Molecular motions of hydrophobic–hydrophilic water-soluble block copolymers in solution were investigated by high-resolution proton magnetic resonance (NMR). Samples studied include block copolymers of polystyrene–poly(ethylene oxide), polybutadiene–poly(ethylene oxide), and poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide). NMR measurements were carried out varying molecular weight, temperature, and solvent composition. For AB copolymers of polystyrene and poly(ethylene oxide), two peaks caused by the phenyl protons of low-molecular-weight (M?n = 3,300) copolymer were clearly resolved in D2O at 100°C, but the phenyl proton peaks of high-molecular-weight (M?n = 13,500 and 36,000) copolymers were too broad to observe in the same solvent, even at 100°C. It is concluded that polystyrene blocks are more mobile in low-molecular-weight copolymer in water than in high-molecular-weight copolymer in the same solvent because the molecular weight of the polystyrene block of the low-molecular-weight copolymer is itself small. In the mixed solvent D2O and deuterated tetrahydrofuran (THF-d8), two peaks caused by the phenyl protons of the high-molecular-weight (M?n = 36,000) copolymer were clearly resolved at 67°C. It is thought that the molecular motions of the polystyrene blocks are activated by the interaction between these blocks and THF in the mixed solvent.  相似文献

This article discusses an effective route to prepare amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing a poly(ethylene oxide) block and a polyolefin block that includes semicrystalline thermoplastics, such as polyethylene and syndiotactic polystyrene (s‐PS), and elastomers, such as poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐styrene) random copolymers. The broad choice of polyolefin blocks provides the amphiphilic copolymers with a wide range of thermal properties from high melting temperature ~270 °C to low glass‐transition temperature ~?60 °C. The chemistry involves two reaction steps, including the preparation of a borane group‐terminated polyolefin by the combination of a metallocene catalyst and a borane chain‐transfer agent as well as the interconversion of a borane terminal group to an anionic (? O?K+) terminal group for the subsequent ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The overall reaction process resembles a transformation from the metallocene polymerization of α‐olefins to the ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The well‐defined reaction mechanisms in both steps provide the diblock copolymer with controlled molecular structure in terms of composition, molecular weight, moderate molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 2.5), and absence of homopolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The G values of poly(methyl methacrylates) (PMMA), polycarbonates, and a polylactone for γ-radiation were determined by using a computer-assisted GPC as the primary tool for the measurement of the number-average molecular weights M?n. The accuracy and precision of the automated GPC were found to have a normalized standard deviation (σ/M?n) of less than 7%. The G value of PMMA was determined to be essentially independent of molecular weight. For low molecular weight polymers, some nonlinearity in the I/M?n versus dosage plot was observed at low dosage, i.e., about 1 Mrad.  相似文献

The heat of fusion of poly(ethylene oxide) blocks has been measured by DSC on twelve polystyrene–poly(ethylene oxide) multiblock (AB)n copolymers and two ABA triblock copolymers after conditioning at various times and temperatures. Regardless of the length of polystyrene blocks, copolymers with poly(ethylene oxide) blocks with M?n = 404 showed no heat of fusion, those with M?n = 900 almost no peaks, those with M?n = 1960 small broad peaks, and those with M?n = 5650 clearly observable peaks. the greatest heat of fusion measured for block copolymers was 60–70% of the value for hompolymer. Small-angle x-ray patterns are given. The relation between crystal growth and block length is discussed.  相似文献

The crystallization kinetics of a range of fractions of poly(ethylene oxide) are presented and analyzed. It is concluded that deviations from the Avrami equation with exponent of 3 are mainly due to rejection of low molecular weight molecules for the low molecular weight fractions (M?n < 6,000) and to a process of crystal perfecting for the high molecular weight fractions (M?n > 6,000).  相似文献

α-Alkylacrylic acids (RAA's) bearing n-alkyl groups were found to homopolymerize with slower rates than acrylic and methacrylic acids to number-average molecular, weight (M?n) of 104 or above. When the α-substituent was a branched alkyl group, the polymerization rate and M?n decreased further. Reactivities of RAA's in copolymerization were interpreted by steric and resonance effects of the alkyl group using Hancock's steric substituent constant. Comparison of the reactivities of RAA's with those of methyl α-alkylacrylates revealed that replacement with the smaller carboxyl group facilitates polymerization and copolymerization. Preference of co-syndiotactic propagation in the copolymerization of methacrylic acid with styrene changed to random fashion in the copolymerization of the α-higher alkyl derivatives. After methylation with diazomethane, the homopolymers were shown to be thermally less stable than poly(methyl methacrylate). Tg's of poly(methyl α-ethylacrylate) and poly(methyl α-n-propylacrylate) were 57 and 25°C, respectively.  相似文献

