Formation constants of copper(II), zinc(II), calcium(II) and gadolinium(III) with N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyiminopropionyl) propane-1,3-diamine (L2) have been studied at 25 degrees C and an ionic strength of 0.15 mol dm(-3). The reasonably high formation constants of the copper with this ligand are due to the ease with which the metal ion deprotonates the amide moieties. The square-planar coordination of L2 towards copper as predicted from UV-visible data may also account for the high selectivity of L2 towards the metal ion. Octanol/water partition coefficients of Cu(II)-L2 complexes indicate that although these complexes are largely hydrophilic, approximately 1.86% of the [CuL2H(-1)] species goes into the octanol layer and hence may promote dermal absorption of copper with a calculated penetration rate of 1.24 x 10(-5) cm h(-1). The [CuL2H(-1)] complex which predominates at pH 7.4 is a poor mimic of native copper-zinc superoxide dismutase. Blood-plasma simulation studies predict that, despite the high concentration of zinc and calcium in vivo, L2 is able to increase the low-molecular-mass fraction of copper. Biodistribution experiments using 64Cu-labelled [CuL2H(-1)] indicate an initial high uptake of this species in the liver, but it is predominantly excreted through the renal system.  相似文献

Neutral dimeric metallocyclic complexes of type [M(2)(L(1))(2)B(n)] (where M = cobalt(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II), L(1) is the doubly deprotonated form of a 1,3-aryl linked bis-beta-diketone ligand of type 1,3-bis(RC(O)CH(2)C(O))C(6)H(4) (R=Me, n-Pr, t-Bu) and B is pyridine (Py) or 4-ethylpyridine (EtPy)) have been synthesised, adding to similar complexes already reported for copper(II). New lipophilic ligand derivatives with R = octyl or nonyl were also prepared for use in solvent extraction experiments. Structural, electrochemical and solvent extraction investigations of selected metal complex systems from the above series are reported, with the X-ray structures of [Co(2)(L(1))(2)(Py)(4)] x 2.25CHCl(3) x 0.5H(2)O (R=Pr), [Co(2)(L(1))(2)(EtPy)(4)] (R=t-Bu), [Ni(2)(L(1))(2)(EtPy)(4)] (R=t-Bu), [Zn(2)(L(1))(2)(EtPy)(2)] (R=Me) and [Zn(2)(L(1))(2)(EtPy)(4)] (R=t-Bu) being presented. The electrochemistry of H(2)L(1) (R=t-Bu) and of [Fe(2)(L(1))(3)], [Co(2)(L(1))(2)(Py)(4)], [Ni(2)(L(1))(2)(Py)(4)], [Cu(2)(L(1))(2)] and [Zn(2)(L(1))(2)(Py)(2)] has been examined. Oxidative processes for the complexes are dominantly irreversible, but several examples of quasireversible behaviour were observed and support the assignment of an anodic process, seen between +1.0 and +1.6 V, as a metal-centred oxidation. The reduction processes for the respective metal complexes are not simple, and irreversible in most cases. Solvent extraction studies (water/chloroform) involving variable concentrations of metal, bis-beta-diketone and heterocyclic base have been performed for cobalt(II) and zinc(II) using a radiotracer technique to probe the stoichiometries of the extracted species in each case. Synergism was observed when 4-ethylpyridine was added to the bis-beta-diketone ligand in the chloroform phase. Competitive extraction studies show a clear uptake preference for copper(II) over cobalt(II), nickel(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II).  相似文献

