Cis-transoidal poly((4-carboxyphenyl)acetylene) (poly-1) is an optically inactive polymer but forms an induced one-handed helical structure upon complexation with optically active amines such as (R)-(1-(1-naphthyl)ethyl)amine ((R)-2) in DMSO. The complexes show a characteristic induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the UV-visible region of the polymer backbone. Moreover, the macromolecular helicity of poly-1 induced by (R)-2 can be "memorized" even after complete replacement of (R)-2 by various achiral amines. We now report fully detailed studies on the mechanism of the helicity induction and memory of the helical chirality of poly-1 by means of UV-visible, CD, and infrared spectroscopies. We have found that a one-handed helix is cooperatively induced on poly-1 upon the ion pair formation of the carboxy groups of poly-1 with optically active amines and that the bulkiness of the chiral amines plays a crucial role for inducing an excess of a single-handed helix. On the other hand, the free ion formation was found to be essential for the macromolecular helicity memory of poly-1 after the replacement of the chiral amine by achiral amines, since the intramolecular electrostatic repulsion between the neighboring carboxylate ions of poly-1 significantly contributes to reduce the atropisomerization process of poly-1. On the basis of the mechanism of helicity induction and the memory of the helical chirality drawn from the present studies, we succeeded in creating an almost perfect memory of the induced macromolecular helicity of poly-1 with (R)-2 by using 2-aminoethanol as an achiral chaperoning molecule to assist in maintaining the memory of helical chirality.  相似文献

Unique macromolecular helicity inversion of stereoregular, optically active poly(phenylacetylene) derivatives induced by external achiral and chiral stimuli is briefly reviewed. Stereoregular, cis-transoidal poly(phenylacetylene)s bearing an optically active substituent, such as (1R,2S)-norephedrine (poly- 1 ) and β-cyclodextrin residues (poly- 2 ), show an induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the UV-visible region of the polymer backbone in solution due to a predominantly one-handed helical conformation of the polymers. However, poly- 1 undergoes a helix-helix transition upon complexation with chiral acids having an R configuration, and the complexes exhibit a dramatic change in the ICD of poly- 1 . Poly- 2 also shows the inversion of macromolecular helicity responding to molecular and chiral recognition events that occurred at the remote cyclodextrin residues from the polymer backbone; the helicity inversion is accompanied by a visible color change. A similar helix-helix transition of poly((R)- or (S)-(4-((1-(1-naphthyl)ethyl)carbamoyl)phenyl)acetylene) is also briefly described.  相似文献

Chiral polythiophenes (PTs), in sharp contrast to other optically active polymers, exhibit optical activity in the pi-pi* transition region which is derived from the chirality of the main chain when they self-assemble to form a supramolecular pi-stacked aggregate with intermolecular interactions in a poor solvent or in a film. We now report that the regioregular, optically active PT poly[(R)-3-[4-(4-ethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)phenyl]thiophene] (poly-1) exhibits unique split-type induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the pi-pi* transition region of the main chain upon complexation with various metal salts such as trifluoromethanesulfonates of copper(I), copper(II), silver(I), and zinc(II), and iron(II) perchlorate in chloroform, which is a good solvent for poly-1. The appearance of ICD and slight changes in the UV/Vis spectra (no color change), except for the zinc salts, indicated that the chirality may not be induced by chiral pi-stacked aggregates of poly-1, but by the chirality of the main chain, for example, a predominantly one-handed helical structure induced by intermolecular coordination of the oxazoline groups to metal ions. The sign of the Cotton effect depends on the metal salt; most metal salts induced ICDs with similar Cotton-effect patterns, while zinc salts caused an inversion of the signs of the Cotton effect of poly-1 accompanied by a gradual red shift in the absorption of up to 125 nm. The changes in the conformation and the size of the poly-1 aggregates induced by different metal salts were also investigated by (1)H NMR titrations, static light scattering (SLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and membrane filtration. On the basis of these results, we propose a possible model for the chiral supramolecular aggregates of poly-1 with metal salts.  相似文献