Five well-defined polystyrene-block-polyoxyethylene copolymers were synthesized by anionic polymerization for use as stabilizers in the emulsion polymerization of styrene. The size of the blocks and their relative weight ratios to each other were the main variables. The molecular weights of the blocks varied from M?n = 1000–7000 for polystyrene, and M?w = 3000–9000 for polyoxyethylene. The results of the styrene emulsion polymerization with these block copolymers as stabilizers indicate that for efficient anchoring the block length need not be more than 10 monomer units, possibly even less, and that the polyoxyethylene block M?w = 3000 is just as capable of stabilizing the polystyrene particle as the higher molecular weight blocks. A very important factor was found to be the weight ratio of the two blocks: block copolymers with a polyoxyethylene content between 75 and 90 wt % were effective stabilizers for the emulsion polymerization of styrene © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer brush with poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain and polystyrene as the side chain was successfully prepared by a combination of anionic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The glycidol was first protected by ethyl vinyl ether to form 2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether and then copolymerized with ethylene oxide by the initiation of a mixture of diphenylmethylpotassium and triethylene glycol to give the well‐defined polymer poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether); the latter was hydrolyzed under acidic conditions, and then the recovered copolymer of ethylene oxide and glycidol {poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐glycidol) [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)]} with multiple pending hydroxymethyl groups was esterified with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to produce the macro‐ATRP initiator [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)(ATRP). The latter was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene to form the amphiphilic copolymer brushes. The object products and intermediates were characterized with 1H NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared, and size exclusion chromatography in detail. In all cases, the molecular weight distribution of the copolymer brushes was rather narrow (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), and the linear dependence of ln[M0]/[M] (where [M0] is the initial monomer concentration and [M] is the monomer concentration at a certain time) on time demonstrated that the styrene polymerization was well controlled. This method has universal significance for the preparation of copolymer brushes with hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylamide was graft polymerized onto the surface of a biodegradable semicrystalline polyester, poly(ε‐caprolactone). Electron beam irradiation at a dose of 5 Mrad was used to generate initiating species in the polyester. The degradation in vitro at pH 7.4 and 37°C in a phosphate buffer solution was studied for untreated, irradiated and acrylamide‐grafted polymers. In the case of poly(ε‐caprolactone), all materials showed similar behavior in terms of weight loss. No significant decrease in weight was observed up to 40 weeks, after which the loss of weight accelerated. The main differences in degradation behavior were found for the average molecular weights, n and w. Virgin poly(ε‐caprolactone) maintained n and w up to about 40 weeks, whereas the irradiated and grafted poly(ε‐caprolactone) showed similar continuous declines in n and w throughout the degradation period. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The composition and properties of the surface layers of poly(styrene/α-t-butoxy-ω-polyglycidol) [poly(styrene/VB-polyGL)] microspheres synthesized by the radical copolymerization of styrene and α-t-butoxy-ω-vinylbenzyl-polyglycidol (VB-polyGL) macromonomers [number-average molecular weight (Mn) = 950 or 2700] were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, 13C NMR, and the adsorption of human serum albumin and γ-globulins. The number-average diameter of the synthesized microspheres was 220 nm. Their surface layers were rich in polyglycidol, with polyglycidol-to-polystyrene unit ratios of 0.443 (VB-polyGL with Mn = 950) and 0.427 (VB-polyGL with Mn = 2700). In suspensions of poly(styrene/VB-polyGL) particles in D2O, the polymer chains in the polyglycidol-rich surface layers were highly mobile, allowing the registration of polyglycidol 13C NMR spectra with standard procedures for polymer solutions. In these spectra, the signals of the relatively immobile polystyrene segments were absent. The spin–lattice relaxation times (T1) measured for polyglycidol in the microsphere surface layers and for VB-polyGL macromonomers in solution were very close, indicating similar degrees of motion in bound (in particle surface layers) and free (in solution) polyglycidol macromolecules. Studies of protein adsorption revealed that hydrophilic polyglycidol layers were protein-repellent. It was found that longer polyglycidol chains in particle surface layers were more mobile (higher T1 values) and provided better protection against protein adsorption. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The kinetics of γ-radiation-induced free-radical polymerization of styrene were studied over the temperature range 0–50°C at radiation intensities of 9.5 × 104, 3.1 × 105, 4.0 × 105, and 1.0 × 106 rad/hr. The overall rate of polymerization was found to be proportional to the 0.44–0.49 power of radiation intensity, and the overall activation energy for the radiation-induced free-radical polymerization of styrene was 6.0–6.3 kcal/mole. Values of the kinetic constants, kp2/kt and ktrm/kp, were calculated from the overall polymerization rates and the number-average molecular weights. Gelpermeation chromatography was used to determine the number-average molecular weight M?n, the weight-average molecular weight M?w, and the polydispersity ratio M?w/M?n, of the product polystyrene. The polydispersity ratios of the radiation-polymerized polystyrene were found to lie between 1.80 and 2.00. Significant differences were observed in the polydispersity ratios of chemically initiated and radiation-induced polystyrenes. The radiation chemical yield, G(styrene), was calculated to be 0.5–0.8.  相似文献

