Formation of the O?O bond is considered the critical step in oxidative water cleavage to produce dioxygen. High‐valent metal complexes with terminal oxo (oxido) ligands are commonly regarded as instrumental for oxygen evolution, but direct experimental evidence is lacking. Herein, we describe the formation of the O?O bond in solution, from non‐heme, N5‐coordinate oxoiron(IV) species. Oxygen evolution from oxoiron(IV) is instantaneous once meta‐chloroperbenzoic acid is administered in excess. Oxygen‐isotope labeling reveals two sources of dioxygen, pointing to mechanistic branching between HAT (hydrogen atom transfer)‐initiated free‐radical pathways of the peroxides, which are typical of catalase‐like reactivity, and iron‐borne O?O coupling, which is unprecedented for non‐heme/peroxide systems. Interpretation in terms of [FeIV(O)] and [FeV(O)] being the resting and active principles of the O?O coupling, respectively, concurs with fundamental mechanistic ideas of (electro‐) chemical O?O coupling in water oxidation catalysis (WOC), indicating that central mechanistic motifs of WOC can be mimicked in a catalase/peroxidase setting.  相似文献

Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the reaction mechanism of methanol oxidation mediated by [(bpg)FeIVO]+ ( A ). Two models (CH3CN‐bound ferryl model B and CH3OH‐bound ferryl model C ) were also studied in this work to probe ligand effect. Mechanistically, both direct and concerted hydrogen transfer (DHT and CHT) pathways were explored. It is found that the initial step of methanol oxidation by A is C? H bond activation via a DHT pathway. Addition of different equatorial ligands has considerable influence on the reaction mechanisms. Methanol oxidation mediated by B commences via O? H bond activation; in sharp contrast, the oxidation mediated by C stems from C? H bond activation. Frontier molecular orbital analysis showed that the initial C? H bond activation by all these model complexes follows a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism, whereas O? H bond activation proceeds via an HAT or proton transfer. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenation of imines with cyclohexa‐1,4‐dienes, as well as with a representative Hantzsch ester dihydrogen surrogate, are reported. Both processes are catalyzed by tethered Ru?S complexes but differ in the activation mode of the dihydrogen source: cooperative activation of the H?H bond at the Ru?S bond leads to the corresponding Ru?H complex and protonation of the sulfur atom, whereas the same cationic Ru?S catalyst abstracts a hydride from a donor‐substituted cyclohexa‐1,4‐diene to form the neutral Ru?H complex and a low‐energy Wheland intermediate. A sequence of proton and hydride transfers on the imine substrate then yields an amine. The reaction pathways are analyzed computationally, and the established mechanistic pictures are in agreement with the experimental observations.  相似文献

Co‐crystallisation of, in particular, 4‐iodotetrafluorophenol with a series of secondary and tertiary cyclic amines results in deprotonation of the phenol and formation of the corresponding ammonium phenate. Careful examination of the X‐ray single‐crystal structures shows that the phenate anion develops a C?O double bond and that the C?C bond lengths in the ring suggest a Meissenheimer‐like delocalisation. This delocalisation is supported by the geometry of the phenate anion optimised at the MP2(Full) level of theory within the aug‐cc‐pVDZ basis (aug‐cc‐pVDZ‐PP on I) and by natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses. With sp2 hybridisation at the phenate oxygen atom, there is strong preference for the formation of two non‐covalent interactions with the oxygen sp2 lone pairs and, in the case of secondary amines, this occurs through hydrogen bonding to the ammonium hydrogen atoms. However, where tertiary amines are concerned, there are insufficient hydrogen atoms available and so an electrophilic iodine atom from a neighbouring 4‐iodotetrafluorophenate group forms an I???O halogen bond to give the second interaction. However, in some co‐crystals with secondary amines, it is also found that in addition to the two hydrogen bonds forming with the phenate oxygen sp2 lone pairs, there is an additional intermolecular I???O halogen bond in which the electrophilic iodine atom interacts with the C?O π‐system. All attempts to reproduce this behaviour with 4‐bromotetrafluorophenol were unsuccessful. These structural motifs are significant as they reproduce extremely well, in low‐molar‐mass synthetic systems, motifs found by Ho and co‐workers when examining halogen‐bonding interactions in biological systems. The analogy is cemented through the structures of co‐crystals of 1,4‐diiodotetrafluorobenzene with acetamide and with N‐methylbenzamide, which, as designed models, demonstrate the orthogonality of hydrogen and halogen bonding proposed in Ho’s biological study.  相似文献