Optically active polyisocyanides (poly(iminomethylenes)) have been prepared with much interest in developing new functional materials. Polyisocyanides have been considered to have a stable 4(1) helical conformation even in solution when they have a bulky side group. However, the conformational characteristics of poly(phenyl isocyanide) (PPI) derivatives are still under debate. We now report that an optically inactive PPI derivative, poly(4-carboxyphenyl isocyanide) (poly-1), shows optical activity in the polymer backbone induced by external, chiral stimuli through acid-base interactions under thermodynamic control and exhibits induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the UV-visible region in DMSO. The ICD intensities of the poly-1-chiral amine complexes in DMSO gradually increased with time, and, in one case, the value reached 3 times that of the original value after 2 months at 30 degrees C. The conformational changes also occurred very slowly for poly-1 alone and its ethyl ester with time on the basis of (1)H NMR spectroscopic analysis. These results indicate that PPIs bearing a less bulky substituent may not have a 4(1) helical conformation but have a different type of prochiral conformation, for instance, an s-trans (zigzag) structure which may transform to a dynamic, one-handed helical conformation when the PPIs have a functional group capable of interacting with chiral compounds. The mechanism of helicity induction on poly-1 through a dynamic conformational transition is discussed on the basis of the above results together with molecular dynamic simulation results for PPI.  相似文献

A stereoregular poly(phenylacetylene) bearing an N,N‐diisopropylaminomethyl group as the pendant (poly‐ 1 ) changed its structure into the prevailing one‐handed helical conformation upon complexation with optically active acids in water. The complexes exhibited induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the UV/Vis region of the polymer backbone. Poly‐ 1 is highly sensitive to the chirality of chiral acids and can detect a small enantiomeric imbalance in these acids, in particular, phenyl lactic acid in water. For example, a 0.005 % enantiomeric excess of phenyl lactic acid can be detected by CD spectroscopy. The observed ICD intensity and pattern of poly‐ 1 were dependent on the temperature and concentration of poly‐ 1 , probably due to aggregations of the polymer at high temperature as revealed by dynamic light scattering and AFM. On the basis of the temperature‐dependent ICD changes, the preferred chiral helical sense of poly‐ 1 was found to be controlled by noncovalent bonding interactions by using structurally different enantiomeric acids.  相似文献

A poly(phenylacetylene) bearing a phosphonic acid monoethyl ester as the pendant forms a one-handed helical structure induced by an optically active amine, and this helicity can be "memorized"after the amine is replaced by achiral diamines. The helicity memory lasts for an extremely long time but spontaneously disappears after the achiral diamines are removed by a stronger acid, indicating the dynamic nature of the helicity memory. Here we report that such a dynamic memory could be "stored" after the pendant was converted to its methyl ester with diazomethane, resulting in the generation of a phosphorus stereogenic center with optical activity. The esterification enantioselectively proceeded through chirality transfer from the induced helical conformation or the helicity memory of the polyacetylene backbone. Although the enantioselectivity was low, the pendant chirality was significantly amplified in the polymer backbone at low temperatures, resulting in higher optical activity as an excess single-handed helix than that expected from the enantiomeric excess of the pendants.  相似文献

We have designed a novel stereoregular poly(phenylacetylene) bearing the bulky crown ether as the pendant (poly-1) for the amino acid binding site. The polymer forms a one-handed helix upon complexation with l-amino acid perchlorates, and the complexes exhibit an induced circular dichroism (ICD) with the same Cotton effect signs in the polymer backbone region through a significant cooperative interaction. Poly-1 is highly sensitive to the amino acid chirality and can detect an extremely small enantiomeric imbalance in alpha-amino acids (less than 0.005% enantiomeric excess of alanine, for example).  相似文献

Here we show the first example of a helical polyacetylene that forms a lyotropic liquid crystal (LC) through a hierarchical amplification of a macromolecular helicity process in water. The macromolecular helicity with an excess of one helical sense was first induced in the positively charged polyacetylene upon complexation with an extremely small oppositely charged nonracemic dopant through electrostatic interaction in water. Subsequently, the helicity was significantly amplified in the polymer backbone as an almost perfect single-handed helix through self-assembly into supramolecular helical arrays in a lyotropic cholesteric state. The present results will allow the detection of a tiny imbalance in chiral molecules and also provide new approaches for the design of novel water-soluble helical architectures and the construction of new chiral materials in areas such as biotechnology and materials science.  相似文献

