Negative ion formation in the three perfluoroethers (PFEs) diglyme (C(6)F(14)O(3)), triglyme (C(8)F(18)O(4)) and crownether (C(10)F(20)O(5)) is studied following electron attachment in the range from ~0 to 15?eV. All three compounds show intense low energy resonances at subexcitation energies (<3?eV) decomposing into a variety of negatively charged fragments. These fragment ions are generated via dissociative electron attachment (DEA), partly originating from sequential decompositions on the metastable (μs) time scale as observed from the MIKE (metastable induced kinetic energy) scans. Only in perfluorocrownether a signal due to the non-decomposed parent anion is observed. Additional and comparatively weaker resonances are located in the energy range between ~10 and 17?eV which preferentially decompose into lighter ions. It is suggested that specific features of perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs) relevant in applications, e.g., the strong bonding to surfaces induced by UV radiation of the substrate or degradation of PFPE films in computer hard disc drives can be explained by their pronounced sensitivity towards low energy electrons.  相似文献

Track structure Monte Carlo simulations of ionising radiation in water are often used to estimate radiation damage to DNA. For this purpose, an accurate simulation of the transport of densely ionising low-energy secondary electrons is particularly important, but is impaired by a high uncertainty of the required physical interaction cross section data of liquid water.A possible tool for the verification of the secondary electron transport in a track structure simulation has been suggested by Toburen et al. (2010), who have measured the angle-dependent energy spectra of electrons, emitted from a thin layer of amorphous solid water (ASW) upon a passage of 6 MeV protons. In this work, simulations were performed for the setup of their experiment, using the PTB Track structure code (PTra) and Geant4-DNA. To enable electron transport below the ionisation threshold, additional excitation and dissociative attachment anion states were included in PTra and activated in Geant4. Additionally, a surface potential was considered in both simulations, such that the escape probability for an electron is dependent on its energy and impact angle at the ASW/vacuum interface. For vanishing surface potential, the simulated spectra are in good agreement with the measured spectra for energies above 50 eV. Below, the simulations overestimate the yield of electrons by a factor up to 4 (PTra) or 7 (Geant4-DNA), which is still a better agreement than obtained in previous simulations of this experimental situation. The agreement of the simulations with experimental data was significantly improved by using a step-like increase of the potential energy at the ASW surface.  相似文献

Electrons with virtually no kinetic energy (close to 0 eV) trigger the decomposition of cytotoxic cyclobutane‐pyrimidine dimer (CPD) into a surprisingly large variety of fragment ions plus their neutral counterparts. The response of CPD to low energy electrons is thus comparable to that of explosives like trinitrotoluene (TNT). The dominant unimolecular reaction is the splitting into two thymine like units, which can be considered as the essential molecular step in the photolyase of CPD. We find that CPD is significantly more sensitive towards low energy electrons than its thymine building blocks. It is proposed that electron attachment at very low energy proceeds via dipole bound states, supported by the large dipole moment of the molecule (6.2 D). These states act as effective doorways to dissociative electron attachment (DEA).  相似文献

We measured absolute partial cross sections for the formation of various singly charged and doubly charged positive ions produced by electron impact on silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) using two different experimental techniques, a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) and a fast-neutral-beam apparatus. The energy range covered was from the threshold to 900 eV in the TOF-MS and to 200 eV in the fast-neutral-beam apparatus. The results obtained by the two different experimental techniques were found to agree very well (better than their combined margins of error). The SiCl3(+) fragment ion has the largest partial ionization cross section with a maximum value of slightly above 6x10(-20) m2 at about 100 eV. The cross sections for the formation of SiCl4(+), SiCl+, and Cl+ have maximum values around 4x10(-20) m2. Some of the cross-section curves exhibit an unusual energy dependence with a pronounced low-energy maximum at an energy around 30 eV followed by a broad second maximum at around 100 eV. This is similar to what has been observed by us earlier for another Cl-containing molecule, TiCl4 [R. Basner, M. Schmidt, V. Tamovsky, H. Deutsch, and K. Becker, Thin Solid Films 374 291 (2000)]. The maximum cross-section values for the formation of the doubly charged ions, with the exception of SiCl3(++), are 0.05x10(-20) m2 or less. The experimentally determined total single ionization cross section of SiCl4 is compared with the results of semiempirical calculations.  相似文献

