The photocontrolled phase transitions and reflection behaviors of a smectic liquid crystal, 4‐octyl‐4′‐cyanobiphenyl (8CB), tuned by a chiral azobenzene, are systematically investigated. For the smectic 8CB doped with the chiral azobenzene (1R)‐(?)‐4‐n‐hexyl‐4′‐menthylazobenzene (ABE), the initial smectic phase can be switched to cholesteric and then to isotropic upon UV irradiation due to the trans‐to‐cis photoisomerization of ABE; however, no reflection band is observed. For the smectic 8CB doped with ABE and the chiral agent (S)‐(?)‐1,1′‐binaphthyl‐2,2′‐diol (BN), a reflection band located in the short‐wavelength infrared region is observed, which disappears after further UV irradiation. For the smectic 8CB doped with ABE and a chiral agent with higher helical twisting power, (S)‐2,2′‐methylendioxy‐1,1′‐binaphthalene (DBN), a phototunable system with cholesteric pitch short enough to reflect visible light is demonstrated. With a given concentration of the chiral dopant DBN, a reversible reflection color transition is realized tuned by the isomerization of azobenzene. The reverse phase transition from isotropic to cholesteric and then to smectic can be recovered upon visible irradiation. The photocontrolled phase transitions in smectic liquid crystals and the corresponding changes in reflection band switched by photoisomerization of azobenzene may provide impetus for their practical application in optical memories, displays, and switches.  相似文献

We have developed a new strategy for the preparation of a light-responsive ionic liquid crystal (LC) that shows photo-switchable proton conduction. The ionic LC consists of a bowl-shaped calix[4]arene core ionically functionalized with azobenzene moieties. The non-covalent architectures were obtained by the formation of ionic salts between the carboxylic acid group of an azo-derivative and the terminal amine groups of a calixarene core. The presence of ionic salts results in a hierarchical self-assembly process that extends to the formation of a nanostructured lamellar LC arrangement (smectic A phase). In this LC phase, the ionic LC calixarene is able to display proton conductive properties, since the ionic nanosegregated areas (formed by the ionic pairs) generate the continuous channels that favor proton transport. The optical and photo-responsive properties were studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy, demonstrating that the azobenzene moieties of the ionic LC undergo reversible (E)-to-(Z) isomerization by irradiation with UV light. Interestingly, this (E)-to-(Z) photoisomerization results in a decrease of the proton conductivity values since the bent-shaped (Z)-isomer disrupts the lamellar LC phase. This isomerization process is totally reversible and leads to an ionic LC material with unique photo-switchable proton conductive properties.  相似文献

Diacids with variable spacer length were prepared by condensation of trimellitic anhydride and ω-amino acids. From these diacids, homopolyesters were prepared by thermal condensation with the acetates of hydroquinone or 4,4′-dihydroxy biphenyl and a series of copolyesters containing 4-hydroxy benzoic acid. The same LC poly(ester imide)s could also be prepared in a “one-pot procedure” from trimellitic anhydrid, lactams, and bisphenol acetates. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) traces of most poly(ester imide)s exhibit two endotherms representing the solid → LC phase transition (Tm1) and the LC phase → isotropic melt transition (Tm2). Observation under the polarizing microscope and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements suggest that the LC phase formed immediately above the melting points (Tm1) have a smectic character. Poly(ester imide)s of 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl possess higher melting points and a broader temperature range of the LC phase than those of hydroquinone. The copolyesters possess a nematic melt over a broad temperature range. Thermomechanical analyses under low pressure (0.05 kg/mm2) gave heat distortion temperatures close to the melting points (Tm1), and under high pressure (1 kg/mm2), values between Tm1 and the glass transition temperatures (Tg). Thermogravimetric measurements indicate that processing from the melt is feasible up to temperatures around 340°C.  相似文献

