Symmetric‐ and asymmetric hexaarylbenzenes (HABs), each substituted with three electron‐donor triarylamine redox centers and three electron‐acceptor triarylborane redox centers, were synthesized by cobalt‐catalyzed cyclotrimerization, thereby forming compounds with six‐ and four donor–acceptor interactions, respectively. The electrochemical‐ and photophysical properties of these systems were investigated by cyclovoltammetry (CV), as well as by absorption‐ and fluorescence spectroscopy, and compared to a HAB that only contained one neighboring donor–acceptor pair. CV measurements of the asymmetric HAB show three oxidation peaks and three reduction peaks, whose peak‐separation is greatly influenced by the conducting salt, owing to ion‐pairing and shielding effects. Consequently, the peak‐separations cannot be interpreted in terms of the electronic couplings in the generated mixed‐valence species. Transient‐absorption spectra, fluorescence‐solvatochromism, and absorption spectra show that charge‐transfer states from the amine‐ to the boron centers are generated after optical excitation. The electronic donor–acceptor interactions are weak because the charge transfer has to occur predominantly through space. Moreover, the excitation energy of the localized excited charge‐transfer states can be redistributed between the aryl substituents of these multidimensional chromophores within the fluorescence lifetime (about 60 ns). This result was confirmed by steady‐state fluorescence‐anisotropy measurements, which further indicated symmetry‐breaking in the superficially symmetric HAB. Adding fluoride ions causes the boron centers to lose their accepting ability owing to complexation. Consequently, the charge‐transfer character in the donor–acceptor chromophores vanishes, as observed in both the absorption‐ and fluorescence spectra. However, the ability of the boron center as a fluoride sensor is strongly influenced by the moisture content of the solvent, possibly owing to the formation of hydrogen‐bonding interactions between water molecules and the fluoride anions.  相似文献

In order to form suitable systems designed for resonance energy transfer, a series of monodisperse methacrylate‐based monomers containing rigid π‐conjugated oligo(phenylene ethynylenes) with different sizes of the conjugated systems ( M1 – M3 ), and therefore different optoelectronic properties, were synthesized and subsequently polymerized using the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization technique ( P1 – P3 ). In addition, these oligomers were also copolymerized with methyl methacrylate. The obtained polymers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and analytical ultracentrifugation. The photophysical properties of the polymers were studied by UV–vis absorption and emission spectroscopy in diluted solutions as well as in thin films and compared to the photophysics of the corresponding monomers. Thereby, changes going from monomeric to polymeric systems could be detected in fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes pointing to energy trapping, e.g., energy transfer. Donor–acceptor copolymers containing different numbers of monomeric units within the side chain exhibit differences in the emission spectra, indicating that energy trapping in polymers is very sensitive to structural properties such as the chain length. UV–vis absorption spectroscopy as well as time‐resolved lifetime studies indicate intrapolymer and interpolymer energy transfer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel structurally well‐defined oligothienylene–ethynylene‐based dendritic macromolecules up to the 3rd generation (G3) were successfully synthesized by a combination of Pd‐catalyzed Sonogashira‐type cross‐coupling and oxidative homocoupling steps. Oxidative homocoupling of dendrons successfully afforded dendrimers up to the 2nd generation (G2). In contrast, the G3 dendrimer was effectively prepared by a four‐fold Sonogashira‐type cross‐coupling reaction. All compounds showed broad and structureless absorption and emission spectra arising from the presence of different π‐conjugated chromophores. With increasing generation, a bathochromic shift of the π–π* absorption band and an increase of the absorption coefficient were observed. The insertion of ethynylene groups into the conjugated dendrimer backbone resulted in a hypsochromic shift compared to all‐thiophene dendrimers reported earlier by our group. All dendritic compounds are fluorescent and showed moderate quantum efficiencies due to an effective intramolecular charge‐transfer (ICT) process. Cyclic voltammetry measurements also revealed the presence of multiple π‐conjugative pathways that show very broad oxidation waves for higher generations. HOMO–LUMO energy levels of these dendrons and dendrimers were estimated from optical and redox measurements and the calculated band gaps were within the range of 3.3 to 2.4 eV, typical for oligo‐ and polythiophenes. Electrochemical polymerizations of several desilylated compounds were performed and characterization of the films is reported. Preliminary bulk heterojunction solar cells that utilise these ethynylated dendrimers as the donor and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM[60]) as the acceptor showed moderate efficiencies ranging from 0.18–0.64 %.  相似文献

