DC conductivity of conjugated polymer‐single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) composite films has been measured for different SWNT concentrations. The composite was prepared by dispersing SWNTs in the poly (3‐octylthiophene), P3OT matrix already dissolved in xylene. The conductivity of the composite films showed a rapid increase as the SWNT concentration increases beyond a certain value. This behavior is explained in terms of percolating paths provided by the SWNTs in the volume of polymer matrix. To investigate the effect of length of nanotubes on the percolation conductivity, different SWNT samples were employed with similar diameter but varying tube lengths. It was found that the conductivity of the composite films is strongly dominated by the length of the nanotubes. Lower percolation limit and high conductivity value of composite films is observed for longer nanotubes. Furthermore, the conductivity is observed to be dependent on the size of the host polymer molecule also. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 89–95, 2010  相似文献

A coagulation method providing a better dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in a polymer matrix was used to produce SWNT/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed an improved dispersion of SWNTs in the PMMA matrix, a key factor in composite performance. Aligned and unaligned composites were made with purified SWNTs with different SWNT loadings (0.1–7 wt %). Comprehensive testing showed improved elastic modulus, electrical conductivity, and thermal stability with the addition of SWNTs. The electrical conductivity of a 2 wt % SWNT composite decreased significantly (>105) when the SWNTs were aligned, and this result was examined in terms of percolation. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Supramolecular complexes of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with poly(9,9-didodecylfluorene-2,7-diyl) (PF) derivatives were prepared using a solution dispersion process. A series of novel conjugated PF polymers with carboxyl or hydroxyl end groups at both ends were synthesized by the Yamamoto-type coupling of 2,7-dibromo-9,9-didodecylfluorene using Ni(COD)2 as a catalyst, and further end-capped with either 4-bromobenzoic acid or 4-bromobenzyl alcohol to obtain the end-functionalized PF with different terminal groups. An α-monocarboxy-ω-mono-methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) was connected to both ends of the PF-containing hydroxyl end groups to produce triblock copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-polyfluorene-b-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEO-b-PF-b-PEO). These SWNTs were completely wrapped with the conjugated polymers through π–π interactions, which enhanced the solubility of the SWNT complexes in organic media, and prevented the aggregation of the polymer–SWNT complexes into large bundles. This indicates that the dispersion stability of SWNTs is enhanced by the addition of the conjugated polymers.  相似文献

Catalyst formation kinetics of a ferrocene‐containing homopolymer, polyferrocenylethylmethylsilane (PFEMS), is investigated as it relates to the catalysis of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) through a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The formation and efficiency of the PFEMS‐based iron catalyst is compared with that of the corresponding polystyrene (PS)‐b‐PFEMS diblock copolymer. The PFEMS homopolymer contains 23 wt % iron, while PS‐b‐PFEMS, with a 25 vol % PFEMS content, is only 6% iron. Despite its lower iron content, spin‐cast PS‐b‐PFEMS films on SiO2/Si substrates produce more active iron sites than spin‐cast PFEMS films during CVD growth of SWNTs. This is related to the self‐assembly of the block copolymer, where PFEMS domains are well dispersed in the PS matrix, which degrades at a CVD temperature of 920 °C to leave catalytically active elemental iron behind. On the contrary, the pure PFEMS films contain a high percentage of iron and silicon, which tend to transform into ceramic‐coated iron at this high temperature, thus rendering the iron inactive towards SWNT growth. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) possess extraordinary properties, but suffer from poor solubility and a lack of purity. Of the possible routes available to solubilize and purify nanotube samples, the use of noncovalent functionalization is ideal as carbon nanotube properties are not deleteriously affected. A multitude of different dispersants have been investigated thus far, but of particular interest is deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which has previously been demonstrated to effectively separate metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes. Here, we investigate the ability of synthetic nucleobase‐containing poly(acrylamide) polymers to produce stable nanotube dispersions in organic solvents. Polymers bearing different nucleobase and backbone structures, as well as block copolymers with different block sequences were investigated. Polymer:SWNT mass ratios and solvent compositions were optimized for the nucleobase‐functionalized polymers, and semiconducting and metallic SWNT populations were identified by a combination of UV‐Vis‐NIR absorption, Raman, and fluorescence spectroscopy. These results demonstrate the capacity for synthetic DNA analogues to disperse SWNTs in organic media. