Negatively charged sodium auride clusters, NanAun- (n = 1-3), have been investigated experimentally using photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Well-resolved electronic transitions were observed in the photoelectron spectra of NanAun- (n = 1-3) at several photon energies. Very large band gaps were observed in the photoelectron spectra of the anion clusters, indicating that the corresponding neutral clusters are stable closed-shell species. Calculations show that the global minimum of Na2Au2- is a quasi-linear species with Cs symmetry. A planar isomer of D2h symmetry is found to be 0.137 eV higher in energy. The two lowest energy isomers of Na3Au3- consist of three-dimensional structures of Cs symmetry. The global minimum of Na3Au3- has a bent-flake structure lying 0.077 eV below a more compact structure. The global minima of the sodium auride clusters are confirmed by the good agreement between the calculated electron detachment energies of the anions and the measured photoelectron spectra. The global minima of neutral Na2Au2 and Na3Au3 are found to possess higher symmetries with a planar four-membered ring (D2h) and a six-membered ring (D3h) structure, respectively. The chemical bonding in the sodium auride clusters is found to be highly ionic with Au acting as the electron acceptor.  相似文献

Density functional calculations within the generalized gradient approximation have been used to investigate the lowest energy electronic and geometric structures of neutral, cationic, and anionic Pd(n) (n=1-7) clusters in the gas phase. In this study, we have examined three different spin multiplicities (M=1, 3, and 5) for different possible structural isomers of each neutral cluster. The calculated lowest energy structures of the neutral clusters are found to have multiplicities, M=1 for Pd(1), Pd(3), Pd(5), Pd(6), and Pd(7), while M=3 for Pd(2) and Pd(4). We have also determined the lowest energy states of cationic and anionic Pd(n) (n=1-7) clusters, formed from the most stable neutral clusters, in three spin multiplicities (M=2, 4, and 6). Bond length, coordination number, binding energy, fragmentation energy, bond dissociation energy, ionization potential, electron affinity, chemical hardness, and electric dipole moment of the optimized clusters are compared with experimental and other theoretical results available in the literature. Based on these criteria, we predict the four-atom palladium cluster to be a magic-number cluster.  相似文献

The geometry, electronic configurations, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and stability of the structural isomers of boron phosphide clusters have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT). CCSD(T) calculations show that the lowest‐energy structures are cyclic (IIt, IVs) with Dnh symmetry for dimers and trimers. The caged structure for B4P4 lie higher in energy than the monocyclic structure with D2d symmetry (VIs). The B–P bond dominates the structures for many isomers, so that one preferred dissociation channel is loss of the BP monomer. The hybridization and chemical bonding in the different structures are also discussed. Comparisons with boron nitride clusters, the ground state structures of BnPn (n = 2, 3) clusters are analogous to those of their corresponding BnNn (n = 2, 3) counterparts. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The vibrational spectroscopy of the electronically closed-shell (Al 2O 3) n (AlO) (+) cations with n = 1-4 is studied in the 530-1200 cm (-1) range by infrared predissociation spectroscopy of the corresponding ion-He atom complexes in combination with quantum chemical calculations. In all cases we find, assisted by a genetic algorithm, global minimum structures that differ considerably from those derived from known modifications of bulk alumina. The n = 1 and n = 4 clusters exhibit an exceptionally stable conical structure of C 3 v symmetry, whereas for n = 2 and n = 3, multiple isomers of lower symmetry and similar energy may contribute to the recorded spectra. A blue shift of the highest energy absorption band is observed with increasing cluster size and attributed to a shortening of Al-O bonds in the larger clusters. This intense band is assigned to vibrational modes localized on the rim of the conical structures for n = 1 and n = 4 and may aid in identifying similar, highly symmetric structures in larger ions.  相似文献

45 isomers of TinNm (n + m = 5, 6) clusters, including linear, some planar and some stero configurations, have been predicted by density functional theory method. For five-atom clusters Ti3N2 and Ti2N3, the most stable structures are trigonal bipyramid in D3h symmetry, and for TiaN cluster, the isomer with one nitrogen atom occupying the center of quasi-tetrahedron is the most stable. In the isomers of Ti4N2 and Ti3N3, the planar networks are more stable, but for Ti2N4, the six-membered ring configuration is the most favorable. Most linear structures can form weak-strong bonds alternately with higher energy. As regards to planar structures, the more Ti-N bonds are formed, the more stable they will be; for stero closed polyhedral isomers, their energies are lower.  相似文献

