We report here the synthesis and electrochemical and photophysical properties of a series of easily prepared dipolar organic dyes and their application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). For the six organic dyes, the molecular structures comprised a triphenylamine group as an electron donor, a cyanoacrylic acid as an electron acceptor, and an electron-deficient diphenylquinoxaline moiety integrated in the π-conjugated spacer between the electron donor and acceptor moieties. The incorporation of the electron-deficient diphenylquinoxaline moiety effectively reduces the energy gap of the dyes and broadly extends the spectral coverage. DSSCs based on dye 6 produced the best overall cell performance of 7.35?%, which translates to approximately 79?% of the intrinsic efficiency of the DSSCs based on the standard N719 dye under identical experimental conditions. The high performance of DSSCs based on dye 6 among the six dyes explored is attributed to the combined effects of high dye loading on a TiO(2) surface, rapid dye regeneration, and effective retardation of charge recombination.  相似文献

Organic dyes with ethoxy‐substituted oligo‐phenylenevinylene as chromophores were synthesized for dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), and the detailed relationships between the dye structures, photophysical properties, electrochemical properties, and performances of DSSCs were described. The dye S3O showed broad IPCE spectra in the spectral range of 350–750 nm, and the dye S1P showed solar energy‐to‐electricity conversion efficiency (() of up to 4.23% under AM 1.5 irradiation (100 mW/cm2) in comparison with the reference Ru‐complex (N719 dye) with an η value of 5.90% under similar experimental conditions.  相似文献

The high performances of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on seven new dyes are disclosed. Herein, the synthesis and electrochemical and photophysical properties of a series of intentionally designed dipolar organic dyes and their application in DSSCs are reported. The molecular structures of the seven organic dyes are composed of a triphenylamine group as an electron donor, a cyanoacrylic acid as an electron acceptor, and an electron‐deficient diphenylquinoxaline moiety integrated in the π‐conjugated spacer between the electron donor and acceptor moieties. The DSSCs based on the dye DJ104 gave the best overall cell performance of 8.06 %; the efficiency of the DSSC based on the standard N719 dye under the same experimental conditions was 8.82 %. The spectral coverage of incident photon‐to‐electron conversion efficiencies extends to the onset at the near‐infrared region due to strong internal charge‐transfer transition as well as the effect of electron‐deficient diphenylquinoxaline to lower the energy gap in these organic dyes. A combined tetraphenyl segment as a hydrophobic barrier in these organic dyes effectively slows down the charge recombination from TiO2 to the electrolyte and boosts the photovoltage, comparable to their RuII counterparts. Detailed spectroscopic studies have revealed the dye structure–cell performance correlations, to allow future design of efficient light‐harvesting organic dyes.  相似文献

A series of novel metal‐free organic dyes containing the thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole moiety were designed and synthesized for quasi‐solid‐state dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Different alkoxy chains were introduced into the electron donor part of the dye molecules for comparison. The optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for all sensitizers were systematically investigated. It was found that the sensitizers with the different alkoxy groups have similar photophysical and electrochemical properties, such as absorbance and energy levels, owing to their close chemical structures. However, the quasi‐solid‐state DSSCs based on the resulting sensitizers exhibit different performance parameters. The quasi‐solid‐state DSSC based on sensitizer FNE74 with two octyloxy chains possessed the highest solar energy conversion efficiency of 5.10 % under standard AM 1.5G sunlight illumination without the use of coadsorbant agents.  相似文献

All‐organic dyes have shown promising potential as an effective sensitizer in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The design concept of all‐organic dyes to improve light‐to‐electric‐energy conversion is discussed based on the absorption, electron injection, dye regeneration, and recombination. How the electron‐donor–acceptor‐type framework can provide better light harvesting through bandgap‐tuning and why proper arrangement of acceptor/anchoring groups within a conjugated dye frame is important in suppressing improper charge recombination in DSSCs are discussed. Separating the electron acceptor from the anchoring unit in the donor–acceptor‐type organic dye would be a promising strategy to reduce recombination and improve photocurrent generation.  相似文献

Dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on organic dyes adsorbed on oxide semiconductor electrodes, such as TiO2, ZnO, or NiO, which have emerged as a new generation of sustainable photovoltaic devices, have attracted much attention from chemists, physicists, and engineers because of enormous scientific interest in not only their construction and operational principles, but also in their high incident‐solar‐light‐to‐electricity conversion efficiency and low cost of production. To develop high‐performance DSSCs, it is important to create efficient organic dye sensitizers, which should be optimized for the photophysical and electrochemical properties of the dyes themselves, with molecular structures that provide good light‐harvesting features, good electron communication between the dye and semiconductor electrode and between the dye and electrolyte, and to control the molecular orientation and arrangement of the dyes on a semiconductor surface. The aim of this Review is not to make a list of a number of organic dye sensitizers developed so far, but to provide a new direction in the epoch‐making molecular design of organic dyes for high photovoltaic performance and long‐term stability of DSSCs, based on the accumulated knowledge of their photophysical and electrochemical properties, and molecular structures of the organic dye sensitizers developed so far.  相似文献

Developing photosensitizers suitable for the cobalt electrolyte and understanding the structure-property relationship of organic dyes is warranted for the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The DSSCs incorporating tris(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt(II/III)-based redox elec-trolyte and four synthesized organic dyes as photosensitizers are described. The photovoltaic performance of these dyes-sensitized solar cells employing the cobalt redox shuttle and the influences of the π-conjugated spacers of organic dyes upon the photovoltage and photocur-rent of mesoscopic titania solar cells are investigated. It is found that organic dyes with thiophene derivates as linkers are suitable for DSSCs employing cobalt electrolytes. DSSCs sensitized with the as-synthesized dyes in combination with the cobalt redox shuttle yield an overall power conversion efficiency of 6.1% under 100 mW/cm2 AM1.5 G illumination.  相似文献

A novel series of dipolar organic dyes containing diarylamine as the electron donor, 2‐cyanoacrylic acid as the electron acceptor, and fluorene and a heteroaromatic ring as the conjugating bridge have been developed and characterized. These metal‐free dyes exhibited very high molar extinction coefficients in the electronic absorption spectra and have been successfully fabricated as efficient nanocrystalline TiO2 dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The solar‐energy‐to‐electricity conversion efficiencies of DSSCs ranged from 4.92 to 6.88 %, which reached 68–96 % of a standard device of N719 fabricated and measured under the same conditions. With a TiO2 film thickness of 6 μm, DSSCs based on these dyes had photocurrents surpassing that of the N719‐based device. DFT computation results on these dyes also provide detailed structural information in connection with their high cell performance.  相似文献

Based on spiro[fluorene-9,90-xanthene](SFX, dye 1), the Lindqvist-type polyoxometalate(POM) functionalized with SFX and its derivatives(dyes 2-4) used in dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) were designed and investigated with the density functional theory(DFT) and time-dependent DFT(TD-DFT) calculations. The results indicate that Lindqvist-type POM is the main contribution to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital(LUMO) and affects the LUMO energies of dyes 2-4. The maximum absorptions of the designed dyes containing POM(dyes 2-4) are red shifted comparing with that of dye 1. The introduction of electron-donating group onto SFX segment is helpful to red shift the absorption spectra. The major factors affecting the performance of DSSCs, including light harvesting and electron injection were evaluated. Considering the absorption spectra and photovoltaic parameters, dyes 3 and 4 are promising high performance dye sensitizers in n-type DSSCs.  相似文献

A series of new push–pull organic dyes ( BT‐I – VI ), incorporating electron‐withdrawing bithiazole with a thiophene, furan, benzene, or cyano moiety, as π spacer have been synthesized, characterized, and used as the sensitizers for dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In comparison with the model compound T1 , these dyes containing a thiophene moiety between triphenylamine and bithiazole display enhanced spectral responses in the red portion of the solar spectrum. Electrochemical measurement data indicate that the HOMO and LUMO energy levels can be tuned by introducing different π spacers between the bithiazole moiety and cyanoacrylic acid acceptor. The incorporation of bithiazole substituted with two hexyl groups is highly beneficial to prevent close π–π aggregation, thus favorably suppressing charge recombination and intermolecular interaction. The overall conversion efficiencies of DSSCs based on bithiazole dyes are in the range of 3.58 to 7.51 %, in which BT‐I ‐based DSSCs showed the best photovoltaic performance: a maximum monochromatic incident photon‐to‐current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 81.1 %, a short‐circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) of 15.69 mA cm?2, an open‐circuit photovoltage (Voc) of 778 mV, and a fill factor (ff) of 0.61, which correspond to an overall conversion efficiency of 7.51 % under standard global AM 1.5 solar light conditions. Most importantly, long‐term stability of the BT‐I – III ‐based DSSCs with ionic‐liquid electrolytes under 1000 h of light soaking was demonstrated and BT‐II with a furan moiety exhibited better photovoltaic performance of up to 5.75 % power conversion efficiency.  相似文献