Binary mixtures were prepared from an azobenzene derivative and a liquid-crystal (LC) compound that exhibits smectic?C (SmC) and bicontinuous cubic (Cub(bi)) LC phases. Reversible switching between the two phases in response to UV-light irradiation was observed. This light-driven SmC-to-Cub(bi) transition is the first example showing the increased dimensionality of molecular ordering with isomerization of azobenzenes (see figure).  相似文献

A series of side‐chain liquid‐crystalline (LC) homopolymers of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] with different degrees of polymerization were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which were prepared with a wide range of number‐average molecular weights from 5.1 × 103 to 20.6 × 103 with narrow polydispersities of around 1.17. Thermal investigation showed that the homopolymers exhibit two mesophases, a smectic phase, and a nematic phase, and the phase‐transition temperatures of the homopolymers increase clearly with increasing molecular weights. A series of novel LC coil triblock copolymers with narrow polydispersities was synthesized by ATRP, and their thermotropic phase behavior was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The LC coil triblocks were designed to have an LC conformation of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] with a wide range of molecular weights from 3.5 × 103 to 1.7 × 104 and the coil conformation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (number‐average molecular weight: 6000 or 12,000) segment. Their characterization was investigated with 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and gel permeation chromatography. Triblock copolymers exhibited a crystalline phase, a smectic phase, and a nematic phase. The phase‐transition temperatures from the smectic to nematic phase and from the nematic to isotropic phase increased, and the crystallization of PEG depressed with increasing molecular weight of the LC block. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 4‐Arm star side‐chain liquid crystalline (LC) polymers containing azobenzene with different terminal substituents were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Tetrafunctional initiator prepared by the esterification between pentaerythritol and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide was utilized to initiate the polymerization of 6‐[4‐(4‐methoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate (MMAzo) and 6‐[4‐(4‐ethoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate (EMAzo), respectively. The 4‐arm star side‐chain LC polymer with p‐methoxyazobenzene moieties exhibits a smectic and a nematic phase, while that with p‐ethoxyazobenzene moieties shows only a nematic phase, which derives of different terminal substituents. The star polymers have similar LC behavior to the corresponding linear homopolymers, whereas transition temperatures decrease slightly. Both star polymers show photoresponsive isomerization under the irradiation with UV–vis light. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 3342–3348, 2007  相似文献

A series of main‐chain, thermotropic, liquid‐crystalline (LC), hydrogen‐bonded polymers or self‐assembled structures based on 4,4′‐bipyridyl as a hydrogen‐bond acceptor and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, such as adipic and sebacic acids, as hydrogen‐bond donors were prepared by a slow evaporation technique from a pyridine solution and were characterized for their thermotropic, LC properties with a number of experimental techniques. The homopolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic acid exhibited high‐order and low‐order smectic phases, and that with sebacic acid exhibited only a high‐order smectic phase. Like the homopolymer with adipic acid, the two copolymers of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (75/25 and 25/75) also exhibited two types of smectic phases. In contrast, the copolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (50/50), like the homopolymer with sebacic acid, exhibited only one high‐order smectic phase. Each of them, including the copolymers, had a broad temperature range of LC phases (36–51 °C). The effect of copolymerization for these hydrogen‐bonded polymers on the thermotropic properties was examined. Generally, copolymerization increased the temperature range of LC phases for these polymers, as expected, with a larger decrease in the crystal‐to‐LC transition than in the LC‐to‐isotropic transition. Additionally, it neither suppressed the formation of smectic phases nor promoted the formation of a nematic phase in these hydrogen‐bonded polymers, as usually observed in many thermotropic LC polymers. The thermal transitions for all of them, measured by differential scanning calorimetry, were well below their decomposition temperatures, as measured by thermogravimetric analysis, which were in the temperature range of 193–210 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