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Noncovalent functionalization of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with conjugated polymers enhances SWNT processability and allows for selective dispersion of various SWNT species. Selective dispersions can be obtained by tuning the nature of the polymer, which can involve using various polymer backbones or side‐chains. However, a clear understanding of selectivity determinants is elusive, as the degree of polymerization (DP) has a large effect on SWNT selectivity. Additionally, preparing libraries of conjugated polymers with varying functionality while keeping DP consistent is difficult. Here, we report the utilization of a strained cyclooctyne‐containing conjugated polymer that serves as a versatile scaffold, enabling systematic preparation of a small library of conjugated polymers with different side‐chain functionality, while maintaining a consistent DP. The resulting polymers were used as dispersants for SWNTs, forming supramolecular polymer‐SWNT complexes that were characterized by UV‐Vis‐NIR absorption and Raman spectroscopy. In the series of polymers, we were able to probe the effect of small changes within the side chains, such as the incorporation of a carbonyl group or an aromatic unit, on the quality of the polymer‐SWNT dispersion. The results of these studies provide new insight into the factors that dictate the ability of a polymer to form strong interactions with SWNTs. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Crystallization of oligomers was applied for the preparation of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)/poly(p‐oxybenzoyl) (POB) crystals using SWNTs as a nucleating agent. Polymerization conditions were investigated to induce the crystallization of POB oligomers through SWNTs. SWNTs/POB plate‐like or lozenge‐shaped crystals were successfully prepared by direct polymerization of p‐hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) in a mixed solvent of DMF/Py with TsCl in the presence of functionalized SWNTs. The size of the plate‐like crystals were ~200 nm to 3 μm. The crystals consisted of some layers, ~3 nm thick plates. Model reactions showed that esterification reactions proceed between functionalized SWNTs and HBA monomers in the polymerization system. The obtained crystals exhibited unique morphology and high crystallinity, producing a novel SWNT/POB hybrid. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Uniform dispersion and strong interfacial interaction are two critical prerequisites for application of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in polymer composites. To endow the composites with multifunctional feature, no damage on the chemical/electronic structure of SWNTs is also usually required. With these ends in view, two epoxide‐containing pyrene derivatives (EpPys) were designed, synthesized, and used as reactive noncovalent dispersants for developing multifunctional epoxy/SWNT composites. One having longer chain length between epoxide group and pyrene moiety, that is, EpPy‐16, shows higher dispersing efficiency and provides the nanotube dispersion with better stability, thus picking up for subsequent studies. Systematic characterization on SWNT/EpPy‐16 hybrid demonstrates that 13.2 wt % of EpPy‐16 is adsorbed on the SWNT surface through strong π‐stacking interaction, and intrinsic electronic structure of SWNTs is basically reserved. The solution‐based process adopted here preserves the good SWNT dispersing state in dispersion into the composites. Simultaneously, enhanced interfacial interaction is also realized by using EpPy‐16, which interacts noncovalently with SWNT but connects covalently to epoxy network. As a result, the composites acquire 37 and 22% increments in tensile strength and Young's modulus, respectively, relative to that of neat resin. A low‐electrical percolation threshold of 0.1 wt % SWNTs and improved thermal properties were also observed. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

In spite of their useful electronic and mechanical properties, the utility of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is limited by their inherent insolubility in aqueous environments and the difficulty in functionalizing the material while retaining opto-electric properties. In this article, the synthesis of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) copolymers for wrapping SWNTs is described. Studies include the effect of polymer composition and charge on SWNT stability in aqueous solution and the variation of the stability of wrapped SWNTs during high-dilution conditions using dialysis studies. Finally, the PVP-copolymer strategy is used to create polymer wrappers with functional handles for the incorporation of useful chemical functionality. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Grafting of aldehyde structures to single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been carried out to endow the nanotubes with appropriate wettability. The results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolin‐visible‐near infrared (UV‐VIS‐NIR) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy provide the supporting evidence of aldehyde structures covalently attached to SWNTs. The improved wettability of aldehyde‐functionalized SWNTs (f‐SWNTs) was demonstrated by their good dispersion in organic medium, namely, ethanol and phenolic resin. The prospective covalent bonding between aldehyde structures on the surfaces of f‐SWNTs and phenolic resin makes it possible to prepare an integrated composite with the enhanced‐interfacial adhesion. The f‐SWNT composites, therefore, show much higher average values of dσ/dWCNT and dE/dWCNT (i.e., tensile strength and Young's modulus per unit weight fraction) compared with the composites filled with pristine SWNTs or MWNTs. The respective maxima are 9680 MPa and 320 GPa. It is thus feasible for f‐SWNTs to prepare the moderately enhanced but lightweight phenolic composites. Furthermore, the incorporation of f‐SWNTs does not limit the application of phenolic resin as insulation material. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phase separation of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends was used as a means to segregate PS‐ or PMMA‐functionalized single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in thin films. Dilute solutions (5 wt % in THF) of 1:1 PS/PMMA blends containing the functionalized nanotubes were spin cast and annealed at 180 °C for 12 h. Two different polymer molecular weights were used (Mn = 8000 or Mn = 22,000), and were of approximately equivalent molecular weight to those attached to the surface of the nanotubes. Nanotube functionalization was accomplished using the Cu(I)‐catalyzed [3 + 2] Huisgen cycloaddition, in which alkyne‐decorated nanotubes were coupled with azide‐terminated polymers, resulting in polymer‐SWNT conjugates that were soluble in THF. Characterization of the annealed films by scanning Raman spectroscopy, which utilized the unique Raman fingerprint of carbon nanotubes, enabled accurate mapping of the functionalized SWNTs within the films relative to the two phase‐separated polymers. It was found that nanotube localization within the phase‐separated polymer films was influenced by the type of polymer attached to the nanotube surface, as well as its molecular weight. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Conducting polythiophene (PTh)/single‐wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) composites were synthesized by the in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method. The resulting cablelike morphology of the composite (SWNT–PTh) structures was characterized with elemental analysis, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X‐ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The standard four‐point‐probe method was used to measure the conductivity of the samples. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that the SWNT–PTh composites were core (SWNTs) and shell (PTh) hybrid structures. Spectroscopic analysis data for the composites were almost identical to those for PTh, supporting the idea that SWNTs served as templates in the formation of a coaxial nanostructure for the composites. The physical properties of the composites were measured and also showed that the SWNTs were modified by conducting PTh with an enhancement of various properties. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single-wall carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) modified gold electrodes were prepared by using two different methods. The electrochemical behavior of cytochrome c on the modified gold electrodes was investigated. The first kind of SWNT-modified electrode (noted as SWNT/Au electrode)was prepared by the adsorption of carboxylterminated SWNTs from DMF dispersion on the gold electrode. The oxidatively processed SWNT tips were covalently modified by coupling with amines (AET) to form amide linkage.Via Au-S chemical bonding, the self-assembled monolayer of thiol-unctionalized nanotubes on gold surface was fabricated so as to prepare the others SWNT-modified electrode (noted as SWNT/AET/Au electrode). It was shown from cyclic voltammetry cxperiments that cytochrome c exhibited direct electrochemical responses on the both electrodes, but only the current of controlled diffusion existed on the SWNT/Au electrode while both the currents of controlled diffusion and adsorption of cytochrome c occurred on the SWNT/AET/Au electrode.Photoelastic Modulation Infared Reflection Absorpthion Spectroscopy (PEM-IRRAS) and Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) were employed to verify the adsorption of SWNTs on the gold electrodes. The results proved that SWNTs could enhance the direct electron transfer proecss between the electrodes and redox proteins.  相似文献

Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) synthesized with different methods are investigated by using multiple characterization techniques, including Raman scattering, optical absorption, and X‐ray absorption near edge structure, along with X‐ray photoemission by following the total valence bands and C 1s core‐level spectra. Four different SWNT materials (produced by arc discharge, HiPco, laser ablation, and CoMoCat methods) contain nanotubes with diameters ranging from 0.7 to 2.8 nm. The diameter distribution and the composition of metallic and semiconducting tubes of the SWNT materials are strongly affected by the synthesis method. Similar sp2 hybridization of carbon in the oxygenated SWNT structure can be found, but different surface functionalities are introduced while the tubes are processed. All the SWNTs demonstrate stronger plasmon resonance excitations and lower electron binding energy than graphite and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. These SWNT materials also exhibit different valence‐band X‐ray photoemission features, which are considerably affected by the nanotube diameter distribution and metallic/semiconducting composition.  相似文献

