To improve the flame-retardant efficiency and water resistance of ammonium polyphosphate(APP), the UV-curable pentaerythritol triacrylate(PETA) was used to microencapsulate APP via the UV curing polymerization method. The prepared PETA-microencapsulated APP(PETA-APP) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and thermogravimetric(TG) analysis. PETA-APP was used as intumescent flame retardant(IFR) alone to flame retard polypropylene(PP). The water resistance of PP/PETA-APP composites was investigated, and the effect of PETA on the combustion behaviors of PP/APP composites was studied through limiting oxygen index(LOI), vertical burning test(UL-94) and cone calorimeter(CC) test, respectively. With 40 wt% of PETA-APP, the PP/PETA-APP system could achieve a LOI value of 30.0% and UL-94 V-0 rating after treatment in hot water for 168 h, while the LOI value of the system containing 40 wt% uncoated APP was only 19.2%, and it failed to pass the UL-94 rating. CC test results showed that the heat release rate(HRR), mass loss rate(MLR) and smoke production rate(SPR) of PP/PETAAPP system decreased significantly compared with PP/APP system, especially the peak of HRR was decreased by 51.4%. The mechanism for the improvement of flame reatardancy for PP/PETA-APP composites was discussed based on FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) tests. All these results illustrated that simultaneous improvement of flame retardancy and water resistance for PP/APP was achieved through coating UV-curable PETA onto APP.  相似文献

The effects of aluminum hypophosphite(AHP) as a synergistic agent on the flame retardancy and thermal degradation behavior of intumescent flame retardant polypropylene composites(PP/IFR) containing ammonium polyphosphate(APP) and triazine charring-foaming agent(CFA) were investigated by limiting oxygen index(LOI), UL-94 measurement, thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), cone calorimeter test(CONE), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). It was found that the combination of IFR with AHP exhibited an evident synergistic effect and enhanced the flame retardant efficiency for PP matrix. The specimens with the thickness of 0.8 mm can pass UL-94 V-0 rating and the LOI value reaches 33.5% based on the total loading of flame retardant of 24 wt%, and the optimum mass fraction of AHP/IFR is 1:6. The TGA data revealed that AHP could change the degradation behavior of IFR and PP/IFR system, enhance the thermal stability of the IFR and PP/IFR systems at high temperatures and promote the char residue formation. The CONE results revealed that IFR/AHP blends can efficiently reduce the combustion parameters of PP, such as heat release rate(HRR), total heat release(THR), smoke production rate(SPR) and so on. The morphological structures of char residue demonstrated that AHP is of benefit to the formation of a more compact and homogeneous char layer on the materials surface during burning. The analysis of XPS indicates that AHP may promote the formation of sufficient char on the materials surface and improve the flame retardant properties.  相似文献

A phosphorus-containing flame retardant, 4-(5,5-dimethyl-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinan-2-yloxymethyl)-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phospha-bicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1-oxide (MOPO), was synthesized successfully and characterized. The flame retardancy and thermal behavior of a new intumescent flame-retardant (IFR) system for EVA, which was made of MOPO and ammonium polyphosphate (APP), were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical burning test (UL-94), cone calorimeter, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). An LOI value of 28.4 and UL-94 V-0 rating can be achieved when the total loading of MOPO and APP was 30 wt.%. The results from cone calorimeter indicate that both the heat release rate (HRR) and the total heat release (THR) of IFR-EVA decreased significantly compared with those of neat EVA. TG curves showed that the amount of residues increased significantly when intumescent additives were added; it also could be found that the LOI values increased with the increase in char residues. Meanwhile, morphology of the residues obtained from burning IFR-EVA in LOI test was studied through the SEM observations and rich compact char layers could explain the excellent flame retardance.  相似文献

The synergistic effect of four different boron containing substances, zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO4), boron silicon containing preceramic oligomer (BSi) and lanthanum borate (LaB), were studied to improve the flame retardancy of a polypropylene (PP) intumescent system composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER). The flame retardancy of PP composites was investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter tests. The addition of 20 wt% intumescent flame retardant (IFR) improves the flame retardancy by increasing the char formation. According to LOI and UL-94 test, boron compounds show their highest synergistic effect at 1 wt% loading. BPO4 containing composite shows the highest LOI (30), lowest maximum heat release rate (HRR) and lowest total heat release rate (THR) value. Although the char yield increases as the amount of boron compounds increases, the flame retarding effect decreases. Cone calorimeter and TGA data indicate that the boron compounds are likely to show their synergistic effect by reinforcing the integrity of char which improves its barrier effect rather than increasing the char yield.  相似文献