The photoionization of methyl iodide beam seeded in argon and helium is studied by time-of-flight mass spectrometry using a 25 ns, 532 nm Nd-YAG laser with intensities in the range of 2 × 1010–2 × 1011 W/cm2. Multiply charged ions of Iq+ (q = 2–3) and C2+ with tens of eV kinetic energies have been observed when laser interacts with the middle part of the pulsed molecular beam, whose peak profiles are independent on the laser polarization directions. Strong evidences show that these ions are coming from the Coulomb explosion of multiply charged CH3I clusters, and laser induced inverse bremsstrahlung absorption of caged electrons plays a key role in the formation of multiply charged ions.  相似文献

Single photon double ionization of CF4 has been studied by means of a time-of-flight photoelectron-photoelectron coincidence technique, which has very recently been extended towards ion detection, with energy analysis for the electrons and mass analysis for the ions. The complete single photon double ionization electron spectrum of CF4 up to a binding energy of approximately 51 eV is presented and discussed, also with the aid of accurate ab initio Green's function calculations. From ion detection in coincidence with the ejected electrons, we derive fragmentation pathway-selected double ionization electron spectra of CF4. From the same data we extract the yield of each doubly charged ion or ion pair as a function of the double ionization energy.  相似文献

We report the results of a study on the influence of organic salts on the induction of single strand breaks (SSBs) and double strand breaks (DSBs) in DNA by electrons of 1 eV to 60 keV. Plasmid DNA films are prepared with two different concentrations of organic salts, by varying the amount of the TE buffer (Tris-HCl and EDTA) in the films with ratio of 1:1 and 6:1 Tris ions to DNA nucleotide. The films are bombarded with electrons of 1, 10, 100, and 60?000 eV under vacuum. The damage to the 3197 base-pair plasmid is analyzed ex vacuo by agarose gel electrophoresis. The highest yields are reached at 100 eV and the lowest ones at 60 keV. The ratios of SSB to DSB are surprisingly low at 10 eV (~4.3) at both salt concentrations, and comparable to the ratios measured with 100 eV electrons. At all characteristic electron energies, the yields of SSB and DSB are found to be higher for the DNA having the lowest salt concentration. However, the organic salts are more efficient at protecting DNA against the damage induced by 1 and 10 eV electrons. DNA damage and protection by organic ions are discussed in terms of mechanisms operative at each electron energy. It is suggested that these ions create additional electric fields within the groove of DNA, which modify the resonance parameter of 1 and 10 eV electrons, namely, by reducing the electron capture cross-section of basic DNA units and the lifetime of corresponding transient anions. An interstrand electron transfer mechanism is proposed to explain the low ratios for the yields of SSB to those of DSB produced by 10 eV electrons.  相似文献

Thin films of the short single DNA strand, GCAT, in which one of the bases has been removed were bombarded with 3 to 15 eV electrons. The yield functions of the H(-), O(-) and OH(-) ions desorbed from these films exhibit a broad peak near 9 eV, which is attributed to dissociative electron attachment to the basic molecules. Whereas removal of any one of the bases considerably decreases N-glycosidic and backbone C-O bond scission, the creation of basic sites does not appreciably modify bond rupture leading to anion electron stimulated desorption. These seemingly contradictory results make it possible to propose a detailed mechanism leading to the transfer of electrons in the range 5-13 eV within DNA.  相似文献

