The protein and oil contents and the activity of proteinase inhibitors in six varieties of soybean have been studied. It has been found that the specific amidase activity of trypsin inhibitors ranges from 170 to 320 nominal units. Fifteen varieties of soybean have been investigated for the amounts of protein, oil, and trypsin inhibitor that they contain. A high thermal stability of the latter has been detected. Information is given on the kinetics of the inhibition of the amidase and proteinase activity of trypsin. A highly polymeric fraction of nuclear DNA has been isolated from two-day shoots of the cotton plant. The DNA has been characterized by the methods of circular dichroism (CD), thermal denaturation, and ultracentrifugation. It has been established that the DNA preparation isolated has a molecular mass of 18·106 daltons, melts at 85.5°C in a fairly narrow interval, and reveals no heterogeneity of its intramolecular nucleotide composition. It has been shown by the CD method that in a solution of the cotton-plant DNA with relatively low ionic strength there is a tendency to the transformation of the B form into the C form.V. I. The amounts of protein and the activities of the proteinase (trypsin) inhibitors of 16 varieties of pea have been studied. The amount of protein ranged from 19.3 to 25.2% and the amidase activities of the trypsin inhibitors from 18 to 40.8 IU. It was found that the electrophoretic spectrum of the inhibitor-containing fraction of the pea seed protein consisted of 12–16 components with molecular masses of 14–89 kDa. The interactions with DNA of a synthetic peptide fragment of histone H1 33 amino acid residues long the sequence of which corresponds to fragment 152–184 and of a synthetic polypeptide (Lys-Ala-Ala)n modeling the properties of the C-terminal fragments of histone H1 have been studied by the CD method. The use of the CD method for recording the spectra of the polypeptides under investigation in the free state and of the artificial complexes of DNA formed with them has permitted the characterization of different structural possibilities of the polypeptides in solution and of their complexes with DNA, and the conformational changes of the components of the complex under various ionic conditions.V. Periodic acid does not oxidize delterine, an alkaloid fromDelphinium ternatum. However, the further oxidation of 19-oxodelterine, obtained on oxidation by Marion's method, led to oxosecodelterine, which is a semiacetal formed through the C-7 carbonyl group and the C-10 hydroxy group. A characterization of the histones of two varieties of the cotton plant,Gossypium hirsutum andG. barbadense, has been given with the aid of various electrophoretic systems. Their molecular weights have been determined. An analysis has been made of the cleavage of histone H1 at tyrosine residues. The regular polypeptides (Ala-Orn-Orn)n and (Ala-Orn-Lys)n have been synthesized by the polycondensation of the 2,4,5-trichlorophenyl esters of the corresponding tripeptides, which were obtained by the mixed-anhydride method. Benzyloxycarbonyl and tert-butoxycarbonyl groups were used for blocking the amino groups. The polycondensation was performed in dimethylformamide in the presence of triethylamine at room temperature for 6 days. The benzyloxycarbonyl groups were eliminated from the side chains of the polypeptides with 35% hydrogen bromide in glacial acetic acid. It has been shown by the method of circular dichroism that the adoption of the conformation of an extended left-hand helix is characteristic for both polypeptides, which model the terminal sections of histones.V.