Theoretical studies on the Ge n Si m clusters have been carried out using advanced ab initio approaches. The lowest energy isomers were determined for the clusters with compositions n+m=2-5. All possible isomers arising due to permutations of Ge and Si atoms were investigated. The L-shaped structure for the trimers, tetragonal with diagonal bond for tetramers, and a trigonal bipyramid for pentamers represent the energy optimized ground state geometries. The bonding analyses revealed that the trimers and tetramers are stabilized through multicenter pi bonding. In pentamers, this stabilizing factor is eliminated due to the further cluster growth. The ionization of clusters does not change their geometrical characteristics. The agreement of the calculated ionization and atomization energies with those obtained from the mass spectrometric studies (through estimated appearance potential) validated the reported structures of the clusters. The bonding properties of these species are discussed using their molecular orbital characteristics and analysis of natural bond orbital population data.  相似文献

The geometric, spectroscopic, and electronic properties of neutral yttrium‐doped gold clusters AunY (n=1–9) are studied by far‐infrared multiple photon dissociation (FIR‐MPD) spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Comparison of the observed and calculated vibrational spectra allows the structures of the isomers present in the molecular beam to be determined. Most of the isomers for which the IR spectra agree best with experiment are calculated to be the energetically most stable ones. Attachment of xenon to the AunY cluster can cause changes in the IR spectra, which involve band shifts and band splittings. In some cases symmetry changes, as a result of the attachment of xenon atoms, were also observed. All the AunY clusters considered prefer a low spin state. In contrast to pure gold clusters, which exhibit exclusively planar lowest‐energy structures for small sizes, several of the studied species are three‐dimensional. This is particularly the case for Au4Y and Au9Y, while for some other sizes (n=5, 8) the 3D structures have an energy similar to that of their 2D counterparts. Several of the lowest‐energy structures are quasi‐2D, that is, slightly distorted from planar shapes. For all the studied species the Y atom prefers high coordination, which is different from other metal dopants in gold clusters.  相似文献

The geometric and electronic structures of the Pbn+ clusters (n=2-15) have been investigated and compared with neutral clusters. The search for several low-lying isomers was carried out under the framework of the density functional theory formalism using the generalized gradient approximation for the exchange correlation energy. The wave functions were expanded using a plane wave basis set and the electron-ion interactions have been described by the projector augmented wave method. The ground state geometries of the singly positively charged Pbn+ clusters showed compact growth pattern as those observed for neutrals with small local distortions. Based on the total energy of the lowest energy isomers, a systematic analysis was carried out to obtain the physicochemical properties, viz., binding energy, second order difference in energy, and fragmentation behavior. It is found that n=4, 7, 10, and 13 clusters are more stable than their neighbors, reflecting good agreement with experimental observation. The chemical stability of these clusters was analyzed by evaluating their energy gap between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals and adiabatic ionization potentials. The results revealed that, although Pb13 showed higher stability from the total energy analysis, its energy gap and ionization potential do not follow the trend. Albeit of higher stability in terms of binding energy, the lower ionization potential of Pb13 is interesting which has been explained based on its electronic structure through the density of states and electron shell filling model of spherical clusters.  相似文献

The growth mechanisms of small cationic silicon clusters containing up to 11 Si atoms, exohedrally doped by V and Cu atoms, are described. We find that as dopants, V and Cu follow two different paths: while V prefers substitution of a silicon atom in a highly coordinated position of the cationic bare silicon clusters, Cu favors adsorption to the neutral or cationic bare clusters in a lower coordination site. The different behavior of the two transition metals becomes evident in the structures of Si(n)M(+) (n = 4-11 for M = V, and n = 6-11 for M = Cu), which are investigated by density functional theory and, for several sizes, confirmed by comparison with their experimental vibrational spectra. The spectra are measured on the corresponding Si(n)M(+)·Ar complexes, which can be formed for the exohedrally doped silicon clusters. The comparison between experimental and calculated spectra indicates that the BP86 functional is suitable to predict far-infrared spectra of these clusters. In most cases, the calculated infrared spectrum of the lowest-lying isomer fits well with the experiment, even when various isomers and different electronic states are close in energy. However, in a few cases, namely Si(9)Cu(+), Si(11)Cu(+), and Si(10)V(+), the experimentally verified isomers are not the lowest in energy according to the density functional theory calculations, but their structures still follow the described growth mechanism. The different growth patterns of the two series of doped Si clusters reflect the role of the transition metal's 3d orbitals in the binding of the dopant atoms.  相似文献