Doubly charged rare gas cations are produced in a chemical ionization source under conditions in which the energy of the primary ionizing electrons is more than 20 eV below the energetic threshold. The formation mechanism consists of creating secondary electrons outside the ion source followed by the acceleration of some of these electrons into the source where they initiate high energy ionization processes. Evidence suggesting that the secondary electrons arise from ionizing collisions between accelerated ions and background gas is presented. This process is expected to occur generally when positive ion chemical ionization is performed in magnetic deflection instruments.  相似文献

The electron-stimulated luminescence (ESL) from amorphous solid water and crystalline ice films deposited on Pt(111) at 100 K is investigated as a function of the film thickness, incident electron energy (5-1000 eV), isotopic composition, and film structure. The ESL emission spectrum has a characteristic double-peaked shape that has been attributed to a transition between a superexcited state (C) and the dissociative, first excited state (A) in water: C --> A. Comparing the electron-stimulated luminescence and O2 electron-stimulated desorption (ESD) yields versus incident electron energy, we find the ESL threshold is approximately 3 eV higher than the O2 ESD threshold, which is close to the center of the emission spectrum near 400 nm and supports the C --> A assignment for the ESL. For thin films, radiative and nonradiative interactions with the substrate tend to quench the luminescence. The luminescence yield increases with coverage since the interactions with the substrate become less important. The ESL yield from D2O is approximately 4-5 times higher than that from H2O. With use of layered films of H2O and D2O, this sizable isotopic effect on the ESL is exploited to spatially profile the luminescence emission within the ASW films. These experiments show that most of the luminescence is emitted from within the penetration depth of the incident electron. However, the results depend on the order of the isotopes in the film and can be modeled by assuming some migration of the electronically excited states within the film. The ESL is very sensitive to defects and structural changes in solid water, and the emission yield is significantly higher from amorphous films than from crystalline ice.  相似文献

Dissociative recombination (DR) of water cluster ions H(+)(H(2)O)(n) (n=4-6) with free electrons has been studied at the heavy-ion storage ring CRYRING (Manne Siegbahn Laboratory, Stockholm University). For the first time, branching ratios have been determined for the dominating product channels and absolute DR cross sections have been measured in the energy range from 0.001 to 0.7 eV. Dissociative recombination is concluded to result in extensive fragmentation for all three cluster ions, and a maximum number of heavy oxygen-containing fragments is produced with a probability close to unity. The branching ratio results agree with earlier DR studies of smaller water cluster ions where the channel nH(2)O+H has been observed to dominate and where energy transfer to internal degrees of freedom has been concluded to be highly efficient. The absolute DR cross sections for H(+)(H(2)O)(n) (n=4-6) decrease monotonically with increasing energy with an energy dependence close to E(-1) in the lower part of the energy range and a faster falloff at higher energies, in agreement with the behavior of other studied heavy ions. The cross section data have been used to calculate DR rate coefficients in the temperature range of 10-2000 K. The results from storage ring experiments with water cluster ions are concluded to partly confirm the earlier results from afterglow experiments. The DR rate coefficients for H(+)(H(2)O)(n) (n=1-6) are in general somewhat lower than reported from afterglow experiments. The rate coefficient tends to increase with increasing cluster size, but not in the monotonic way that has been reported from afterglow experiments. The needs for further experimental studies and for theoretical models that can be used to predict the DR rate of polyatomic ions are discussed.  相似文献

Although electrons having enough energy to ionize or electronically excite DNA have long been known to cause strand breaks (i.e., bond cleavages), only recently has it been suggested that even lower-energy electrons (most recently 1 eV and below) can also damage DNA. The findings of the present work suggest that, while DNA bases can attach electrons having kinetic energies in the 1 eV range and subsequently undergo phosphate-sugar O-C sigma bond cleavage, it is highly unlikely (in contrast to recent suggestions) that electrons having kinetic energies near 0 eV can attach to the phosphate unit's P=O bonds. Electron kinetic energies in the 2-3 eV range are required to attach directly to DNA's phosphate group's P=O pi orbital and induce phosphate-sugar O-C sigma bond cleavages if the phosphate groups are rendered neutral (e.g., by nearby counterions). Moreover, significant activation barriers to C-O bond breakage render the rates of both such damage mechanisms (i.e., P=O-attached and base-attached) slow as compared to electron autodetachment and to other damage processes.  相似文献