C(sp3)-H and O−H bond breaking steps in the oxidation of 1,4-cyclohexadiene and phenol by a Au(III)-OH complex were studied computationally. The analysis reveals that for both types of bonds the initial X−H cleavage step proceeds via concerted proton coupled electron transfer (cPCET), reflecting electron transfer from the substrate directly to the Au(III) centre and proton transfer to the Au-bound oxygen. This mechanistic picture is distinct from the analogous formal Cu(III)-OH complexes studied by the Tolman group (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2019 , 141, 17236–17244), which proceed via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) for C−H bonds and cPCET for O−H bonds. Hence, care should be taken when transferring concepts between Cu−OH and Au−OH species. Furthermore, the ability of Au−OH complexes to perform cPCET suggests further possibilities for one-electron chemistry at the Au centre, for which only limited examples exist.  相似文献

The mechanism of oxidation of organic sulfides in aqueous solutions by hydrogen peroxide was investigated via ab initio calculations. Specifically, two reactions, hydrogen transfer of hydrogen peroxide to form water oxide and the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) by hydrogen peroxide to form dimethyl sulfoxide, were studied as models of these processes in general. Solvent effects are included both via including explicitly water molecules and via the polarizable continuum model. The former was found to have a much more significant effect than the latter. When explicit water molecules are included, a mechanism different from those proposed in the literature was found. Specific interactions including hydrogen bonding with 2-3 water molecules can provide enough stabilization for the charge separation of the activation complex. The energy barrier of the oxidation of DMS by hydrogen peroxide was estimated to be 12.7 kcal/mol, within the experimental range of the oxidation of analogous compounds (10-20 kcal/mol). The major reaction coordinates of the reaction are the breaking of the O-O bond of H2O2 and the formation of the S-O bond, the transfer of hydrogen to the distal oxygen of hydrogen peroxide occurring after the system has passed the transition state. Reaction barriers of the hydrogen transfer of H2O2 are an average of 10 kcal/mol or higher than the reaction barriers of the oxidation of DMS. Therefore, a two-step oxidation mechanism in which, first, the transfer of a hydrogen atom occurs to form water oxide and, second, the transfer of oxygen to the substrate occurs is unlikely to be correct. Our proposed oxidation mechanism does not suggest a pH dependence of oxidation rate within a moderate range around neutral pH (i.e., under conditions in which hydronium and hydroxide ions do not participate directly in the reaction), and it agrees with experimental observations over moderate pH values. Also, without including a protonated solvent molecule, it has activation energies that correspond to measured activation energies.  相似文献

Three examples of unusual double aromatic C?H bond activation associated with insertion of etheral oxygen atom to phenazine architecture in RuIII complexes are reported. The chemical transformations have led to the formation of new RuIV complexes with angular pentacyclo heterocyclic ligands. A mechanistic investigation indicates that the overall process is a combination of successive steps involving air (O2) and H2O.  相似文献

Metal‐catalyzed C?H activation not only offers important strategies to construct new bonds, it also allows the merge of important research areas. When quinoline N‐oxide is used as an arene source in C?H activation studies, the N?O bond can act as a directing group as well as an O‐atom donor. The newly reported density functional theory method, M11L, has been used to elucidate the mechanistic details of the coupling between quinoline N?O bond and alkynes, which results in C?H activation and O‐atom transfer. The computational results indicated that the most favorable pathway involves an electrophilic deprotonation, an insertion of an acetylene group into a Rh?C bond, a reductive elimination to form an oxazinoquinolinium‐coordinated RhI intermediate, an oxidative addition to break the N?O bond, and a protonation reaction to regenerate the active catalyst. The regioselectivity of the reaction has also been studied by using prop‐1‐yn‐1‐ylbenzene as a model unsymmetrical substrate. Theoretical calculations suggested that 1‐phenyl‐2‐quinolinylpropanone would be the major product because of better conjugation between the phenyl group and enolate moiety in the corresponding transition state of the regioselectivity‐determining step. These calculated data are consistent with the experimental observations.  相似文献

