Summary The International Atomic Energy Agency has been providing analytical quality control services (AQCS) to its Member States since the 1960's. The AQCS programme distributes reference materials (RMs), organizes intercomparison runs, and provides training courses for quality assurance in chemical analysis and radioactivity measurements of food, biological, environmental and marine materials. This paper focusses on those aspects of the subject dealing with reference materials and intercomparison runs for the determination of radionuclides. Nineteen natural matrix reference materials are available for the determination of radionuclides. Twelve new intercomparison and reference materials are in preparation or under consideration. The radionuclides of interest include: K-40, Mn-54, Co-60, Sr-90, Tc-99, Ru-106, Ba-133, Cs-134, Cs-137, Pb-210, Ra-226, Th-228, Th-232, Pu-238, Pu-239+240.  相似文献

The establishment of a quality management system is the best way to comply with international requirements concerning the achievement of confident and traceable analytical results. Some important points dealing with the technical factors of quality management in gamma-ray spectrometry of environmental samples are discussed. The experience obtained from analytical procedure validation is presented. Results of the application of standardized procedures to the analysis of ALMERA intercomparison samples, as well as the outcome of the utilization of certified reference materials for the quality control of measurement are presented. In fact, the implantation of simple technical principles reports reliable results and allows to elevate the quality of the measurements at a cost relatively low according to the real possibilities of the small laboratories, even in developing countries.  相似文献

Instrumental neutron activation analysis has been applied in the determination of toxic and other trace elements in a set of three algae materials provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency, with the aim of environmental preservation through enhanced applications of nuclear analytical techniques. The quality of the analysis method has been evaluated by analyzing a number of biological standard reference materials. By adding mineral nutrients, the cultivation of algae for metals is enhanced, in particular, selected toxic heavy metals such as As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb. It is believed that the level of elemental concentration in algae samples are dependent on environmental conditions due to its biochemical properties. Therefore, algae materials may be useful as an indicator or controller of environmental water pollution.  相似文献

Under the auspices of the Comité Consultatif pour la Quantité de Matière (CCQM) a laboratory intercomparison, CCQM-P68, was co-ordinated by the National Measurement Institute of Australia (NMIA) in 2005 involving the analysis of the steroid 19-norandrosterone (19-NA) in human urine. 19-NA is the major metabolite of nandrolone, a commonly abused anabolic agent. It is routinely tested by many sports drug testing laboratories and several national metrology institutes have developed reference methods to provide reference values for the certification of reference materials. The material distributed for the intercomparison was a freeze-dried human urine candidate reference material containing 19-NA at a level close to the allowed World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) cut-off for this anabolic agent, i.e. 2 ng/ml. Four national/designated metrology institutes participated in the intercomparison and their results for this complex analysis were in excellent agreement, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of only 1.7%. The expanded uncertainties at the 95% level of confidence for the reported results ranged from 3.7 to 7.0% at the 2.15 ng/g level.  相似文献

For many years the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been promoting analytical quality assurance and quality control in its Member States with emphasis on measurands that are amenable to analysis by nuclear and related techniques, i.e. radionuclides, trace elements, and stable isotopes. This paper reviews briefly the rationale for some of these activities, particularly in relation to the needs of participants in developing countries arising out of co-ordinated research programmes, technical co-operation projects and global and regional networks. Emphasis is given to biological and environmental reference materials with a matrix of natural origin. Also described are some activities arising out of the requirements of ISO-25 and other relevant international quality standards.  相似文献

Two new human hair reference materials, with different levels of mercury and methylmercury, have been developed and characterized by the International Atomic Energy Agency, for use in validation of measurements for mercury exposure. The set of materials consists of IAEA-086, with a low level of methylmercury, and IAEA-085, with an elevated methylmercury level. An international intercomparison exercise was carried out, and 68 institutes from 40 countries have contributed data. Based on the evaluation of the results from the intercomparison and analyses by expert laboratories, values of 23.2 and 0.57 mg/kg total mercury are recommended for IAEA-085 and IAEA-086, respectively. Values for methylmercury are recommended at 22.9 mg/kg, MeHg as Hg, for IAEA-085, and at 0.26 mg/kg, MeHg as Hg, for IAEA-086. Recommended and information values are also given for other selected trace elements.  相似文献

The production of reference materials for quality control of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) speciation in environmental samples is described. It concerns in the first place two lyophilized solutions containing Cr(III) and Cr(VI) at different concentrations, respectively representative for drinking water and filter leaching solutions, and in the second place filters loaded with welding dust. Twenty-four laboratories with experience in the field participated in an intercomparison exercise organized to validate the suitability of the reference materials and to gauge the state-of-the-art of Cr speciation throughout Europe. Aspects of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Analytical Quality Control Services (AQCS) for marine environmental studies are discussed, focusing on recent laboratory performance studies (LPS) and the production of reference materials for trace metals and organic compounds in various marine matrices. The IAEA has organized seventeen global interlaboratory studies for a range of organic contaminants. Of note has been the inclusion of numerous polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs) and some sterols of anthropogenic origin. Concurrently, there have been eleven worldwide intercomparison exercises for trace metals in the marine environment, most of which included methylmercury. Although such interlaboratory studies can help improve performance in individual laboratories and regional laboratory networks, the results reveal that problems remain in the determination of some metals and many organic contaminants.  相似文献