Novel intumescent flame-retardant poly(lactic acid) (PLA/IFR)/organo-modified α-zirconium phosphate(OZrP) nanocomposites were prepared via incorporation of charring agent (CA), ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and OZrP into PLA. OZrP was synthesized directly by a solvent thermal method. The morphological characterization of PLA/IFR/OZrP nanocomposites was conducted by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of the OZrP on flame retardancy and the thermal stability of PLA/IFR composites were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94) and cone calorimeter test. The TGA data illustrated that the OZrP could increase the residue and significantly improve the flame retardancy of PLA/IFR/OZrP nanocomposites showing an excellent synergistic effect. The addition of OZrP to the flame-retardant PLA increases the LOI and enhances the UL-94 rating. Cone calorimeter tests gave clear evidence that the incorporation of OZrP into PLA/IFR composites resulted in the significant reduction of the heat release rate (HRR), low total heat release (THR) and high amount of char residues during combustion. The flame-retardant mechanism of PLA/IFR/OZrP nanocomposites may correspond to the intumescent flame-retardant mechanism and catalyzed carbonization mechanism caused by OZrP.  相似文献

The flame retardancy of a novel intumescent flame‐retardant polypropylene (IFR‐PP) system, which was composed of a charring agent (CA), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and polypropylene (PP), could be enhanced significantly by adding a small amount (1.0 wt%) of an organic montmorillonite (O‐MMT). The synergistic flame‐retardant effect was studied systematically. The thermal stability and combustion behavior of the flame‐retarded PP were also investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and cone calorimeter test (CCT). TGA results demonstrated that the onset decomposition temperatures of IFR‐PP samples, with or without O‐MMT, were higher than that of neat PP. Compared with IFR‐PP, the LOI value of IFR‐PP containing 1.0 wt% O‐MMT was increased from 30.8 to 33.0, and the UL‐94 rating was also enhanced to V‐0 from V‐1 when the total loading of flame retardant was the same. The cone calorimeter results showed that the IFR‐PP with 1.0 wt% of O‐MMT had the lowest heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), total smoke production (TSP), CO production (COP), CO2 production (CO2P), and mass loss (ML) of all the studied IFR‐PP samples, with or without O‐MMT. All these results indicated that O‐MMT had a significantly synergistic effect on the flame‐retardancy of IFR‐PP at a low content of O‐MMT. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Variable amounts of zinc and nickel salts, such as ZnSO4·7H2O and NiSO4·6H2O, have been incorporated into blends of polypropylene (PP)/ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/dipentaerythritol (DPER) with the aim of studying their effect on intumescent flame retardance (IFR). The PP/IFR/salt composites have been prepared using a twin-screw extruder, and their IFR behaviours have been evaluated through limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning tests (UL-94), and cone calorimeter tests (CONE). The results show that, at an appropriate level, zinc and nickel salts can increase the LOI and decrease the heat release rate (HRR). The composites have been studied with the aid of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The flame-retardant mechanism of the PP/IFR/salts system is also discussed in terms of catalytic charring. ZnSO4·7H2O has been shown to be the most effective among the aforementioned metal salts, which has proved to be strongly associated with its low melting point and the interaction between DPER and SO42−.  相似文献

In order to explore the structure mode of intumescent flame retardants (IFRs) with higher efficiency, IFR particles with joint‐aggregation structure (@IFR) were obtained through the treatment of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and a charring agent (PT‐Cluster) in their aqueous solution. Then, the joint‐aggregation IFR effect was researched using its application in polypropylene. In case of 20 wt% IFR loading, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of @IFR/PP was 1.1% higher than that of 15APP/5PT‐Cluster/PP mixture, and a 1.6 mm‐thick @IFR/PP composite passed the UL 94 V‐2 rating test, while 15APP/5PT‐Cluster/PP demonstrated no flame‐retardant rating in UL 94 vertical burning tests. In a cone calorimeter test, @IFR also had a better inhibition effect on heat release. The average heat release rate (av‐HRR) value during 0 to 120 seconds of @IFR/PP was only 41 kW m?2, which was 33.9% lower than that of the 15APP/5PT‐Cluster/PP. Furthermore, the peak heat release rate (pk‐HRR) of @IFR/PP was 20.5% lower than that of 15APP/5PT‐Cluster/PP, and the time to pk‐HRR of @IFR/PP was 710 seconds, while that of 15APP/5PT‐Cluster/PP was 580 seconds. The better inhibition effect on HRR and the delay of time to pk‐HRR were caused by the joint‐aggregated structure of @IFR, which can rapidly react to form stable and efficient char layers. This kind of join‐aggregation IFR effect has great significance in suppressing the spread of fire in reality. In addition, @IFR also increased the mechanical properties of PP composites slightly compared with the APP/PT‐Cluster mixture.  相似文献

