We have investigated the electro-optical performance of switchable nematic emulsions as a function of temperature. The electro-optical properties of nematic emulsions are highly dependent on temperature because several parameters such as droplet size, number density, viscosity, surface free energy, elastic constant, refractive indices, dielectric anisotropy, and liquid crystal/monomer solubility are affected by temperature. In particular, both ON state transmittances and decay times show a decreasing behaviour with increasing temperature. On the contrary, the OFF state transmittances increase, and the rise times do not change in an appreciable way.  相似文献

We have investigated the morphology and electro-optical properties of reverse mode polymer dispersed liquid crystals as a function of liquid crystal loading. Reverse mode shutters have been obtained by a polymerization-induced phase separation of mixtures, consisting of a liquid crystalline monomer and a non-reactive nematic liquid crystal, placed between rough conductive surfaces. Such surfaces are able to keep the photopolymerizable mixtures homeotropically aligned without the use of any aligning polymer substrate. OFF state transmittances are always larger than 80% and the switching fields decrease if the non-reactive liquid crystal percentage is increased. Both rise and decay times are always lower than 10 ms. The electro-optical properties have been related to the sample morphology and a simple mode is proposed.  相似文献

Switchable nematic emulsions are micron-sized droplets of nematic liquid crystal, floating in isotropic fluid matrices. Such droplets can be switched from an opaque (off) to a transparent (on) state by application of very low electric fields. It is known that the electro-optical properties of liquid crystal dispersions are affected by several parameters, including the liquid crystal loading. The electro-optical response of nematic emulsions has been investigated as a function of liquid crystal weight percentage. Almost transparent films with a reduced contrast ratio are obtained with lower liquid crystal contents. A macroscopic phase separation is observed when liquid crystal content exceeds 45 wt %. On the contrary, large contrast ratios and very low switching fields can be obtained if liquid crystal ranges from 25 to 35 wt %. Consequently, nematic emulsions prepared in this liquid crystal range can be used as promising systems for electro-optical applications. In addition to technological developments, these results can help computational and basic studies of phase separation in novel multiphase liquid crystalline materials.  相似文献

Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystals (PDLCs) are liquid crystal dispersions in a polymer matrix, which look like opaque in their OFF state, when no electric field is applied, and transparent in their ON state. They are generally obtained by a phase separation process, such as Thermal, Solvent- and Polymerization-Induced Phase Separation (TIPS, SIPS and PIPS, respectively), between two transparent conductive glass substrates. In this paper, a new electro-optical device, formed by a porous polymer membrane imbibed with liquid crystal by capillary suction, is presented (Polymer Membranes Dispersed Liquid Crystals, PMDLC). Polymer membrane surfaces were made conductive before liquid crystal loading by magnetron sputtering of a thin layer of conductive indium tin oxide. The morphology and the electro-optical response of these devices were investigated and the observed transmittances and relaxation times were found to be similar to those of conventional PDLCs. In addition, PMDLCs showed interesting flexibility as no solid conductive substrate is required and economic convenience as there is no loss of liquid crystal in the polymer matrix.  相似文献

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films operating in reverse mode are transparent electro-optical devices, which can be turned into an opaque state by application of a suitable electric field. The effect was investigated of different UV powers, used during the polymerization process, on the electro-optical and morphology properties of PDLCs, working in reverse mode operation. Films were obtained by UV polymerization of mixtures of a low molecular weight nematic liquid crystal and a photopolymerizable liquid crystal monomer, homeotropically aligned by rough conductive surfaces. The electro-optical and morphology properties of samples were related to the polymerization conditions. Samples polymerized by lower UV powers exhibited “polymer ball” morphology and an electro-optical response due to the liquid crystal director reorientation, whereas samples obtained at higher UV powers showed a “Swiss cheese” morphology and an electro-optical response due to dynamic scattering. In addition, we observed by conductivity and IR measurements that UV exposure induces a degradation of the nematic liquid crystal.  相似文献