Cobalt(II), nickel(II), and copper(II) (1, 2, and 3) complexes of the dianionic form of the bis(phenolate) ligand N,N-bis(3,4-dimethyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-N',N'-dimethylethylenediamine (H2L) have been synthesized by electrochemical oxidation of the appropriate metal in an acetonitrile solution of the ligand. When copper is used as the anode, the addition of 1,10-phenanthroline to the electrolytic phase gave rise to a different compound [CuL]2.2CH3CN (4). The compounds [CoL]2.2CH3CN (1), [Ni2L2(H2O)].H2O (2), [CuL]2.3H2O (3), and [CuL]2.2CH3CN (4) were characterized by microanalysis, IR, electronic spectroscopy, FAB mass spectrometry, magnetic measurements and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures show that the complexes have a dinuclear structure. In compounds 1, 3, and 4, two metal ions are coordinated by the two amine nitrogens and the two phenol oxygen atoms of a deprotonated pendant phenol ligand, with one phenolic oxygen atom from ligand acting as a bridge. In compounds 1 and 3, each metal center has a geometry that is closest to trigonal bipyramidal. Magnetic susceptibility data for both compounds show an antiferromagnetic coupling with 2J = -15 cm(-1) for the cobalt(II) complex and a strong antiferromagnetic coupling with 2J = -654 cm(-1) for the copper(II) complex. However, in 4 the geometry around the metal is closer to square pyramidal and the compound shows a lower antiferromagnetic coupling (2J = -90 cm(-1)) than in 3. The nickel atoms in the dimeric compound 2 are hexacoordinate. The NiN2O4 chromophore has a highly distorted octahedral geometry. In this structure, a dianionic ligand binds to one nickel through the two amine nitrogen atoms and the two oxygen atoms and to an adjacent nickel via one of these oxygen atoms. The nickel atoms are linked through a triple oxygen bridge involving two phenolic oxygens, each from a different ligand, and an oxygen atom from a water molecule. The two nickel ions in 2 are ferromagnetically coupled with 2J = 19.8 cm(-1).  相似文献

Schiff base tetraazamacrocyclic ligand, L (C(40)H(28)N(4)) and its complexes of types, [MLX(2)] and [CuL]X(2) (M=Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II); X=Cl(-), NO(3)(-)) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, mass, (1)H NMR, IR, UV-vis, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductance data. An octahedral geometry has been proposed for all the complexes except the copper(II) complexes which have a square planar environment. The reducing power of the Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes have been checked and compared. The ligand (L) and its complexes have also been screened against different fungi and bacteria in vitro.  相似文献

Template condensation of 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde S-methylisothiosemicarbazone with pentane-2,4-dione and triethyl orthoformate at elevated temperatures resulted in metal complexes of the type M(II)L, where M = Ni and Cu and H(2)L = a novel tetradentate ligand. These complexes are relevant to the active site of the copper enzymes galactose oxidase and glyoxal oxidase. Demetalation of Ni(II)L with gaseous hydrogen chloride in chloroform afforded the metal-free ligand H(2)L. Then by the reaction of H(2)L with Zn(CH(3)COO)(2)·2H(2)O in a 1:1 molar ratio in 1:2 chloroform/methanol, the complex Zn(II)L(CH(3)OH) was prepared. The three metal complexes and the prepared ligand were characterized by spectroscopic methods (IR, UV-vis, and NMR spectroscopy), X-ray crystallography, and DFT calculations. Electrochemically generated one-electron oxidized metal complexes [NiL](+), [CuL](+), and [ZnL(CH(3)OH)](+) and the metal-free ligand cation radical [H(2)L](+?) were studied by EPR/UV-vis-NIR and DFT calculations. These studies demonstrated the interaction between the metal ion and the phenoxyl radical.  相似文献

With the aim of an improved understanding of the metal-complexation properties of alicyclic β-amino acid stereoisomers, and their peptides, the complex equilibria and modes of coordination with copper(II) of L-phenylalanine (F) derivatives of cis/trans-2-aminocyclohexanecarboxylic acid (c/tACHC), i.e. the dipeptides F-c/tACHC and c/tACHC-F, were investigated by a combination of CW and pulsed EPR methods. For the interpretation of the experimental data, DFT quantum-chemical calculations were carried out. Simulation of a pH-dependent series of room-temperature CW-EPR spectra revealed the presence of EPR-active complexes ([Cu(aqua)](2+), [CuL](+), [CuLH(-1)], [CuLH(-2)](-), and [CuL(2)H(-1)](-)), and an EPR-inactive species ([Cu(2)L(2)H(-3)](-)) in aqueous solutions for all studied cases. [CuLH](2+) was included in the equilibrium model for the c/tACHC-F-copper(II) systems, and [CuL(2)], together with two coordination isomers of [CuL(2)H(-1)](-), were also identified in the F-tACHC-copper(II) system. Comparison of the complexation properties of the diastereomeric ligand pair F-(1S,2R)-ACHC and F-(1R,2S)-ACHC did not reveal significant differences. Considerably lower formation constants were obtained for the trans than for the cis isomers for both the F-c/tACHC and the c/tACHC-F pairs in the case of [CuLH(-1)] involving tridentate coordination by the amino, the deprotonated peptide, and the carboxylate groups. A detailed structural analysis by pulsed EPR methods and DFT calculations indicated that there was no significant destabilization for the complexes of the trans isomers. The lower stability of their complexes was explained by the limitation that only the conformer with donor groups in equatorial-equatorial ring positions can bind to copper(II), whereas both equatorial-axial conformers of the cis isomers are capable of binding. From a consideration of the proton couplings obtained with X-band (1)H HYSCORE, (2)H exchange experiments, and DFT, the thermodynamically most stable cyclohexane ring conformer was assigned for all four [CuLH(-1)] complexes. For the F-cACHC case, the conformer did not match the most stable conformer of the free ligand.  相似文献