The self‐assembling ability of block copolymers offers an attractive strategy for the organization of π‐conjugated polymers. This article reports the synthesis of a coil–rod–coil triblock copolymer consisting of oligo(p‐phenyleneethynylene) as the rodlike segment and polystyrene as the coil‐like segment. The chemical structure of the afforded triblock copolymer has been fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, Raman, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet–visible, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The small‐angle neutron scattering and photophysical measurements indicate that this triblock copolymer exhibits unique solvatochromatic behaviors through the interplay of aggregation‐induced π–π stacking and planarization of the conjugated backbone. Supramolecular gel nanostructures have been produced via the controlled assembly of the polymer into H‐aggregates. It has been demonstrated that the use of the solvent composition to influence chain conformations and thus to manipulate the packing of the conjugated polymer blocks is important for achieving control in the assembly of conducting polymers and associated optical characteristics. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photoluminescent energy transfer was investigated in conjugated polymer‐fluorophore blended thin films. A pentiptycene‐containing poly(phenyleneethynylene) was used as the energy donor, and 13 fluorophores were used as energy acceptors. The efficiency of energy transfer was measured by monitoring both the quenching of the polymer emission and the enhancement of the fluorophore emission. Near‐infrared emitting squaraines and terrylenes were identified as excellent energy acceptors. These results, where a new fluorescent signal occurs in the near‐infrared region on a completely dark background, offer substantial possibilities for designing highly sensitive turn‐on sensors. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Based on a donor–acceptor framework, several conjugates have been designed and prepared in which an electron‐donor moiety, ytterbium(III) porphyrinate (YbPor), was linked through an ethynyl bridge to an electron‐acceptor moiety, boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY). Photoluminescence studies demonstrated efficient energy transfer from the BODIPY moiety to the YbPor counterpart. When conjugated with the YbPor moiety, the BODIPY moiety served as an antenna to harvest the lower‐energy visible light, subsequently transferring its energy to the YbPor counterpart, and, consequently, sensitizing the YbIII emission in the near‐infrared (NIR) region with a quantum efficiency of up to 0.73 % and a lifetime of around 40 μs. Moreover, these conjugates exhibited large two‐photon‐absorption cross‐sections that ranged from 1048–2226 GM and strong two‐photon‐induced NIR emission.  相似文献

Hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) with decorated donor and acceptor chromophores in different domains were constructed to demonstrate the function of light harvesting in a polymeric nanostructure. Taking advantage of our recently developed chain‐growth copper‐catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition polymerization, two structural parameters in the HBPs, for example, the molar ratio of the acceptor Coumarin 343 in the core to the donor Coumarin 2 on the periphery, and the average distance between these two layers, could be independently varied in a one‐pot synthesis. The results demonstrated an efficient energy transfer from the excited Coumarin 2 to the ground‐state Coumarin 343 in the core, with the efficiency of the energy transfer reaching as high as 98 %. The excited Coumarin 343, after receiving energy from donor Coumarin 2 emitted higher fluorescence intensity than when directly excited, indicating an observed light concentration effect from the periphery dye to the central dye in one polymer structure.  相似文献

Through‐space charge transfer polymers (TSCT polymers) that contain a non‐conjugated polystyrene backbone and spatially separated donor and acceptor units for solution‐processed OLEDs with full‐color and white emission is reported. By tuning the charge transfer strength between donor and acceptors with different electron‐accepting ability, emission color spanning from deep blue to red can be achieved. By incorporating two kinds of donor/acceptor pairs in one polymer to create duplex through‐space charge‐transfer channels, blue and yellow emission can be simultaneously obtained to realize white electroluminescence from a single polymer. The TSCT polymers exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence effect with delayed‐component lifetimes in range of 0.36–1.98 μs, and unexpected aggregation‐induced emission (emission intensity enhancement of up to 117 from solution to aggregation state).  相似文献

