Anionic conjugated polymer (PFP‐SO) was assembled with a novel enzymatic substrate 6‐O‐modified PNP‐β‐galactoside ( 1 ) for sensitive multiplex enzyme detections. The PFP‐SO/ 1 /lipase/β‐galactosidase system has two chemical input signals which are Input 1 (lipase) and Input 2 (β‐galactosidase), and output optical signals such as fluorescence emission at 416 nm or 450 nm. Four types of logic gates, including YES, INH, NAND and AND, were successfully constructed and utilized for multiplex detections of lipase and β‐galactosidase in one tube.

The direct enzymatic synthesis of a cyclic trimethylene carbonate (1,3‐dioxane‐2‐one) monomer with/without a methyl substituent was carried out using dimethyl or diethyl carbonate and 1,3‐diol with the objective of producing aliphatic poly(trimethylene carbonate), a typical biodegradable synthetic plastic. The lipase‐catalyzed condensation of dimethyl or diethyl carbonate with aliphatic 1,3‐diols using immobilized Candida antarctica lipase (lipase CA) in an organic solvent at 70 °C afforded the corresponding methyl‐substituted and unsubstituted cyclic trimethylene carbonates. The cyclic trimethylene carbonates obtained by the reaction of dimethyl or diethyl carbonates with 1,3‐propanediol and 2‐methyl‐1,3‐propanediol were polymerized by lipase to produce the corresponding polycarbonates.

Summary: Novel biodegradable copolymers derived from succinate, butan‐1,4‐diol, and butan‐1,4‐diamine were synthesized by two‐step polycondensation reactions. The obtained copolymers had a periodical‐sequence structure consisting of ester and amide units, and the melting temperatures of the periodic copolymers increased with an increase in amide content. The crystalline structure of the periodic copolymers differs from that of butylene succinate homopolymer (PBS), and these results suggest that the periodically introduced amide units are included in the crystalline phase forming a novel crystalline structure.

A fluorene diol derivative, 9,9‐bis[4‐(2‐hydroxyethoxy)phenyl]fluorene ( 1 ), reacted with diisocyanates such as 1,3‐bis(isocyanatomethyl)cyclohexane ( 2a ), 1,6‐diisocyanatohexane ( 2b ), and 1,3‐bis(isocyanatomethyl)benzene ( 2c ) under temperature‐controlled microwave irradiation to form the corresponding polyurethanes with being 30 000 to 60 000, measured by GPC with reference to polystyrene standards within 5 to 10 min at 160 to 200 °C. In the reactions of 2a and b , the molecular weights were 15 to 20 times higher than those obtained by conventional oil bath heating. For a solvent of the microwave‐promoted reaction, a hydrocarbon compound, decalin, is preferably used to undergo the polymerization cleanly without unfavorable coloration and/or gelation.

A novel α,ω‐heterofunctional poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomer possessing methacryloyl and thienyl end groups was prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide initiated by potassium thienylethoxide and termination of the living PEO ends with methacryloyl chloride. Incorporation of methacryloyl and thienyl groups was confirmed by free‐radical and oxidative polymerization processes, respectively, and by means of 1H NMR analysis.

Well‐defined polymethylene‐block‐polystyrene (PM‐b‐PS) diblock copolymers were synthesized via a combination of living polymerization of ylides and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene. A series of hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐OHs) with different molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution were prepared using living polymerization of ylides following efficient oxidation in a quantitive functionality. Then, the macroinitiators (PM‐MIs ( = 1 900–15 000; PDI = 1.12–1.23)) transformed from PM‐OHs in ≈ 100% conversion initiated ATRPs of styrene to construct PM‐b‐PS copolymers. The GPC traces indicated the successful extension of PS segment ( of PM‐b‐PS = 5 000–41 800; PDI = 1.08–1.23). Such copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and DSC.

The synthesis of poly(β‐alanine) by Candida antarctica lipase B immobilized as novozyme 435 catalyzed ring‐opening of 2‐azetidinone is reported. After removal of cyclic side products and low molecular weight species pure linear poly(β‐alanine) is obtained. The formation of the polymer is confirmed with 1H NMR spectroscopy and MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry. The average degree of polymerization of the obtained polymer is limited to = 8 by its solubility in the reaction medium. Control experiments with β‐alanine as a substrate confirmed that the ring structure of the 2‐azetidinone is necessary to obtain the polymer.

The lithium salt of 2,6‐difluoro‐2′‐sulfobenzophenone was conveniently synthesized in one‐pot by reacting 2,6‐difluorophenyllithium with 2‐sulfobenzoic acid cyclic anhydride in THF at −70 °C whereafter the product crystallized out of solution. A poly(arylene ether) and a poly(arylene sulfide) were prepared by polycondensation reactions to demonstrate the reactivity and efficacy of this new monomer to produce sulfonated high‐molecular weight aromatic polymers for fuel cell proton‐exchange membranes. This work demonstrated that organolithium chemistry may offer versatile and straightforward pathways to new functional monomers with fluorine atoms activated for nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions.

Summary: The microwave (MW)‐assisted lipase‐catalyzed ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in boiling solvents was investigated for the first time. In case of boiling toluene or benzene the MW‐assisted reaction proceeded significantly slower compared to oil bath heating. On the other hand, using boiling diethyl ether as solvent, an increase of the polymerization rate due to MW irradiation was found. Yield, molecular weight measurements, and MALDI‐TOF analysis supported the results.