The electron-stimulated production of molecular hydrogen (D(2), HD, and H(2)) from amorphous solid water (ASW) deposited on Pt(111) is investigated. Experiments with isotopically layered films of H(2)O and D(2)O are used to profile the spatial distribution of the electron-stimulated reactions leading to hydrogen within the water films. The molecular hydrogen yield has two components that have distinct reaction kinetics due to reactions that occur at the ASW/Pt interface and the ASW/vacuum interface, but not in the bulk. However, the molecular hydrogen yield as a function of the ASW film thickness in both pure and isotopically layered films indicates that the energy for the reactions is absorbed in the bulk of the films and electronic excitations migrate to the interfaces where they drive the reactions.  相似文献

Low energy electrons (LEEs) are produced in copious amounts by the primary radiation used in radiation therapy. The damage caused to the DNA by these secondary electrons in the energy range 5-22 eV has been studied to understand their possible role in radiation induced damage. Electrons are irradiated on dried films of plasmid DNA (pQE30) and analysed using agarose gel electrophoresis. Single strand breaks (SSBs) induced by LEE to supercoiled plasmid DNA show resonance structures at 7, 12, and 15 eV for low doses and 6, 10, and ~18 eV at saturation doses. The present measurements have an overall agreement with the literature that LEEs resonantly induce SSBs in DNA. Resonant peaks in the SSBs induced by LEEs at 7, 12, and 15 eV with the lowest employed dose in the current study are somewhat different from those reported earlier by two groups. The observed differences are perhaps related to the irradiation dose, conditions and the nature of DNA employed, which is further elaborated.  相似文献

In order to study the dynamics of double photoionization of helium, we report new coincidence measurements between low energy electrons and doubly charged ions, from 78 to 95 eV photon energy. We show that the range of validity of the Wannier theory depends upon the observable. For the exponentn of the threshold law, this range amounts to some 3 eV above onset, thus confirming previous published experimental work. In contrast, the energy distribution of the two outgoing electrons is found flat, within 20%, in agreement with the theoretical predictions, but in a 15 eV energy range above threshold.  相似文献

We have investigated experimentally the formation of anions and cations of deoxyribose sugar (C(5)H(10)O(4)) via inelastic electron interaction (attachment/ionization) using a monochromatic electron beam in combination with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The ion yields were measured as a function of the incident electron energy between about 0 and 20 eV. As in the case of other biomolecules (nucleobases and amino acids), low energy electron attachment leads to destruction of the molecule via dissociative electron attachment reactions. In contrast to the previously investigated biomolecules dehydrogenation is not the predominant reaction channel for deoxyribose; the anion with the highest dissociative electron attachment (DEA) cross section of deoxyribose is formed by the release of neutral particles equal to two water molecules. Moreover, several of the DEA reactions proceed already with "zero energy" incident electrons. In addition, the fragmentation pattern of positively charged ions of deoxyribose also indicates strong decomposition of the molecule by incident electrons. For sugar the relative amount of fragment ions compared to that of the parent cation is about an order of magnitude larger than in the case of nucleobases. We determined an ionization energy value for C(5)H(10)O(4) (+) of 10.51+/-0.11 eV, which is in good agreement with ab initio calculations. For the fragment ion C(5)H(6)O(2) (+) we obtained a threshold energy lower than the ionization energy of the parent molecular ion. All of these results have important bearing for the question of what happens in exposure of living tissue to ionizing radiation. Energy deposition into irradiated cells produces electrons as the dominant secondary species. At an early time after irradiation these electrons exist as ballistic electrons with an initial energy distribution up to several tens of electron volts. It is just this energy regime for which we find in the present study rather characteristic differences in the outcome of electron interaction with the deoxyribose molecule compared to other nucleobases (studied earlier). Therefore, damage induced by these electrons to the DNA or RNA strands may start preferentially at the ribose backbone. In turn, damaged deoxyribose is known as a key intermediate in producing strand breaks, which are the most severe form of lesion in radiation damage to DNA and lead subsequently to cell death.  相似文献