Monte Carlo simulated annealing strategies, carried out on four different potential energy surfaces, are applied to benzene-cyclohexane clusters, BCn, n=3-7, 12, to identify low-energy isomers and to trace the evolution of structures as a function of cluster size. Initial structures are first heated to ensure randomization, and subsequent annealing yields optimized rigid, low-energy clusters. Five major structural isomers are identified for BC3: one assumes the form of a symmetric, modified sandwich; the remaining four lack general symmetry, assuming distorted tetrahedral arrangements. For BC4 and larger clusters, the number of low-temperature isomers is large. It is, nevertheless, feasible to classify isomers into groups based on structural similarities. The evolution of BCn structures as a function of cluster size is observed to follow one of two primary paths: The first maximizes benzene-cyclohexane interactions and places benzene in or near the BCn cluster center; the competing path maximizes cyclohexane-cyclohexane interactions and distances benzene from the cluster's center of mass. Results for BC3 and BC4 are discussed with reference to experimental results and models previously applied to interpret benzene-argon cluster spectra.  相似文献

The structure and energetics of the ring isomers of C(4n+2) (n=3-5) carbon clusters were studied by using coupled-cluster singles and doubles excitation theory to overcome the vast differences existing in the literature. The results obtained in the present study clearly indicate that C(14), C(18), and C(22) carbon rings have bond-length and bond-angle alternated acetylenic minimum energy structures. Contrarily, density functional theory calculations were unable to predict these acetylenic-type structures and they ended up with the cumulenic structures. It is found from the coupled-cluster studies that the lowest-energy ring isomer for the first two members of C(4n+2) series is a bond-angle alternated cumulenic D((2n+1)h) symmetry structure while the same for the remaining members is a bond-length and bond-angle alternated C((2n+1)h) symmetry structure. In C(4n+2) carbon rings, Peierls-type distortion, transformation from bond-angle alternated to bond-length alternated minimum energy structures, occurs at C(14) carbon ring.  相似文献

A complete study on the evolution of structures and the variation of the energy properties of MPdn−1 (M = Ni and Cu; n = 2-13) clusters is presented. The study was performed employing auxiliary density functional theory. The obtained results were compared with the results of Pdn clusters studied with the same methodology. For each cluster size, several structures were studied to determine the lowest energy structures. The initial structures for the geometry optimization were taken along ab initio Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics trajectories. Different potentials energy surfaces were studied. All cluster structures were fully optimized without any symmetry restriction. Stable structures, frequencies, spin multiplicities, averaged bond lengths, spin density plots, different energy properties, dipole and magnetic moments as well as charge transfers are reported. This investigation indicates that the palladium clusters doped with a Ni atom are the most stable and potentially the most chemical active ones.  相似文献

We have used photoionization efficiency spectroscopy to determine ionization potentials (IP) of the niobium-carbide clusters, Nb3C(n) (n = 1-4) and Nb4C(n) (n = 1-6). The Nb3C2 and Nb4C4 clusters exhibit the lowest IPs for the two series, respectively. For clusters containing up to four carbon atoms, excellent agreement is found with relative IPs calculated using density functional theory. The lowest energy isomers are mostly consistent with the development of a 2 x 2 x 2 face-centered cubic structure of Nb4C4. However, for Nb3C4 a low-lying isomer containing a molecular C2 unit is assigned to the experimental IP rather than the depleted 2 x 2 x 2 nanocrystal isomer. For Nb4C5 and Nb4C6, interpretation is less straightforward, but results indicate isomers containing molecular C2 units are the lowest in energy, suggesting that carbon-carbon bonding is preferred when the number of carbon atoms exceeds the number of metal atoms. A double IP onset is observed for Nb4C3, which is attributed to ionization from the both the lowest energy singlet state and a meta-stable triplet state. This work further supports the notion that IPs can be used as a reliable validation for the geometries of metal-carbide clusters calculated by theory.  相似文献