The effects of lanthanum oxide (La2O3) as a synergistic agent on the flame retardancy of intumescent flame retardant polypropylene composites (IFR-PP) were studied, and the new IFR system mainly consisted of the charring-foaming agent (CFA) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP). The limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), cone calorimeter (CONE) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to evaluate the synergistic effects of La2O3. It was found that when IFR was fixed at 20 wt% in IFR-PP composites, only a little amount of La2O3 could enhance LOI value and pass the UL-94 V0 rating test (1.6 mm). The TGA data showed that La2O3 could enhance the thermal stability of the IFR-PP systems at high temperature and effectively increase the char residue formation. The CONE results revealed that La2O3 and IFR could clearly change the decomposition behavior of PP and form a char layer on the surface of the composites, consequently resulting in efficient reduction of the flammability parameters, such as heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), smoke production rate (SPR), total smoke production (TSP), ignition time (IT) and so on. The morphological structures observed by SEM demonstrated that La2O3 could promote to form the homogenous and compact intumescent char layer. Thus, a suitable amount of La2O3 plays a synergistic effect in the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of IFR composites.  相似文献

A laboratory-made poly-N,N′-ethyleneterephthalamide (PETA) was used as a novel charring agent and it was combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to prepare the intumescent flame retardant (IFR). For improving the flame retardant efficiency of IFR on acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene copolymer (ABS), several adjuvant (Adj), such as zeolite 4A (4A), aluminum phosphinate (AlPi), organic montmorillonite, and 2,2′-bis(2-oxazoline), was added, and the synergistic effect was investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI), the UL-94 (vertical flame) test, the thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the LOI values of ABS/IFR/Adj (70/30/2) system exceeded 30, and they passed the V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. The TG data demonstrated that the thermal stability and the mass residue of ABS/IFR/Adj were effectively enhanced. Besides, the SEM indicated that adjuvant promoted the formation of the compact, uniform, dense, and intumescent charred layer after burning. After that, the synergistic effect of AlPi and 4A on APP/PETA was investigated by Thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.  相似文献