Chain‐growth condensation polymerization of p‐aminobenzoic acid esters 1 bearing a tri(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether side chain on the nitrogen atom was investigated by using lithium 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) as a base. The methyl ester monomer 1a afforded polymer with low molecular weight and a broad molecular weight distribution, whereas the polymerization of the phenyl ester monomer 1b at ?20 °C yielded polymer with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 2800–13,400) and low polydispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.10–1.15). Block copolymerization of 1b and 4‐(octylamino)benzoic acid methyl ester ( 2 ) was further investigated. We found that block copolymer of poly 1b and poly 2 with defined molecular weight and low polydispersity was obtained when the polymerization of 1b was initiated with equimolar LiHMDS at ?20 °C and continued at ?50 °C, followed by addition of 2 and equimolar LiHMDS at ?10 °C. Spherical aggregates were formed when a solution of poly 1b in THF was dropped on a glass plate and dried at room temperature, although the block copolymer of poly 1b and poly 2 did not afford similar aggregates under the same conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isobutyl propenyl ether [IBPE; CH3CH=CH? OCH2CH(CH3)2] was polymerized with a mixture of hydrogen iodide and iodine (HI/I2 initiator) in n-hexane at ?40°C to yield living polymers with a nearly monodisperse molecular weight distribution (MWD) (M?w/M?n ≈ 1.1). The number-average molecular weight (M?n) of the polymers increased proportionally to IBPE conversion and further increased when a new monomer feed was added to a completely polymerized solution. The M?n was controlled by the initial concentration of hydrogen iodide if the acid was charged in excess over iodine. In polymerization by iodine alone the M?n of the polymers obtained in nonpolar solvents (n-hexane and toluene) also increased with conversion, but their MWD was broader (M?w/M?n = 1.3–1.4) than in the HI/I2-initiated systems under similar conditions. The iodine-initiated polymerization in polar CH2Cl2 solvent, in contrast, led to nonliving polymers with a broad MWD (M?n/M?n = 1.6–1.8) and M?n, independent of conversion. The living polymerization of IBPE was also compared with that of the corresponding isobutyl vinyl ether, to determine the effect of the β-methyl group in IBPE.  相似文献

A slow continuous addition of dichloromethana solutions of α-methylstyrene (α-MeSt) into a dichloromethane solution of 2,5-dichloro-2,5-dimethylhexane (DDH) with BCI3 (initiating system II) prepared in advance resulted, in the temperature range between ?20 and ?40°, in a quasilving polymerization of α-MeSt. At ?20°C and a 100% conversion a polymer with a very narrow molecular weight distribution is formed, M?w/M?n - 1.1. Quasiliving polymerization of α-MeSt has not been achieved with freshly prepared dischloromethane solutions of DDH with BC3 (initiating sytem I), or with solutions of BCI3 alone (initiating system III). Polarity of the polymerization medium affected molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the polymer, and the polydispersity index decreased with decreasing polarity. MWD of the polymer samples were studied by the GPC method, the structure of poly (α-methylstyrene) (Pα-MeSt) was investigated by the 1H-NMR analysis  相似文献

