Novel liquid crystal (LC) dendrimers have been synthesised by hydrogen bonding between an s‐triazine as the central core and three peripheral dendrons derived from bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid. Symmetric acid dendrons bearing achiral promesogenic units have been synthesised to obtain 3:1 complexes with triazine that exhibit LC properties. Asymmetric dendrons that combine the achiral promesogenic unit and an active moiety derived from coumarin or pyrene structures have been synthesised in order to obtain dendrimers with photophysical and electrochemical properties. The formation of the complexes was confirmed by IR and NMR spectroscopy data. The liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and X‐ray diffractometry. All complexes displayed mesogenic properties, which were smectic in the case of symmetric dendrons and their complexes and nematic in the case of asymmetric dendrons and their dendrimers. A supramolecular model for the lamellar mesophase, based mainly on X‐ray diffraction studies, is proposed. The electrochemical behaviour of dendritic complexes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The UV/Vis absorption and emission properties of the compounds and the photoconductive properties of the dendrons and dendrimers were also investigated  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Novel liquid crystalline Janus dendrimers that combine a mesogenic block and an electroactive block have been synthesised. The mesogenic block is based on two third-generation Percec-type dendrons bearing six or eight terminal dodecyloxy alkyl chains, whereas the electroactive blocks are formed by one or two carbazole units. The liquid crystal behaviour was investigated by polarised-light optical microscopy, differential scanning microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The Janus dendrimers with one electroactive unit exhibited cubic or columnar liquid crystal phases, whereas the Janus dendrimers with two electroactive units did not show liquid crystalline behaviour. The UV-vis absorption and emission properties of the Janus dendrimers were investigated. The spectra suggested the existence of π-π stacking and the formation of aggregates in the solid state. Electrodeposition of the carbazole-containing dendrimers afforded semi-globular particles in which the number of electropolymerizable units and the flexible or rigid character of the linker have a decisive influence in the particle size.  相似文献

A series of 2,2‐bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid dendrons of generation 2 through 8 having a strained cyclooctyne at the core and hydroxy groups at the periphery were prepared by a divergent method and used to functionalize azide‐decorated α‐chymotrypsin. The ability of the appended dendrons to selectively block enzyme activity (through a molecular sieving effect) was investigated using a small molecule substrate (benzoyl‐l ‐tyrosine p‐nitroanilide), as well as two proteins of different size (casein and bovine serum albumin). Additionally, the ability of dendrons to block complexation with a chymotrypsin antagonist, α‐antichymotrypsin, was investigated, and it was found that the dendron coating effectively prevented inhibition by this antagonist. We found that a critical generation is required to achieve efficient sieving with bis‐MPA dendrons, which illustrates the importance of macromolecular architecture and size in the shielding of proteins.  相似文献

Liquid crystalline α,α′‐bis(4‐alkoxyphenylethynyl)oligothiophenes (bi‐ and ter‐thiophene) have been synthesized and their mesogenic behaviour and optical properties investigated. They all exhibited a nematic mesophase, and compounds with long alkoxy chains also showed lamellar phases. Increasing the number of thiophene units increased both the transition temperatures and the mesophase ranges. As for their optical properties, incorporating more thiophene units results in red‐shifted absorption and emission spectra, slightly enhanced quantum efficiency, and a larger Stoke's shift. Most importantly, in terms of the absorption and emission maxima, the incorporation of one 4‐alkoxyphenylethynyl moiety was found to be equivalent to adding one thiophene ring.  相似文献

合成了1~3代的嵌段树枝状分子聚苄醚-聚脂肪酯(Gx-PBE-b-Gx-PMPA, x=1,2,3)和两亲嵌段树枝状分子聚苄醚-周边含羟基的聚脂肪酯[Gx-PBE-b-Gx-PMPA(OH)x2, x=1,2,3]. PMPA(OH)x2-树枝片(Dendron)段周边的羟基数目分别是2, 4和8. 通过1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR和基质辅助激光解吸附电离飞行时间质谱(MALDI-TOF)(或场解析电离质谱)技术表征了Gx-PBE-b-Gx-PMPA和Gx-PBE-b-Gx-PMPA(OH)x2的结构. 同时, 采用变温FTIR光谱研究了在两亲嵌段树枝状分子中形成的氢键模式. 结果表明, 随着树枝片代数的增加, 两亲嵌段树枝状分子内趋向于形成作用较弱的分子内氢键, 说明形成3代两亲嵌段树枝状分子的三维结构削弱了羟基形成分子间氢键的能力.  相似文献