The electronic structures and stabilities of cationic MPb12+ clusters (M = B, Al, Ga, In, and Tl) with 50 valence electrons are investigated within density functional theory. It is shown that, at the B3LYP/cc-pVDZ(-PP) and BPW91/cc-pVDZ(-PP) levels of theory, the structures of MPb12+ with icosahedra (I(h)) symmetry are energetically favorable, and their high stabilities may arise from the closed-shell nature of the pi subsystems which are subject to the 2(N(pi + 1)2 rule with N(pi = 1). In addition, the possessing of large nucleus-independent chemical shifts of the five kinds of clusters reflects the common aromatic character of these clusters. From the comparison of our studies on the binding energies and the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gaps, the cluster AlPb12+ has higher stability than the others and this is consistent with the recent mass-spectrometric discovery of Al-doped Pb(n)+ clusters, in which AlPb12+ is highly abundant. The same methods are used to search for the structures of the neutral MPb12 clusters. The calculations reveal that the most stable geometries of the BPb12 and GaPb12 clusters have I(h) symmetry, the AlPb12 and InPb12 clusters have T(h) symmetry, and the TlPb12 cluster has C5v symmetry. Furthermore, the vertical ionization potentials of the neutral MPb12 clusters are smaller than that of some alkali atoms, indicating that the neutral MPb12 clusters possess superalkali character.  相似文献

Extensive semiempirical calculations of the hexaanions of IPR (isolated pentagon rule) and non-IPR isomers of C(68)-C(88) and IPR isomers of C(90)-C(98) followed by DFT calculations of the lowest energy structures were performed to find the carbon cages that can provide the most stable isomers of M(3)N@C(2n) clusterfullerenes (M = Sc, Y) with Y as a model for rare earth ions. DFT calculations of isomers of M(3)N@C(2n) (M = Sc, Y; 2n = 68-98) based on the most stable C(2n)(6-) cages were also performed. The lowest energy isomers found by this methodology for Sc(3)N@C(68), Sc(3)N@C(78), Sc(3)N@C(80), Y(3)N@C(78), Y(3)N@C(80), Y(3)N@C(84), Y(3)N@C(86), and Y(3)N@C(88) are those that have been shown to exist by single-crystal X-ray studies as Sc(3)N@C(2n) (2n = 68, 78, 80), Dy(3)N@C(80), and Tb(3)N@C(2n) (2n = 80, 84, 86, 88) clusterfullerenes. Reassignment of the carbon cage of Sc(2)@C(76) to the non-IPR Cs: 17490 isomer is also proposed. The stability of nitride clusterfullerenes was found to correlate well with the stability of the empty 6-fold charged cages. However, the dimensions of the cage in terms of its ability to encapsulate M(3)N clusters were also found to be an important factor, especially for the medium size cages and the large Y(3)N cluster. In some cases the most stable structures are based on the different cage isomers for Sc(3)N and Y(3)N clusters. Up to the cage size of C(84), non-IPR isomers of C(2n)(6-) and M(3)N@C(2n) were found to compete with or to be even more stable than IPR isomers. However, the number of adjacent pentagon pairs in the most stable non-IPR isomers decreases as cage size increases: the most stable M(3)N@C(2n) isomers have three such pairs for 2n = 68-72, two pairs for n = 74-80, and only one pair for n = 82, 84. For C(86) and C(88) the lowest energy IPR isomers are much more stable than any non-IPR isomer. The trends in the stability of the fullerene isomers and the cluster-cage binding energies are discussed, and general rules for stability of clusterfullerenes are established. Finally, the high yield of M(3)N@C(80) (Ih) clusterfullerenes for any metal is explained by the exceptional stability of the C(80)(6-) (Ih: 31924) cage, rationalized by the optimum distribution of the pentagons leading to the minimization of the steric strain, and structural similarities of C(80) (Ih: 31924) with the lowest energy non-IPR isomers of C(760(6-), C(78)(6-), C(82)(6-), and C(84)(6-) pointed out.  相似文献