Two novel anionic conjugated copolyelectrolytes PSDPPPV and PSDPPPE were synthesized via Heck/Sonogashira coupling reactions and characterized by FT‐IR, 1H NMR, UV‐vis, and PL spectroscopy. The two polymers are respectively constituted of 2,5‐diethoxy‐1,4‐phenyleneethynylene (DPV) and 2,5‐diethoxy‐1,4‐phenyleneethynylene (DPE) with 1,4‐diketo‐2,5‐bis(4‐sulfonylbutyl)‐3,6‐diphenylpyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole (SDPP) which is a novel water soluble diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative. PSDPPPV and PSDPPPE show broad absorption band in visible region and they exhibit strong fluorescence quenching in aqueous solution. The fluorescence of their aqueous solutions can be enhanced in the presence of cationic surfactant or polymer nonionic surfactant. Fluorescence enhancement by introduction of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) shows linear response. This result provides a controllable method to increase fluorescence intensity of dipyrrolopyrrole‐based conjugate polyelectrolytes in aqueous phase. The optical properties suggested that PSDPPPV and PSDPPPE which are negatively charged conjugated polymers can assemble with positively charged photovoltaic materials to form ionic photoactive layer. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New [2.2]paracyclophane‐based through‐space conjugated polymers containing fluorescence quenchers such as anthraquinone and ferrocene units at the polymer termini were designed and synthesized. Their optical properties were investigated in detail. Fluorescence emission from the stacked π‐electron systems was effectively quenched by the stacked π‐electron systems at the polymer termini due to the energy and electron transfer through a single polymer chain; thus, the polymers acted as the molecular wire. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The preparation of a series of novel homopolymers and copolymers containing bisazobenzene chromophores with side‐on structure in the side chains via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were presented. UV–vis spectra of the thin films of these polymers under irradiation of 488 nm Ar+ laser suggested that the photoisomerization of the bisazobenzene chromophores happened mainly on one of the two azo groups in the bisazobenzene chromophores with similar probability due to their side‐on structure. Good photoalignment behaviors of these polymers were proved by photoinduced birefringence measurements because side‐on structure permitted the two azo groups in the bisazobenzene chromophores both participated in the trans–cis–trans photoisomerization cycles equally to induce the whole chromophore reorientation. Furthermore, the reorientation axis located at the middle of chromophore decreased the sweep volume during photoalignment. The impetus for this study was to evaluate the photoisomerization and photoalignment process of side‐on bisazobenzene‐containing polymers and to find possible applications in the photosensitive devices. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fluorescent materials exhibiting two‐photon induction (TPI) are used for nonlinear optics, bioimaging, and phototherapy. Polymerizations of molecular chromophores to form π‐conjugated structures were hindered by the lack of long‐range ordering in the structure and strong π–π stacking between the chromophores. Reported here is the rational design of a benzothiadiazole‐based covalent organic framework (COF) for promoting TPI and obtaining efficient two‐photon induced fluorescence emissions. Characterization and spectroscopic data revealed that the enhancement in TPI performance is attributed to the donor‐π‐acceptor‐π‐donor configuration and regular intervals of the chromophores, the large π‐conjugation domain, and the long‐range order of COF crystals. The crystalline structure of TPI‐COF attenuates the π–π stacking interactions between the layers, and overcomes aggregation‐caused emission quenching of the chromophores for improving near‐infrared two‐photon induced fluorescence imaging.  相似文献