Poly(3‐hexylthiophene)/single‐walled carbon nanotube (P3HT/SWNT) materials are synthesized using an insitu Grignard metathesis approach. The structural properties and photophysics of the materials are studied using a multitude of techniques, including 1H NMR, FTIR, UV–vis absorption, Raman, photoluminescence (PL), and transient absorption spectroscopies. P3HT/SWNT composites with high P3HT regioregularity (rr > 96%) are observed. Raman spectroscopic data on the solid samples reveals an increase in the dispersion rate parameter with increasing SWNT concentration, thereby indicating close overlap and strong interactions between P3HT and the carbon nanotubes. Changes in the solution‐phase PL quantum yields and excited‐state lifetimes relative to pure P3HT support these conclusions, and indicate that strong interactions persist even after the composites are dispersed in organic solvents. The high regioregularity and enhanced P3HT–SWNT interactions are promising attributes for improving the morphology and efficiency of functional P3HT/SWNT materials. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) that are covalently functionalized with benzoic acid (SWNT‐PhCOOH) can be integrated with transition‐metal ions to form 3D porous inorganic–organic hybrid frameworks (SWNT‐Zn). In particular, N2‐adsorption analysis shows that the BET surface area increases notably from 645.3 to 1209.9 m2 g?1 for SWNTs and SWNT‐Zn, respectively. This remarkable enhancement in the surface area of SWNT‐Zn is presumably due to the microporous motifs from benzoates coordinated to intercalated zinc ions between the functionalized SWNTs; this assignment was also corroborated by NLDFT pore‐size distributions. In addition, the excess‐H2‐uptake maximum of SWNT‐Zn reaches about 3.1 wt. % (12 bar, 77 K), which is almost three times that of the original SWNTs (1.2 wt. % at 12 bar, 77 K). Owing to its inherent conductivity and pore structure, as well as good dispersibility, SWNT‐Zn is an effective candidate as a sensitive electrochemical stripping voltammetric sensor for organophosphate pesticides (OPs): By using solid‐phase extraction (SPE) with SWNT‐Zn‐modified glassy carbon electrode, the detection limit of methyl parathion (MP) is 2.3 ng mL?1.  相似文献

Electrospinning of fibers composed of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT), fullerene derivative, phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), and single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is reported. While of great promise for photovoltaic applications, morphological control of functional structures is a great challenge for most processing methods. It is demonstrated that the use of a tailor‐made block‐copolymer for dispersion of individual SWNT enables the preparation of stable dispersions of individual tubes that may be further cospun from chloroform solutions with PCBM and P3HT into submicron fibers. The block copolymer used to mediate the colloidal and interfacial interactions in the combined system enables the spinning of centimeters long and uniform fibers. Structural characterization indicates a high degree of ordering and alignment within the fibers and absorption and quenching of the photoluminescence indicate significant interactions among the components. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The in situ polymerization functionalization of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) with polystyrene (PS) is demonstrated utilizing stabilized nanotubes reduced by dissolution of excess lithium in ammonia. Short PS chains are tethered to SWNT sidewalls to facilitate a robust compatibilization strategy for nanotube dispersion. To augment extents of functionalization, while maintaining in situ dispersion stability, the effects of multiple monomer addition steps and varied carbon to lithium ratio are studied. The developed functionalization scheme is also effective for the reductive alkylation of SWNT with dodecyl surface groups. By studying the dodecylated SWNT, the molecular weight of grafted PS chains is estimated. The discovery of a general experimental artifact has implications for all functionalization routes utilizing reduction with lithium in ammonia. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The equations needed to correctly interpret both AC and DC conductivity results of single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) polymer composites and the scaling of these results onto a single master curve are presented. Brief discussions on the factors that determine the critical volume fraction (?c) and the percolation exponent (t) are also given. The results for a series of SWNT–polyimide composites are presented and the parameters obtained from fitting these results are discussed. The critical volume fraction for electrical percolation of the present composite was about 0.0005. Results obtained from previous work on SWNT (MWNT)–polymer composites and other percolation systems and the modeling (interpretation) of these results are also discussed and compared. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work is to make carbon nanotubes dispersible in both water and organic solvents without oxidation and cutting nanotube threads. Polystyrene‐singlewall carbon nanotube (PS‐SWNT) composites were prepared with three different methods: miniemulsion polymerization, conventional emulsion polymerization, and mixing SWNT with PS latex. The two factors, crosslinking and surface coverage of PS are important factors for the mechanical and electrical properties, including dispersion states of SWNT in various solvents. The PS‐SWNT composite prepared via a conventional emulsion polymerization showed SWNT bundles entirely covered with PS, whereas the PS‐SWNT composite prepared via a miniemulsion polymerization showed SWNT partially covered with crosslinked PS nanoparticles. The method of mixing SWNTs with PS latex did not show the well dispersed state of carbon nanotubes because PS was not crosslinked and was dissolved in a solvent, and nanotubes separated from PS precipitated. So the PS nanoparticle‐SWNT composite had lower electrical resistance, and higher mechanical strength than the other composites made by the latter two methods. As the amount of SWNT increases, the bare surface area of SWNT increases and the electrical conductivity increases in the composite made by the miniemulsion polymerization. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
