhodium(I) catalyzed reaction of benzyl chlorides with borate esters and carbon monoxide, in the presence of potassium iodide.     

A simple synthesis of thioketonemolybdenum carbonyl complexes. An example of geometric isomerism

Thioketones react with molybdenum hexacarbonyl in tetrahydrofuran (60–65°C, 2–3 h) to give molybdenum pentacarbonyl complexes in 52–80% yield. Geometric isomers were isolated in the case of thiocamphor.
