The bio‐based polyester, poly(ethylene 2,5‐furandicarboxylate) (PEF), was modified by 2,2,4,4‐tetramethyl‐1,3‐cyclobutanediol (CBDO) via copolymerization and a series of copolyesters poly(ethylene‐co‐2,2,4,4‐tetramethyl‐1,3‐cyclobutanediol 2,5‐furandicarboxylate)s (PETFs) were prepared. After their chemical structures and sequence distribution were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR and 13C‐NMR), their thermal, mechanical, and gas barrier properties were investigated in detail. Results showed that when the content of CBDO unit in the copolyesters was increased up to 10 mol%, the completely amorphous copolyesters with good transparency could be obtained. In addition, with the increasing content of CBDO units in the copolyesters, the glass transition temperature was increased from 88.9 °C for PET to 94.3 °C for PETF‐23 and the tensile modulus was increased from 3000 MPa for PEF to 3500 MPa for PETF‐23. The barrier properties study demonstrated that although the introduction of CBDO units would increase the O2 and CO2 permeability of PEF slightly, PECF‐10 still showed better or similar barrier properties compared with those of PEN and PEI. In one word, the modified PEF copolyesters exhibited better mechanical properties, higher glass transition temperature, good barrier properties, and better clarity. They have great potential to be the bio‐based alternative to the popular petroleum‐based poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) when used as the beverage packaging materials. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For as‐extruded amorphous and biaxially orientated polyester films based on poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(ethylene naphthalate), and copolymers containing poly(ethylene terephthalate) and poly(ethylene naphthalate) moieties, permeability, diffusion, and solubility coefficients are interpreted in terms of chain mobility. The influence of polymer morphology is determined by comparison of the data for as‐extruded amorphous sheets and materials produced with different biaxial draw ratios. The crystallinities of the samples were assessed using differential scanning calorimetry and density measurements. Changes in mobility at a molecular level were investigated using dielectric spectroscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The study, in conjunction with our earlier work, leads to the conclusion that the key to understanding differences in gas transport is the difference in local chain motions rather than in free volume. This was illustrated by the permeability results for He, Ar, N2, and O2 in the range of polyesters. However, the permeability of CO2 was found to require alternative explanations because of polymer–penetrant interactions. For biaxially oriented samples, the differences in diffusivity are not only due to differences in local chain motions, but also additional constraints resulting from the increased crystallinity and chain rigidity—which also act to hinder segmental mobility. The effectiveness of the reduction in permeability in the biaxially oriented films is consequently determined by the ability of the polymer chains to effectively align and form crystalline structures. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐4,4′‐bibenzoate) (PETBB55), and poly(ethylene 2,6‐naphthalate) (PEN) were cold‐drawn to achieve uniform extension without crystallization or stress whitening, and oxygen transport properties were studied at temperatures from 10 to 40 °C. Correlation of oxygen solubility and polymer specific volume made it possible to consider the oriented polyester as a one‐phase densified glass. Orientation was viewed as decreasing the amount of excess‐hole free volume and bringing the nonequilibrium polymer glass closer to the equilibrium condition. Between 10 and 40 °C, the amount of excess‐hole free volume in PET decreased as the polymer approached the glass transition temperature. In contrast, temperature changes in this range had little effect on the excess‐hole free volume in PETBB55 and PEN, which were well below their glass transition temperature. Gas diffusion was viewed as discrete jumps of the oxygen molecule between holes of excess‐free volume. The jump length was extracted from the activation energy for diffusion according to a channel‐formation model. The result agreed well with the hole spacing estimated from a simple lattice model using the hole density reported in the literature. Extending the lattice model to estimate the mean excess‐free volume hole radius from the fractional free volume resulted in good correlation with the hole radius obtained from positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic block copolymers provide a unique means for toughening epoxy resins because they can self‐assemble into different inclusion shapes before epoxy curing. The two examples reported here are spherical micelles and vesicles, which