Luminescence of porous silicon derived nanocrystals dispersed in water: dependence on initial porous silicon oxidation

Aqueous solutions of silicon nanocrystals have been obtained, by sonication, from porous Si (p-Si) aged in air for various times. The photoluminescence of these solutions changes with the aging time of p-Si. These changes correlate with nanocrystal core dimensions, i.e. with the oxidation of the nanocrystals. Infrared spectra show that the reaction with water depends on the age of the starting p-Si sample, since the native superficial oxide layer on p-Si inhibits these reactions.     

Studies on pyrrolidinones. Catalyst induced selectivity during heterocyclizations of organosilicon compounds into 1,3,4-oxadiazoles or 1,2,4-triazines

Heterocyclizations of trisilylated diacylhydrazines derived from pyroglutamic acid occurs selectively and yields, depending on the conditions, either to 1,3,4-oxadiazoles (basic catalyst: fluoride anion) or to fused 1,2,4-triazines (acidic catalyst: triflic acid).     

Studies on pyrrolidinones. Synthesis of 2-(5-oxo-2-pyrrolidinyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoles and 2-(5-oxo-2-pyrrolidinyl)benzimidazoles

The condensation of pyroglutamic acids with 1,2-phenylenediamine leads to 2-(5-oxo-2-pyrrolidinyl)benzimidazoles and the cyclization of disilylated diacylhydrazines derived from the same acids gives 2-(5-oxo-2-pyrrolidinyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoles. These compounds show weak antifungal activity.     

Atomic intersection of σ-fields and some of its consequences

Let ${(\Omega, \mathcal{F}, P)}$ be a probability space. For each ${\mathcal{G}\subset\mathcal{F}}$ , define ${\overline{\mathcal{G}}}$ as the σ-field generated by ${\mathcal{G}}$ and those sets ${F\in \mathcal{F}}$ satisfying ${P(F)\in\{0,1\}}$ . Conditions for P to be atomic on ${\cap_{i=1}^k\overline{\mathcal{A}_i}}$ , with ${\mathcal{A }_1,\ldots,\mathcal{A}_k\subset\mathcal{F}}$ sub-σ-fields, are given. Conditions for P to be 0-1-valued on ${\cap_{i=1}^k \overline{\mathcal{A}_i}}$ are given as well. These conditions are useful in various fields, including Gibbs sampling, iterated conditional expectations and the intersection property.     

Multidimensional extension of the Morse–Hedlund theorem

A celebrated result of Morse and Hedlund, stated in 1938, asserts that a sequence x$x$ over a finite alphabet is ultimately periodic if and only if, for some n$n$, the number of different factors of length n$n$ appearing in x$x$ is less than n+1$n+1$. Attempts to extend this fundamental result, for example, to higher dimensions, have been considered during the last fifteen years. Let d≥2$d\ge 2$. A legitimate extension to a multidimensional setting of the notion of periodicity is to consider sets of Z^d${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ definable by a first order formula in the Presburger arithmetic 〈Z;<,+〉$〈\mathbb{Z};<,+〉$. With this latter notion and using a powerful criterion due to Muchnik, we exhibit a complete extension of the Morse–Hedlund theorem to an arbitrary dimension d$d$ and characterize sets of Z^d${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ definable in 〈Z;<,+〉$〈\mathbb{Z};<,+〉$ in terms of some functions counting recurrent blocks, that is, blocks occurring infinitely often.     

Diffusion of Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein in Living OLN-93 Cells Investigated by Raster-Scanning Image Correlation Spectroscopy (RICS)

Many membrane proteins and lipids are partially confined in substructures ranging from tens of nanometers to micrometers in size. Evidence for heterogeneities in the membrane of oligodendrocytes, i.e. the myelin-producing cells of the central nervous system, is almost exclusively based on detergent methods. However, as application of detergents can alter the membrane phase behaviour, it is important to investigate membrane heterogeneities in living cells. Here, we report on the first investigations of the diffusion behavior of the myelin-specific protein MOG (myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein) in OLN-93 as studied by the recently developed RICS (raster-scanning image correlation spectroscopy) technique. We implemented RICS on a standard confocal laser-scanning microscope with one-photon excitation and analog detection. Measurements on FITC-dextran were used to evaluate the performance of the system and the data analysis procedure. Ellen Gielen and Nick Smisdom contributed equally to this work.     

Main features of electronic momentum distribution in sodium clusters

We have analyzed the electronic momentum distribution n(k) of sodium clusters using the Kohn-Sham formalism within the Local Density Approximation for the valence electrons. Simple approximations to the Wigner transform have been used to understand the deviation between n(k) in clusters and in the bulk system. Deformation effects have been also analyzed.