A novel, cistransoidal poly‐(phenylacetylene) bearing a carboxybiphenyl group as the pendant (poly‐ 1 ) was prepared by polymerization of (4′‐ethoxycarbonyl‐4‐biphenylyl)acetylene with a rhodium catalyst followed by hydrolysis of the ester groups. Upon complexation with various chiral amines and amino alcohols in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), the polymer exhibited characteristic induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the UV/Vis region due to the predominantly one‐handed helix formation of the polymer backbone as well as an excess of a single‐handed, axially twisted conformation of the pendant biphenyl group. Poly‐ 1 complexed with (R)‐2‐amino‐1‐propanol showed unique time‐dependent inversion of the macromolecular helicity. Furthermore, the preferred‐handed helical conformation of poly‐ 1 induced by a chiral amine was further “memorized” after the chiral amine was replaced with achiral 2‐aminoethanol or n‐butylamine in DMSO. In sharp contrast to the previously reported memory in poly((4‐carboxyphenyl)acetylene), the present helicity memory of poly‐ 1 was accompanied by memory of the twisted biphenyl chirality in the pendants. Unprecedentedly, the helicity memory of poly‐ 1 with achiral 2‐aminoethanol was found to occur simultaneously with inversion of the axial chirality of the biphenyl groups followed by memory of the inverted biphenyl chirality, thus showing a significant change in the CD spectral pattern.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of the helical conformations for the homopolymers of phenylacetylene derivatives bearing an optically active substituent, such as the (R)-((1-phenylethyl)carbamoyl)oxy and (R)-((1-(1-naphthyl)ethyl)carbamoyl)oxy groups at the phenyl group, and their copolymers with achiral phenylacetylenes were investigated in solution using circular dichroism (CD) and absorption spectroscopies. The magnitude of the induced CD (ICD) of the optically active homopolymers increased with decreasing temperature and was accompanied by a blueshift in their absorption maxima. On the other hand, the copolymers with achiral phenylacetylenes exhibited interesting ICD changes with temperature, depending on the bulkiness of the achiral comonomers. The copolymers with a less bulky phenylacetylene had a very intense ICD at low temperatures, the ICD pattern was almost opposite to those of the chiral homopolymers, while the copolymers with the most bulky phenylacetylene bearing a tert-butyldiphenylsiloxy group at the para position showed an ICD change similar to that of the optically active homopolymers. However, the copolymers with the phenylacetylene bearing a tert-butyldimethylsiloxy group with intermediate bulkiness at the para position showed no ICD change with temperature. These results indicate that the prevailing helix-sense of the chiral-achiral random copolymers of the phenylacetylenes is determined by a delicate interaction between the chiral and achiral side chains. The thermodynamic stability parameters for the helical conformations of the homopolymers and copolymers of the phenylacetylenes were estimated from the temperature dependence of the ICDs.  相似文献

N-Propargylbenzamides 1-7 were polymerized with (nbd)Rh(+)[eta(6)-C(6)H(5)B(-)(C(6)H(5))(3)] to afford polymers with moderate molecular weights (M(n) = 26,000-51,000) in good yields. The (1)H NMR spectra demonstrated that the polymers have fairly stereoregular structures (81-88 % cis). The optically active polymers, poly(1) and poly(2), were proven by their intense CD signals and large optical rotations to adopt a stable helical conformation with an excess of one-handed screw sense when heated in CHCl(3) or toluene. The sign of Cotton effect could be controlled by varying the content in the copolymers of either chiral bulky 1 and achiral nonbulky 3, or chiral nonbulky 2 and achiral bulky 7. The smaller the pendant group in the copolymerization of achiral monomers with 1, the more easily did the preferential helical sense change with the copolymer composition. However, the copolymers of chiral nonbulky 2 and achiral nonbulky 3 did not change the helical sense, irrespective of the composition. The free energy differences between the plus and minus helical states, as well as the excess free energy of the helix reversal, of those chiral-achiral random copolymers were estimated by applying a modified Ising model.  相似文献

