We report the in situ observation from diffraction data of the conversion of a gas hydrate with the structure II (sII) lattice to one with the structure I (sI) lattice. Initially, the in situ formation, dissociation, and reactivity of argon gas clathrate hydrate was investigated by time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction at temperatures ranging from 230 to 263 K and pressures up to 5000 psi (34.5 MPa). These samples were prepared from deuterated ice crystals and transformed to hydrate by pressurizing the system with argon gas. Complete transformation from D(2)O ice to sII Ar hydrate was observed as the sample temperature was slowly increased through the D(2)O ice melting point. The transformation of sII argon hydrate to sI hydrate was achieved by removing excess Ar gas and exposing the hydrate to liquid CO(2) by pressurizing the Ar hydrate with CO(2). Results suggest the sI hydrate formed from CO(2) exchange in argon sII hydrate is a mixed Ar/CO(2) hydrate. The proposed exchange mechanism is consistent with clathrate hydrate being an equilibrium system in which guest molecules are exchanging between encapsulated molecules in the solid hydrate and free molecules in the surrounding gas or liquid phase.  相似文献

Interactions of 13CO2 guest molecules with vapor-deposited porous H2O ices have been examined using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. Specifically, the trapping and release of 13CO2 by amorphous solid water (ASW) has been studied. The use of 13CO2 eliminates problems with background CO2. Samples were prepared by (i) depositing 13CO2 on top of ASW, (ii) depositing 13CO2 underneath ASW, and (iii) codepositing 13CO2 and H2O during ASW formation. Some of the deposited 13CO2 becomes trapped when the ice film is annealed. The amount of 13CO2 trapped in the film depends on the deposition method. The release of trapped molecules occurs in two stages. The majority of the trapped 13CO2 escapes during the ASW-to-cubic ice phase transition at 165 K, and the rest desorbs together with the cubic ice film at 185 K. We speculate that the presence of 13CO2 at temperatures up to 185 K is due to 13CO2 that is trapped in cavities within the ASW film. These cavities are similar to ones that trap the 13CO2 that is released during crystallization. The difference is that 13CO2 that remains at temperatures up to 185 K does not have access to escape pathways to the surface during crystallization.  相似文献

A range of techniques has so far been employed for producing amorphous aqueous solutions. In case of aqueous tetrahydrofuran (THF) this comprises hyperquenching of liquid droplets, vapour co-deposition and pressure-induced amorphization of the crystalline cubic structure II clathrate. All of these samples are thermally labile and crystallize at temperatures above 110 K. We here outline a variant of the pressure-amorphization protocol developed by Suzuki [Phys. Rev. B, 2004, 70, 172108], which results in a highly crystallization resistant amorphous THF hydrate. The hydrate produced according to our protocol (annealing to 180 K at 1.8 GPa rather than to 150 K at 1.5 GPa) does not transform to the cubic structure II THF clathrate even at 150 K. We track the reason for this higher stability to the presence of crystalline remnants when following the Suzuki protocol, which are removed when using our protocol involving higher pressures and an annealing step. These crystalline remnants later serve as crystallization seeds lowering the thermal stability of the amorphous sample. Our protocol thus makes a purely amorphous THF hydrate available to the research community. We use powder X-ray diffraction to study the process of nucleation and slow crystal growth in the temperature range 160-200 K and find that the local cage structure and periodicity of the fully crystalline hydrate develops even at the earliest stages of crystallization, when the "clathrate crystal" has a size of about two unit cells.  相似文献

High pressure and low temperature experiments with CO(2) hydrate were performed using diamond anvil cells and a helium-refrigeration cryostat in the pressure and temperature range of 0.2-3.0 GPa and 280-80 K, respectively. In situ x-ray diffractometry revealed that the phase boundary between CO(2) hydrate and water+CO(2) extended below the 280 K reported previously, toward a higher pressure and low temperature region. The results also showed the existence of a new high pressure phase above approximately 0.6 GPa and below 1.0 GPa at which the hydrate decomposed to dry ice and ice VI. In addition, in the lower temperature region of structure I, a small and abrupt lattice expansion was observed at approximately 210 K with decreasing temperature under fixed pressures. The expansion was accompanied by a release of water content from the sI structure as ice Ih, which indicates an increased cage occupancy. A similar lattice expansion was also described in another clathrate, SiO(2) clathrate, under high pressure. Such expansion with increasing cage occupancy might be a common manner to stabilize the clathrate structures under high pressure and low temperature.  相似文献