form in blends containing epoxy and symmetric or asymmetric poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(ethylene‐alt‐propylene) (PEO–PEP) block copolymer with PEO volume fractions of 0.5 and 0.26, respectively. The vesicles and spherical micelles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), respectively. SAXS data from the spherical micelles were fit to the Percus–Yevick model for a liquid‐like packing of spheres with hard‐core interactions. Mechanical properties of spherical‐micelle‐modified and vesicle‐modified epoxies in the dilute limit are compared. The glass‐transition temperature and Young's (storage) modulus were tested with dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, and compact‐tension experiments were performed to determine the critical plane‐strain energy release rate for fracture. Vesicles were most effective in improving the epoxy fracture resistance. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 2996–3010, 2001  相似文献

Novolac epoxy resins cured with novolac resin, novolac acetate resin, novolac butyrate resin, and novolac phenylacetate resin named as EP, EPA, EPB, and EPP, respectively, were prepared. Their physical aging behavior at a Tg‐30 °C (30 °C below glass‐transition temperature) was examined by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The ortho‐positronium annihilation lifetime τ3 variation extent of EP is less apparent than that of the other three esterified samples during physical aging. The time dependence of ops intensity I3 agreed with the Kohlrausch‐Williams‐Watts (KWW) equation. The relaxation time (τ0) and nonexponential parameter were calculated. The free volume and enthalpy relaxation rate characterized by the reciprocal of τ0 and ?ΔH/?logt, respectively, exhibit the same order—EPP > EPB > EPA > EP. These results suggest that the extend and rate of relaxation are not only related to the frozen free volume produced by quenching but also significantly influenced by segmental mobility of the network that attributed to the side‐group flexibility and their interaction with networks. This work also supports the fact that side‐group flexibility and the free‐volume fraction and distribution act in concert to control the water‐diffusion behavior in epoxy networks. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Solid polymeric films (plates) commonly exhibit only partial recovery after being subjected to a bending moment for some finite duration. This phenomenon, generally called bending recovery or core‐set, has been described and successfully modeled in past studies using the viscoelastic plate bending theory. In this study, the viscoelastic theory of core‐set curl was extended to account for physical aging effects during the bending recovery test. The contribution of physical aging was incorporated into the model through the effective time theory and assuming a thermorheologically simple behavior. The model was tested against long‐term core‐set data for a biaxially oriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film under ambient conditions and was then used to map the effect of sample age on the evolution of core‐set curl over long times. The predictions of the model agreed favorably with the data, and the results underscored the strong retarding effect of physical aging on the rate of acquisition of core‐set curl in PET film at ambient temperature. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Exposure to extended periods of sub‐Tg temperatures causes physical changes in the molecular structure of epoxy resins and epoxy‐based materials to occur. These physical aging mechanisms include the reduction in free volume and changes to the molecular configuration. As a result, mechanical, thermodynamical, and physical properties are affected in ways that can compromise the reliability of epoxy‐based engineering components and structures. In this review, the physical changes in the molecular structure of epoxies are described, and the influence of these changes on the bulk‐level response is detailed. Specifically, the influence of physical aging on the quasistatic mechanical properties, viscoelasticity, fracture toughness, thermal expansion coefficient, volume relaxation, enthalpy relaxation, endothermic peak temperature, fictive temperature, and moisture/solvent absorption capability is reviewed. Also discussed are relationships between relaxation functions, crosslink density, composite reinforcement, and epoxy/copolymer blending and the physical aging response of epoxies. Finally, the concepts of thermal and mechanical rejuvenation are discussed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2011  相似文献