Tropone‐fused, various π‐conjugated polymers ( P2 – P5 ) were synthesized by the palladium‐catalyzed coupling reaction of 1,4‐dibromo‐6,8‐dimethyl‐7H‐benzocyclohepten‐7‐one with aromatic divinyl, diboronic acid, and diethynyl compounds. The molecular orbital calculation of the model compounds was performed to discuss effective conjugation length of the repeating unit of the polymers. The absorption spectra of phenylenevinylene‐type polymers shifted to longer wavelengths than the model compounds by about 60 nm. They exhibited green fluorescence [λmax(em) = 544 and 561 nm]. The absorption spectrum of a phenylene‐type polymer blueshifted by 10 nm; however, that of a phenyleneethynylene‐type polymer redshifted by 83 nm as compared with their model compounds. They showed fluorescence with peak maxima at 457 and 489 nm, respectively. As a result, the absorption spectra of phenylene‐ and phenylenevinylene‐type polymers blueshifted, but that of a phenyleneethynylene‐type polymer redshifted by the annulation of tropone onto a benzene ring in the conjugated polymer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined polystyrene (PSt), poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) or poly(2‐methyloxazoline) (POx) based polymers containing mid‐ or end‐chain 2,5‐ or 3,5‐dibromobenzene moieties were prepared by controlled polymerization methods, such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), ring opening polymerization (ROP), or cationic ring opening polymerization (CROP). These polymers were subsequently modified by Suzuki type coupling reactions with 2‐thiophene boronic acid. The resulting polymers, containing a conjugated sequence with 2‐thienyl groups at the extremities, could be further used as macromonomers in chemical oxidative polymerization in the presence of anhydrous FeCl3. Poly(thienyl‐phenylene)s having the respective PSt or PCL chains as lateral subtituents were obtained in this way. All the starting, intermediate, or final polymers were structurally analyzed by spectroscopic methods (1H and 13C NMR, IR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements. Thermal behavior of the macromonomers and final polymers was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. Optical properties of the polymers were monitored by UV and fluorescence spectroscopy. The emission spectra of the polymers show a clear bathochromic shift of the λmax emission in all the cases with respect to the monomers because of the extending of the conjugation length. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new coil‐rod‐coil copolymer is synthesized via Sonogashira coupling using one‐step methodology. The copolymer PEG‐OEPETPT‐PEG constitutes of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as the coil block, and oligo[p‐(ethynylenephenyleneethynylene)‐alt‐(thienylenepyridazinylenethienylene)] (OEPETPT) as the rod segment. The conjugated polymer PEPETPT with the same conjugated building blocks is also synthesized for comparison. The structures of both polymers are confirmed by NMR, combined with other characterizations. PEG‐OEPETPT‐PEG has a 12 nm blue‐shift in the emission maximum compared with that of PEPETPT, and a higher quantum yield of fluorescence in THF. PEG‐OEPETPTE‐PEG tolerates up to 20% water content in H2O/THF mixed solvent without significantly changing the emission wavelength and intensity, while the fluorescence of PEPETPT is dramatically quenched by a very small quantity of water. Further photophysical studies about these two polymers indicate that the introduction of PEG coils onto the conjugated block retards the water‐induced‐aggregation and therefore improves the fluorescence stability of PEG‐OEPETPT‐PEG. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Picosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy was used to characterize energy transfer between chromophores displayed on a rod assembly of tobacco mosaic virus coat protein. The incorporation of donor chromophores with broad and overlapping absorption and emission spectra creates an "antenna" with a large absorption cross section, which can convey excitation energy over large distances before transfer to an acceptor chromophore. The possibility for both donor-to-donor and donor-to-acceptor transfer results in complex kinetic behavior at any single wavelength. Thus, to describe the various pathways of energy transfer within this system accurately, a global lifetime analysis was performed to obtain decay associated spectra. We found the energy transfer from donor to acceptor chromophores occurs in 187 ps with an efficiency of 36%. A faster decay component of 70 ps was also observed from global lifetime analysis and is attributed to donor-to-donor transfer. Although more efficient three-chromophore systems have been demonstrated, a two-chromophore system was studied here to facilitate analysis.  相似文献