Methods of 3D imaging present on the market can be divided into two basic groups: autostereoscopic and stereoscopic. At the stereoscopic methods of 3D imaging it is necessary to use special glasses for separation of images constituting stereo-pair. The most commonly used active glasses consist of two electro-optical transducers based on twisted nematic or other electro-optical effects. Here the evaluation of liquid crystal mixtures is designed intentionally for 3D active glasses in order to eliminate drawbacks of active glasses available on the contemporary market. Material parameters of new designed liquid crystal mixtures such as: elastic constants, viscosity, refractive indices, dielectric and spectral properties as well as response times have been determined. In addition to the symmetrisation of the switching times of 3D active glasses, a dual frequency nematic liquid crystal has been proposed.  相似文献

Nanoparticle dispersions in liquid crystalline materials at low concentrations allow both investigating the formation of defects in liquid crystal (LC) and enhancing the light-scattering properties of LC optical devices. Reverse mode LC dispersions are LC devices, which look like transparent in their OFF state, when no electric field is applied, and opaque in their ON state. In this paper, a new reverse mode device, formed by a dispersion of a LC mixture in a silica nanoparticle crosslinked network, is presented. The morphology and the electro-optical properties of these silica nanoparticle/LC composites were investigated for two different LC mixtures with a negative dielectric anisotropy. The observed transmittances and relaxation times were found to depend strongly on the silica amount and chemical–physical properties of LC used in the sample preparation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We have prepared the composites of a room temperature nematic liquid crystalline material namely 4-(trans-4′-n-hexylcyclohexyl) isothiocyanatobenzoate (6CHBT) and gold nanoparticles (GNPs). Thermodynamic, electro-optical and dielectric properties have been investigated. Effect of dispersion of GNPs on various electro-optical and display parameters of host liquid crystalline material have been studied. Physical parameters such as threshold voltage, dielectric anisotropy and splay elastic constant have altered for composite systems. Due to the dispersion of GNPs, nematic to isotropic transition temperature is significantly increased. Relaxation frequency corresponding to flip-flop motion of the 6CHBT molecules about their short axes has increased due to the presence of GNPs.  相似文献

The effect of boundaries on the nematic–isotropic phase transition temperature in a melt of a metallomesogenic complex was studied for the first time. This was done by comparison of the electro-optical constant of the isotropic phase with the dielectric and optical anisotropy of the nematic phase on the basis of the Landau–de Gennes theory. In a real experiment, the two liquid phases (nematic and isotropic ones) coexist in a range of several degrees around the transition. According to polarization microscopy data, the phase transition temperature decreases by more than 10°C as the metallomesogen layer thickness is reduced from 200 to 5 μm.  相似文献

Thermodynamical, optical, dielectric and electro-optical characterisation of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) and silver nanoparticle (NP) composites have been carried out. Transition temperatures of pure and composites systems have been measured. Thermodynamical studies suggest increase of clearing temperature of the composite material as compared to the pure material. Threshold voltage for switching from bright to dark state and splay elastic constant of the pure and composite materials have been determined. From frequency dependence of dielectric measurements, permittivity, loss, relaxation frequency and dielectric strength of flip-flop mechanism of LC molecules in the nematic phase have been calculated. Dielectric properties of composites have been explained in reference of Maier and Meier theory. The effects of doping of NPs on dielectric and electro-optic properties of LC-NP composites have been discussed.  相似文献

The thermophysical properties of mixtures of poly (2-phenoxyethylacrylate) and 4-cyano-4'-pentyl-biphenyl, 5CB, are investigated using polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The polymer has a molar mass M w = 181 000 g mol -1 ; the low molecular mass liquid crystal exhibits a nematic to isotropic transition at 35.3°C and crystallizes below 23°C. The phase diagram exhibits miscibility gaps in certain regions of temperature and composition where coexisting nematic and isotropic phases are found. From a practical point of view when considering the electro-optical applications of these systems, it proves to be useful to know precisely the amount of small liquid crystal molecules dissolved in the polymer matrix and the concentration of polymer in the nematic phase. The former quantity has a mechanical impact due to a plasticizing effect, an optical impact since it changes the polymer refractive index, while the polymer in the nematic phase shifts the transition temperatures influencing the electro-optical response of the liquid crystal. The present work addresses these important aspects using POM and DSC.  相似文献