A radial hydrodynamic flow in the nematic phase of free, suspended cylindrical films of 4-n-heptyl- and decyloxybenzoic acid and in 4,4′-di-n-heptyl-oxyazoxybenzene has been observed. The flow starts about 7°C before the phase transition into the smectic C phase. Under the same experimental conditions such a hydrodynamic flow is not established in free nematic films of 4-n-heptyl-and octyloxy-4′-cyanobiphenyl, 4,4′-dimethoxyazoxybenzene and N-(4-ethoxybenzylidene)-4′-n-butylaniline after the completion of the transition from the isotropic liquid to the nematic phase. The observed hydrodynamic flow is explained by a non-linear temperature dependence of the surface tension.  相似文献

Two series of novel liquid crystalline photo‐crosslinkable bis(vanillylidene‐azobenzene) cycloalkanone containing polymers, namely poly(vanillylidene alkyloxy‐4,4′‐azobenzenedicarboxylic ester)s, have been synthesised from bis[m‐hydroxyalkyloxy(vanillylidene)cycloalkanone] (m = 6, 8, 10) with azobenzene dicarbonylchloride by solution polycondensation method at ambient temperature. Polymers with varying spacer lengths have been synthesised and characterised by spectroscopic techniques. These variations have been correlated with the thermal properties and transition temperatures. Thermal transitions were analysed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the mesophases were identified by hot stage optical polarised microscopy (HOPM). All of the polymers were found to exhibit liquid crystalline properties. Transition temperatures were observed to decrease with increasing spacer length. The thermogravimetric analysis reveals that all of the polymers were stable up to 280°C undergo two‐stage decomposition. Using the UV–visible photolysis studies we investigated the simultaneous behaviour of reactivity rates of crosslinking in the vanillylidene unit and isomerisation caused by the azobenzene unit in the photo‐crosslinkable main chain liquid crystalline polymers. The photolysis of liquid crystalline bis(vanillylidene)cycloalkanone‐based polymers reveals that there are two kinds of photoreactions in these systems: the EZ photoisomerisation of azobenzene unit and 2p+2p addition by vanillylidene units. The EZ photoisomerisation in the liquid crystal phase disrupts the parallel stacking of the mesogens, resulting in the transition from the liquid crystal phase to isotropic phase. The photoreaction involving 2p+2p addition of the bis(vanillylidene)cycloalkanone units in the polymers results in the conjoining of the chains. The cyclopentanone polymers exhibited a faster rate of photolysis than the cyclohexanone polymers.  相似文献

Organic–inorganic hybrid liquid crystal (LC) gels have been synthesised by the thiol-ene reaction of a multifunctional cyclic siloxane, 1,3,5,7-tetravinyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TVMCTS) and alkane dithiols, 1,6-hexanedithiol (HDT) or 1,9-decanedithiol (DDT), in LC matrices, 4-cyano-4?-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) or 4′-n-octyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (8CB). The LC gels were prepared in an isotropic phase at 70°C or mesophases at 25°C using radical initiators. The phase transition temperatures from a mesophase to an isotropic phase of the resulting gels were lower than those of the original LCs. The gels containing 8CB (8CB gels) prepared at 25°C showed two phase transitions: smectic-to-nematic and nematic-to-isotropic transitions. By contrast, the 8CB gels synthesised in the isotropic phase showed only one phase transition from smectic phase directly to isotropic phase. Reaction conversions in the LC gels prepared at 70°C were higher than that in the gels prepared at 25°C. Scanning microscopic light scattering analysis of the LC gels cleared homogeneous small size mesh with a small amount of large defect. Polarisation micrographs of the LC gels showed framed optical textures derived from the LC molecules at room temperature. The LC gels containing more than 90 wt% of LC showed electro-optic response.  相似文献