A terminal iridium oxo complex with an open‐shell (S=1) ground state was isolated upon hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the respective iridium(II) hydroxide. Electronic structure examinations support large spin delocalization to the oxygen atom. Selected oxo transfer reactions indicate the ambiphilic reactivity of the iridium oxo moiety. Calorimetric and computational examinations of the HAT revealed a bond dissociation free energy for the IrO?H bond that is sufficient for hydrogen atom abstraction towards C?H bonds and small contributions from entropy and spin–orbit coupling to the HAT thermochemistry.  相似文献

Oxidation of CpCr[(XylNCMe)(2)CH] (Xyl = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3)) with pyridine N-oxide or air generated the μ-oxo dimer, {CpCr[(XylNCMe)(2)CH]}(2)(μ-O). The μ-oxo dimer was converted to paramagnetic Cr(III) CpCr[(XylNCMe)(2)CH](X) complexes (X = OH, O(2)CPh, Cl, OTs) via protonolysis reactions. The related Cr(III) alkoxide complexes (X = OCMe(3), OCMe(2)Ph) were prepared by salt metathesis and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The interconversion of the Cr(III) complexes and their reduction back to Cr(II) with Mn powder were monitored using UV-vis spectroscopy. The related CpCr[(DepNCMe)(2)CH] (Dep = 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3)) Cr(II) complex was studied for catalytic oxygen atom transfer reactions with PPh(3) using O(2) or air. Both Cr(II) complexes reacted with pyridine N-oxide and γ-terpinene to give the corresponding Cr(III) hydroxide complexes. When CpCr[(DepNCMe)(2)CH] was treated with pyridine N-oxide in benzene in the absence of hydrogen atom donors, a dimeric Cr(III) hydroxide product was isolated and structurally characterized, apparently resulting from intramolecular hydrogen atom abstraction of a secondary benzylic ligand C-H bond followed by intermolecular C-C bond formation. The use of very bulky hexaisopropylterphenyl ligand substituents did not preclude the formation of the analogous μ-oxo dimer, which was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Attempts to develop a chromium-catalyzed intermolecular hydrogen atom transfer process based on these reactions were unsuccessful. The protonolysis and reduction reactions of the μ-oxo dimer were used to improve the previously reported Cr-catalyzed radical cyclization of a bromoacetal.  相似文献

The combination of nickel metallaphotoredox catalysis, hydrogen atom transfer catalysis, and a Lewis acid activation mode, has led to the development of an arylation method for the selective functionalization of alcohol α‐hydroxy C?H bonds. This approach employs zinc‐mediated alcohol deprotonation to activate α‐hydroxy C?H bonds while simultaneously suppressing C?O bond formation by inhibiting the formation of nickel alkoxide species. The use of Zn‐based Lewis acids also deactivates other hydridic bonds such as α‐amino and α‐oxy C?H bonds. This approach facilitates rapid access to benzylic alcohols, an important motif in drug discovery. A 3‐step synthesis of the drug Prozac exemplifies the utility of this new method.  相似文献

Heme and nonheme monoxygenases and dioxygenases catalyze important oxygen atom transfer reactions to substrates in the body. It is now well established that the cytochrome P450 enzymes react through the formation of a high‐valent iron(IV)–oxo heme cation radical. Its precursor in the catalytic cycle, the iron(III)–hydroperoxo complex, was tested for catalytic activity and found to be a sluggish oxidant of hydroxylation, epoxidation and sulfoxidation reactions. In a recent twist of events, evidence has emerged of several nonheme iron(III)–hydroperoxo complexes that appear to react with substrates via oxygen atom transfer processes. Although it was not clear from these studies whether the iron(III)–hydroperoxo reacted directly with substrates or that an initial O?O bond cleavage preceded the reaction. Clearly, the catalytic activity of heme and nonheme iron(III)–hydroperoxo complexes is substantially different, but the origins of this are still poorly understood and warrant a detailed analysis. In this work, an extensive computational analysis of aromatic hydroxylation by biomimetic nonheme and heme iron systems is presented, starting from an iron(III)–hydroperoxo complex with pentadentate ligand system (L52). Direct C?O bond formation by an iron(III)–hydroperoxo complex is investigated, as well as the initial heterolytic and homolytic bond cleavage of the hydroperoxo group. The calculations show that [(L52)FeIII(OOH)]2+ should be able to initiate an aromatic hydroxylation process, although a low‐energy homolytic cleavage pathway is only slightly higher in energy. A detailed valence bond and thermochemical analysis rationalizes the differences in chemical reactivity of heme and nonheme iron(III)–hydroperoxo and show that the main reason for this particular nonheme complex to be reactive comes from the fact that they homolytically split the O?O bond, whereas a heterolytic O?O bond breaking in heme iron(III)–hydroperoxo is found.  相似文献