A fast, one pot, solvent‐free and metal‐free synthesis of poly‐ε‐caprolactone and poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers is reported. Copolymers with different molar mass, different hydrophilic to lipophilic balance, high degree of conversion and narrow molar mass dispersity have been obtained by organocatalyzed ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in presence of mono‐ or diol‐poly(ethylene oxide) as initiator and fumaric acid as catalyst. A new biocompatible and environmental friendly purification method is presented, exploiting the upper critical solution temperature of these class of copolymers in ethanol. The phase diagrams of the synthesized copolymers in ethanol are also reported. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 2992–2999  相似文献

The effects of physical aging on the solubility, diffusivity, and permeability of propane and n-butane in a hydrocarbon-based disubstituted polyacetylene, poly(4-methyl-2-pentyne) (PMP), were studied. As the relative pressure of propane and n-butane increased, the solubility of both hydrocarbons increased. Like other glassy polymers, the sorption isotherms for propane and n-butane in all PMP films were concave to the relative pressure axis, indicating dual-mode sorption behavior. The diffusion of propane and n-butane in PMP followed typical Fickian diffusion in a plane sheet. The propane diffusivity in both the unaged and aged films increased with increasing concentration of propane sorbed in the film. The n-butane diffusivity in aged films also increased with increasing n-butane concentration. However, unaged films showed the opposite behavior: the diffusivity decreased with increasing n-butane concentration. These diffusion phenomena are a consequence of the interplay between thermodynamic and mobility factors. The permeabilities of propane and n-butane decreased monotonically with increasing penetrant concentration, similar to the behavior observed in other common glassy polymers. The relaxation of the nonequilibrium excess free volume in PMP films induced the decrease in both solubility and diffusivity. As a result, the permeability of propane and n-butane in PMP decreased upon physical aging. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 2407–2418, 2004  相似文献

The temperature dependence of the mean size of local free volumes in an amorphous atactic (aPP) and a semicrystalline syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP), and an amorphous ethylene‐propylene copolymer (E‐co‐P48) has been studied. Pressure‐volume‐temperature (PVT) experiments were performed for aPP, from which the hole fraction h of the Simha‐Somcynsky theory and the number density of holes were estimated. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe here the first example of the synthesis of 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid) for use as a water‐soluble drag reducing agent, by applying Cu(0)‐mediated polymerization technique. High molecular weight 4‐arm star poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (Mn = 3.0–9.0 × 105 g mol?1) was first synthesized using 4,4′‐oxybis(3,3‐bis(2‐bromopropionate)butane as an initiator and a simple Cu(0)/TREN catalyst system. Then, 4‐arm star poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) were subjected to hydrolysis using trifluoroacetic acid resulting in water‐soluble 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid). Drag reduction test rig analysis showed 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid) to be effective as a drag reducing agent with drag reduction of 24.3%. Moreover, 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid) exhibited superior mechanical stability when compared with a linear poly(acrylic acid) and commercially available drag reducing polymers; Praestol and poly(ethylene oxide). The linear poly(acrylic acid), Praestol, and poly(ethylene oxide) all showed a large decrease in drag reduction of 8–12% when cycled 30 times through the drag reduction test rig while, in contrast, 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid) demonstrated much higher mechanical stability. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene‐alt‐propylene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEP‐PEO) diblock copolymers were synthesized and added at 4 wt % to 2,2‐bis[4‐(2‐hydroxy‐3‐methacryloxypropoxy)phenyl]propane (BisGMA), a monomer that cures using free radical chemistry. In separate experiments, poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) was combined as a secondary monomer with BisGMA and the monomers were loaded with 4 wt % PEP‐PEO. The diblock copolymers self‐assembled into well‐dispersed spherical micelles with PEP cores and PEO coronas. No appreciable change in the final extent of cure of the thermosets was caused by the addition of diblock copolymer, except in the case of BisGMA, where the addition of the block copolymer increased extent of cure by 12%. Furthermore, the extent of cure was increased by 29% and 37% with the addition of 25 and 50 wt % PEGDMA, respectively. Elastic modulus and fracture resistance were also determined, and the values indicate that the