A new potentially octadentate N2O6 Schiff base ligand, H2L derived from the condensation of 2,2′-(1,1′-binaphthyl-2,2′-diylbis(oxy))dianiline and o-vanillin, along with its copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes, is synthesized and has been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV–vis, 1H and 13C NMR spectra, as well as conductivity measurements. H2L forms mononuclear complexes of 1:1 (metal:ligand) stoichiometry with Cu(II) and Zn(II), and conductivity data confirm the non-electrolyte nature of these complexes. The [ZnL] and [CuL] complexes display very different solid-state structures, as determined by X-ray crystallography. While the [ZnL] complex has a distorted octahedral geometry about the metal, the [CuL] complex displays a distorted square planar geometry about the copper, with long Cu–O(ether) distances of 2.667 Å.  相似文献

A tetra-nuclear, star-shaped hetero-metallic copper(II)-manganese(II) complex, [{CuL(H(2)O)}(2)(CuL)Mn](ClO(4))(2) (1) has been synthesized by reacting the "complex as ligand" [CuL] with Mn(ClO(4))(2) where H(2)L is the tetradentate di-Schiff base derived from 1,3-propanediamine and 2-hydroxyacetophenone. Upon treatment with the polyatomic anions azide, cyanate, or thiocyanate in methanol medium, complex 1 transforms into the corresponding trinuclear species [(CuL)(2)Mn(N(3))(2)] (2), [(CuL)(2)Mn(NCO)(2)] (3) and [(CuL)(2)Mn(NCS)(2)] (4). All four complexes have been structurally and magnetically characterized. In complex 1 the central Mn(II) ion is encapsulated by three terminal [CuL] units through the formation of double phenoxido bridges between Mn(II) and each Cu(II). In complexes 2-4 one of the CuL units is replaced by a couple of terminal azide, N-bonded cyanate or N-bonded thiocyanate ions respectively and the central Mn(II) ion is connected to two terminal Cu(II) ions through a double asymmetric phenoxido bridge. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements show the presence of moderate ferrimagnetic exchange interactions in all the cases mediated through the double phenoxido bridges with J values (H = -JS(i)S(i + 1)) of -41.2, -39.8 and -12.6 cm(-1) (or -40.5 and -12.7 cm(-1) if we use a model with two different exchange coupling constants) for the tetranuclear MnCu(3) cluster in compound 1 and -20.0, -17.3 and -32.5 cm(-1) for the symmetric trinuclear MnCu(2) compounds 2-4. These ferrimagnetic interactions lead to spin ground states of 1 (5/2 - 3*1/2) for compound 1 and 3/2 (5/2 - 2*1/2) for compounds 2-4.  相似文献

