Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm‐b‐PEO‐b‐PNIPAAm) triblock copolymer was synthesized via the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer/macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthate (RAFT/MADIX) process with xanthate‐terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the macromolecular chain transfer agent. The successful synthesis of the ABA triblock copolymer inspired the preparation of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PNIPAAm‐b‐PEO) copolymer networks with N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as the crosslinking agent with the similar approach. With the RAFT/MADIX process, PEO chains were successfully blocked into poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) networks. The unique architecture of PNIPAAm‐b‐PEO networks allows investigating the effect of the blocked PEO chains on the deswelling and reswelling behavior of PNIPAAm hydrogels. It was found that with the inclusion of PEO chains into the PNIPAAm networks as midblocks, the swelling ratios of the hydrogels were significantly enhanced. Furthermore, the PNIPAAm‐b‐PEO hydrogels displayed faster response to the external temperature changes than the control PNIPAAm hydrogel. The accelerated deswelling and reswelling behaviors have been interpreted based on the formation of PEO microdomains in the PNIPAAm networks, which could act as the hydrophilic tunnels to facilitate the diffusion of water molecules in the PNIPAAm networks. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three series of semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks, based on crosslinked poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPA) and 1 wt % nonionic or ionic (cationic and anionic) linear polyacrylamide (PAAm), were synthesized to improve the mechanical properties of PNIPA gels. The effect of the incorporation of linear polymers into responsive networks on the temperature‐induced transition, swelling behavior, and mechanical properties was studied. Polymer networks with four different crosslinking densities were prepared with various molar ratios (25:1 to 100:1) of the monomer (N‐isopropyl acrylamide) to the crosslinker (methylenebisacrylamide). The hydrogels were characterized by the determination of the equilibrium degree of swelling at 25 °C, the compression modulus, and the effective crosslinking density, as well as the ultimate hydrogel properties, such as the tensile strength and elongation at break. The introduction of cationic and anionic linear hydrophilic PAAm into PNIPA networks increased the rate of swelling, whereas the presence of nonionic PAAm diminished it. Transition temperatures were significantly affected by both the crosslinking density and the presence of linear PAAm in the hydrogel networks. Although anionic PAAm had the greatest influence on increasing the transition temperature, the presence of nonionic PAAm caused the highest dimensional change. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks reinforced with cationic and nonionic PAAm exhibited higher tensile strengths and elongations at break than PNIPA hydrogels, whereas the presence of anionic PAAm caused a reduction in the mechanical properties. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reducibly degradable hydrogels of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) were synthesized by the combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and click chemistry. The alkyne‐pending copolymer of PNIPAM or PDMAEMA was obtained through RAFT copolymerization of propargyl acrylate with NIPAM or DMAEMA. Bis‐2‐azidyl‐isobutyrylamide of cystamine (AIBCy) was used as the crosslinking reagent to prepare reducibly degradable hydrogels by click chemistry. The hydrogels exhibited temperature or pH stimulus‐responsive behavior in water, with rapid response, high swelling ratio, and reproducible swelling/shrinkage cycles. The loading and release of ceftriaxone sodium proved the feasibility of the hydrogels as the stimulus‐responsive drug delivery system. Furthermore, the presence of disulfide linkage in AIBCy favored the degradation of hydrogels in the reductive environment. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the effect of the level of crosslinking on the properties of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogels was investigated in terms of their lower critical solution temperature (LCST), interior morphology, equilibrium swelling, and deswelling and swelling kinetics. The thermal analysis showed that PNIPAAm hydrogels, having a wide range of crosslinking levels, exhibited almost the same LCSTs, and this was different from what the conventional theory would have predicted. Scanning electron micrographs revealed that the interior network structure of the PNIPAAm matrix became more porous with an increase in the level of crosslinking. This more porous matrix provided numerous water channels for water diffusion in or out of the matrix and, therefore, an improved response rate to the external temperature changes during the deswelling process and the swelling process. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA)/PNIPA interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) was synthesized and characterized. In comparison with conventional PNIPA hydrogels, the shrinking rate of the IPN hydrogel increased when gels, swollen at 20 °C, were immersed in 50 °C water. The phase‐transition temperature of the IPN gel remained unchangeable because of the same chemical constituent in the PNIPA gel. The reswelling kinetics were slower than those of the PNIPA hydrogel because of the higher crosslinking density of the IPN hydrogel. The IPN hydrogel had better mechanical strength because of its higher crosslinking density and polymer volume fraction. The release behavior of 5‐fluorouracil (5‐Fu) from the IPN hydrogel showed that, at a lower temperature, the release of 5‐Fu was controlled by the diffusion of water molecules in the gel network. At a higher temperature, 5‐Fu inside the gel could not diffuse into the medium after a burst release caused by the release of the drug on the surface of the gel. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new type of glucose‐responsive hydrogel with rapid response to blood glucose concentration change at physiological temperature has been successfully developed. The polymeric hydrogel contains phenylboronic acid (PBA) groups as glucose sensors and thermo‐responsive poly (N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) groups as actuators. The response rate of the hydrogel to environmental glucose concentration change was significantly enhanced by introducing grafted poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐3‐acrylamidophenylboronic acid) [poly(NIPAM‐co‐AAPBA)] side chains onto crosslinked poly(NIPAM‐co‐AAPBA) networks for the first time. The synthesized comb‐type grafted poly(NIPAM‐co‐AAPBA) hydrogels showed satisfactory equilibrium glucose‐responsive properties, and exhibited much faster response rate to glucose concentration change than normal type crosslinked poly(NIPAM‐co‐AAPBA) hydrogels at physiological temperature. Such glucose‐responsive hydrogels with rapid response rate are highly attractive in the fields of developing glucose‐responsive sensors and self‐regulated drug delivery systems. 3‐Acryloxypropylhepta(3,3,3‐trifluoropropyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was synthesized and used as a modifier to improve the thermal response rates of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel. The radical copolymerization among N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), the POSS macromer and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide was performed to prepare the POSS‐containing PNIPAM cross‐linked networks. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the POSS‐containing PNIPAM networks displayed the enhanced glass transition temperatures (Tg's) and improved thermal stability when compared with plain PNIPAM network. The POSS‐containing PNIPAM hydrogels exhibited temperature‐responsive behavior as the plain PNIPAM hydrogels. It is noted that with the moderate contents of POSS, the POSS‐containing PNIPAM hydrogels displayed much faster response rates in terms of swelling, deswelling, and re‐swelling experiments than plain PNIPAM hydrogel. The improved thermoresponsive properties of hydrogels have been interpreted on the basis of the formation of the specific microphase‐separated morphology in the hydrogels, that is, the POSS structural units in the hybrid hydrogels were self‐assembled into the highly hydrophobic nanodomains, which behave as the microporogens and promote the contact of PNIPAM chains and water. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The comb‐type grafted hydrogels poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐g‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM‐g‐PNIPAM) and poly(acrylic acid)‐g‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PAAc‐g‐PNIPAM) were prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. A macromolecular chain‐transfer agent was prepared first. Then, hydrogels were obtained by a reaction with a comonomer (N‐isopropylacrylamide or acrylic acid) in the presence of N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker. The equilibrium swelling ratios and the swelling and deswelling kinetics of PNIPAM‐g‐PNIPAM were measured. The effects of the chain length and amount on the swelling behavior were investigated. The deswelling mechanism was illustrated. Meanwhile, the PAAc‐g‐PNIPAM hydrogel was used to confirm the versatility of this novel method. It was prepared in an alcoholic medium, whereas hydrogen‐bonding complexes formed in 1,4‐dioxane, which was chosen as the reaction medium for the PNIPAM‐g‐PNIPAM hydrogel. