Four kinds of molecularly thin films of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) with different functional cations were prepared on silicon substrates by dip‐coating method. Thermal stability of the RTILs was evaluated using Mettler thermal gravity analysis (TGA) in a nitrogen atmosphere. Chemical compositions of the RTIL nanofilms were examined by means of multifunctional XPS. Nanoscaled adhesion and friction forces between the films and AFM tip were measured by FFM whereas the morphologies of the films were also investigated. Microscaled friction and wear behaviors between the films and Si3N4 ball were further measured by the microtribometer. The micro/nanotribological behaviors of different RTIL films were comparatively investigated and discussed in terms of functional cations of the RTILs molecules. Results in this paper revealed that the functional cations of the RTIL films significantly affected their tribological behaviors both in micro‐ and nanoscales. The corresponding micro/nanotribological mechanism of the tested ultrathin RTIL films under the test conditions was consequently proposed based on the experimental results. Block copolyimides based on aromatic dianhydrides and diamines copolymerized with diamino room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) monomers were synthesized over a range of compositions. Specifically, two diamino RTILs, 1,3‐di(3‐aminopropyl) imidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl] imide ([DAPIM] [NTf2]) and 1,12‐di[3‐(3‐aminopropyl) imidazolium] dodecane bis[(trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl] imide ([C12 (DAPIM)2] [NTf2]2) were synthesized using a Boc protection method. The two RTILs were reacted with 2,2‐bis(3,4‐carboxylphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) to produce 6FDA‐RTILs oligomers that formed the RTIL component for the block copolyimides. The oligomers were reacted with 6FDA and m‐phenylenediamine (MDA) at oligomer concentration from 6.5 to 25.8 mol % to form block copolyimides. Increasing the concentration of the 6FDA‐RTIL oligomer in the block copolyimides resulted in a decrease in the thermal degradation temperature, glass transition temperature and an increase in the density. The gas permeability of the RTIL based block copolyimide decreased but the ideal permeability selectivity for CO2/CH4 gas pair increased relative to the pure 6FDA‐MDA. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Many important applications of room temperature ionic liquids(RTILs), e.g., lubrication, energy storage and catalysis, involve RTILs confined to solid surfaces. In order to optimize the performance, it is critical to understand the wettability of nanometer-thick RTILs on solid surfaces. In this review, the recent progress in this filed is presented. First, the macroscopic wettability of RTILs on solids will be discussed briefly.Afterwards, the wetting of nanometer-thick RTILs will be discussed with the emphasis on RTIL/mica and RTIL/graphite interfaces since mica and graphite not only are mostly studied but also have important real-life applications. For RTIL/mica interface, the extended layering that promotes the wetting has been extensively reported and it is generally accepted that the electrostatic interaction at the RTIL/mica interface is the key. However, recent works from others and us highlight the unexpected effect of water:Water enables ion exchange between K+and the cations of RTILs on the mica surface and thus triggers the ordered packing of cations/anions in RTILs, resulting in extended layering. Different from mica, there is no electrical charge on the graphite surface. Interestingly, previous reports showed inconsistent results on the wettability of RTILs on graphite. Recent research from others and us suggested that π-π~+stacking between sp~2 carbon and the imidazoliumcation in the RTILs is the key to the extended layering and enhanced wettability of RTILs. Lastly, the future research directions will be briefly discussed.  相似文献

Combining spectroscopic techniques (TRES and EXAFS) and molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the state of trivalent europium dissolved in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), as a function of the RTIL anion and in the presence of added chloride anions. The studied RTILs are based on the 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium (Bumim+) cation and differ by their anionic counterparts: BF4-, PF6-, Tf- (triflate, CF3SO3-), and Tf2N- [(CF3SO2)2N-]. The results show the strong influence of the RTIL nature on the first solvation shell of europium and on its complexation with chloride. Depending on the RTIL, europium(III), which was introduced in solution as a triflate salt, is found to be solvated either by RTIL anions only or as neutral undissociated EuTf3 moieties completed by solvent anions. Kinetic effects, related to the viscosity of the RTIL and the nature of the europium salt, also markedly influence the coordination of added Cl- or F- anions to the metal.  相似文献

Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), especially pyrrolidinium based RTILs with bis(trifluoromethane‐sulfonyl)imide (TFSI) as counterion, are frequently proposed as promising electrolyte component candidates thanks to their high thermal as well as high oxidation stability. In order to avoid a resource intensive experimental approach, mainly based on trial and error experiments, a computational screening method for pre‐selecting suitable candidate molecules was adopted and three homologous series compounds were synthesized by modifying the cation structure of pyrrolidinium RTILs. The obtained high purity RTILs: methyl‐methylcarboxymethyl pyrrolidinium TFSI (MMMPyrTFSI), methyl‐ethylcarboxymethyl pyrrolidinium TFSI (MEMPyrTFSI) and methylpropylcarboxymethyl pyrrolidinium TFSI (MPMPyrTFSI) revealed excellent thermal stabilities higher than 300 °C. Furthermore, MMMPyrTFSI and MPMPyrTFSI exhibit high oxidation stability up to 5.4 V vs. Li/Li+. No aluminum corrosion of current collector was observed at 5 V vs. Li/Li+. In addition to that, these RTILs display a superior salt (LiTFSI) solubility (3.0–3.5 M), compared to the unmodified RTIL 1‐butyl‐1‐methylpyrrolidinium TFSI (Pyr14TFSI) (1.5–2.0 M) at room temperature. All these properties make novel ester modified RTILs promising and interesting candidates for application in rechargeable lithium batteries.  相似文献

Lithium-sulfur(Li-S) battery is a promising choice for the next generation of high-energy rechargeable batteries, but its application is impeded by the high dissolution of the polysulfides in commonly used organic electrolyte. Room temperature ionic liquids(RTILs) have been considered as appealing candidates for the electrolytes in Li-S batteries. We investigated the effect of cations in RTILs on the electrochemical performance for Li-S batteries. Ex situ investigation of lithium anode for Li-S batteries indicates that during the discharge/charge process the RTIL with N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidine cations(P13) can effectively suppress the dissolution of the polysulfides, whereas the RTIL with 1-methyl-3-propyl imidazolium cation(PMIM) barely alleviates the shuttling problem. With 0.5 mol L-1 LiTFSI/P13 TFSI as the electrolyte of Li-S battery, the ketjen black/ sulfur cathode material exhibits high capacity and remarkable cycling stability, which promise the application of the P13-based RTILs in Li-S batteries.  相似文献

In ionic liquids, the diffusion coefficients of a redox couple vary considerably between the neutral and radical ion forms of the molecule. For a reduction, the inequality of the diffusion coefficients is characterized by the ratio gamma = D(red)/D(ox), where D(red) and D(ox) are the diffusion coefficients of the electrogenerated radical anion and of the corresponding neutral molecule, respectively. In this work, measurements of gamma have been performed by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in transient feedback mode, in three different room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) sharing the same anion and with a series of nitro-derivative compounds taken as a test family. The smallest gamma ratios were determined in an imidazolium-based RTIL and with the charge of the radical anion localized on the nitro group. Conversely, gamma tends to unity when the radical anion is fully delocalized or when the nitro group is sterically protected by bulky substituents. The gamma ratios, standard potentials of the redox couple measured in RTILs, and those observed in a classical organic solvent were compared for the investigated family of compounds. The stabilization energies approximately follow the gamma ratios in a given RTIL but change considerably between ionic liquids with the nature of the cation.  相似文献

The surface and aqueous interfacial tensions for a series of water-immiscible room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have been measured. The RTILs used in this study were based on 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations (Cnmim, n=6, 8, 10, and 12) and bis(perfluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMSI) and bis(perfluoroethylsulfonyl)imide (BETI) anions. It was found that the surface tensions of the RTILs increased with an increasing cation chain length similar to the behavior of n-alkanes. Interfacial tensions of the RTILs with aqueous solutions, however, were found to decrease with the cation chain length, which has been attributed to the increased surface activity of the longer chain cations. We have also demonstrated the first use of electrocapillary measurements to study the polarizable RTIL/aqueous interfaces. From the electrocapillary data, the potential of zero charge (PZC) for these RTIL/aqueous interfaces was determined, as well as the relative surface excess charge and capacitance. The PZC was found to be dependent upon the structure of the anions and cations with PZC values ranging from -357 mV for C6mimBETI and -161 mV for C10mimBMSI. The electrocapillary results also show that the cations of the RTIL are becoming increasingly surface-active as the alkyl chain on the cation is lengthened, thereby modulating the interfacial potential.  相似文献

This study focuses on the solubility behaviors of CO2, CH4, and N2 gases in binary mixtures of imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2mim][Tf2N]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C2mim][BF4]) at 40 degrees C and low pressures (approximately 1 atm). The mixtures tested were 0, 25, 50, 75, 90, 95, and 100 mol % [C2mim][BF4] in [C2mim][Tf2N]. Results show that regular solution theory (RST) can be used to describe the gas solubility and selectivity behaviors in RTIL mixtures using an average mixture solubility parameter or an average measured mixture molar volume. Interestingly, the solubility selectivity, defined as the ratio of gas mole fractions in the RTIL mixture, of CO2 with N2 or CH4 in pure [C2mim][BF4] can be enhanced by adding 5 mol % [C2mim][Tf2N].  相似文献