Novel zinc(II), copper(II), and cobalt(II) complexes of the Schiff base derived from 2‐hydroxy‐1‐naphthaldehyde and D, L ‐selenomethionine were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, electronic spectra, conductance measurements, magnetic measurements and powder XRD. The analytical data showed the composition of the metal complex to be ML(H2O), where L is the Schiff base ligand and M = Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II). IR results confirmed the tridentate binding of the Schiff base ligand involving azomethine nitrogen, naphthol oxygen and carboxylato oxygen atoms. 1H NMR spectral data of lithium salt of the Schiff base ligand [Li(HL)] and ZnL(H2O) agreed with the proposed structures. The conductivity values of complexes between 12.50 and 15.45 S cm2 mol?1 in DMF suggested the presence of non‐electrolyte species. The powder XRD studies indicated that Co(II) complex is amorphous, whereas Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes are crystalline. The results of antibacterial and antifungal screening studies indicated that Li(HL) and its metal complexes are active, but CuL(H2O) is most active among them. The ligand binding preferences of a series of potentially pentadentate pyridylbis(aminophenol) ligands were explored. In addition to the previously reported ligands 2,2'-(2-methyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-diyl)bis(azanediyl)bis(methylene)diphenol (H(2)L(1)) and 6,6'-(2-methyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-diyl)bis(azanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenol) (H(2)L(1-tBu)), four new ligands were synthesized: 6,6'-(2-methyl-2(pyridine-2-yl)propane-1,3-diyl)bis(azanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(2,4-dibromophenol) (H(2)L(1-Br)), 6,6'-(2-methyl-2(pyridine-2-yl)propane-1,3diyl)bis(azanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(2-methoxyphenol) (H(2)L(1-MeO)), 2,2'-(2-methyl-2(pyridine-2-yl)propane-1,3diyl)bis(azanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(4-nitrophenol) (H(2)L(1-NO2)), and 2,2'-(2-phenylpropane-1,3-diyl)bis(azanediyl)bis(methylene)diphenol (H(2)L(2)). These ligands, when combined with copper(II) salts and base, form either tricopper(II) species or monocopper(II) species depending on the nucleophilicity of the phenol groups in the ligands. All copper complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, and spectroscopic methods in solution. The ligands in trimeric complexes [{CuL(1)(CH(3)CN)}(2)Cu](ClO(4))(2) (1), [{CuL(1)Cl}(2)Cu] (1a), and [{CuL(2)(CH(3)CN)}(2)Cu](ClO(4))(2) (1b) and monomeric complex [CuL(1-tBu)(CH(3)OH)] (2) coordinate in a tetradentate mode via the amine N atoms and the phenolato O atoms. The pyridyl groups in 1, 1a, and 2 do not coordinate, but instead are involved in hydrogen bonding. Monomeric complexes [CuL(1-Br)] (3a), [CuL(1-NO2)] (3b), and [CuL(1-MeO)Na(CH(3)OH)(2)]ClO(4) (3c) have their ligands coordinated in a pentadentate mode via the amine N atoms, the phenolato O atoms, and the pyridyl N atom. The differences in tetradentate vs pentadentate coordination preferences of the ligands correlate to the nucleophilicity of the phenolate donor groups, and coincide with the electrochemical trends for these complexes.  相似文献

A new tridentate ONS ligand, H2L, has been synthesized by condensing thenoyltrifluoroacetone(4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-2,4butaneanedione) with S-benzyldithiocarbazate and its structure determined by X-ray diffraction. In the solid state, the Schiff base exists as the ketoamine-thioketo tautomer but in solution and in the presence of copper(II), it converts to the enol-thiol form and deprotonates to give copper(II) complexes of formula, [CuL] and [CuLL1] (L = doubly deprotonated form of the ligand; L1 = py, bipy or phen] which have been characterized by magnetic, spectroscopic, and X-ray diffraction studies. An X-ray crystallographic analysis shows that [CuL(py)] has a square-planar geometry with the ligand coordinated to the copper(II) center via the enolate oxygen, the azomethinic nitrogen and the thiolate sulfur, the fourth coordination position being occupied by pyridine. The [CuL(bipy)] complex is five-coordinate with a structure close to square-pyramidal in which the Schiff base acts as a doubly deprotonated tridentate ONS ligand and bipy is bidentate.  相似文献

The coordination behaviour of a new thiosemicarbazone Schiff-base building block, N-{2-([4-N-ethylthiosemicarbazone]methyl)phenyl}-p-toluenesulfonamide, H2L1 (1), incorporating a bulky tosyl group, towards Mn II, Fe II, Co II, Ni II, Cu II, Zn II, Cd II, Ag I, Sn II, and Pb II has been investigated by means of an electrochemical preparative procedure. Most metal complexes of L1 have the general formula [M(L1)]2.nX (M=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb; n=0-4, X=H2O or CH3CN), as confirmed by the structure of [Pb(L1)]2 (15), in which the lone pair on lead is stereochemically active. This lead(II) complex shows an intense fluorescence emission with a quantum yield of 0.13. In the case of silver, the complex formed was found to possess a stoichiometry of [Ag2(L1)]2.3H2O. During reactions with manganese and copper metals, interesting catalysed processes have been found to take place, with remarkable consequences regarding the ligand skeleton structure. In synthesising the manganese complex, we obtained an unexpected dithiolate thiosemicarbazone tosyl ligand, H2L2, as a side-product, which has been fully characterised, including by X-ray diffraction analysis. In the case of copper, the solid complex has the formula [CuL1]2, but the crystallised product shows the copper atoms coordinated to a new cyclised thiosemicarbazone ligand, H2L3, as in the structures of the complexes [Cu(L3)]2.CH3CN (8) and [Cu(L3)(H2O)]2.CH3CN.H2O (9). The zinc complex [Zn(L1)]4 (12) displays a particular tetranuclear zeolite-type structure capable of hosting small molecules or ions, presumably through hydrogen bonding.  相似文献