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel semi‐IPN nanocomposite hydrogel (CMC/PNIPA/Clay hydrogel) based on linear sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) crosslinked by inorganic clay was prepared. The structure and morphology of these hydrogels were investigated and their swelling and deswelling kinetics were studied in detail. TEM images showed that the clay was substantially exfoliated to form nano‐dimension platelets dispersed homogeneously in the hydrogels and acted as a multifunctional crosslinker. The CMC/PNIPA/Clay hydrogels swell faster than the corresponding PNIPA/Clay hydrogels at pH 7.4, whereas they swell slower than the PNIPA/Clay hydrogels at pH 1.2. The CMC/PNIPA/Clay nanocomposite hydrogels showed much higher deswelling rates, which was ascribed to more passway formed in these hydrogels for water to diffuse in and out. The deswelling process of the hydrogels could be approximately described by the first‐order kinetic equation and the deswelling rate decreased with increasing clay content. The mechanical properties of the CMC/PNIPA/Clay nanocomposite hydrogels were analyzed based on the theory of rubber elasticity. It was found that with increasing clay content, the effective crosslink chain density, ve, increased whereas the molecular weight of the chains between crosslinks Mc decreased. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Temperature sensitive poly{N‐[3‐(dimethylaminopropyl)]methacrylamide‐co‐acrylamide} [P(DMAPMA‐co‐AAm)] hydrogels were prepared by the free‐radical crosslinking copolymerization of corresponding monomers in water with N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide as the crosslinker, ammonium persulfate as the initiator, and N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine as the activator. The swelling equilibrium of the P(DMAPMA‐co‐AAm) hydrogels was investigated as a function of temperature in aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate and the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide. In pure water, regardless of the amount of N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide, the P(DMAPMA‐co‐AAm) hydrogels showed a discontinuous phase transition between 30 and 36 °C. However, the transition temperature changed from discontinuous to continuous with the addition of surfactants; this was ascribed to the conversion of nonionic P(DMAPMA‐co‐AAm) hydrogels into polyelectrolyte hydrogels due to the binding of surfactants through hydrophobic interactions. Additionally, the concentrations of free sodium dodecyl sulfate and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide ions were measured at different temperatures by conductometry, and it was found that the electric conductivity of the P(DMAPMA‐co‐AAm)–surfactant systems depended strongly on the swelling ratio; most notably, it changed drastically near the phase‐transition temperature of the P(DMAPMA‐co‐AAm) hydrogel. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, we report a series of poly(itaconic acid‐co‐acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide) (poly(IA‐co‐AAc‐co‐AAm)) hydrogels via frontal polymerization (FP). FP starts on the top of the reaction mixture with aid of heating provided from soldering iron gun. Once polymerization initiated, no further energy is required to complete the process. The influences of IA/AAc weight ratios on frontal velocities, temperatures, and conversions on the reaction time are thoroughly investigated and discussed where the amount of AAm monomer remains constant. Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis, and the swelling measurement are applied to characterize the as‐synthesized poly(IA‐co‐AAc‐co‐AAm) hydrogels. Interestingly, the swelling ratios of the hydrogels are changed with different IA/AAc contents, and the maximum swelling ratios are ~4439% in water. SEM images describe highly porous morphologies and explain good swelling capabilities. Moreover, the poly(IA‐co‐AAc‐co‐AAm) hydrogels exhibit superior pH‐responsive ability. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 2214–2221  相似文献

Macroporous, temperature‐sensitive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogels were synthesized with poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs; molecular weight = 2000–6000) as the pore‐forming agents. The influence of the molecular weight and PEG content on the responsive kinetics of these macroporous hydrogels was investigated. The PEG‐modified PNIPAAm hydrogels were characterized by the swelling ratio, deswelling–reswelling kinetics, Fourier transform infrared, and differential scanning calorimetry. The morphology of these hydrogels was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy. The prepared macroporous hydrogels exhibited some unique properties in comparison with the gels with low molecular weight PEGs (molecular weight < 2000) as the pore‐forming agents. In addition, a preliminary study on the controlled release of bovine serum albumin from these macroporous hydrogels was carried out. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the facile synthesis of poly(VI‐co‐MAA) superabsorbent polyampholytic hydrogels (VI = N‐vinylimidazole, MAA = methacrylic acid) via plasma‐ignited frontal polymerization (PIFP). On igniting the top surface of the reactants with air plasma, frontal polymerization occurred and poly(VI‐co‐MAA) hydrogels were obtained within minutes. The preparation parameters were investigated, along with swelling capacity, morphology, and chemical structures of poly(VI‐co‐MAA) hydrogels. Interestingly, the hydrogels are superabsorbent in water and show ampholytic characteristic toward pH. Moreover, the hydrogels are able to capture cationic dyes through electrostatic interaction, offering the potential for further development as dye adsorbents for water purification. In addition, nanocomposite hydrogels were obtained by embedding quantum dots (carbon dots or CdS nanocrystals) into the polymer matrix, which endows the nanocomposite hydrogels with favorable fluorescence and potential applications in bioimaging and biosensing. The results indicate that FP can be applied as an alternative means for facile synthesis of multifunctional hydrogels with additional efficiency and energy‐saving. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Poly(N‐acryloyl‐N′‐ethyl piperazine‐co‐N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels were prepared by thermal free‐radical copolymerization of N‐acryloyl‐N′‐ethyl piperazine (AcrNEP) and N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in solution using N, N′‐methylene bisacrylamide as the crosslinking agent. The gels were responsive to changes in external stimuli such as pH and temperature. The pH and temperature responsive character of the gels was greatly dependent on the monomer content, namely AcrNEP and NIPAM, respectively. The gels swelled in acidic (pH 2) and de‐swelled in basic (pH 10) solutions with a response time of 60 min. With increase in temperature from 23 to 80 °C the swelling of the gels decreased continuously and this effect was different in acidic and basic solutions. The temperature dependence of equilibrium water content of the gels was evaluated by the Gibbs–Helmholtz equation. Detailed analysis of the swelling properties of these new gels in relation to molecular heterogeneity in acidic (pH 2) and basic (pH 10) solutions were performed. Water transport property of the gels was studied gravimetrically. In acidic solution, the diffusion process was non‐Fickian (anomalous) while in basic solution, the diffusion was quasi‐Fickian. The effect was more evident in solution of pH 2 than in pH 10. Various structural parameters of the gels such as number‐average molar mass between crosslink (Mc), the crosslink density (ρc), and the mesh size (ξ) were evaluated. The mesh sizes of the hydrogels were between 64 and 783 Å in the swollen state in acidic solution and 20 and 195 Å in the collapsed state in basic solution. The mesh size increased between three to four times during the pH‐dependent swelling process. The amount of unbound water (free water) and bound water of the gels was also evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Soft tissues, such as fat and skin, present high flexibility and are capable of withstanding large deformation in various functions. Hydrogels that can resemble the mechanical performance of soft tissue are unique and widely demanded. In this study, micellar hydrogels based on biocompatible poly(l ‐glutamic acid) (PLGA) were designed with the enhanced capacity to bear large deformation. Amphipathic triblock copolymer poly(ethylene glycol) acrylate‐co‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐co‐poly (ethylene glycol) acrylate (APEG‐PCL‐APEG) with two terminal double bonds was synthesized and self‐assembled into micelles. At the same time, graft copolymers, poly(l ‐glutamic acid)‐g‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (PLGA‐g‐HEMA) with double bonds were synthesized. APEG‐PCL‐APEG micelles and PLGA‐g‐HEMA were mixed to construct micellar hydrogel via radical polymerization. The crystalline structure and hydrophobic aggregation of copolymers (APEG‐PCL‐APEG) were found to associate with PCL molecular weight. Due to the hydrophobic stress dissipation and crystalline structure of the micelles, the softness and toughness of hydrogels were promoted, exhibiting a 25% increase in ultimate strain. Moreover, the micellar hydrogels were able to load proteins with long‐term retention. In addition, under dynamic mechanical stimulation, the release of proteins could be accelerated. Besides, the micellar hydrogels also supported rabbit adipose‐derived stem cells (rASCs) growth, thus exhibiting the potential toward soft tissue engineering. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The synthesis and characterization of thermoresponsive hydrogels on the basis of N‐isopropylacrylamide (IPAAm) copolymers crosslinked with biodegradable poly(amino acids) are described. This hydrogel was prepared with two kinds of reactive IPAAm‐based copolymers containing poly(amino acids) as the side‐chain groups and activated ester groups. We introduced the graft chains by decarboxylation polymerization of amino acid N‐carboxyanhydrides initiated from lateral amino groups in the PIPAAm copolymer. The hydrogels easily crosslinked with degradable poly(amino acid) chains by only mixing the copolymer aqueous solutions. The gelling method in this study would provide some of the following innovative features: (1) no necessary removal of unreacted monomers and so forth, (2) simpler loading of drugs into the hydrogels (only mixing when gelling), and (3) easier insertion into the body. On the basis of the swelling ratio measurement of the hydrogel, large volume changes dependent on temperature changes were observed. Moreover, the enzymatic temperature‐dependent degradation was confirmed. The results suggested that these hydrogels could be used for an injectable or implantable matrix of temperature‐modulated drug release. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, a novel thermo‐sensitive poly(N‐acryloylglycinates) was prepared in order to get a potential drug release carrier. The corresponding monomers and the polymers were characterized with Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) and 1H NMR. The thermo‐sensitivity of the poly(N‐acryloylglycinates) was evaluated by measuring their lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) in water, inorganic salt solution, and different pH solutions. The results indicated that poly(N‐acryloylglycine methyl ester) (NAGME) and poly(N‐acryloylglycine ethyl ester) (NAGEE) exhibit a reversible thermo‐sensibility in their aqueous solutions at 61.5 and 12.5°C, respectively. However, no thermo‐sensitive behavior of poly(N‐acryloylglycine propyl ester) (NAGPE) was found due to its over hydrophobicity. The swelling studies on hydrogels were carried out at different temperatures, in different pH, and inorganic salt solutions. The hydrogels showed a remarkable phase transition at about 35°C with changing temperature. The release rate of caffeine from the thermo‐sensitive hydrogel was apparently decreased as the crosslinker content increased and temperature decreased. Seventy five percent caffeine from the polymeric hydrogel with 5% NMBA (N, N‐methylenebis(acrylamide)) was released at room temperature within 240 min, whereas 95.4% caffeine diffused into the medium at 37°C. Hydrogels responsive to both temperature and pH have been synthesized in the forms of sequential interpenetrating networks (IPNs) of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and sodium acrylate (SA) and compared with the crosslinked random copolymers of N‐isopropylacrylamide and SA. Whereas the stimuli‐sensitive behaviors of copolymer hydrogels were strongly dependent on the ionic SA contents, the IPN hydrogels exhibited independent swelling and thermal behaviors of each network component. The sequences and media in the synthesis of IPNs influenced the swelling capacities of the IPNs, but not the temperature or pH ranges at which the swelling changes occurred. In IPNs, a more expanded primary gel network during the synthesis of the secondary network contributed to the better swelling of the final IPNs. Both the swelling and thermal behaviors of the IPNs suggest that poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) and poly(sodium acrylate) are phase separated regardless of their synthesis conditions. The presence of the poly(sodium acrylate) network did not influence the temperature or the extent of phase transition of the poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) network in the IPNs, but did improve the thermal stability of the IPNs. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of an ionic hydrogels composed of N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylamide (DEAEMA), N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (VP), and itaconic acid were synthesized by free‐radical cross‐linking copolymerization in water–ethanol mixture by using N,N‐methylenebis(acrylamide) as the cross‐linker, ammonium persulfate as the initiator, and N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylenediamine as the activator. The swelling behaviors of these hydrogels were analyzed in buffer solutions at various pH. It was observed that the swelling behavior of cross‐linked ionic poly(N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylamide‐coN‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) [P(DEAEMA/VP)] hydrogels at different pH agreed with the modified Flory–Rehner equation based on the affine network model and the ideal Donnan theory. The swelling process in buffer solutions at various pH was found to be Fickian‐type diffusion. The pH‐reversibility and on–off switching properties of the P(DEAEMA/VP) hydrogels may be considered as good candidate to design novel drug‐delivery system. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The strategy for in situ chemical gelation of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐hydroxylethyl methacrylate) [P(NIPAAm‐co‐HEMA)]‐based polymers was demonstrated. Two types of new P(NIPAAm‐co‐HEMA) derivatives with alkyne and azide pendant groups, respectively, were prepared. When the solutions of the two derivatives were mixed together, a crosslinking reaction, a type of Huisgen's 1,3‐dipolar azide‐alkyne cycloaddition, in the presence of Cu(I) catalyst occurs. The morphology, equilibrium swelling ratio, swelling kinetics, and temperature response kinetics of the in situ gelated hydrogels were studied. In comparison with the conventional PNIPAAm hydrogel, because of the spatial hindrance of polymeric chains, the resulted hydrogels had a macroporous structure as well as a fast shrinking rate. The strategy described here presents a potential alternative to the traditional synthesis techniques for the in situ formation of thermoresponsive hydrogels. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