addition of block copolymers does not significantly toughen the thermoset materials. This finding is surprising when compared with the large increase in fracture resistance seen in block copolymer‐modified epoxies, and an explanation is proposed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polycarbonate (PC) was blended with acrylic impact modifiers (AIMs). The effects of modifiers weight fraction on the Izod impact strength and yield strength of PC/AIM blends were investigated. The samples with 4% modifiers were aged under the Tg of PC in an air‐circulating oven, and the effects of aging time on impact strength, yield strength, modulus, elongation at break, post yield stress drop (PYSD) values, and morphology of fracture surface were investigated. The effects of aging time on the shape of stress–strain curve were also investigated. The aged samples were heat‐treated over the Tg of PC to erase the effects of physical aging. It was found that the drop of impact strength caused by physical aging can be recovered, the increment of yield strength and PYSD value caused by physical aging can only be partly recovered, and the heat‐treatment over the Tg of PC caused further increment of modulus. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Understanding and controlling physical aging below the glass transition temperature (Tg) is very important for the long‐term performance of plastic parts. In this article, the effect of grafted silica nanoparticles on the physical aging of polycarbonate (PC) below the Tg is studied by using the evolution of the enthalpy relaxation and the yield stress. The nanocomposites were found to reach a thermodynamic equilibrium faster than unfilled PC, implying that physical aging is accelerated in presence of grafted nanosilica particles. The Tool‐Narayanaswamy‐Moynihan model shows that the aging is accelerated by the grafted silica nanoparticles, but the molecular mechanism responsible for physical aging remains unaltered. Furthermore, dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the kinetics of physical aging can be related to a free volume distribution or a local attraction‐energy distribution as a result of the change in mobility of the polymer chain. Finally, a qualitative equivalence is observed in the physical aging followed by both the enthalpy relaxation and yield stress. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. In this comparative study, the effect of carbon black (CB) on the UV aging characteristics of poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA) was investigated. EVA, containing 13% vinyl acetate (VA), and poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate)/carbon black mixture (EVA/CB), containing 13% VA and 1% CB, were aged by means of UV light with a wavelength in the vicinity of 259 nm, in air, up to 400 hr. Sol‐gel analyses were made to determine the percentage gelation of both virgin and aged samples. FT‐IR measurements were performed to follow the chemical changes which took place in the samples during aging. Dynamic and isothermal thermogravimetry studies were performed for determination of the thermal stabilities of virgin and aged samples. Sol‐gel analysis results showed that EVA itself has a tendency to form a gel under UV irradiation. EVA/CB, however, becomes a gel to a smaller extent, comparatively, under the same conditions. As a result of FT‐IR measurements, some oxidation products such as ketone, lactone and vinyl species were observed through UV ageing of EVA and EVA/CB. Thermal analysis experiments exhibited that the thermal stabilities of EVA and EVA/CB decreased, to a similar extent through UV aging. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Thermal‐processing structure‐property relationships for polyetherimide (PEI), poly(4,4′‐oxydiphenylene pyromellitimide) (POPPI), and phenylethynyl‐terminated imide (PETI‐5) composite matrices are reported from a fundamental perspective. For thermoplastic PEI, deformation and failure depend primarily on free volume as evidenced by moisture‐absorption, mechanical‐property, and mass‐density changes as a function of annealing. The deformation of POPPI can be divided into the following three regimes as a function of annealing temperature: (1) physical aging‐induced glassy state free‐volume decreases, (2) thermally activated microvoid collapse, and (3) chemical degradation. In the case of PETI‐5, macroscopic defects, free volume, and polymer morphology control deformation. The effects of residual crystallinity on deformation are reported, and it is shown that mechanical toughness can be significantly decreased upon annealing below the glass‐transition temperature. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Biodegradable, amphiphilic, diblock poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG), triblock poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐b‐PEG‐b‐PCL), and star shaped copolymers were synthesized by ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether or poly(ethylene glycol) or star poly(ethylene glycol) and potassium hexamethyldisilazide as a catalyst. Polymerizations were carried out in toluene at room temperature to yield monomodal polymers of controlled molecular weight. The chemical structure of the copolymers was investigated by 1H and 13C NMR. The formation of block copolymers was confirmed by 13C NMR and DSC investigations. The effects of copolymer composition and molecular structure on the physical properties were investigated by GPC and DSC. For the same PCL chain length, the materials obtained in the case of linear copolymers are viscous whereas in the case of star copolymer solid materials are obtained with low Tg and Tm temperatures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of physical aging on the electret properties before corona charging of three amorphous polymers, polyetherimide (PEI), poly(phenylene ether) (PPE), and polystyrene (PS), as well as with blends of PPE and PS, was investigated. The degree of aging was monitored by determining the enthalpy relaxation Δh using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The electret performance was evaluated by isothermal potential decay (ITPD) at elevated temperatures and by thermal stimulated discharge (TSD) measurements. It was demonstrated that physical aging below the glass transition temperature substantially improves the electret performance of amorphous polymers by reducing the free volume and thus hindering charge motion. As an example, the performance of nonaged PEI was improved by physical aging at 200 °C for 4 days from 18 to 95% retained charge after 24 h at 120 °C. A similar beneficial influence of physical aging on the charge storage capability was achieved using blends of PPE with PS. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel pH and reduction dual‐sensitive biodegradable polymeric micelles for efficient intracellular delivery of anticancer drugs were prepared based on a block copolymer of methyloxy‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly[(benzyl‐l ‐aspartate)‐co‐(N‐(3‐aminopropyl) imidazole‐l ‐aspartamide)] [mPEG‐SS‐P(BLA‐co‐APILA), MPBA] synthesized by a combination of ring‐opening polymerization and side‐chain reaction. The pH/reduction‐responsive behavior of MPBA was observed by both dynamic light scattering and UV–vis experiments. The polymeric micelles and DOX‐loaded micelles could be prepared simply by adjusting the pH of the polymer solution without the use of any organic solvents. The drug release study indicated that the DOX‐loaded micelles showed retarded drug release in phosphate‐buffered saline at pH 7.4 and a rapid release after exposure to weakly acidic or reductive environment. The empty micelles were nontoxic and the DOX‐loaded micelles displayed obvious anticancer activity similar to free DOX against HeLa cells. Confocal microscopy observation demonstrated that the DOX‐loaded MPBA micelles can be quickly internalized into the cells, and effectively deliver the drugs into nuclei. Thus, the pH and reduction dual‐responsive MPBA polymeric micelles are an attractive platform to achieve the fast intracellular release of anticancer drugs. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The dimensional stability of thermoplastics is characterized by their tensile compliance D(t,σ,T) as a function of time t, stress σ, and temperature T. Creep retardation times are controlled by the free volume available for underlying molecular (segmental) motions. Tensile deformation of polymeric materials, whose Poisson ratio is smaller than 0.5, is accompanied by volume dilatation that can be identified with an increase in available free volume. Consequently, a steady increase in strain with time during tensile creep experiments accounts for shortening of the retardation times. The superposition of as‐received tensile compliance curves is difficult because any point of a curve requires a shift factor along the time axis that differs from those of other points. In this article, tensile creep at a constant stress and temperature is viewed as a non‐iso free‐volume process. A procedure is proposed to transform as‐received data to a pseudo‐iso free‐volume state that eliminates this deficiency and permits construction of a generalized compliance curve for the pseudo‐iso free‐volume state. This curve can be used for calculation of real‐time‐dependent compliance for any selected stress in the range of reversible deformations. As the superposed curve can be generated with several short‐term creep tests (e.g., 100 min) for a series of stresses, the proposed procedure saves experimental time. The effects of physical aging on tensile compliance (observed previously by other researchers) are interpreted in terms of the proposed approach in appendix A . © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