Comparative solvent extraction (water/chloroform) studies of Ni(II) and Cu(II) employing a dinonyl-substituted N3O2-donor macrocycle (L2) as extractant have been undertaken from sulfate, chloride, nitrate and acetate-containing aqueous media. Contrary to expectations, efficient extraction of both metal sulfates was observed, the degree of extraction being comparable (or slightly enhanced) relative to that observed for each of the other anionic systems. X-Ray diffraction studies of [NiL1(H2O)3]SO4 x 4H2O and [CuL1(H2O)]SO4 x 6.67 H2O (where L1 is the unsubstituted derivative of L2) show that each complex occurs as a hydrogen-bonded 'cluster', with the sulfate anions involved in hydrogen bonded networks that incorporate ligand amine protons and water molecules; in the copper complex, which adopts a dimeric arrangement, simultaneous sulfate binding to a copper site is also present. In each complex the macrocyclic ligand fails to coordinate via its ether oxygen donors but instead is arranged so that the metal ion and sulfate anions are somewhat shielded hydrophobically from the exterior of the complex cluster assembly.  相似文献

2-(N-Tosylamino)benzaldehyde thiobenzoylhydrazone and its copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes with dimethylformamide (DMF) and methanol, [CuL(DMF)] and [ZnL(CH3OH)], respectively, were synthesized. We have studied the complex equilibria of copper(II) with a series of beta-substituted beta-amino acids (R: H, Me, Et, iBu, iPr, cHex, 1-EtPr, and tBu) in aqueous solution by pH potentiometry and electron paramagnetic resonace (EPR) spectroscopy in the range pH = 2-8 at various metal and ligand concentrations. The basicities of the corresponding donor groups differed only slightly in the series of ligands. A purely mathematical method, the matrix rank analysis carried out on the EPR spectrum package recorded in the presence of copper(II), indicated the formation of 6 independent paramagnetic species. Accordingly, Cu(2+) (aqua complex) and the complexes [CuLH](2+), [CuL](+), [CuL(2)H(2)](2+), [CuL(2)H](+), and [CuL(2)] were considered in the subsequent analysis of series of spectra, and also two isomers of [CuL(2)] were identified. The formation constants and the EPR parameters, e.g. the isotropic g-factors and the copper and nitrogen hyperfine couplings for the above species, were determined in the same optimization procedure by the simultaneous evaluation of spectra. The ligands "LH" are suggested to bind in equatorial positions through their carboxylate groups, while the amino acids in the L protonation state are likely to occupy two equatorial sites via the amino and carboxylate groups. For the isomers of [CuL(2)], the donors of the same kind are in the cis or trans position. As far as we know, this is the first reported case in which a strong correlation has been found between the steric effects of substituents characterized by Meyer's steric parameter V(a) and the protonation constants of metal complexes. The observed trend for the preference for nonprotonated complexes [CuL](+) and [CuL(2)] to increase with the steric demand of the substituent was explained by the increasing shielding effect of the substituent hindering protonation of the nonprotonated complex.  相似文献

Copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes supported by a popular beta-diketiminate ligand (1(-), 2-mesitylamino-4-mesitylimino-2-pentene), [CuII(1)(AcO)] and [[ZnII(1)]2(mu-MeO)(mu-AcO)], have been demonstrated to undergo an oxidative degradation to give a ketone diimine derivative (2) under aerobic conditions. The crystal structures of the mononuclear copper(II) and dinuclear zinc(II) complexes of the beta-diketiminate ligand as well as the copper(II) complex of the modified ligand have been determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Mechanism for the oxidative degradation reaction of the beta-diketiminate ligand is also discussed.  相似文献