Fullerene‐based tetrads, triads, and dyads are presented in which [60]fulleropyrrolidine synthons are linked to an oligo(p‐phenyleneethynylene) antenna at the nitrogen atom and to electron‐donor phenothiazine (PTZ) and/or ferrocene (Fc) moieties at the α carbon of the pyrrolidine cycle through an acetylene spacer. Cyclic voltammetry and UV/ Vis absorption spectra evidence negligible ground‐state electronic interactions among the subunits. By contrast, strong excited‐state interactions are detected upon selective light irradiation of the antenna (UV) or of the fullerene scaffold (Vis). When only PTZ is present as electron donor, photoinduced electron transfer to the fullerene unit is unambiguously detected in benzonitrile, but this is not the case when Fc is part of the multicomponent system. These results suggest that Fc is a formidable energy transfer quencher and caution should be used in choosing it as electron donor to promote efficient charge separation in multicomponent arrays.  相似文献

In order to understand exciton migration and fluorescence intensity fluctuation mechanisms in conjugated polymer single molecules, we studied fluorescence decay dynamics at "on" and "off" fluorescence intensity levels with 20 ps time resolution using MEH-PPV [poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] dispersed in PMMA. Two types of intensity fluctuations were distinguished for single chains of conjugated polymers. Abrupt intensity fluctuations (blinking) were found to be always accompanied by corresponding changes in fluorescence lifetime. On the contrary, during "smooth" intensity fluctuations no lifetime change was observed. Time-resolved data in combination with data on fluorescence emission and excitation anisotropy lead to a picture where a single polymer molecule is seen as consisting of several energy transfer domains. Exciton migration is efficient within a domain and not efficient between domains. Each domain can have several emitting low-energy sites over which the exciton continuously migrates until it decays. Emission of individual domains is often highly polarized. Fluorescence from a domain can be strongly quenched by Forster energy transfer to a quencher (hole polaron) if the domain overlaps with the quenching sphere.  相似文献

Three sulfonato‐containing fluorene‐based anionic water‐soluble conjugated polymers, which are specially designed to link fluorene with alternating moieties such as bipyridine ( P1 ), pyridine ( P2 ), and benzene ( P3 ) have been synthesized via the Pd‐catalyzed Sonogashira‐coupling reaction, respectively. These polymers had good solubility in water and showed different responses for transition metal ions with different valence in aqueous environments: the fluorescence of bipyridine‐containing P1 can be completely quenched by addition of all transition metal ions selected and showed a good selectivity for Ni2+; the pyridine‐containing P2 had a little response for monovalent and divalent metal ions while showed good quenching with the addition of trivalent metal ions (with a special selectivity for Fe3+); P3 had responses only for the trivalent metal ions within the ionic concentration we studied. After investigation of the UV‐vis absorption spectra, PL emission spectra, DLS, and fluorescence lifetime of P1 – P3 in aqueous solution when adding transition metal ions, we found that the different spectrum responses of these polymers are attributed to the different coordination ability of the units linked with fluorene in the main chain. The energy or electron‐transfer reactions were the main reason for fluorescence quenching of P1 and P2 . On the other hand, interchain aggregation caused by trivalent metal ions lead to fluorescence quenching for P3 and also caused partly fluorescence quenching of P1 and P2 . These results revealed the origin of ionochromic effects of these polymers and suggested the potential application for these polymers as novel chemosensors with higher sensing sensitivity in aqueous environments. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

The behavior of benzyl bromide functionalized poly(phenyleneethynylene)s as macroinitiators in the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated. The 1H NMR observation of the ATRP using the exclusively para‐linked poly(phenyleneethynylene) macroinitiator PPE1A, and the low molecular weight initiator R‐BzBr, respectively, revealed lower reactivity for the macroinitiator. Comparison of graft copolymers, which were obtained from ATRP of MMA with PPE1A and the partially meta‐linked poly(phenyleneethynylene) PPE1B, showed higher reactivity in the case of PPE1B, expressed by a larger degree of polymerization in the PMMA side chains, as well as higher initiatior efficiency. This might be caused by better solubility of the less symmetric PPE1B. Investigation of the graft copolymers PPE2A and PPE2B was carried out by means of 1H NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as well as UV/vis spectroscopy. Impairment of the delocalized π‐electron system of the conjugated polymers during the ATRP was not detectable.  相似文献