A family of iridium(I) hydroxides of the form [Ir(cod)(NHC)(OH)] (cod=1,5‐cyclooctadiene, NHC=N‐heterocyclic carbene) is reported. Single‐crystal X‐ray analyses and computational methods were used to explore the structural characteristics and steric properties of these new complexes. The model complex [Ir(cod)(IiPr)(OH)] (IiPr=1,3‐(diisopropyl)imidazol‐2‐ylidene) undergoes reaction with a wide variety of substrates including boronic acids and silicon compounds. In addition, O? H, N? H and C? H bond activation was achieved with alcohols, carboxylic acids, amines and various sp‐, sp2‐ and sp3‐hybridised carbon centres, giving access to a wide range of new IrI complexes. These studies have allowed us to explore the exciting reactivity of this motif, revealing a versatile and useful synthon capable of activating important chemical bonds under mild (typically room temperature) conditions. No additives were required and, in the case of X? H bond activation, water was the only waste product, rendering this an atom efficient procedure for bond activation. This system has great potential for the construction of new catalytic cycles for organic synthesis and small‐molecule activation.  相似文献

A mechanistic study was performed on the Rh‐catalyzed stereoselective C?C/C?H activation of tert‐cyclobutanols. The present study corroborated the previous proposal that the reaction occurs by metalation, β‐C elimination, 1,4‐Rh transfer, C?O insertion, and a final catalyst‐regeneration step. The rate‐determining step was found to be the 1,4‐Rh transfer step, whereas the stereoselectivity‐determining step did not correspond to any of the aforementioned steps. It was found that both the thermodynamic stability of the product of the β‐C elimination and the kinetic feasibility of the 1,4‐Rh transfer and C?O insertion steps made important contributions. In other words, three steps (i.e., β‐C elimination, 1,4‐Rh transfer, and C?O insertion) were found to be important in determining the configurations of the two quaternary stereocenters.  相似文献

The synthesis of a ruthenium carbene complex based on a sulfonyl‐substituted methandiide and its application in bond activation reactions and cooperative catalysis is reported. In the complex, the metal–carbon interaction can be tuned between a Ru?C single bond with additional electrostatic interactions and a Ru?C double bond, thus allowing the control of the stability and reactivity of the complex. Hence, activation of polar and non‐polar bonds (O?H, H?H) as well as dehydrogenation reactions become possible. In these reactions the carbene acts as a non‐innocent ligand supporting the bond activation as nucleophilic center in the 1,2‐addition across the metal–carbon double bond. This metal–ligand cooperativity can be applied in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation for the reduction of ketones. This concept opens new ways for the application of carbene complexes in catalysis.  相似文献