The voltammetric response of graphite or carbon nanotube paste electrodes, which incorporate the room temperature ionic liquid, N‐butyl‐N‐methyl pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide or [C4mpyrr][NTf2], (RTIL‐CNTPE and RTIL‐CPE respectively) as the binder, towards anionic, cationic and neutral redox probes is examined and compared to conventional paste electrodes which use mineral oil as the binder. The RTIL paste electrodes are found to suffer from very large background currents due to capacitive charging. This is exacerbated further when CNTs are combined with RTILs in the paste. The large charging currents obscure any Faradaic processes of interest, especially at low analyte concentrations. By employing steady state voltammetry at a rotating disk electrode made of the RTIL pastes this problem can be overcome. This allows the electroanalytical properties of these interesting electrode substrates, which combine the attractive properties of CNTs with RTILs to be further explored and developed.  相似文献

An unusual ionic conduction phenomenon related to the phase transition of a novel phosphonium-cation-based room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) is reported; we found that in the phase change upon cooling, a clear increase in ionic conductivity was seen as the temperature was lowered, which differs from widely known conventional RTILs; clearly, our finding of abnormality of the correlation between temperature change and ionic conduction is the first observation in the electrolyte field.  相似文献

The fluorescence depletion dynamics of Rhodamine 700 (R-700) molecules in room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([emim][BF(4)]) and 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([HOemim][BF(4)]) were investigated to determine the local viscosity of the microenvironment surrounding the fluorescent molecules, which is induced by strong hydrogen bonding interaction between cationic and anionic components in RTILs. The solvation and rotation dynamics of R-700 molecules in RTILs show slower time constants relative to that in conventional protic solvents with the same bulk viscosity, indicating that the probe molecule is facing a more viscous microenvironment in RTILs than in conventional solvents because of the strong hydrogen bonding interaction between cationic and anionic components. In addition, this effect is more pronounced in hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid than in the regular RTIL due to the presence of a hydroxyl group as a strong hydrogen bonding donor. The hydrogen-bonding-induced local viscosity enhancement effect related to the heterogeneity character of RTILs is confirmed by the nonexponential rotational relaxation of R-700 determined by time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC). The geometry of hydrogen bonding complexes with different components and sizes are further optimized by density functional theory methods to show the possible hydrogen-bond networks. A model of the hydrogen-bonding network in RTILs is further proposed to interpret the observed specific solvation and local viscosity enhancement effect in RTILs, where most of the fluoroprobes exist as the free nonbonding species in the RTIL solutions and are surrounded by the hydrogen-bonding network formed by the strong hydrogen-bonding between the cationic and anionic components in RTIL. The optimized geometry of hydrogen bonding complexes with different components and sizes by density functional theory methods confirms the local viscosity enhancement effect deduced from fluorescence depletion and TCSPC experiments. The calculated interaction energies reveal the existence of the stronger hydrogen bonding network in RTILs (especially in hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid) than that in conventional protic solvent, which leads to the enhancement effect of local microviscosity, and therefore leads to the slow solvation and rotation dynamics of probe molecules observed in RTILs.  相似文献

The electrochemical behaviour of ferrocenemethanol (FcMeOH) has been studied in a range of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperomery and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). The diffusion coefficient of FcMeOH, measured using chronoamperometry, decreased with increasing RTIL viscosity. Analysis of the mass transport properties of the RTILs revealed that the Stokes-Einstein equation did not apply to our data. The "correlation length" was estimated from diffusion coefficient data and corresponded well to the average size of holes (voids) in the liquid, suggesting that a model in which the diffusing species jumps between holes in the liquid is appropriate in these liquids. Cyclic voltammetry at ultramicroelectrodes demonstrated that the ability to record steady-state voltammograms during ferrocenemethanol oxidation depended on the voltammetric scan rate, the electrode dimensions and the RTIL viscosity. Similarly, the ability to record steady-state SECM feedback approach curves depended on the RTIL viscosity, the SECM tip radius and the tip approach speed. Using 1.3 μm Pt SECM tips, steady-state SECM feedback approach curves were obtained in RTILs, provided that the tip approach speed was low enough to maintain steady-state diffusion at the SECM tip. In the case where tip-induced convection contributed significantly to the SECM tip current, this effect could be accounted for theoretically using mass transport equations that include diffusive and convective terms. Finally, the rate of heterogeneous electron transfer across the electrode/RTIL interface during ferrocenemethanol oxidation was estimated using SECM, and k(0) was at least 0.1 cm s(-1) in one of the least viscous RTILs studied.  相似文献