The [M21+2H]2+ cluster of the zwitterion betaine, M = (CH3)3NCH2CO2, formed via electrospray ionisation (ESI), has been allowed to interact with electrons with energies ranging from >0 to 50 eV in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT‐ICR) mass spectrometer. The types of gas‐phase electron‐induced dissociation (EID) reactions observed are dependent on the energy of the electrons. In the low‐energy region up to 10 eV, electrons are mainly captured, forming the charge‐reduced species, {[M21+2H]+ . }*, in an excited state, which stabilises via the ejection of an H atom and one or more neutral betaines. In the higher energy region, above 12 eV, a Coulomb explosion of the multiply charged clusters is observed in highly asymmetric fission with singly charged fragments carrying away more than 70% of the parent mass. Neutral betaine evaporation is also observed in this energy region. In addition, a series of singly charged fragments appears which arise from C? X bond cleavage reactions, including decarboxylation and CH3 group transfer. These latter reactions may arise from access of electronic excited states of the precursor ions. The growth of amorphous solid water (ASW) films on Pt(111) is investigated using rare gas (e.g., Kr) physisorption. Temperature programmed desorption of Kr is sensitive to the structure of thin water films and can be used to assess the growth modes of these films. At all temperatures that are experimentally accessible (20-155 K), the first layer of water wets Pt(111). Over a wide temperature range (20-120 K), ASW films wet the substrate and grow approximately layer by layer for at least the first three layers. In contrast to the ASW films, crystalline ice films do not wet the water monolayer on Pt(111). Virtually identical results were obtained for ASW films on epitaxial Pd(111) films grown on Pt(111). The desorption rates of thin ASW and crystalline ice films suggest that the relative free energies of the films are responsible for the different growth modes. However, at low temperatures, surface relaxation or "transient mobility" is primarily responsible for the relative smoothness of the films. A simple model of the surface relaxation semiquantitatively accounts for the observations.  相似文献

Detachment of heme prosthetic groups from gaseous myoglobin ions has been studied by collision-induced dissociation and infrared multiphoton dissociation in combination with Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Multiply charged holomyoglobin ions (hMbn+) were generated by electrospray ionization and transferred to an ion cyclotron resonance cell, where the ions of interest were isolated and fragmented by either collision with Ar atoms or irradiation with 3 mum photons, producing apomyoglobin ions (aMbn+). Both charged heme loss (with [Fe(III)-heme]+ and aMb(n-1)+ as the products) and neutral heme loss (with [Fe(II)-heme] and aMbn+ as the products) were detected concurrently for hMbn+ produced from a myoglobin solution pretreated with reducing reagents. By reference to Ea = 0.9 eV determined by blackbody infrared radiative dissociation for charged heme loss of ferric hMbn+, an activation energy of 1.1 eV was deduced for neutral heme loss of ferrous hMbn+ with n = 9 and 10.  相似文献

A preliminary study on the atmospheric-pressure Penning ionization (APP(e)I) of gaseous organic compounds with Ar* has been made. The metastable argon atoms (Ar*: 11.55 eV for (3)P(2) and 11.72 eV for (3)P(0)) were generated by the negative-mode corona discharge of atmospheric-pressure argon gas. By applying a high positive voltage (+500 to +1000 V) to the stainless steel capillary for the sample introduction (0.1 mm i.d., 0.3 mm o.d.), strong ion signals could be obtained. The ions formed were sampled through an orifice into the vacuum and mass-analyzed by an orthogonal time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The major ions formed by APP(e)I are found to be molecular-related ions for alkanes, aromatics, and oxygen-containing compounds. Because only the molecules with ionization energies less than the internal energy of Ar* are ionized, the present method will be a selective and highly sensitive interface for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.  相似文献