A novel ionic liquid containing phosphorus ([PCMIM]Cl) was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and 31P NMR. Moreover, a new intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system, which was composed of [PCMIM]Cl and ammonium polyphosphate (APP), was used to impart flame retardancy and dripping resistance to polypropylene (PP). The flammability and thermal behaviors of intumescent flame‐retarded PP (PP/IFR) composites were evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter test. It was found that there was an obvious synergistic effect between [PCMIM]Cl and APP. When the weight ratio of [PCMIM]Cl and APP was 1:5 and the total amount of IFR was kept at 30 wt%, LOI value of PP/IFR composite reached 31.8, and V‐0 rating was obtained. Moreover, both the peak heat release rate and the peak mass loss rate of PP/IFR composites decreased significantly relative to PP and PP/APP composite from cone calorimeter analysis. The TGA curves suggested that [PCMIM]Cl had good ability of char formation, and when combined with APP, it could greatly promote the char formation of PP/IFR composites, hence improved the flame retardancy. Additionally, the rheological behaviors and mechanical properties of PP/IFR composites were also investigated, and it was found that [PCMIM]Cl could also serve as an efficient lubricant and compatibilizer between APP and PP, endowing the materials with satisfying processability and mechanical properties. Low flame retardant efficiency is a key bottleneck for currently available retardants against the flammable polypropylene (PP). Herein, the organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) was utilized as a synergist for our previously reported intumescent flame retardant (IFR) that was constructed from ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and hyperbranched charring foaming agent (HCFA) to further enhance the retardant efficiency against PP. The resultant's combustion behavior was thoroughly investigated by cone calorimetry, limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that 20% addition of IFR with OMMT showed a positive effect and improved the flame retardancy of the PP systems. Especially, addition of 2 wt% OMMT obviously increased the LOI values of PP systems with 20% total loading flame retardants from 29% to 31.5% and the samples meet V‐0 rating as well as the reduction of the heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), CO2, and CO production occurred. On the other hand, the SEM images were also revealed that OMMT initiated a dense and strong char on the surface of the material, which resulted in efficient flame retardancy of PP matrix during combustion. In addition, thermal degradation behavior discussed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that OMMT could improve the thermal stability of PP systems under high temperature, and promoted char residues of PP/IFR systems. In this article, the laboratory-made poly (p-ethylene terephthalamide) (PETA) was used as a novel charring agent and it combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to prepare the intumescent flame retardant (IFR). For improving the flame-retardant efficiency of IFRs on polypropylene (PP), several general synergistic agents, such as common zinc oxide (Com-ZnO), nanometer structural zinc oxide (Nano-ZnO), zeolite 4A, and aluminum hypophosphite(Al(H2PO2)3), were added in composites of PP/IFR, and the synergistic effect was investigated by the limited oxygen index (LOI), the UL-94 (vertical flame) test, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), thermogravimetry-fourier transform infraredspectroscopy (TG-IR) test, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It indicated that the flame retardancy was significantly enhanced in terms of prompting the char formation of PETA and interaction between APP and synergistic agents. Overall, Al(H2PO2)3 was the most effective synergistic agent among them. TG-IR analysis showed that the addition of Al(H2PO2)3 could delay the release of NH3, and make the release of NH3 more smooth, which was useful to form a dense char. SEM presented that compact, continuous and good intumescent charring layers were observed in all PP/IFR systems with synergistic agent.  相似文献

In order to solve the “candlewick effect” caused by glass fibers, which results in the decrease of flame retardancy of flame-retardant long-glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (LGFPP) systems, and the deterioration of mechanical properties caused by adding an additional amount of flame retardants compared with flame-retardant non-glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene systems so as to keep a same flame retardancy, a novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system, which is composed of a charring agent (CA), ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and organically-modified montmorillonite (OMMT), was used to flame retard LGFPP. The thermal stability, combustion behavior, char formation, flame retardant mechanism and mechanical properties of the IFR-LGFPP samples were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, cone calorimeter test, scanning electronic microscopy, and mechanical property tests. When the content of IFR is 20 wt%, the LOI value of IFR-LGFPP reaches 31.3, and the vertical burning test reaches UL-94 V-0 rating, solving the “candlewick effect” caused by long glass fiber without additional amount of the IFR. All the relevant cone calorimeter parameters also show that IFR-LGFPP has much better flame-retardant behaviors than LGFPP. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of IFR-LGFPP almost remain unchanged in comparison with those of LGFPP containing no IFR. The flame retardant mechanism was also discussed.  相似文献

The two kinds of transition metal ion-incorporated nickel phosphates (TMIVSB-1) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The flame retardancy and thermal behavior of intumescent flame retardants (IFR), with and without TMIVSB-1 for PP, were investigated by LOI, UL-94 test, thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and cone calorimetry. TMIVSB-1 can obviously improve the flame retardant behavior of IFR systems according to the results of LOI values and UL-94 test. The results of LOI show that 2 wt% TMIVSB-1 can increase the LOI value by 3–5 unit compared with that of PP/IFR composite. The UL-94 test shows that PP with 20% IFR burns and has no rating, but the addition of a small content 2 wt% of TMIVSB-1 with 18 wt% of IFR can reach a UL-94 V-0 rating. TGA results show that the thermal stability of PP/IFR/TMIVSB-1 increases obviously more than that of PP/IFR when the temperature is above 265°C. From cone calorimetry results, it can be observed that the HRR peaks are not obviously decreased, but the burning time of PP/IFR/FeVSB-1 (351s) and PP/IFR/ZnVSB-1 (380s) is obviously prolonged compared with that of PP/IFR (303s). The real time FTIR spectra (RTFTIR) demonstrates that the addition of TMIVSB-1 further staves the decomposition of the PP composites. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicates the quality of char forming of PP/IFR/ TMIVSB-1 is superior to that of PP/IFR.  相似文献

