The rheological behavior of dope solutions of poly(acrylonitrile‐co‐itaconic acid) or poly(AN‐co‐IA) is important from the point of view of deriving the spinning conditions for good quality special acrylic fibers. The viscosity of the resin dope is dictated by the polymer concentration, molar mass, temperature and shear force. The dynamic shear rheology of concentrated poly(AN‐co‐IA) polymer dope solutions in N, N‐dimethylformamide, in the molar mass (M¯v) range of 1×105 to 1×106 g/mol, was investigated in the shear rate (γ′) range of 1×101 to 5×104 min?1. An empirical relation between η and M¯v was found to exist at constant shear rate. The dope viscosity was dependent on the molar mass and the shear rate at a given temperature (T) and concentration. The polymer molar mass index of dope viscosity (m) was calculated as functions of concentration (c), shear rate and temperature. The m values increased with shear rate and temperature. A master equation relating m, with shear rate and temperature was derived for a given dope concentration. At higher shear rates, m tends to the value of 3.4, which is close to the molar mass index of viscosity reported for molten thermoplastics. m increased significantly with shear rate and nominally with temperature, while an increase in concentration decreased it. The onset of shear thinning of the dope shifted to a lower shear rate regime with an increase in polymer concentration and the molar mass. For a given value of molar mass, the increase in viscosity of the dope solution with polymer concentration was dependent on the shear rate.  相似文献

Thermal degradation behavior of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) nanocomposites, with different nanotubes contents (0.5, 1.5 and 3.5 wt%) prepared via in-situ polymerization technique have been investigated using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA spectra revealed that these nanocomposites had enhanced thermal stability and no significant mass loss (<0.4 wt%) occurred up to 350°C. Thermal degradation of these UHMWPE/MWCNT nanocomposites was investigated in terms of parameters such as the onset temperature of degradation (T10), the decomposition temperature at 50% wt loss (T50), the degradation temperature of maximum rate of the weight loss (Tm), and the residual yields (WR) from TGA. The degradation activation energies (E) of virgin UHMWPE and its nanocomposites were estimated using the Friedman, the Ozawa, Flynn, and Wall (OFW), and the Kissinger's methods. Results indicated that the degradation activation energy for the virgin UHMWPE was 281.3 kJ/mol. The activation energy increased with increasing nanotube loading up to 1.5 wt% indicating that MWCNTs had a stabilizing effect on the degradation of the matrix. However, loadings of 3.5 wt% of nanotube or more could slightly decrease the activation energy. The decrease in the activation energy for degradation of nanocomposites with higher MWCNT concentrations might be attributed to the catalytic effects of nanotubes and polymerization catalyst residues. The “model fitting” method indicated a mechanism of n th-order auto-catalysis from the form of the conversion curves for UHMWPE/MWCNTs nanocomposites prepared via in-situ polymerization.  相似文献

Linear polystyrene chains were grown from the convex surface of two commercially available multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with similar diameter but different lengths. The MWCNTs were supplied from Bayer Material Science® (purity >95%, external diameter = 13–16 nm, length = 1–10 μm, denoted MWCNTBMS95) and FutureCarbon GmbH (purity >99%, external diameter = 15 nm, length = 5–50 μm, denoted MWCNTFC99). The MWCNTs were oxidized with nitric acid, consecutively reacted with thionyl chloride, glycol or poly(ethylene glycol), 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide and finally with styrene under atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) conditions. The content of polystyrene grafted from the surface of the MWCNTs can be controlled by adjusting the molecular weight of the poly(ethylene glycol), the initiator concentration and the monomer to carbon nanotube weight ratio. Under comparable experimental conditions, a higher amount of polystyrene is grafted from the MWCNTBMS95 than from MWCNTFC99. The difference in dimensions and the state of aggregation of the carbon nanotubes influence the grafting from polymerization reactions, where relative shorter and tightly aggregated carbon nanotubes promote higher polymerizations yields than longer and less aggregated carbon nanotubes. The increase of the viscosity of the carbon nanotube dispersion decreases the polymer grafting content. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 1035–1046, 2010  相似文献

