Flexible cellulose derivative PDLC type cells

In this work we perform a study of 250 ≈ μm thick flexible electro-optical PDLC type cells made from a biocompatible cellulose derivative film and several conductive substrates. The deposition of an ITO layer by reactive thermal evaporation on a polymeric substrate was referred to in the literature very recently and this type of coated substrate was used in the present work. In order to consider the influence of the substrates on the electro-optical behaviour of the cells, five cells were made using different substrates (three flexible polymers and two glass for comparison). Three of the substrates were coated under the same conditions, and the other two were commercially available substrates.     

Nanostructure and dielectric properties of a twist-bend nematic liquid crystal mixture

We present freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy (FF-TEM), dielectric spectroscopy and electro-optic measurements on a dimeric liquid crystal mixture, which previously was proposed to form the twist-bend nematic (N_tb) phase. Our FF-TEM studies provide a direct image of a 10.5 nm periodic structure, consistent with the expected nanoscale, heliconical twist-bend modulation of the molecular orientation. Dielectric measurements in the 100 Hz to 10 MHz range reveal three nearly Debye-type dispersion processes in the nematic and the twist-bend phase. Low frequency 8 V/µm electric fields applied on planar cells cause the optical-scale stripe texture (another characteristic feature of the N_tb phase) to disappear. Higher (>16 V/µm) fields gradually realign the heliconical axis along the electric field; it relaxes back after the field removal.     

Tensor gauge field localization on a string-like defect

This work is devoted to the study of tensor gauge fields on a string-like defect in six dimensions. This model is very successful in localizing fields of various spins only by gravitational interaction. Due to problems of field localization in membrane models we are motivated to investigate if a string-like defect localizes the Kalb–Ramond field. In contrast to what happens in Randall–Sundrum and thick brane scenarios we find a localized zero mode without the addition of other fields in the bulk. Considering the local string defect we obtain analytical solutions for the massive modes. Also, we take the equations of motion in a supersymmetric quantum mechanics scenario in order to analyze the massive modes. The influence of the mass as well as the angular quantum number in the solutions is described. An additional analysis on the massive modes is performed by the Kaluza–Klein decomposition, which provides new details about the KK masses.     

Gaps in the number of generators of monomial Togliatti systems

Let $I_{d,n}?k[x_0,?,x_n]$ be a minimal monomial Togliatti system of forms of degree d. In [4], Mezzetti and Miró-Roig proved that the minimal number of generators $\mu (I_{d,n})$ of $I_{d,n}$ lies in the interval $[2n+1,\left(\begin{array}{c}n+d?1\\ n?1\end{array}\right)]$. In this paper, we prove that for $n\ge 4$ and $d\ge 3$, the integer values in $[2n+3,3n?1]$ cannot be realized as the number of minimal generators of a minimal monomial Togliatti system. We classify minimal monomial Togliatti systems $I_{d,n}?k[x_0,?,x_n]$ of forms of degree d with $\mu (I_{d,n})=2n+2$ or 3n (i.e. with the minimal number of generators reaching the border of the non-existence interval). Finally, we prove that for $n=4$, $d\ge 3$ and $\mu \in [9,\left(\begin{array}{c}d+3\\ 3\end{array}\right)]?\{11\}$ there exists a minimal monomial Togliatti system $I_{d,n}?k[x_0,?,x_n]$ of forms of degree d with $\mu (I_{n,d})=\mu$.     

CoII Cryptates Convert CO2 into CO and CH4 under Visible Light

Three Co^II octaazacryptates, with different substituents on the aromatic rings (Br, NO₂, CCH), were synthesised and characterised. These and the already published non-substituted cryptate catalysed CO₂ photoreduction to CO and CH₄ under blue visible light at room temperature. Although CO was observed after short irradiation times and a large range of catalyst concentrations, CH₄ was only observed after longer irradiation periods, such as 30 h, but with a small catalyst concentration (25 nm ). Experiments with ¹³C labelled CO₂ showed that CO is formed and reacts further when the reaction time is long. The CCH catalyst is deactivated faster than the others and the more efficient catalyst for CH₄ production is the one with Br. This reactivity trend was explained by an energy decomposition analysis based on DFT calculations.