For the first time, a photochromic azobenzene-containing liquid crystalline (LC) acrylic polymer was used for gelation of low-molar-mass nematic mixture (LMNM). Dissolution of LC polymer in amount of only 2.5 wt.% in LMNM at 120°C (isotropic state) followed by cooling down results in formation of the solid-like photochromic LC gel. Gelation is associated with a phase separation and formation of microsized LC polymer domains, which form a physical “network” containing encapsulated nematic host. Textural changes of mixture during gel formation were analyzed, and absorbance spectra were measured. A special attention was paid to the kinetic study of photoinduced E-Z and Z-E isomerization of azobenzene side groups of polymer in gel. It was shown that ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation and E-Z isomerization processes are accompanied by disruption of H-aggregates of azobenzene moieties and partial dissolution of polymer.  相似文献

Thermotropic liquid‐crystalline (LC) semirigid polyesters based on three terphenyl analogues of 1,3,4‐thiadiazole (2,5‐diphenyl‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole)s (DPTD) linking undecamethyleneoxy chain at different substituted positions were synthesized from three disubstituted (4,4′‐, 3,4′‐, and 3,3′‐) dioxydiundecanols of DPTD and four diesters, and the relationships between polymer structures and LC and optical properties were investigated. DSC measurements, texture observations, and wide‐angle X‐ray analyses revealed that the polymers composed of DPTD moiety having a more linear molecular structure and 1,4‐phenylene unit or short aliphatic chain tend to exhibit LC smectic C and/or A phases. The following observations were made: (1) the emergence of smectic C and/or A phases in all the polymers on the basis of 4,4′‐disubstituted DPTD, (2) formation of enantiotropic smectic C and/or A phases in the polymers containing a 1,4‐phenylene unit in the main chain, (3) formation of a more stable smectic C phase in the polymers having a short aliphatic [(CH2)4] chain, and (4) a decrease of the mesomorphic property of the polyesters in the order of 4,4′‐DPTD > 3,4′‐DPTD > 3,3′‐DPTD. Solution and solid‐state ultraviolet–visible and photoluminescent spectra indicated that all the polyesters display maximum absorbances and blue emissions arising from the DPTD moiety, whose peak maxima were shifted to lower wavelengths in the order of 4,4′‐DPTD > 3,4′‐DPTD > 3,3′‐DPTD as well as the aforementioned LC property. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A ribbon‐shaped chiral liquid crystalline (LC) dendrimer with photochromic azobenzene mesogens and an isosorbide chiral center (abbreviated as AZ3DLC) was successfully synthesized and its major phase transitions were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and linear polarized optical microscopy (POM). Its ordered structures at different temperatures were further identified through structure‐sensitive diffraction techniques. Based on the experimental results, it was found that the AZ3DLC molecule exhibited the low‐ordered chiral smectic (Sm*) LC phase with 6.31 nm periodicity at a high‐temperature phase region. AZ3DLC showed the reversible photoisomerization in both organic solvents and nematic (N) LC media. As a chiral‐inducing agent, it exhibited a good solubility, a high helical‐twisting power, and a large change in the helical‐twisting power due to its photochemical isomerization in the commercially available N LC hosts. Therefore, we were able to reversibly “remote‐control” the colors in the whole visible region by finely tuning the helical pitch of the spontaneously formed helical superstructures.  相似文献

Abstract

Polymer chain diffusion in the nematic mesophase was studied using a model main chain liquid crystalline (LC) polyether based on 2,2′-dimethyl-4,4′-dihydroxyazoxybenzene and mixed alkane spacers. A side chain LC polymethacrylate containing an azobenzene mesogenic group was also investigated. Tracer diffusion coefficients were determined as a function of temperature by an ion-beam depth profiling technique, forward recoil spectrometry. The results confirm that main chain LC polymer chain dynamics are dramatically affected by phase transitions and sample geometry. This behaviour is in marked contrast to the side chain LC polymer which exhibited no phase dependence on the part of the tracer diffusion coefficient.  相似文献