Experimentally determined equilibrium phase relations are reported for the system H2-THF-H2O as a function of aqueous tetrahydrofuran (THF) concentration from 260 to 290 K at pressures up to 45 MPa. Data are consistent with the formation of cubic structure-II (CS-II) binary H2-THF clathrate hydrates with a stoichiometric THF-to-water ratio of 1:17, which can incorporate modest volumes of molecular hydrogen at elevated pressures. Direct compositional analyses of the clathrate phase, at both low (0.20 mol %) and stoichiometric (5.56 mol %) initial THF aqueous concentrations, are consistent with observed phase behavior, suggesting full occupancy of large hexakaidecahedral (51264) clathrate cavities by THF, coupled with largely complete (80-90%) filling of small dodecahedral (512) cages by single H2 molecules at pressures of >30 MPa, giving a clathrate formula of (H2) < or =2.THF.17H2O. Results should help to resolve the current controversy over binary H2-THF hydrate hydrogen contents; data confirm recent reports that suggest a maximum of approximately 1 mass % H2, this contradicting values of up to 4 mass % previously claimed for comparable conditions.  相似文献

Guest-host hydrogen bonding in clathrate hydrates occurs when in addition to the hydrophilic moiety which causes the molecule to form hydrates under high pressure-low temperature conditions, the guests contain a hydrophilic, hydrogen bonding functional group. In the presence of carbon dioxide, ethanol clathrate hydrate has been synthesized with 10% of large structure I (sI) cages occupied by ethanol. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study hydrogen bonding structure and dynamics in this binary sI clathrate hydrate in the temperature range of 100-250 K. We observe that ethanol forms long-lived (>500 ps) proton-donating and accepting hydrogen bonds with cage water molecules from both hexagonal and pentagonal faces of the large cages while maintaining the general cage integrity of the sI clathrate hydrate. The presence of the nondipolar CO(2) molecules stabilizes the hydrate phase, despite the strong and prevalent alcohol-water hydrogen bonding. The distortions of the large cages from the ideal form, the radial distribution functions of the guest-host interactions, and the ethanol guest dynamics are characterized in this study. In previous work through dielectric and NMR relaxation time studies, single crystal x-ray diffraction, and molecular dynamics simulations we have observed guest-water hydrogen bonding in structure II and structure H clathrate hydrates. The present work extends the observation of hydrogen bonding to structure I hydrates.

The stability of structure H (sH) carbon dioxide clathrate hydrates at three temperature-pressure conditions are determined by molecular dynamics simulations on a 3x3x3 sH unit cell replica. Simulations are performed at 100 K at ambient pressure, 273 K at 100 bars and also 300 K and 5.0 kbars. The small and medium cages of the sH unit cell are occupied by a single carbon dioxide guest and large cage guest occupancies of 1-5 are considered. Radial distribution functions are given for guests in the large cages and unit cell volumes and configurational energies are studied as a function of large cage CO(2) occupancy. Free energy calculations are carried out to determine the stability of clathrates for large cage occupancies at three temperature/pressure conditions stated above. At the low temperature, large cage occupancy of 5 is the most stable while at the higher temperature, the occupancy of 3 is the most favored. Calculations are also performed to show that the CO(2) sH clathrate is more stable than the methane clathrate analog. Implications on CO(2) sequestration by clathrate formation are discussed.  相似文献

We report a thermodynamic study of the formation of tetrahydrofuran clathrate hydrate by explosive crystallization of water-deficient, near stoichiometric, and water-rich solutions, as well as of the heat capacity, C(p), of (i) supercooled tetrahydrofuran-H2O solutions and of the clathrate hydrate, (ii) tetrathydrofuran (THF) liquid, and (iii) supercooled water and the ice formed on its explosive crystallization. In explosive freezing of supercooled solutions at a temperature below 257 K, THF clathrate hydrate formed first. The nucleation temperature depends on the cooling rate, and excess water freezes on further cooling. The clathrate hydrate melts reversibly at 277 K and C(p) increases by 770 J/mol K on melting. The enthalpy of melting is 99.5 kJ/mol and entropy is 358 J/mol K. Molar C(p) of the empty host lattice is less than that of the ice, which is inconsistent with the known lower phonon frequency of H2O in the clathrate lattice. Analysis shows that C(p) of THF and ice are not additive in the clathrate. C(p) of the supercooled THF-H2O solutions is the same as that of water at 247 K, but less at lower temperatures and more at higher temperatures. The difference tends to become constant at 283 K. The results are discussed in terms of the hydrogen-bonding changes between THF and H2O.  相似文献