The authors present theoretical results describing the adsorption of H2 and H2S molecules on small neutral and cationic gold clusters (Au(n)((0/+1)), n=1-8) using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation. Lowest energy structures of the gold clusters along with their isomers are considered in the optimization process for molecular adsorption. The adsorption energies of H2S molecule on the cationic clusters are generally greater than those on the corresponding neutral clusters. These are also greater than the H2 adsorption energies on the corresponding cationic and neutral clusters. The adsorption energies for cationic clusters decrease with increasing cluster size. This fact is reflected in the elongations of the Au-S and Au-H bonds indicating weak adsorption as the cluster grows. In most cases, the geometry of the lowest energy gold cluster remains planar even after the adsorption. In addition, the adsorbed molecule gets adjusted such that its center of mass lies on the plane of the gold cluster. Study of the orbital charge density of the gold adsorbed H2S molecule reveals that conduction is possible through molecular orbitals other than the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. The dissociation of the cationic Au(n)SH2+ cluster into Au(n)S+ and H2 is preferred over the dissociation into Au(m)SH2+ and Au(n-m), where n=2-8 and m=1-(n-1). H2S adsorbed clusters with odd number of gold atoms are more stable than neighboring even n clusters.  相似文献

The structural and electronic characteristics of the Si(n)C(2)H(2), n=3,4,5, clusters are studied by ab initio calculations based on coupled cluster and density functional theory using the hybrid B3LYP functional. It is demonstrated that all three clusters are structurally and electronically homologous to the corresponding isoelectronic organometallic carboranes C(2)B(n)H(n+2). This homology, which is in full agreement with the analogy of Si(6) (2-) and B(6)H(6) (2-) demonstrated recently by the author [J. Chem. Phys. 127, 014314 (2007)], includes not only the ground states but also the lower-lying isomers as well. These lowest lying isomers can be obtained by ortho, para, and meta substitutions from the corresponding Si(n) (2-), n=3,4,5, dianions. The energetic ordering of the low-lying isomers is in full agreement with the known valence and topological charge stability rules developed for carboranes. The hydrogenated clusters are much more stable than their nonhydrogenated counterparts. It is suggested that Si(3)C(2)H(2), Si(4)C(2)H(2), and Si(5)C(2)H(2), which can be probably found in interstellar space, are special examples of a general class of silicon-carbon clusters of the form Si(n)C(2)H(2), with analogous properties and similarities to the corresponding carboranes C(2)B(n)H(n+2). It is furthermore illustrated that the lowest energy structures of the Si(n)C(2) clusters can be obtained through a systematic and straightforward procedure from the Si(n)C(2)H(2) clusters. The present results could hopefully make possible the exploitation of the rich borane and carborane chemistry for the design and development of novel silicon and silicon-carbon composite nanomaterials.  相似文献

The geometric and electronic structures of Si(n), Si(n)-, and PSi(n-1) clusters (2 < or = n < or = 13) have been investigated using the ab initio molecular orbital theory formalism. The hybrid exchange-correlation energy functional (B3LYP) and a standard split-valence basis set with polarization functions (6-31+G(d)) were employed to optimize geometrical configurations. The total energies of the lowest energy isomers thus obtained were recalculated at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. Unlike positively charged clusters, which showed similar structural behavior as that of neutral clusters [Nigam et al., J. Chem. Phys. 121, 7756 (2004)], significant geometrical changes were observed between Si(n) and Si(n)- clusters for n = 6, 8, 11, and 13. However, the geometries of P substituted silicon clusters show similar growth as that of negatively charged Si(n) clusters with small local distortions. The relative stability as a function of cluster size has been verified based on their binding energies, second difference in energy (Delta2 E), and fragmentation behavior. In general, the average binding energy of Si(n)- clusters is found to be higher than that of Si(n) clusters. For isoelectronic PSi(n-1) clusters, it is found that although for small clusters (n < 4) substitution of P atom improves the binding energy of Si(n) clusters, for larger clusters (n > or = 4) the effect is opposite. The fragmentation behavior of these clusters reveals that while small clusters prefer to evaporate monomer, the larger ones dissociate into two stable clusters of smaller size. The adiabatic electron affinities of Si(n) clusters and vertical detachment energies of Si(n)- clusters were calculated and compared with available experimental results. Finally, a good agreement between experimental and our theoretical results suggests good prediction of the lowest energy isomeric structures for all clusters calculated in the present study.  相似文献