Structural and retrostructural analysis of helical dendronized polyacetylenes (i.e., self-organizable polyacetylenes containing first generation dendrons or minidendrons as side groups) synthesized by the polymerization of minidendritic acetylenes with [Rh(nbd)Cl]2 (nbd = 2,5-norbornadiene) reveals an approximately 10% change in the average column stratum thickness (l) of the cylindrical macromolecules with a chiral periphery, through which a strong preference for a single-handed screw-sense is communicated. The cylindrical macromolecules reversibly interconvert between a three-dimensional (3D) centered rectangular lattice (Phi r-c,k) exhibiting long-range intracolumnar helical order at lower temperatures and a two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal columnar lattice (Phi h) with short-range helical order at higher temperatures. A polymer containing chiral, nonracemic peripheral alkyl tails is found to have a larger l as compared to the achiral polymers. In methyl cyclohexane solution, the same polymer exhibits an intense signal in circular dichroism (CD) spectra, whose intensity decreases upon heating. The observed change in l indicates that the chiral tails alter the polymer conformation from that of the corresponding polymer with achiral side chains. This change in conformation results in a relatively large free energy difference (DeltaGh) favoring one helix-sense over the other (per monomer residue). The capacity to distort the polymer conformation and corresponding free energy is related to the population of branches in the chiral tails and their distance from the polymer backbone by comparison to recently reported first and second generation dendronized polyphenylacetylenes.  相似文献

A stereoregular poly(phenylacetylene) bearing the bulky aza‐18‐crown‐6 ether as the pendant (poly‐ 1 ) formed a predominantly one‐handed helical conformation upon complexation with various chiral compounds, such as amino acids, peptides, aminosugars, amines, and amino alcohols in water. The complexes exhibited an induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the UV–visible region of the polymer main chain. Therefore, poly‐ 1 can be used as a novel probe for determining the chirality of chiral compounds in water. The assay of 19 common free L ‐amino acids gave the same ICD sign at 0 °C except for L ‐phenylalanine. The effects of pH, temperature, guest concentration, and organic solvent content on the ICD during the complexation of poly‐ 1 with chiral compounds were also investigated. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The helix-sense selective polymerization of achiral monomers by homochiral catalysts was investigated. Polymerization of chiral carbodiimides (N-(R)-2,6-(dimethylheptyl)-N'-phenylcarbodiimide) by achiral catalysts yields polymers that undergo mutorotation at elevated temperatures, thus illustrating that these chains are formed under kinetic rather than thermodynamic control. Building on this observation, the polymerization of achiral carbodiimides by (S-BINOL)Ti(OiPr)2, I, was studied. Monomers (N-hexyl-N'-(X)carbodiimide, where X = isopropyl (3), hexyl (4) or phenyl (5)), N-methyl-N'-(2-methyl-6-isopropylphenyl)carbodiimide, 6, and N-dodecyl-N'-(1-naphthyl)carbodiimide, 7, were all polymerized with I in good yields (86-95%), and all showed varying degrees of asymmetric induction. Poly-3, -4, and -5 racemized upon heating at elevated temperatures, but poly-6 and poly-7, bearing nonsymmetric phenyl groups, yielded optically active polymers that could not be racemized even at elevated temperatures. Thin films of poly-7 were found to be highly opalescent.  相似文献

A novel optically active polymer consisting of riboflavin units as the main chain (poly-1) was prepared from naturally occurring riboflavin (vitamin B(2)) in three steps. The riboflavin residues of poly-1 were converted to 5-ethylriboflavinium cations (giving poly-2), which could be reversibly transformed into the corresponding 4a-hydroxyriboflavins (giving poly-2OH) through hydroxylation/dehydroxylation reactions. This reversible structural change was accompanied by a visible color change along with significant changes in the absorption and circular dichroism (CD) spectra. The nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY) and CD spectra of poly-2 revealed a supramolecularly twisted helical structure with excess one-handedness through face-to-face stacking of the intermolecular riboflavinium units, as evidenced by the apparent NOE correlations between the interstrand riboflavin units and intense Cotton effects induced in the flavinium chromophore regions. The hydroxylation of poly-2 at the 4a-position proceeded in a diastereoselective fashion via chirality transfer from the induced supramolecular helical chirality assisted by the ribityl pendants, resulting in a 83:17 diastereomeric mixture of poly-2OH. The diastereoselectivity of poly-2 was remarkably higher than that of the corresponding monomeric model (64.5:35.5), indicating amplification of the chirality resulting from the supramolecular chirality induced in the stacked poly-2 backbones. The optically active poly-2 efficiently catalyzed the asymmetric organocatalytic oxidation of sulfides with hydrogen peroxide, yielding optically active sulfoxides with up to 60% enantiomeric excess (ee), whose enantioselectivity was higher than that catalyzed by the monomeric counterpart (30% ee). In addition, upon exposure to primary and secondary amines, poly-2 exhibited unique high-speed vapochromic behavior arising from the formation of 4a-amine adducts in the film.  相似文献