Cinnamate‐containing dendrimers have been prepared by peripheral functionalization of the amine groups of a poly(propyleneimine) dendrimer with 4‐methoxycinnamate‐ or 4‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)cinnamate‐derived units and/or 4‐cyanobiphenyl units in different proportions. The synthesis, full characterization in solution, thermal properties and optical properties of the novel monomers, homodendrimers and codendrimers are reported. The composition of the molecular structure of the codendrimers has been elucidated by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS). These liquid crystalline dendrimers display lamellar SmA mesophases. The codendrimers have been tailored in such a way that the photoactive units and the liquid crystal units absorb in different regions in order to allow better control over the processes induced by light. Linearly polarized UV light irradiation studies performed on thin films of the cinnamate codendrimers show that they are photoresponsive. A photoinduced anisotropy is generated with increasing exposure time, but in‐plane amplification of anisotropy by thermal annealing in the mesophase was not observed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and characterization of hydrogen‐bonded star‐shaped complexes consisting of stilbazolyloxy, azopyridyl, and Schiff base‐substituted cyclotriphosphazenes ( 3a , 3b , and 3c , respectively) and monoalkyloxy, bis(dodecyloxy), and tris(dodecyloxy)benzoic acids are reported. The thermal behaviors of complexes are studied by the means of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffractometry. Only 3a and 3b with monoalkyloxybenzoic acids show a homeotropic smectic A mesophase. The effect of azo and ethylene linkage of mesogenic groups in the cyclotriphosphazenes and the length of the flexible chain in monoalkyloxybenzoic acids on mesophase transition behaviors are investigated, revealing that the linkages in mesogenic groups governs the phase transition temperatures, and the length of flexible chain in proton donors plays an important role in controlling the magnitude of enthalpy and entropy of mesophase transitions in this supramolecular liquid crystal system. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Main‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyurethanes were synthesized based on a high aspect ratio mesogenic diol (4‐{[4‐(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy)‐phenylimino]‐methyl}‐benzoic acid 4‐{[4‐(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy)‐phenylimino]‐methyl}‐phenyl ester) as a chain extender; polycaprolactone (PCL) diol soft segments of different number‐average molecular weights (530, 1250, or 2000); and different diisocyanates, including 1,4‐hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), 4,4′‐methylene bis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) (H12MDI), and 4,4′‐methylene bis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI). The structure of the polymers was confirmed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscopy measurements were carried out to examine the liquid‐crystalline and thermal properties of the polyurethanes, respectively. The mesogenic diol was partially replaced with 20–50 mol % PCL. A 20 mol % mesogen content was sufficient to impart a liquid crystalline property to all the polymers. The partial replacement of the mesogenic diol with PCL of various molecular weights, as well as the various diisocyanates, influenced the phase transitions and the occurrence of mesophase textures. Characteristic liquid‐crystalline textures were observed when a sufficient content of the mesogenic diol was present. Depending on the flexible spacer length and the mesogenic content, grained and threadlike textures were obtained for the HMDI and H12MDI series polymers, whereas the polyurethanes prepared from MDI showed only grained textures for all the compositions. Liquid‐crystalline dendrons carrying either a thiol or disulfide function which display nematic, smectic A, columnar, or chiral nematic phases have been synthesized. Their mesomorphic properties are in agreement with the nature of the mesogenic units and structure of the dendrons. The first‐generation poly(aryl ester) dendron containing two cyanobiphenyl mesogenic units was used to functionalize gold nanoparticles. For full coverage, a smectic‐like supramolecular organization on the nanometer scale is observed, when the gold nanoparticles are spread onto carbon‐coated copper grids. This result indicates that the dendritic ligands reported here act as self‐organization promoters.  相似文献

Abstract

Eight new copper compounds with mesogenic properties from the series of the bis{1-[4-trans-(4-alkylcyclohexy1)phenyl]-alkylpropane-1,3-dionato} copper(II) complexes have been prepared. The thermal behaviour of these compounds was investigated by means of polarizing microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (D.S.C.) measurements. The mesophase, which could be found in most of them, is of the monotropic nematic type. This has been confirmed by miscibility experiments. The physical data of a binary mixture with an enantiotropic mesophase are also presented. In addition the crystal structures of two of the compounds are reported.  相似文献