Dynamic lattice Monte Carlo simulations on a simple cubic lattice were used to study the association behavior of heteroarm star copolymers with two types of chemically different arms (miktoarm star). The effect of architecture and composition (number and length of arms) on self‐assembly was investigated. Simulations revealed substantial differences between associates formed by linear diblock copolymers and by star copolymers. It was also observed that the length of arms considerably influences the association behavior. Apart from the structural characteristics of the whole associate, the properties of individual stars in associates were also studied. These results provide detailed information on the inner structure of associates.

We examine stochastic computer simulations of the Leibler‐Ohta‐Kawasaki (LOK) phase‐field model 1 , 2 and demonstrate that long‐wavelength line edge roughness (LER) and line width roughness (LWR) in a lamellar diblock copolymer resist depend monotonically on quench depth and noise strength, and that the LER and LWR spectra both exhibit a peak at k0–the characteristic wavenumber of mesophase separation in diblock copolymers. For kk0, we find that the LER spectrum approximately scales like k−1.6. These observations are consistent with previous theoretical, computational, and experimental examinations LER and LWR in diblock copolymer melts, and thus the LOK phase‐field model should be considered a capable and appropriate framework for future examination of long‐wavelength LER and LWR in block copolymer resist systems.

Well‐defined amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers PCL‐b‐[DTC‐co‐(MTC‐mPEG)] with polyethylene glycol methyl ether pendant chains were designed and synthesized. First, monohydroxyl‐terminated macroinitiators PCL‐OH were prepared. Then, ring‐opening copolymerization of 2,2‐dimethyltrimethylene carbonate (DTC) and cyclic carbonate‐terminated PEG (MTC‐mPEG) macromonomer was carried out in the presence of the macroinitiator in bulk to give the target copolymers. All the polymers were characterized by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The polymers have unimodal molecular weight distributions and moderate polydispersity indexes. The amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers self‐assemble in water forming stable micelle solutions with a narrow size distribution.

Enzymatic hydrolysis of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(butylene succinate‐co‐L ‐lactate) (PBSL) has been studied by using a lipase originated from Pseudomonas cepacia. It has been found that the drawn fibers of PBSL are readily hydrolyzed by the action of the lipase, while those of PBS undergo little enzymatic hydrolysis. Since the polymer films of PBS and PBSL are readily hydrolyzed under the same conditions, the enzymatic hydrolysis should depend not only on the crystallinity but also on the molecular orientation. The molecular weight of the samples gradually decreases with incubation time, because nonspecific hydrolysis occurs on the main chains of both PBS and PBSL even in the absence of lipase. The enzymatic hydrolysis of PBS and PBSL gives 4‐hydroxybutyl succinate (HBS) as the main product with traces of succinic acid and butane‐1,4‐diol together with L ‐lactic acid in the case of PBSL. In addition, the hydrolysis rate of the carboxyl end‐capped PBS is much slower than that of the original or hydroxyl end‐capped PBS. These results imply a hydrolysis mechanism involving the preferential exo‐type chain scission from the carboxyl terminals.

Chromophore‐containing dendritic structures (G1, G2) are utilized to intercalate layered silicates, which results in a large d‐spacing up to 126 Å. An exfoliated morphology is obtained by mixing the dendritic structure intercalated layered silicates with polyimide in N,N‐dimethylacetamide solution. The dendritic structures attached on the clay template would arrange in a non‐centrosymmetric manner. This self‐assembled arrangement brought about the electro‐optical coefficients of 5–6 pm · V−1 for these relatively low chromophore‐containing organic/inorganic nanocomposites without resorting to poling. Excellent temporal stability (100 °C) is also achieved.

Enzyme‐loaded magnetic polyelectrolyte multilayer nanotubes prepared by layer‐by‐layer assembly combined with the porous template could be used as biomimetic nanoreactors. It is demonstrated that calcium carbonate can be biomimetically synthesized inside the cavities of the polyelectrolyte nanotubes by the catalysis of urease, and the size of the calcium carbonate precipitates was controlled by the cavity dimensions. The metastable structure of the calcium carbonate precipitates inside the nanotubes was protected by the outer shell of the polyelectrolyte multilayers. These features may allow polyelectrolyte nanotubes to be applied in the fields of nanomaterials synthesis, controlled release, and drug delivery.

Herein, a convenient and general method to simultaneously fix and functionalize polymeric vesicles with sulphydryl groups by the co‐self‐assembly of poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly[3‐(triethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate] (PEO‐b‐PTESPMA) and 3‐mercaptopropyltrialkoxysilane in an aqueous solution is reported. The presence of sulphydryl groups across the vesicle membrane has been confirmed by using an energy‐filtered technique during TEM analysis and by capturing Au nanoparticles.

Summary: An initiator for nitroxide mediated ‘living’ free radical polymerization was prepared with a fluorescent tag attached to the initiating alkyl radical terminus. This was used to synthesize amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐polystyrene diblock copolymers, which self assembled in a tetrahydrofuran/buffer solution to form structures that are visible by fluorescence.

Summary: The vapor‐based synthesis and characterization of a reactive polymer, poly[(4‐formyl‐p‐xylylene)‐co‐(p‐xylylene)] ( 1 ), have been reported. The reactive polymer coating enables the immobilization of oligosaccharides via the chemoselective aldehyde‐hydrazide coupling reaction.

Summary: A class of new, soluble, π‐conjugated polymers containing a fumaronitrile unit in the main chain were synthesized by the reaction between di(4‐bromophenyl)fumaronitrile and bis(2,2‐dimethylpropane‐1,3‐diyl)‐1,4‐dialkoxyphenylene‐2,5‐diborate employing palladium catalysts. All the polymers were photoluminescent and electrochemically active.