The charring agent (CNCA‐DA) containing triazine and benzene rings was combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to form intumescent flame retardant (IFR), and it was occupied to modify polylactide (PLA). The flame retardant properties and mechanism of flame retardant PLA composites were investigated by the limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), thermogravimetric analysis, microscale combustion calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy analysis and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The analysis from LOI and UL‐94 presented that the IFR was very effective in flame retardancy of PLA. When the weight ratio of APP to CNCA‐DA was 3:1, and the IFR loading was 30%, the IFR showed the best effect, and the LOI value reached 45.6%. It was found that when 20 wt% IFR was loaded, the flame retardancy of PLA/IFR still passed UL‐94 V‐0 rating, and its LOI value reached 32.8%. The microscale combustion calorimetry results showed that PLA/IFR had lower heat release rate, total heat release, and heat release capacity than other composites, and there was an obvious synergistic effect between APP and CNCA‐DA for PLA. IFR containing APP/CNCA‐DA had good thermal stability and char‐forming ability with the char residue 29.3% at 800°C under N2 atmosphere. Scanning electron microscopy observation further indicated that IFR could promote forming continuous and compact intumescent char layer. The laser Raman spectroscopy analysis and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results indicated that an appropriate graphitization degree of the residue char was formed, and more O and N were remained to form more cross‐linking structure. The functions of nanoclay and three different boron containing substances, zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO4), and boron silicon containing preceramic oligomer (BSi), were studied to improve the flame retardancy of polypropylene (PP)‐nanoclay‐intumescent system composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER). The flame retardancy of PP composites was investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and cone calorimeter. According to the results obtained, the addition of 20 wt% intumescent flame retardant (IFR) improved the flame retardancy by increasing the char formation. Addition of clay slightly increases the LOI value and reduces the maximum heat release rate (HRR). Addition of clay also increases the barrier effect due to intumescent char, especially in thin samples. Boron compounds show their highest synergistic effect at about 3 wt% loading. According to UL‐94 test and LOI test, 3 wt% ZnB containing composite shows the highest rating (V0) and BPO4 containing sample shows the highest LOI value (26.5). <正>Synergistic effects of layered double hydroxide(LDH) with intumescent flame retardanct(IFR) of phosphorus-nitrogen (NP) compound in the polypropylene/ethylene-propylene-diene/IFR/LDH(PP/EPDM/IFR/LDH) nanocomposites and related properties were studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),limiting oxygen index(LOI),UL-94 test, cone calorimeter test(CCT) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA).The XRD and TEM results show that the intercalated and/or exfoliated nanocomposites can be obtained by direct melt-intercalation of PP/EPDM into modified LDH and that LDH can promote the IFR additive NP to disperse more homogeneously in the polymer matrix. The SEM results provide positive evidence that more compact charred layers can be obtained from the PP/EPDM/NP/LDH sample than those from the PP/EPDM/LDH and PP/EPDM/NP samples during burning. The LOI and UL-94 rating tests show that the synergetic effects of LDH with NP can effectively increase the flame retardant properties of the PP/EPDM/NP/LDH samples. The data from the CCT and TGA tests indicate that the PP/EPDM/NP/LDH samples apparently decrease the HRR and MLR values and thus enhance the flame retardant properties and have better thermal stability than the PP/EPDM/LDH and PP/EPDM/NP samples.  相似文献

In this article, a novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) PNSFR containing three flame-retardant elements, phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur was designed and synthesized. Then a series of flame-retardant thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) were prepared using the PNSFR. The effects of the flame retardant on the flammability of TPU/PNSFR composites were investigated by limited oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 vertical burning. The results showed that TPU containing 10 mass% PNSFR had the highest LOI value (36) and could reach the V-0 rating. The flame-retardant mechanism of PNSFR in TPU was also disclosed using thermogravimetric analysis (TG), scanning electron micrograph, TG-infared spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The sulfur and phosphorus elements of PNSFR can be kept in residual char. Moreover, an optimal loading amount of the IFR in TPU is in favor of forming dense and continuous char layer to prevent heat transfer and the spread of flammable gases. The IFR PNSFR may find potential use for various flame-retardant polyurethanes.  相似文献