Ring-opening surface initiated polymerization of l-proline N-carboxyanhydride was performed from amine functionalized single (SWNTs) and multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The primary amines were grafted on the surfaces via a well-studied Diels–Alder cycloaddition. The initiator attachment helped the debundling of carbon nanotubes as shown by atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies where only small aggregates were observed. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed high wt% of grafted polyproline on the carbon nanotubes surface after the ring-opening polymerization. AFM studies showed a rather uniform layer of grafted polyproline from both MWNTs and SWNTs. The grafting of PLP on the surface was also verified by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy as well as 1H NMR in CDCl3/d-TFA. The polyproline grafted carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were readily dissolved in organic solvents in contrast to the insoluble pristine and amine-functionalized CNTs.  相似文献

PCL was blended with pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and with a nanohybrid obtained from the same MWCNT but grafted with low molecular weight PCL, employing concentrations of 0.25 to 5 wt % of MWCNT and MWCNT‐g‐PCL. Excellent CNT dispersion was found in all samples leading to supernucleation of both nanofiller types. Nanohybrids with 1 wt % or less MWCNTs crystallize faster than nanocomposites (due to supernucleation), while the trend eventually reverses at higher nanotubes content (because of plasticization). Rheological results show that yield‐like behavior develops in both nanocomposites, even for the minimum content of carbon nanotubes. In addition, the MWCNT‐g‐PCL family, when compared with the neat polymer, exhibits lower values of viscosity and modulus in oscillatory shear, and higher compliance in creep. These rheological differences are discussed in terms of the plasticization effect caused by the existence of low molecular weight free and grafted PCL chains in the nanohybrids. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Matrimid/polysulfone (PSf) dual-layer hollow fiber membranes were fabricated by using co-extrusion and dry-jet wet-spinning phase-inversion techniques. The effects of the spinning dope composition, spinneret dimension, spinneret temperature and the air gap distance on the hollow fiber membranes separation performance were studied. Aging phenomenon was also studied. After coated by 3 wt% silicon solution, the hollow fiber membranes have an O2/N2 selectivity of 7.55 at 25 °C, 506.625 kPa which exceeds the intrinsic value of Matrimid. The membranes have an O2 permeance of 9.36 GPU with an apparent dense-layer thickness of 1421 Å calculated from the O2 permeability. SEM images show the high porosity underneath the dense skin. It indicates that non-solvent addition is not necessary in the inner spinning dope to induce the macroviod formation. The binodals of the Matrimid/solvent/H2O and PSf/solvent/H2O indicate that the composition of the spinning dope plays an important role in the structure and the gas separation performance of the dual-layer hollow fiber membranes. The delayed demixing of the inner spinning dope may fabricate low resistance support layers in the dual-layer hollow fiber membranes.  相似文献

Summary: The research deals with the preparation and the further comprehensive characterization of metallocene polypropylene-based composite materials by incorporation of carbon black nanoparticles. Composites containing up to 10 wt% of carbon black were prepared by direct melt mixing in a single screw extruder Brabender Extrusiograph type 30/25D with attached static mixer at melt temperature of 200 °C and a screw speed of 30 rpm, according to a two-step process. Some composites were treated with 3 wt% maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAH-PP). The rheological behaviour of the miPP nanocomposites was determined by cone/plate rheological measurements at 180 °C. The composites were characterized by SEM for morphological details and uniaxial stress-strain measurements for determining the mechanical parameters. Electric conductivity of injection molded plates from these composites was investigated. The different miPPs studied are ranked in an ascending order according to their increasing molecular weight concerning the magnitude of their rheological parameters. The maleic anhydride compatibilizer leads to lower viscosity values even at high shear gradients and to better homogenization of the nanofiller in the polymer matrix. The processing conditions, carbon black concentration and viscosity of the virgin polymer have an impact on the final conductivity of the miPP/carbon black composites.  相似文献