Liquid crystalline α-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]- ω -(4′-methoxybiphenyl-4-oxy)alkane hydrochlorides with different spacer lengths (6, 8, 10 methylene units) have been synthesized and characterized by NMR, DSC, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The melting temperatures of the hydrochlorides decrease with increasing number of methylene units in the spacer. Highly ordered and very viscous liquid crystalline (LC1) smectic phases are formed on melting. Upon further heating these phases are transformed into a less viscous smectic C phase (LC2). The temperature of the LC1-LC2 transition decreases and the temperature of the LC2 to isotropic phase transition (LC2-I transition) increases with increasing number of methylene units in the spacer.  相似文献

Three sets of novel side-chain liquid crystalline polymers with monosubstituted azobenzene moieties in the side-chain have been studied. These are poly(p-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyhexyloxy azobenzene) benzyl methacrylate) (PPHABM), poly(m-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyhexyloxy azobenzene) benzyl methacrylate) (PMHABM) and poly(o-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyhexyloxy azobenzene) benzyl methacrylate) (POHABM). The chemical structure of the monomers was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The structural characterisation of the polymers was performed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography, and their phase behaviour and liquid crystalline properties were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, polarised optical microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The results show that the transitional behaviour of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers containing monosubstituted azobenzene moieties depends strongly on the position of the substituent on the azobenzene moiety; for example, the ortho-monosubstituted polymers do not form liquid crystalline phases, but all the para- and meta-monosubstituted polymers exhibit a smectic A phase. Furthermore, the glass transition temperature (Tg ) of the polymers decreases in the order, para > meta > ortho. For the PPHABM and PMHABM polymers the isotropic temperature (Ti ) and liquid crystalline range (ΔT, from Tg to Ti ) are found to be in the order, para > meta, although it is surprising that the associated enthalpy changes in these polymers is the opposite order, meta > para.  相似文献

The structure of bis(4,4′′‐decyloxy‐p‐terphenyl‐2′‐ylmethyl) carbonate, C79H110O7, (I), has been determined at 123 K. It is a new type of twin mesogen. No two adjacent aromatic rings are coplanar and the four decyloxy side chains are maximally extended. Molecules of the compound are packed along the crystallographic a axis. The molecular arrangement is a precursor of a smectic A phase.  相似文献

Abstract

Mesomorphic phase transitions of 4,4′-bis(ω-hydroxyalkoxy)-azoxybenzenes (number of carbons in the alkoxy group n = 2,3,6,8,11 and 12) have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy. For the n = 8 compound, an optically isotropic (01) mesophase reminiscent of the smectic D phase was observed in the temperature range of 4 0 M 1 1 K between smectic C (below 400 K) and nematic (above 41 1 K) phases. On the other hand, the 0 1 mesophase was not observed in the other homologues used here; the n = 2,3 and 6 compounds had only a nematic phase and the n= 11 and 12 compounds had only a smectic C phase. This preliminary work points out that the thermal and optical properties of the 01 phase for the n = 8 compound are very similar to those of the smectic D phase.  相似文献

Based on 2, 5‐bis[(4‐alkoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrenes (M‐OCm, m is the number of the carbons of alkyl tails, m = 1, 4, and 18), three series of binary copolymers with high‐molecular weights, {poly(M‐OC1‐co‐M‐OC4), poly(M‐OC1‐co‐M‐OC18), and poly(M‐OC4‐co‐M‐OC18)} have been prepared via free‐radical polymerization. The random nature of the copolymers was expected on the basis of the assumed similar reactivities because of the analogous monomers. The phase behaviors of copolymers were studied by DSC, POM, and one‐dimensional wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The results showed that liquid crystalline (LC) phase structures of copolymers, containing smectic phase, reentrant isotropic phase, columnar phase. and isotropic phase, were strongly depended on the composition and the alkyl length due to the competing among the steric effect, the microphase separation and the driving force of the entropy. When one of them occupied a dominant position, the LC phase structure can be presented for the copolymers. Otherwise, the LC phase structure is lost despite the pair of corresponding homopolymers forming mesogenic structure. Therefore, through copolymerization, LC behavior of the mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymers can be greatly varied. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym.