The effect of two room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) on the diffusion of three fluorescent dyes in the gel phase of a triblock copolymer, (PEO)(20)-(PPO)(70)-(PEO)(20) [Pluronic P123; poly ethylene oxide (PEO), poly propylene oxide (PPO)], was studied by using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). We used three dyes, 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), coumarin 480 (C480), and coumarin 343 (C343). By field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), it was observed that the macroscopic structure of the P123 gel remained unaffected upon addition of RTIL. In the absence of RTIL, the diffusion coefficient (D(t)) of the hydrophobic dye DCM (1 μm(2) s(-1) at the core) is smaller than that of the other two hydrophilic dyes (7 μm(2) s(-1) for C480 and C343). On addition of RTIL, the D(t) values of all of the dyes increase, indicating a decrease in local viscosity (η(eff)). The η(eff) of the core of the RTIL-P123 gel estimated from the D(t) of DCM is lower than that of both the P123 gel (at the core η=90 cP) and RTIL (η=110 cP). It is shown that the RTIL affects the structure of the gel by modifying the size of the micellar aggregates and by penetrating the core.  相似文献

Electrochemical functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was one of selective, clean, and nondestructive chemical methods. But in previous studies it met difficulties in homogeneous electrografting of SWNTs in large quantities because the reaction was often localized on a very thin film (ca. 2 microm). In this report, a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) supported three-dimensional network SWNT electrode was first utilized to break through this barrier. In this work, large quantities of SWNTs were considerably untangled in RTILs so as to greatly increase the effective area of the electrode. N-succinimidyl acrylate (NSA), as a model monomer, was dissolved in the supporting RTILs and was electrografted onto SWNTs (SWNTs-poly-NSA). As an application example, glucose oxidase was directly covalently anchored on the SWNTs-poly-NSA assembly, and the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose in this assembly was investigated. RTILs opened a new path in electrochemical functionalization of SWNTs.  相似文献

The mode of partitioning of uranyl ion between nitrate-containing aqueous phases and various N,N'-dialkylimidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) in the presence of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) is shown to change from an ion-exchange process to one involving extraction of a neutral uranyl-TBP-nitrato complex as the aqueous nitrate concentration is increased. Increasing the hydrophobicity of the RTIL cation eventually leads to nitrato complex extraction as the predominant mode of partitioning, regardless of nitrate concentration.  相似文献

Ionic liquids as media for nucleophilic fluorination   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The use of Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs) for a variety of halogen exchange (Halex) fluorination processes using alkali metal fluorides is assessed. Whilst fluorination of a range of halogenated substrates is possible in good yield, the utility of RTILs as reusable, inert media for such reactions is limited by the gradual decomposition of the RTIL in the presence of highly basic fluoride ion.  相似文献

Rotational motion of a nitroxide radical, peroxylamine disulfonate (PADS), dissolved in room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) was studied by analyzing electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of PADS in various RTILs. We determined physical properties of PADS such as the hyperfine coupling constant (A), the temperature dependence of anisotropic rotational correlation times (τ(∥) and τ(⊥)), and rotational anisotropy (N). We observed that the A values remain unchanged for various RTILs, which indicates negligible interaction between the N-O PADS group and the cation of RTIL. Large N values suggest strong interaction of the negative sulfonyl parts of PADS with the cations of RTILs. Most of the τ(∥), τ(⊥), and (τ(∥)τ(⊥))(1/2) values are within the range calculated on the basis of a hydrodynamic theory with stick and slip boundary conditions. It was deduced that this theory could not adequately explain the measured results in some RTILs with smaller BF(4) and PF(6) anions.  相似文献

Abstract

We show that the superoxide ion (O2 ??) generated electrochemically from oxygen dissolved in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) reacts with primary and secondary alcohols to form the corresponding ketones and carboxylic acids, respectively. Specifically, we study the conversion of benzhydrol to benzophenone and benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde/benzoic acid. The kinetics (e.g., rate, selectivity, and yield) for these reactions are also determined as functions of the variations in the structure of the ionic liquids. The RTILs used here are imidazolium-based cations where the functional groups on the imidazolium ring are modified. Specifically, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [bmim][PF6], 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [bdmim][PF6], and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [hmim][PF6] are used as the reaction medium. These results are compared to an ammonium-based RTIL (N-butyl-N-trimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide). The results show that the nucleophilic attack by the O2 ?? of both the RTIL and the alcohol, especially that of the H atom at the R2 position of the [bmim][PF6] and [hmim][PF6], greatly affects the yields. No RTIL degradation products were detected for the reactions in [bdmim][PF6] and N-butyl-N-trimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids. For the benzyl alcohol oxidation reaction in the RTIL, N-butyl-N-trimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, benzaldehyde formed did not undergo further oxidation to form benzoic acid, which may be due to the greater hydrophobicity of this RTIL. The competitive reaction kinetics between the alcohol and RTIL component must be considered in the selection of the RTIL solvent system.  相似文献