Classical molecular dynamics simulations are used to compare the stability of methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and mixed CO(2)N(2) structure I (sI) clathrates under deep ocean seafloor temperature and pressure conditions (275 K and 30 MPa) which were considered suitable for CO(2) sequestration. Substitution of methane guests in both the small and large sI cages by CO(2) and N(2) fluids are considered separately to determine the separate contributions to the overall free energy of substitution. The structure I clathrate with methane in small cages and carbon dioxide in large cages is determined to be the most stable. Substitutions of methane in the small cages with CO(2) and N(2) have positive free energies. Substitution of methane with CO(2) in the large cages has a large negative free energy and substitution of the methane in the large cages with N(2) has a small positive free energy. The calculations show that under conditions where storage is being considered, carbon dioxide spontaneously replaces methane from sI clathrates, causing the release of methane. This process must be considered if there are methane clathrates present where CO(2) sequestration is to be attempted. The calculations also indicate that N(2) does not directly compete with CO(2) during methane substitution or clathrate formation and therefore can be used as a carrier gas or may be present as an impurity. Simulations further reveal that the replacement of methane with CO(2) in structure II (sII) cages also has a negative free energy. In cases where sII CO(2) clathrates are formed, only single occupancy of the large cages will be observed.  相似文献

For the first time, the compositions of argon and methane high-pressure gas hydrates have been directly determined. The studied samples of the gas hydrates were prepared under high-pressure conditions and quenched at 77 K. The composition of the argon hydrate (structure H, stable at 460-770 MPa) was found to be Ar.(3.27 +/- 0.17)H(2)O. This result shows a good agreement with the refinement of the argon hydrate structure using neutron powder diffraction data and helps to rationalize the evolution of hydrate structures in the Ar-H(2)O system at high pressures. The quenched argon hydrate was found to dissociate in two steps. The first step (170-190 K) corresponds to a partial dissociation of the hydrate and the self-preservation of a residual part of the hydrate with an ice cover. Presumably, significant amounts of ice Ic form at this stage. The second step (210-230 K) corresponds to the dissociation of the residual part of the hydrate. The composition of the methane hydrate (cubic structure I, stable up to 620 MPa) was found to be CH(4).5.76H(2)O. Temperature dependence of the unit cell parameters for both hydrates has been also studied. Calculated from these results, the thermal expansivities for the structure H argon hydrate are alpha(a) = 76.6 K(-1) and alpha(c) = 77.4 K(-1) (in the 100-250 K temperature range) and for the cubic structure I methane hydrate are alpha(a) = 32.2 K(-1), alpha(a) = 53.0 K(-1), and alpha(a) = 73.5 K(-1) at 100, 150, and 200 K, respectively.  相似文献

Using the Gibbs function of reaction, equilibrium pressure, temperature conditions for the formation of methane clathrate hydrate have been calculated from the thermodynamic properties of phases in the system CH4-H2O. The thermodynamic model accurately reproduces the published phase-equilibria data to within +/-2 K of the observed equilibrium boundaries in the range 0.08-117 MPa and 190-307 K. The model also provides an estimate of the third-law entropy of methane hydrate at 273.15 K, 0.1 MPa of 56.2 J mol(-1) K(-1) for 1/nCH4.H2O, where n is the hydrate number. Agreement between the calculated and published phase-equilibria data is optimized when the hydrate composition is fixed and independent of the pressure and temperature for the conditions modeled.  相似文献

Hydrate formation rate and separation effect on the capture of CO2 from binary mixture v/a forming hydrate with 5 wt% tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) solution were studied. The results showed that the induction time was 5 min,and the hydrate formation process pressure of 7.30 MPa.The CO2 recovery was about 45% in the feed pressure range from 4.30 to 7.30 MPa.Under the feed pressure of 4.30 MPa,the maximum separation factor and CO2 concentration in hydrate phase were 7.3 and 38.2 tool%,respectively. The results demonstrated that TBAB accelerated hydrate formation and enriched CO2 in hydrate phase under the gentle condition.  相似文献

We have determined the time-space average filling of hydrogen molecules in a binary tetrahydrofuran (THF)-d(8) + D(2) sII clathrate hydrate using high resolution neutron diffraction. The filling of hydrogen in the lattice of a THF-d(8) clathrate hydrate occurred upon pressurization. The hydrogen molecules were localized in the small dodecahedral cavities at 20 K, with nuclear density from the hydrogen approximately spherically distributed and centered in the small cavity. With a formation pressure of 70 MPa, molecular hydrogen was found to only singly occupy the sII small cavity. This result helps explain discrepancies about the hydrogen occupancy in the THF binary hydrate system.  相似文献

The rapid conversion of vapor mixtures containing the gases CO(2), H(2)S, and HCN to clathrate hydrates was reported recently. The novel method is based on the pulsing of warm vapor mixtures, including a carrier gas, into a cold condensation chamber. With cooling, the vapors, which also include ~1% water and either tetrahydrofuran or trimethylene oxide as a catalyst, nucleate aqueous solution nanodroplets that, on a millisecond time scale, crystallize as hydrate nanoparticles that consume 100% of the water. Humid air approximates the content of mixtures used successfully in the vapor-to-hydrate conversions. FTIR spectra are examined for gas hydrates formed directly from air and air enriched with CO(2), as well as hydrate particles for which CO(2)(g) serves as both guest and aerosol medium. In each instance all of the water in the condensed phase converts to a clathrate hydrate. The subsecond ether-catalyzed formation of the hydrates near 230 K requires only a few percent of the CO(2) pressure used in conventional processes that yield fractional amounts of gas hydrates on an hour time scale in the same temperature range.  相似文献