Cationic emulsions of triblock copolymer particles comprising a poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PnBA) central block and polystyrene (PS) outer blocks were synthesized by activator generated by electron transfer (AGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Difunctional ATRP initiator, ethylene bis(2‐bromoisobutyrate) (EBBiB), was used as initiator to synthesize the ABA type poly(styrene‐bn‐butyl acrylate‐b‐styrene) (PS‐PnBA‐PS) triblock copolymer. The effects of ligand and cationic surfactant on polymerizations were also discussed. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to characterize the molecular weight (Mn) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the resultant triblock copolymers. Particle size and particle size distribution of resulted latexes were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The resultant latexes showed good colloidal stability with average particle size around 100–300 nm in diameter. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of copolymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Polyesters of the formula, [(OR)n? O? CO? C(CH3)2? N?N? C(CH3)2? CO]m, where (OR)n are poly(ethylene oxide), Poly(propylene oxide), or PTHF units, were used to prepare block copolymers with styrene. Ester and ether groups were cleaved with HI, NaOCH3, and diisobutylaluminum hydride. The resulting polystyrene is telechelic with two COOH and OH groups, respectively. The number of styrene blocks per polymer molecule is 3–4.  相似文献

3‐Ethyl‐3‐methacryloyloxymethyloxetane (EMO) was easily polymerized by dimethyl 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) as the radical initiator through the opening of the vinyl group. The initial polymerization rate (Rp) at 50 °C in benzene was given by Rp = k[MAIB]0.55 [EMO]1.2. The overall activation energy of the polymerization was estimated to be 87 kJ/mol. The number‐average molecular weight (M?n) of the resulting poly(EMO)s was in the range of 1–3.3 × 105. The polymerization system was found to involve electron spin resonance (ESR) observable propagating poly(EMO) radicals under practical polymerization conditions. ESR‐determined rate constants of propagation (kp) and termination (kt) at 60 °C are 120 and 2.41 × 105 L/mol s, respectively—much lower than those of the usual methacrylate esters such as methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate. The radical copolymerization of EMO (M1) with styrene (M2) at 60 °C gave the following copolymerization parameters: r1 = 0.53, r2 = 0.43, Q1 = 0.87, and e1 = +0.42. EMO was also observed to be polymerized by BF3OEt2 as the cationic initiator through the opening of the oxetane ring. The M?n of the resulting polymer was in the range of 650–3100. The cationic polymerization of radically formed poly(EMO) provided a crosslinked polymer showing distinguishably different thermal behaviors from those of the radical and cationic poly(EMO)s. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Characterization of block size in poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(styrene) (PEO‐b‐PS) block copolymers could be achieved by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS) after scission of the macromolecules into their constituent blocks. The performed hydrolytic cleavage was demonstrated to specifically occur on the targeted ester function in the junction group, yielding two homopolymers consisting of the constitutive initial blocks. This approach allows the use of well‐established MALDI protocols for a complete copolymer characterization while circumventing difficulties inherent to amphiphilic macromolecule ionization. Although the labile end‐group in PS homopolymer was modified by the MALDI process, PS block size could be determined from MS data since polymer chains were shown to remain intact during ionization. This methodology has been validated for a PEO‐b‐PS sample series, with two PEO of number average molecular weight (Mn) of 2000 and 5000 g mol?1 and Mn(PS) ranging from 4000 to 21,000 g mol?1. Weight average molecular weight (Mw), and thus polydispersity index, could also be reached for each segment and were consistent with values obtained by size exclusion chromatography. This approach is particularly valuable in the case of amphiphilic copolymers for which Mn values as determined by liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance might be affected by micelle formation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An efficient introduction of vinyl group into poly (ethylene‐co‐styrene) or poly(ethylene‐co?1‐hexene) has been achieved by the incorporation of 3,3′‐divinylbiphenyl (DVBP) in terpolymerization of ethylene, styrene, or 1‐hexene with DVBP using aryloxo‐modified half‐titanocenes, Cp′TiCl2(O?2,6‐iPr2C6H3) [Cp′ = Cp*, tBuC5H4, 1,2,4‐Me3C5H2], in the presence of MAO cocatalyst, affording high‐molecular‐weight polymers with unimodal distributions. Efficient comonomer incorporations have been achieved by these catalysts, and the content of each comonomer could be varied by its initial concentration charged. The postpolymerization of styrene was initiated from the vinyl group remained in the side chain by treatment with n‐BuLi. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) and poly(ethylene‐g‐methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Commercially available poly(ethylene‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) was converted into ATRP macroinitiators by reaction with chloroacetic acid and 2‐bromoisobutyric acid, respectively, and the pendant‐functionalized polyolefins were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene and methyl methacrylate. In both cases, incorporation of the vinyl monomer into the graft copolymer increased with extent of the reaction. The controlled growth of the side chains was proved in the case of poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) by the linear increase of molecular weight with conversion and low polydispersity (Mw /Mn < 1.4) of the cleaved polystyrene grafts. Both macroinitiators and graft copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 2440–2448, 2000  相似文献