Thermodynamic, structural and dynamical properties of a new type of discotic compounds, a hydrocarbon without any heteroatoms, displaying a nematic discotic phase have been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, electro-optical relaxation, and calorimetric studies. Of particular interest are the strength of the first order nematic—isotropic phase transition and the nature of the orientational fluctuations in the isotropic phase. The short range positional order was found to be biaxial in both the isotropic and the nematic phase. The isotropic phase displays strong pretransitional effects originating from orientational fluctuations in the neighbourhood of the transition to the nematic phase. The character of these pretransitional effects differs from that found for calamitic systems in that the number of correlated molecules g2 is extremely large, of the order of 600 at the clearing temperature and the electro-optical relaxation time is very large, caused by the large value of g2.  相似文献

We prepared composites of a liquid crystalline material, 4-pentylphenyl 4-octyloxybenzoate (4PP4OB) and cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe-QDs) and investigated their thermodynamic, electro-optical and dielectric properties. The effect of QDs on transition temperature from isotropic to nematic and nematic to smectic A phases was evaluated in this study. The effect of CdSe-QDs inclusion on various display parameters on host liquid crystals was studied in the nematic phase. The electrical parameters of the composites – relative permittivity, dielectric anisotropy, dielectric loss and dielectric relaxation – were investigated in the nematic and smectic phases. The changes in dielectric parameters of the composites are explained in terms of Maier–Meier theory.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We prepared a homologous series of H-shaped liquid crystals I-n and investigated their phase transition properties using optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All the compounds exhibited a nematic phase at room temperature. The phase transition behaviour is explained in terms of molecular shape anisotropy. Furthermore, those compounds were found to exhibit electro-optical switching in the isotropic liquid in the vicinity of the nematic–isotropic liquid transition, indicating that the microscopic nematic order with a certain coherence length of the molecules exists in the optically isotropic temperature range.  相似文献

In this work, a novel photo-alignment material, poly(cinnamolyethyl methacrylate) (PCEMA), was synthesized by photo-dimerization. We investigated the electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal displays (LCDs) photo-aligned with linearly polarized UV light irradiation at normal direction on the PCEMA surfaces. Excellent voltagetransmittance characteristics were observed. The threshold voltage of the photo-aligned TN-LCD decreases with increasing UV irradiation time. Additionally, response times are almost the same as for a rubbing-aligned TN-LCD.  相似文献

Modulation of the intensity of light by high quality reflective micro-displays is predominantly carried out by liquid crystal over silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulator (SLM) technology for applications such as pico-projectors. Wider use of these devices, in applications such as computer-generated holography and optical correlation, is limited by their phase modulation ability and illumination polarisation state dependence. These devices rely on planar or twisted nematic liquid crystals to modulate the light, but due to their viscoelastic properties they are inherently slow. Research into the use of the polymer stabilised blue phase has already shown that it can offer high speed phase modulation. However, other chiral nematic orientations are yet to be compared in LCoS devices. In this article, we demonstrate that polymer-stabilised chiral nematic liquid crystal electro-optical effects can offer phase modulation in silicon backplane devices. The uniform standing helix and focal conic textures are shown to be independent of the input light polarisation state and the uniform lying helix is shown to be polarisation dependent. These optical responses are then compared with that of the blue phase to identify a suitable orientation for further development in LCoS technology in order to find a high-speed, full phase modulating material.  相似文献

This work is part of a research project whose final aim is to realise prototypes of bifunctional photochromic and electro-optical devices. The photochrome will be incorporated in films composed by nematic liquid crystals dispersed in a polymeric matrix or in fluid monomer emulsions. To choose suitable photochromic components, the behaviour of some compounds (four naphtho-spiro-indolino-oxazines and a nitromethoxy-spiropyran) was investigated in the components of the matrix (liquid crystals and monomers) and compared with that in organic solvents. The colour-forming and colour-bleaching kinetics were determined. The molecules investigated, while maintaining their photochromic behaviour, generally exhibited a better colorability in liquid crystals and monomers, due to decreasing of the bleaching rate. The results of this work indicate that two of the molecules investigated have the prerequisites of colorability, reversibility and durability to be used in the bifunctional devices. Preliminary tests on the behaviour of a prototype of bifunctional film are reported.  相似文献