A new tridentate Schiff base ligand HL (L = C14H19N2O), derived from the condensation of benzoylacetone and 2-dimethylaminoethylamine in a 1:1 ratio, reacts with copper(ii) acetate and cyanate, thiocyanate or azide, to give rise to several end-to-end polymeric complexes of formulae [CuL(mu(1,3)-NCO)]n 1, [CuL(mu(1,3)-NCS)]n 2 and the complex 3 has two crystallographically independent units of formula [CuL(N3)] in the asymmetric unit cell. Complex 3 exists in dimeric form rather than as a polymeric chain. Compound 1 is the first report of a singly end-to-end cyanate bridged polymeric chain of Cu(II) with a Schiff base as a co-ligand. There are many examples of double NCS bridged polymeric chains, but fewer singly bridged ones such as compound 2. We have characterized these complexes by analytical, spectroscopic, structural and variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The coordination geometry around the Cu(II) centers is distorted square pyramidal for 1 and 2 and square planar for complex 3. The magnetic susceptibility data show slight antiferromagnetic coupling for the polymers having J values -0.19 and -0.57 cm(-1) for complexes 1 and 2 respectively. The low values of J are consistent with the equatorial-axial disposition of the bridges in the polymers.  相似文献

Uncharged complexes, formulated as trimeric metallocycles of type [M3(L(1))3(Py)6] (where M = cobalt(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) and L(1) is the doubly deprotonated form of a 1,4-phenylene linked bis-beta-diketone ligand of type 1,4-bis(RC(O)CH2C(O))C6H4 (R = t-Bu)) have been synthesised, adding to related, previously reported complexes of these metals with L(1) (R = Ph) and copper(ii) with L(1) (R = Me, Et, Pr, t-Bu, Ph). New lipophilic ligand derivatives with R = hexyl, octyl or nonyl were also prepared for use in solvent extraction experiments. The X-ray structures of H2L(1) (R = t-Bu) and of its trinuclear (triangular) nickel(II) complex [Ni3(L(1))3(Py)6].3.5Py (R = t-Bu) are also presented. Electrochemical studies of H2L(1), [Co3(L(1))3(Py)6], [Ni3(L(1))3(Py)6], [Cu3(L(1))3], [Zn3(L(1))3(Py)6] and [Fe4(L(1))6] (all with R = t-Bu) show that oxidative processes for the complexes are predominantly irreversible, but several examples of quasireversible behaviour also occur and support the assignment of an anodic process, seen between +1.0 and +1.6 V, as involving metal-centred oxidations. Complex formation of the two tetraamine ligands (2S,3S)-1,2,3,4-tetraaminobutane (threo-tetraaminobutane, ttab) and (2R,3S)-1,2,3,4-tetraaminobutane (erythro-tetraaminobutane, etab) with Co(III), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Pd(II) was investigated in aqueous solution and in the solid state. For Ni(II) and Cu(II), the pH-dependent formation of a variety of species [Mn(II)xLyHz](2x+z)+ was established by potentiometric titrations and UV/Vis spectroscopy. In sufficiently acidic solutions the divalent cations formed a mononuclear complex with the doubly protonated ligand of composition [M(H2L)]4+. An example of such a complex was characterized in the crystal structure of [Pd(H2ttab)Cl2]Cl2.H2O. If the metal cation was present in excess, increase of pH resulted in the formation of dinuclear complexes [M2L]4+. Such a species was found in the crystal structure of [Cu2(ttab)Br4].H2O. Excess ligand, on the other hand, lead to the formation of a series of mononuclear bis-complexes [Mq(HxL)(HyL)](q+x+y)+. The crystal structure of [Co(Hetab)2][ZnCl4]2Cl. H2O with the inert, trivalent Co(III) center served as a model to illustrate the structural features of this class of complexes. By using an approximately equimolar ratio of the ligand and the metal cation, a variety of polymeric aggregates both in dilute aqueous solution and in the solid state were observed. The crystal structure of Cu2(ttab)3Br4, which exhibits a two-dimensional, infinite network, and that of [Ni8(ttab)12]Br16.17.5H2O, which contains discrete chiral [Ni8(ttab)12]16+ cubes with approximate T symmetry, are representative examples of such polymers. The energy of different diastereomeric forms of such complexes with the two tetraamine ligands were analyzed by means of molecular mechanics calculations, and the implications of these calculations for the different structures are discussed.  相似文献