Multi‐walled carbon (MWCNT) and tungsten disulfide (INT‐WS2) nanotubes are materials with excellent mechanical properties, high electrical and thermal conductivity. These special properties make them excellent candidates for high strength and electrically conductive polymer nanocomposite applications. In this work, the possibility of the improvement of mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) by the introduction of MWCNT and INT‐WS2 nanotubes was investigated. The PTT nanocomposites with low loading of nanotubes were prepared by in situ polymerization method. Analysis of the nanocomposites' morphology carried out by SEM and TEM has confirmed that well‐dispersed nanotubes in the PTT matrix were obtained at low loading (<0.5 wt%). Thermal and thermo‐oxidative stability of nanocomposites was not affected by the presence of nanotubes in PTT matrix. Loading with INT‐WS2 up to 0.5 wt% was insufficient to ensure electrical conductivity of PTT nanocomposite films. In the case of nanocomposites filled with MWCNT, it was found that nanotube incorporation leads to increase of electrical conductivity of PTT films by 10 orders of magnitude, approaching a value of 10?3 S/cm at loading of 0.3 wt%. Tensile properties of amorphous and semicrystalline (annealed samples) nanocomposites were affected by the presence of nanotubes. Moreover, the increase in the brittleness of semicrystalline nanocomposites with the increase in MWCNT loading was observed, while the nanocomposites filled with INT‐WS2 were less brittle than neat PTT. In this work, we report on the synthesis and characterization of thermoresponsive poly(N-vinylcaprolactam), PNVCL, nanocomposite hydrogels containing nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) by the use of frontal polymerization technique, which is a convenient, easy and low energy-consuming method of macromolecular synthesis. CNC was obtained by acid hydrolysis of commercial microcrystalline cellulose and dispersed in dimethylsulfoxide. The dispersion was characterized by TEM analysis and mixed with suitable amounts of N-vinylcaprolactam for the synthesis of PNVCL nanocomposite hydrogels having a CNC concentration ranging between 0.20 and 2.0 wt%. The nanocomposite hydrogels were analyzed by SEM and their swelling and rheological features were investigated. It was found that CNC decreases the swelling ratio even at small concentration. The rheological properties of the hydrogels indicated that CNC strongly influenced the viscoelastic modulus, even at concentrations as low as 0.1 wt%: both G′ and G″, and the viscosity increase with CNC content, indicating that the nanocellulose has a great potential to reinforce PNVCL polymer hydrogels.  相似文献

Hydroxypropyl‐β‐cyclodextrin (HP‐β‐CD) is a modified β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) derivative, which is toxicologically harmless to mammals and other animals. HP‐β‐CD is electrospun from an aqueous solution by blending with a non‐toxic, biocompatible, synthetic polymer poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). Aqueous solutions containing different HP‐β‐CD/PEO blends (50:50–80:20) with variable concentrations (4 wt%–12 wt%) were used. Scanning electron microscope was used to investigate the morphology of the fibers, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of HP‐β‐CD in the fiber. Uniform nanofibers with an average diameter of 264, 244, and 236 nm were obtained from 8 wt% solution of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30 HP‐β‐CD/PEO, respectively. The average diameter of the fiber was decreased with increasing of HP‐β‐CD/PEO ratio. However, a higher proportion of HP‐β‐CD in the spinning solution increased beads in the fibers. The polymer concentration had no significant effect on the fiber diameter. The most uniform fibers with the narrowest diameter distribution were obtained from the 8 wt% of 50:50 solution. A series of PET/acid-treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposites of varying nanoparticles’ concentration were prepared, using the in situ polymerization technique. TEM micrographs verified that the dispersion of the MWCNTs into the PET matrix was homogeneous, while some relatively small aggregates co-existed at higher filler contents. Intrinsic viscosity of the prepared nanocomposites was increased at low MWCNTs contents (up to 0.25 wt%), while at higher contents a gradual reduction was observed. The surface carboxylic groups of acid-treated MWCNTs probably reacted with the hydroxyl end groups of PET, acting as chain extenders at smaller concentrations, while at higher concentrations, on the other hand, led to the formation of branched and cross-linked macromolecules, with reduced apparent molecular weights. From the thermogravimetric curves, it was concluded that the prepared samples exhibited good thermostability, since no remarkable mass loss occurred up to 320 °C (<0.5%). The activation energy (E) of degradation of the studied materials was estimated using the Ozawa, Flynn, and Wall (OFW), Friedman and Kissinger’s methods. Pure PET had an E = 223.5 kJ/mol, while in the PET/MWCNTs nanocomposites containing up to 1 wt% the E gradually increased, indicating that MWCNTs had a stabilizing effect upon the decomposition of the matrix. Only the sample containing 2 wt% of MWCNTs exhibited a lower E due to the existence of the aforementioned cross-linked macromolecules. The form of the conversion function for all the studied samples obtained by fitting was the mechanism of nth-order auto-catalysis.  相似文献