Ab initio and density functional theory studies have been performed on the hydrogen‐bonded complexes of neutral and protonated nicotine with ethanol, methanol, and trifluromethanol to explore their relative stability in a systematic way. Among all the hydrogen‐bonded nicotine complexes considered here, protonated forms in nicotine–ethanol and nicotine–methanol, and neutral form in nicotine–trifluromethanol complexes have been found to be the most stable. In the former two complexes, the proton attached to the pyrrolidine nitrogen acts as a strong hydrogen bond donor, whereas the pyrrolidine nitrogen atom acts as a hydrogen bond acceptor in the latter case. Neutral complex of nicotine with trifluromethanol has been found to possess a very short hydrogen bond (1.57 Å) and basis set superposition error corrected hydrogen bond energy value of 19 kcal/mol. The nature of the various hydrogen bonds formed has been investigated through topological aspects using Bader's atoms in molecules theory. From the calculated topological results, excellent linear correlation is shown to exist among the hydrogen bond length, electron density, and its Laplacian at the bond critical points for all the complexes considered. The natural bond orbital analysis has been carried out to investigate the charge transfer in the nicotine alcohol complexes. In contrast to the blue shifting behavior that is generally exhibited by other C? H···O hydrogen bonds involving sp3 carbon atom, the C? H···O hydrogen bond in the protonated nicotine–ethanol and methanol complexes has been found to be proper with red shifting in nature. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We present an atom‐economic strategy to catalytically generate and intercept nitrile anion equivalents using hydrogen transfer catalysis. Addition of α,β‐unsaturated nitriles to a pincer‐based Ru?H complex affords structurally characterized κ‐N‐coordinated keteniminates by selective 1,4‐hydride transfer. When generated in situ under catalytic hydrogenation conditions, electrophilic addition to the keteniminate was achieved using anhydrides to provide α‐cyanoacetates in high yields. This work represents a new application of hydrogen transfer catalysis using α,β‐unsaturated nitriles for reductive C?C coupling reactions.  相似文献

Manganese(IV)‐oxo complexes are often invoked as intermediates in Mn‐catalyzed C−H bond activation reactions. While many synthetic MnIV‐oxo species are mild oxidants, other members of this class can attack strong C−H bonds. The basis for these reactivity differences is not well understood. Here we describe a series of MnIV‐oxo complexes with N5 pentadentate ligands that modulate the equatorial ligand field of the MnIV center, as assessed by electronic absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance, and Mn K‐edge X‐ray absorption methods. Kinetic experiments show dramatic rate variations in hydrogen‐atom and oxygen‐atom transfer reactions, with faster rates corresponding to weaker equatorial ligand fields. For these MnIV‐oxo complexes, the rate enhancements are correlated with both 1) the energy of a low‐lying 4E excited state, which has been postulated to be involved in a two‐state reactivity model, and 2) the MnIII/IV reduction potentials.  相似文献

Reversible proton‐ and electron‐transfer steps are crucial for various chemical transformations. The electron‐reservoir behavior of redox non‐innocent ligands and the proton‐reservoir behavior of chemically non‐innocent ligands can be cooperatively utilized for substrate bond activation. Although site‐decoupled proton‐ and electron‐transfer steps are often found in enzymatic systems, generating model metal complexes with these properties remains challenging. To tackle this issue, we present herein complexes [(cod?H)M(μ‐L2?) M (cod?H)] (M=PtII, [ 1 ] or PdII, [ 2 ], cod=1,5‐cyclooctadiene, H2L=2,5‐di‐[2,6‐(diisopropyl)anilino]‐1,4‐benzoquinone), in which cod acts as a proton reservoir, and L2? as an electron reservoir. Protonation of [ 2 ] leads to an unusual tetranuclear complex. However, [ 1 ] can be stepwise reversibly protonated with up to two protons on the cod?H ligands, and the protonated forms can be stepwise reversibly reduced with up to two electrons on the L2? ligand. The doubly protonated form of [ 1 ] is also shown to react with OMe? leading to an activation of the cod ligands. The site‐decoupled proton and electron reservoir sources work in tandem in a three‐way cooperative process that results in the transfer of two electrons and two protons to a substrate leading to its double reduction and protonation. These results will possibly provide new insights into developing catalysts for multiple proton‐ and electron‐transfer reactions by using metal complexes of non‐innocent ligands.  相似文献

[Cp*RhIII]‐catalyzed C? H activation of arenes assisted by an oxidizing N? O or N? N directing group has allowed the construction of a number of hetercycles. In contrast, a polar N? O bond is well‐known to undergo O‐atom transfer (OAT) to alkynes. Despite the liability of N? O bonds in both C? H activation and OAT, these two important areas evolved separately. In this report, [Cp*RhIII] catalysts integrate both areas in an efficient redox‐neutral coupling of quinoline N‐oxides with alkynes to afford α‐(8‐quinolyl)acetophenones. In this process the N? O bond acts as both a directing group for C? H activation and as an O‐atom donor.  相似文献