Double donor-acceptor (D-A) branched dyes (DBD) with a phenothiazine unit as electron donor and a 2-cyanoacrylic acid unit as electron acceptor were synthesized and used as sensitizers for solar cells (DSSCs). The conversion efficiency of the DSSCs amounts up to 4.22% (2.91% for the single D-A branched dye) under AM 1.5 G irradiation. The results show that the performance of DSSCs can be effectively enhanced by the cooperation of two donor-acceptor containing branches in one molecule of the dyes.  相似文献

Cosensitization of broadly absorbing ruthenium metal complex dyes with highly absorptive near-infrared (NIR) organic dyes is a clear pathway to increase near-infrared light harvesting in liquid-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). In cosensitized DSCs, dyes are intimately mixed, and intermolecular charge and energy transfer processes play an important role in device performance. Here, we demonstrate that an organic NIR dye incapable of hole regeneration is able to produce photocurrent via intermolecular energy transfer with an average excitation transfer efficiency of over 25% when cosensitized with a metal complex sensitizing dye (SD). We also show that intermolecular hole transfer from the SD to NIR dye is a competitive process with dye regeneration, reducing the internal quantum efficiency and the electron lifetime of the DSC. This work demonstrates the general feasibility of using energy transfer to boost light harvesting from 700 to 800 nm and also highlights a key challenge for developing highly efficient cosensitized dye-sensitized solar cells.  相似文献

A series of metal‐free organic donor–π bridge–acceptor dyes are studied computationally using density functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent DFT (TDDFT) approaches to explore their potential performances in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Taking triphenylamine (TPA) and cyanoacrylic acid moieties as donor and acceptor units, respectively, the effects of different substituents of the π linkers in the TPA‐based dyes on the energy conversion efficiency of the DSSCs are theoretically evaluated through optimized geometries, charge distributions, electronic structures, simulated absorption spectra, and free energies of injection. The results show that the molecular orbital energy levels and electron‐injection driving forces of the TPA dyes can be tuned by the introduction of substituents with different electron‐withdrawing or ‐donating abilities. The electron‐withdrawing substituent always lowers the energies of both frontier orbitals, while the electron‐donating one heightens them simultaneously. The efficiency trend of these TPA derivatives as sensitizers in DSSCs is also predicted by analyzing the light‐harvesting efficiencies and the free energies of injection. The following substituents are shown to increase the efficiency of the dye: OMe, OEt, OHe, and OH.  相似文献

A series of novel organic dyes (ICZA1, ICZA2, ICZA3, ICZA4) with D-π-A structural configuration incorporating indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole moiety as donor (D) unit, thiophene as π-linker and 2-cyanoacrylic acid as acceptor unit were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. Indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole-based D-π-A dyes composed of different acceptor groups were designed. By modulating acceptor unit, the efficiency of D-π-A dye-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) can be further improved. In the present work, four novel push-pull organic dyes only differing in electron acceptor, have been designed based on the experimental literature value of IC-2. In order to further improve the light harvesting capability of indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole dyes, the acceptor influence on the dye performance were examined. The NLO property of the designed dye molecules can be derived as polarizability and hyperpolarizability. The calculated value of ICZA2 dye is the best candidate for NLO properties. Furthermore, the designed organic dyes exhibit good photovoltaic performance of charge transfer characteristics, driving force of electron injection, dye regeneration, global reactivity, and light harvesting efficiency (LHE). From the calculated value of ICZA4 dye, it has been identified as a good candidate for DSSCs applications. Finally, it is concluded that the both ICZA2 and ICZA4 dyes theoretically agrees well with the experimental value of IC-2 dye. Hence, the dyes ICZA2 and ICZA4 can serve as an excellent electron withdrawing groups for NLO and DSSCs applications.  相似文献