The functionalized multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (f‐MWCNTs) were obtained by Friedel–Crafts acylation, which introduced aromatic amine groups onto the sidewall. And the grafted yield was adjusted by controlling the concentration of the catalyst. The composite solutions containing f‐MWCNTs and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) were then prepared by in‐situ or ex‐situ solution polymerization. The resulting solutions were electrospun into composite nanofibers. In the in‐situ polymerization, morphological observation revealed that f‐MWCNTs was uniformly dispersed along the axes of the nanofibers and increased interfacial adhesion between f‐MWCNTs and PAN. Furthermore, two kinds of f‐MWCNTs/PAN composite nanofibers had a higher degree of crystallization and a larger crystal size than PAN nanofibers had, so the specific tensile strengths and modulus of the composite nanofibers were enhanced. And the thermal stability of f‐MWCNTs/PAN from in‐situ method was higher than that of ex‐situ system. When the f‐MWCNTs content was less than 1 wt%, the specific tensile strengths and modulus of nanofibers were enhanced with increase in the amounts of f‐MWCNTs, and f‐MWCNTs/PAN of in‐situ system provided better mechanical properties than that of ex‐situ system. The nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of styrene was carried out on the surfaces of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) initiated by an MWNT‐supported initiator multiwalled carbon nanotube–2″,2″,6″,6″‐tetramethylpiperidinyloxy (MWNT–Tempo). The content of polystyrene grafted from the surface was controlled by changes in the polymerization conditions, such as the reaction times or the ratios of monomers to initiators. The obtained polystyrene‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT–PSs) were further used to initiate the polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine to get polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine)‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT–PS‐b‐P4VPs). In contrast to unmodified MWNTs, MWNT–PSs had relatively good dispersibility in various organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran, CHCL3, and o‐dichlorobenzene. The structures and properties of MWNT–PSs and MWNT–PS‐b‐P4VPs were characterized and studied with several methods, including thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet–visible, and transmission electron microscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was grafted onto amine treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (NH-MWNTs) and the physical and rheological properties of the NH-MWNTs–g-PMMA nanocomposites were investigated. The graft reaction of NH-MWNTs and the PMMA matrix was confirmed from the change of the N1S peaks, including those of amine oxygen and amide oxygen, by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The thermal and mechanical properties of the NH-MWNT–g-PMMA nanocomposites were enhanced by the graft reaction between NH-MWNTs and PMMA matrix. In addition, the viscosity of the nanocomposites was increased with the addition of NH-MWNTs. Storage (G′) and loss modulus (G″) were significantly increased by increase in the NH-MWNT content compared to acid-treated MWNTs/PMMA nanocomposites. This increase was attributed to the strong interaction by the grafting reaction between NH-MWNTs and the PMMA matrix.  相似文献

In this work, the polypropylene impact copolymers were synthesized by a modified sequential polymerization process. The copolymerization of ethylene and propylene was carried out between two homopolymerization stages at two different pressures and temperatures and the rheology, morphology and thermal properties of reactor alloys were studied. It is found that the ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) content increased up to 32 wt% by increasing the copolymerization time to 20 min. At a fixed copolymerization time of 10 min, the addition of 50 ppm hydrogen (H2), increased the EPR content from 9.7 to 12.8 wt%. By doubling H2 concentration, no considerable change in EPR wt% was observed. It is found that the zero shear viscosity of the alloys is significantly under the influence of EPR wt%, not the molecular weight of matrix. The molecular weight of PP matrices determined by rheological data, mildly decreased from 463000 to 458000 g/mol by increasing the copolymerization time from 10 min to 15 min. At high copolymerization time/high H2 concentration, a melting peak in the differential scanning calorimetry test around 165°C for isotactic PP and also an endothermic peak around 127°C for the block copolymer with long ethylene segments, is observed. The study of interfacial strength by theoretical emulsion models showed that 15 min copolymerization time is optimum considering EPR wt%.  相似文献

In this work, nanofibrous hydrogel has been fabricated from needleless electrospinning of Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in an aqueous solution with different concentrations. First, all solution samples were characterized for pH, surface tension, conductivity and viscosity. Next, electrospinnability of the PAA-water dope solution was investigated using the needleless electrospinning technique under constant conditions. Results indicated that the PAA-water solution was not electrospinnable. Therefore, the neutralization of carboxylic groups in the PAA chemical structure using the NaOH solution was investigated to enhance the PAA electrospinnability. Morphology observation revealed that the fiber diameters ranged from 40 to 250 nm and increased with increasing the solution concentrations. Increasing the neutralization degree (10%, 15% and 20% with 50 wt% NaOH solution) led to increase the dope viscosity and conductivity. The resultant nanofibers could be rendered water-insoluble by incorporating 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl-ether in the PAA-water dope solution, then heat-induced crosslinking was performed using a microwave at different curing times (1–5 min) and temperatures (45–105 °C). The nanofibrous hydrogel mat was then characterized by FTIR. The resulting nanofibrous hydrogel showed remarkable water absorption capacity up to 17,000% and 51,000% (within 15 min) in the standard saline solution and distilled water, respectively.  相似文献