A number of photochromic spiropyrans and spirooxazines containing mesogenic groups were synthesized. Only one of them, spiro-indoline-naphthoxazine with mesogenic substituent, 4-(4-heptylbenzoyloxy)benzoyloxy in 5-position, revealed mesomorphic properties. Its phase behaviour, photochromism and alignment in the electric field was investigated. A structure of the mesophase is discussed.  相似文献

To help understand the influence of polarity and length of the terminal alkyl chain of a molecule on the molecular stacking of a liquid crystal and on its mesogenic behaviour, four new aminophenylazo‐(4)‐p‐alkylbenzenes were prepared and one of them was further studied by single crystal structure determination. The molecular stacking based on this crystallographic data was established, and compared with that of two previously reported homologues. The mesogenic behaviour of this series of compounds was also investigated.  相似文献

New side‐chain cholesteric liquid‐crystalline elastomers containing cholesteryl 4‐allyloxybenzoate as cholesteric mesogenic units and biphenyl 4,4′‐bis(10‐undecen‐1‐ylenate) as smectic crosslinking units were synthesized. The chemical structures of the olefinic compounds and polymers obtained were confirmed by element analysis, Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The mesogenic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction measurements. The influence of the concentration of the crosslinking unit on the phase behavior of the elastomers was examined. The elastomers containing less than 17 mol % of the crosslinking units revealed elasticity, reversible mesomorphic phase transition, wider mesophase temperature ranges, and higher thermal stability. The experimental results demonstrated that the glass‐transition temperature, isotropization temperature, and mesophase temperature ranges decreased with an increasing concentation of the crosslinking unit. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two new mesogenic homologous series containing chloro, nitro and phenolic hydroxy groups were synthesised and their molecular structures characterised by a combination of element analysis and standard spectroscopic methods. The mesomorphic behaviour of the compounds of both series was investigated by polarising optical microscopy and, in some cases, differential scanning calorimetry. All the compounds of both the series exhibit an enantiotropic nematic mesophase. In series I higher members also exhibit an enantiotropic smectic A (SmA) mesophase, whereas in series II the enantiotropic SmA mesophase commences somewhat earlier for the middle members. The mesomorphic properties of both series are compared with each other and also with the properties of other structurally related series to evaluate the effects of different polar substituents on mesomorphism.  相似文献

Symmetric fully liquid-crystalline triblock copolymers of various structures containing optically active mesogenic groups are for the first time synthesized via pseudoliving radical reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization. Their phase behavior and physicochemical and optical properties are studied. It is shown that, depending on composition, at low temperatures block copolymers can form at temperatures phase-separated structures caused by microsegregation of blocks of different chemical natures and that, with an increase in temperature, these structures can mix to form a cholesteric mesophase characterized by a helical supramolecular structure. A model illustrating the molecular packing of block copolymers with a phase-separated lamellar structure is advanced. The effect of the molecular structure of the block copolymers on their optical properties is discussed.  相似文献

Self‐host thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have recently been identified as effective emitters for solution‐processed nondoped organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, except for the carbazole unit, few novel dendrons have been developed to build self‐host TADF emitters. This study reports two self‐host blue materials, tbCz‐SO and poCz‐SO, with the same TADF emissive core and different dendrons. The influence of the peripheral dendrons on the photophysical properties and electroluminescent performances of the self‐host materials were systematically investigated. The transient fluorescence and electroluminescence spectra indicated that the diphenylphosphoryl carbazole units could effectively encapsulate the emissive core to reduce the concentration quenching effect and to enhance reverse intersystem crossing. By using tbCz‐SO and poCz‐SO as host‐free blue emitters, the performance of the solution‐processed nondoped OLED device demonstrated that a more balanced charge transfer from the bipolar dendrons would offer a better current efficiency of 10.5 cd A−1 and stable color purity with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage units of (0.18, 0.27).  相似文献