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are the most promising alternatives to traditional fossil energy because of their advantages of low production cost, facile structure, relatively low environmental impact, relatively high photoelectronic absorption efficiency, and overall high efficiency. In addition, several studies on sensitizers as vital components have been conducted over the last three decades. Compared to metal dyes, metal-free organic dyes have been considered as promising candidates because of their simple fabrication, multiple structures, high molar absorption coefficients, easily tunable properties, and environmental friendliness. In this study, we systematically investigated the optoelectronic properties of six metal-free organic donor-acceptor dyes (RD1–6) derived from the known dye R6 by using the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT methods. Cell performance parameters were discussed, including the geometrical and electronic structures, absorption spectrum, adsorption energy, light harvesting efficiency (LHE) curve, predictive short circuit current density (JscPred.), predictive open circuit voltage (VocPred.), and theoretical power conversion efficiency (PCE). Results revealed that all the designed dyes exhibited high theoretical PCE. In particular, dyes RD1, 2, and 4–6 showed greater conjugations, and dyes RD1–3 had smaller energy gaps than those of the reference dye. In addition, dyes RD1–3, 5, and 6 exhibited better light harvesting capacities that covered the entire visible region and extended to the near-infrared region with obviously red-shift maximum absorption wavelengths (λmax), wider LHE curves, and higher JscPred. as compared to the reference dye. It was critical that dyes RD1 and 2 not only have greater conjugations and narrow band gaps but also good light harvesting capacities with more than 56-nm red-shift maximum absorption wavelengths and broadened LHE curves than those of the reference dye. Notably, mainly because of an average increment of 12.0% of JscPred., a remarkable increment of the theoretical power conversion efficiency was observed from 12.6% for dye R6 to 14.1% for dyes RD1 and 2. Thus, dyes RD1 and 2 exhibited superior cell performances and could be promising sensitizer candidates for highly efficient DSSCs. These results could be used to guide effective synthetic efforts in the discovery of efficient metal-free organic dye sensitizers in DSSCs.  相似文献

A detailed study of the synthesis and photophysical properties of a new series of dipolar organic photosensitizers that feature a 1,3‐cyclohexadiene moiety integrated into the π‐conjugated structural backbone has been carried out. Dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on these structurally simple dyes have shown appreciable photo‐to‐electrical energy conversion efficiency, with the highest one up to 4.03 %. Solvent‐dependent fluorescence studies along with the observation of dual emission on dye 4 b and single emission on dyes 4 a and 32 suggest that dye 4 b possesses a highly polar emissive excited state located at a lower‐energy position than at the normal emissive excited state. A detailed photophysical investigation in conjunction with computational studies confirmed the twisted intramolecular charge‐transfer (TICT) state to be the lowest emissive excited state for dye 4 b in polar solvents. The relaxation from higher‐charge‐injection excited states to the lowest TICT state renders the back‐electron transfer process a forbidden one and significantly retards the charge recombination to boost the photocurrent. The electrochemical impedance under illumination and transient photovoltage decay studies showed smaller charge resistance and longer electron lifetime in 4 b ‐based DSSC compared to the DSSCs with reference dyes 4 a and 32 , which further illustrates the positive influence of the TICT state on the performance of DSSCs.  相似文献

In dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), the dye material plays a crucial role in determining the amount of electrical current obtained, which is the primary outcome of the cell. Therefore, it is crucial to explain the performance of a dye at a molecular level. This work investigates using density functional theory and time-dependent density (DFT and TD-DFT, respectively) four experimentally tested anthanthrene-based dyes abbreviated as D1 to D4. The four dyes differ in their alkyl-substitutions (nonane or 3-ethylheptane) and the number of anchoring groups (one/two cyanoacrylic acid/s). To study the effect of these two structural features, the work involves the calculations of the geometrical structures, electronic and optical properties of isolated forms. In addition, the adsorption behaviour of these dyes on TiO2 clusters was explained. Properties such as the adsorption energies, and electro-optical properties were calculated and discussed.  相似文献

Organic dyes with a D-π-A structure have drawn increasing attention as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), due to their rich photophysical properties, easy molecular tailoring, and low-cost production. This review mainly focuses on the relationship between dye structure and photovoltaic properties for organic dyes containing cyanoacrylic acid as both an anchor and an acceptor. This review also introduces different donors and π-conjugation units as building blocks for sensitizer synthesis.  相似文献