Diacetylene monomers with respective lengths of the oxyethylene chains were cyclopolymerized with a rhodium catalyst to produce novel poly(phenylacetylene)s bearing a different cavity size of the chiral crown ether in the repeating units ( 2a – c ). In the circular dichroism spectra of the resulting polymers, characteristic Cotton effects were observed in the range from 350 to 500 nm corresponding to the absorption of the conjugated polymer backbone, indicating that the polymers possessed a helical structure with an excess single screw sense induced by the covalently bonded binaphthyl units. The host–guest complexation of 2a – c with achiral guests produced a chiroptical change based on the fluctuation in the main chain conformation. The behavior of the complexation‐induced chiroptical change was essentially dictated by the cavity size of the binaphthocrown ether units. Additionally, a chirality‐responsive helicity change was observed in the case of the complexation of 2a – c with chiral guests, which also depended on the crown ether size. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Enantiopure alleno‐acetylenic ligands assemble diastereoselectively upon the addition of a zinc(II) salt to form triple‐stranded helicates, which provide a sufficiently large helical cage (“helicage”) for the encapsulation of guests. The inclusion complexation of heteroalicycles is confirmed by ROESY and DOSY NMR spectroscopy and quantified in 1H NMR binding titrations. The ECD spectra of the helicates, which showed strong Cotton effects and exciton coupling, were found to be extremely sensitive to the nature of the guest molecules. Consequently, a series of nonchromophoric, achiral guests of different sizes as well as regioisomers (1,3‐ and 1,4‐dioxane) became distinguishable on the basis of their induced CD (ICD) spectra. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations show the adaptability of the cavity size to individual guest molecules and support the selective ICD output. Particularly high affinity towards 1,4‐dioxane allowed its selective detection at parts‐per‐million (ppm) levels in aqueous solutions.  相似文献

A chiral regioregular polythiophene (PT), poly[3-[4-((R)-4-ethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)phenyl]thiophene] (poly-1), forms chiral aggregates which exhibit a unique induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the pi-pi transition region derived from the supramolecular chirality in the presence of various poor solvents or metal salts in chloroform. We report here that the chirality of such supramolecular aggregates can be switched ("on" and "off") through electron transfer. We have found that upon the addition of copper(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate [Cu(OTf)(2)] to the chiral aggregates of poly-1 in a chloroform-acetonitrile mixture, the ICD disappears because of the oxidative doping of the poly-1 main chain, while a further addition of amines such as triethylenetetramine (TETA) induces undoping of the poly-1 which results in the reappearance of the ICDs. Therefore, the supramolecular chirality of the poly-1 assemblies was reversibly controlled by the addition or removal of an electron from the poly-1 main chain. This may be the first example of a reversible supramolecular chirality switch on chiral PT aggregates. We investigated the mechanism of the chirality switch through the doping and undoping process on the polymer main chain by means of absorption and CD spectroscopies, ESR, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction, and AFM measurements.  相似文献

The repeating guest units of poly-(R)- 2 were selectively encapsulated by the self-assembled capsule poly- 1 possessing eight polymer side chains to form the supramolecular graft polymer (poly- 1 )n⋅poly-(R)- 2 . The encapsulation of the guest units was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and the DOSY technique. The hydrodynamic radius of the graft polymer structure was greatly increased upon the complexation of poly- 1 . The supramolecular graft polymer (poly- 1 )n⋅poly-(R)- 2 was stably formed in the 1:1 host–guest ratio, which increased the glass transition temperature by more than 10 °C compared to that of poly- 1 . AFM visualized that (poly- 1 )n⋅poly-(R)- 2 formed the networked structure on mica. The (poly- 1 )n⋅poly-(R)- 2 gelled in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, which led to fabrication of distinct viscoelastic materials that demonstrated self-healing behavior in a tensile test.  相似文献