In this contribution, we first found the novel clathrate hydrate containing two gaseous guests of hydrogen and carbon dioxide by spectroscopic analysis. X-ray powder diffraction and NMR spectroscopy were used to identify structure and guest distribution of the mixed H2 + CO2 hydrate. X-ray diffraction result confirmed that the unit cell parameter was 11.8602 +/- 0.0010 A, and the formed hydrate was identified as structure I hydrate. 1H magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR and 13C cross-polarization (CP) NMR spectroscopy were used to examine the distribution of hydrogen and carbon dioxide molecules in the cages of structure I, respectively. These NMR spectra showed that carbon dioxide molecules occupied both small 512 cages and large 51262 cages, and hydrogen molecules only were occluded in small 512 cages of structure I. The new finding of the mixed hydrogen hydrate is expected to contribute toward the development of hydrogen production technology and, particularly, inclusion chemistry.  相似文献

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy combined with a long-path collisional cooling cell was used to investigate the temporal evolution of CO2 nanoparticles and binary H2O/CO2 nanocomposites in the aerosol phase at 80 K. The experimental conditions for the formation of different CO2 particle shapes as slab, shell, sphere, cube, and needle have been studied by comparison with calculated data from the literature. The H2O/CO2 nanoparticles were generated with a newly developed multiple-pulse injection technique and with the simpler flow-in technique. The carbon dioxide nu3-vibration band at 2360 cm(-1) and the water ice OH-dangling band at 3700 cm(-1) were used to study the evolution of structure, shape, and contact area of the nanocomposites over 150 s. Different stages of binary nanocomposites with primary water ice cores were identified dependent on the injected CO2 portion: (a) disordered (amorphous) CO2 slabs on water particle surfaces, (b) globular crystalline CO2 humps sticking on the water cores, and (c) water cores being completely enclosed in bigger predominantly crystalline CO2 nanoparticles. However, regular CO2 shell structures on primary water particles showing both longitudinal (LO) and transverse (TO) optical mode features of the nu3-vibration band could not be observed. Experiments with reversed nucleation order indicate that H2O/CO2 composite particles with different initial structures evolve toward similar molecular nanocomposites with separated CO2 and H2O regions.  相似文献

We used a confocal scanning microscope to observe growth and texture change of ice due to the dissociation of methane gas clathrate hydrate (CH(4) hydrate). The experiments were done under CH(4) gas atmospheric pressure and isothermal conditions between 170 and 268 K. Above 193 K, the dissociation of CH(4) hydrate resulted in many small ice particles that covered the hydrate surface. These ice particles had roughly the same shape and density between 193 and 210 K. In contrast, above 230 K the ice particles developed into a sheet of ice that covered the hydrate surface. Moreover, the measured release of CH(4) gas decreased when the sheet of ice formed at the surface of the hydrate. These findings can explain the anomalous preservation behavior of CH(4) hydrate; that is, the known increase of storage stability of CH(4) hydrate above 240 K is likely related to the formation of the ice that we observed in the experiments.  相似文献

The formation of CH4-CO2 mixed gas hydrates was observed by measuring the change of vapor-phase composition using gas chromatography and Raman spectroscopy. Preferential consumption of carbon dioxide molecules was found during hydrate formation, which agreed well with thermodynamic calculations. Both Raman spectroscopic analysis and the thermodynamic calculation indicated that the kinetics of this mixed gas hydrate system was controlled by the competition of both molecules to be enclathrated into the hydrate cages. However, the methane molecules were preferentially crystallized in the early stages of hydrate formation when the initial methane concentration was much less than that of carbon dioxide. According to the Roman spectra, pure methane hydrates first formed under this condition. This unique phenomenon suggested that methane molecules play important roles in the hydrate formation process. These mixed gas hydrates were stored at atmospheric pressure and 190 K for over two months to examine the stability of the encaged gases. During storage, CO2 was preferentially released. According to our thermodynamic analysis, this CO2 release was due to the instability of CO2 in the hydrate structure under the storage conditions.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out by reacting H(2) gas with N(2) hydrate at a temperature of 243 K and a pressure of 15 MPa. The characterizations of the reaction products indicated that multiple H(2) molecules can be loaded into both large and small cages of structure II clathrate hydrates. The realization of multiple H(2) occupancy of hydrate cages under moderate conditions not only brings new insights into hydrogen clathrates but also refreshes the perspective of clathrate hydrates as hydrogen storage media.  相似文献