Novel amphiphilic block molecules consisting of a rigid 2‐phenylthiophene or 5‐phenylbithienyl core, with a polar glycerol group attached to the phenyl ring and one or two alkyl chains attached to the thiophene ring on the other side, have been synthesised by using Ni(0) and Pd(0) catalyzed coupling reactions as key steps. The thermotropic and solvent‐induced liquid crystalline behaviour of these compounds was investigated by polarising optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. The influence of the length, number and position of the alkyl chains, and the length of the rigid core, on their mesophase behaviour was investigated. Compounds with one alkyl chain in the terminal 5‐position on the thiophene ring form only smectic A phases, compounds with two adjacent alkyl chains attached in the 4‐ and 5‐positions of the thiophene ring exhibit thermotropic columnar mesophases, and those with two long alkyl chains attached to the 3‐ and 5‐positions form columnar LC phases only in the presence of water. Another compound containing the longer 5‐phenylbithienyl core unit and two alkyl chains attached in lateral positions to each of the thiophene rings is not mesogenic.  相似文献

A new side cholesterol-functionalised liquid crystal (LC) copolymer based on aliphatic polycarbonate backbone was synthesised. The chemical structures of the block copolymers obtained in this study were characterised with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) spectra. Their thermal stability and phase behaviours were investigated with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarising optical microscopy. The molecular organisation in the mesophase was studied by temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD). As a result, the block copolymer bearing side cholesteryl groups showed a glass transition at 15.8°C and a smectic A (SmA) to isotropic phase transition at 151.3°C on heating cycle. XRD indicated that the block LC copolymer showed an interdigitated molecular arrangement of the mesogenic units within the smectic layers. This partial bilayer structure was similar to the SmA phase formed by polar mesogens.  相似文献

A series of novel tetrad high aspect ratio mesogenic diol monomers 4-{[4-(n-hydroxyalkoxy)-phenylimino]-methyl}-benzoic acid 4-{[4-(n-hydroxyalkoxy)-phenylimino]-methyl}-phenyl ester were prepared with varying alkoxy spacer length (n=2,4,6,8,10) by reacting 4-formylbenzoic acid 4-formylphenyl ester and 4-(n-hydroxyalkoxy) anilines. Two series of thermotropic main chain liquid crystalline unsegmented polyurethanes (PUs) were obtained by the polyaddition of the mesogenic diols with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) and methylene bis(cyclohexylisocyanate) (H12MDI) in dimethylformamide respectively. The effect of the incorporation of a third component namely polyol on the liquid crystalline properties of the polyurethanes was also studied. Linear segmented PUs were synthesised by a two-step block copolymerisation method. The PUs synthesised were based on six spacer mesogenic diol chain extender, soft segments poly(tetramethylene oxide)glycol (PTMG) (Mn= 650,1000,2000) and polycaprolactone diol (PCL) (Mn=530,1250,2000) of varying molecular weights and different diisocyanates including HMDI, H12MDI and methylene bis(phenylene isocyanate) (MDI). Structural elucidation was carried out by elemental analysis, fourier transform infra red (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR and 13C NMR) spectroscopy. Inherent viscosity of the unsegmented polymers measured in methanesulphonic acid at 26°C was in the range of 0.13 - 0.65 dL/g while the molecular weights and molecular weight distribution of the segmented polyruethanes was determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Mesomorphic properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hot stage polarising optical microscopy and the thermal stability was determined by thermogravimetric(TG)analysis. The monomeric diols and the polyurethanes exhibited nematic texture and good mesophase stability. It was observed that the partial replacement of the mesogenic diol by the polyol of varying molecular weights influenced the phase transitions and the occurrence of mesophase textures. The phase transition temperatures of the investigated polyurethanes showed dependence on the chain length of the soft segment and on the content of the mesogen moiety. A higher content of mesogenic moiety was needed to obtain liquid crystalline property when the soft segment length was increased as observed in the case of PTMG. Grained and threaded textures were observed depending on the molecular weight of the soft segment, the mesogen content and the diisocyanate. The stress-strain analyses showed that the polymers bused on high molecular weight PTMG soft segment have elastomeric property while the PCL based PUs displayed no elastomeric property.  相似文献

The molecular design, synthesis and thermal behaviour of the first liquid crystalline tetramers composed of four non-identical mesogenic entities connected covalently through paraffinic spacers are presented. These new molecular structures consisting of a tolan (half disc-shaped), azobenzene (photoactive), biphenyl and cholesteryl ester (thermochromic) cores, connected through either an even-even-odd or an odd-even-odd paraffinic spacer, exhibit features of a columnar mesophase.  相似文献