In this study, colloidal systems with SiO2 nanoparticle as viscosity modifier additive were synthesized in the lubricating oil via an in situ Stober sol-gel method. The fluid characters of lubricating oil and viscosity variation were carefully investigated via rheological methods. The results showed that the lubricating oil transformed from Newtonian fluid to non-Newtonian fluid with increasing the concentration of nanoparticles, and smaller particles displayed better thickening effect toward lubricating oil. For the system with highly concentrated nanoparticle (20?wt%), the rheological behavior mainly depends on the size of nano-SiO2. The lubricating oil with smaller nano-SiO2 particles displayed higher structural strength and response rate, resulting in good recoverability after high-speed shear. The viscosity changed with temperature and also displayed a thermo-responsive behavior, which significantly alleviated the effect of shear thinning on the viscosity under high temperature. This study presented a new strategy for effectively tuning the fluid characters and modifying the viscosity of lubricating oils by adding highly concentrated inorganic nanoparticles.  相似文献

Fundamental understanding of the material science and rheological engineering to fabricate Torlon® 4000T-MV and 4000TF hollow fiber membranes with an ultra-thin and defect-free dense-selective layer for gas separation has been revealed. We have firstly investigated the rheology of Torlon® 4000T-MV and 4000TF dope solutions, and then determined the effect of temperature-correlated shear and elongational viscosities on the formation of Torlon® fibers for gas separation. Interestingly, Torlon® 4000T-MV and 4000TF possess different rheological characteristics: the elongational viscosity of Torlon® 4000T-MV/NMP solution shows strain thinning, while Torlon® 4000TF/NMP solution shows strain hardening. The balanced viscoelastic properties of dope solutions, which are strongly dependent on the spinning temperature, have been found to be crucial for the formation of a defect-free dense layer. The optimum rheological properties to fabricate Torlon® 4000T-MV/NMP hollow fibers appear at about 48–50 °C, and the resultant fibers have an O2/N2 selectivity of 8.37 and an apparent dense layer thickness of 781 Å. By comparison, the best Torlon® 4000TF fibers were spun at 24 °C with an O2/N2 selectivity of 8.96 and a dense layer of 1116 Å. The CO2/CH4 selectivity of the above two Torlon® variants is 47 and 53.5, respectively.  相似文献

Polypropylene random copolymer nanocomposites having 0.2–7.0 vol% multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared via melt processing. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to determine the nano scale dispersion of carbon nanotubes. Linear viscoelastic behavior of these nanocomposites was investigated using parallel plate rheometry. Incorporation of carbon nanotubes in the polymer matrix resulted in higher complex viscosity (η*), storage (G′) and loss modulus (G″) as compared to neat polymer, especially in the low-frequency region, suggesting a change from liquid to solid-like behavior in the nanocomposites. By plotting storage modulus vs. carbon nanotube loading and fitting with a power law function, the rheological percolation threshold in these nanocomposites was observed at a loading of ∼0.27 vol% of MWCNTs. However, electrical percolation threshold was reported at ∼0.19 vol% of MWCNTs loading. The difference in the percolation thresholds is understood in terms of nanotube connectivity with nanotubes and polymer chain required for electrical conductivity and rheological percolation.  相似文献

Hollow-fibre membranes were prepared by the wet-dry spinning technique from polyether sulfone (PES). The effect of spinning conditions such as the flow-rate of the internal coagulant and the flow-rate, composition and temperature of the polymer solution on the geometry and performance of hollow fibres was studied. In particular, five different ratios of pore former/polymer covering the range 0.2–1.0 were investigated while the polymer content was kept constant. Since the viscosity of the spinning dope affects the morphology of the hollow-fibre membrane, hollow fibres were prepared at different temperatures of the spinning dope from 25 to 60°. By scanning electron microscopy (SEM) two layers sandwiching a finger-like cavity structure were observed. Also, the surface on the bore side of the hollow fibre was modified by grafting polyethylene glycol (PEG) with γ-ray irradiation to improve the ultrafiltration performance.  相似文献