Summary The use of rapeseed cake is limited by the presence of a number of antinutritional factors the most important of which are glucosinolates. Introduction by EEC of a premium to produce rapeseed with low glucosinolate content has brought the need for reference material and accurate official methods of analysis. This paper summarises the work, begun at the end of 1987, to prepare three batches rapeseed materials (cleaning, mixing and packaging) for an intercomparison of methods. Details are presented of homogeneity and stability studies and the results of the intercomparison are discussed. One of the batches was prepared in sufficient quantity to serve as a reference material and the reference value for the total glucosinolate content of this sample was obtained from the results of the intercomparison.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) maintains a database of biological and environmental reference materials of natural origin (human and animal tissues, foods, plants, soils, sediments, etc.) for trace elements, radionuclides, stable isotopes, organic contaminants and other related measurands. The purpose is to help analysts to select reference materials for quality assurance purposes that match as closely as possible (i.e., with respect to matrix type and concentrations of the measurands of interest) the real samples that are to be analyzed. Former versions of this database were prepared in co-operation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and provided as hardcopies free of charge. The latest version was from 1995. More recently the database has been updated by the IAEA so that it now contains more than 22,500 values (mass fraction or concentration) for 660 different measurands and 1,705 reference materials developed by 56 producers from 22 countries. This paper gives an overview of the structure and content of the database and of the two ways it may be browsed. Emphasis is given to reference materials that are intended to verifying analysis for radioanalytical measurements. The database is soon accessible on-line, cost-free, via the internet.  相似文献

 In order to ensure quality assurance in large-scale environmental contamination studies involving many different analytical laboratories, the use of calibrated reference materials is essential. Prior to a survey of atmospheric metal deposition in 1995 comprising 20 countries and covering large parts of Europe, the lack of suitable reference materials of moss and organic-rich soil was apparent. In order to improve the quality of analytical data to be produced in this international survey, candidate analytical laboratories were invited to participate in an intercomparison exercise. Three moss and three soil humus reference samples specifically prepared for this purpose were distributed anonymously among the laboratories, which were asked to report data for ten priority elements (V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, Pb) and as many additional elements as they determined normally. In this paper the analytical data from the intercomparison are evaluated, and recommended values for the ten priority elements and 17 additional elements (B, Na, Mg, Al, S, K, Ca, Mn, Co, Se, Rb, Sr, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Th) in each of the six reference samples are established. The NOAA National Status and Trends (NS&T) Program determines the current status of, and changes over time in the environmental health of U.S estuarine and coastal waters. Concentrations of organic and inorganic contaminants are determined in bivalves, bottom-dwelling fish and sediments. The quality of the analytical data generated by the NS&T Program is over-seen by the performance-based Quality Assurance Project, which is designed to document sampling protocols, analytical procedures, and laboratory performance, and to reduce intralaboratory and interlaboratory variation. All NS&T cooperating laboratories are required to participate in yearly intercomparison exercises. The analysis of reference materials, such as the National Research Council of Canada's Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) and National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Standard Reference Materials (SRMs), and of control materials, is required. Because of the need for marine matrix reference materials and standards, NOAA contributed to the production of eight NIST SRMs and seven internal standard solutions. Analytical data from all control materials and all matrix reference materials are reported to the Program office.  相似文献

Four algae reference materials, IAEA-391, 392, 393 and IAEA-140, prepared by the International Atomic Energy Agency for intercomparison under different preparation conditions were analyzed for 24 elements. Conventional neutron activation analysis (NAA) was used to determine Al, Ca, Cl, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Sb, V and Zn and epithermal NAA using BN and Cd as shielding material for I, Br, As, Ni, Mo and Cd. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) as a complementary and comparative method was applied to determine Pb, Sn, Ni, Sr, Rb, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, V, Mo and Zn. Two analytical quality control standard reference materials IAEA-V-10 (hay powder) and IAEA-331 (spinach) were analyzed simultaneously with real samples. The results agree quite well with each other and with the certified values.  相似文献

The IAEA's Marine Environment Laboratory has been assisting laboratories in Analytical Quality Control Services (AQCS) for the analysis of radionuclides in the marine environment since the early seventies. AQCS through world-wide and regional intercomparison exercises and the provision of reference methods and reference materials (RM) have been recognized as an important component of quality assurance/quality control. A total of 43 intercomparison exercises were organized and 37 RM were produced for marine radioactivity studies. All important marine matrices were covered, e.g., seawater, marine sediments of different chemical compositions, fish, shellfish and seaplants. RM were prepared from samples collected at contaminated sites (e.g., the Irish Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Arabian Sea, Mururoa and Bikini Atolls, etc.) as well as from sites affected only by global fallout (e.g., the Pacific Ocean). Available RM are listed in the IAEA biennial catalogue and can be purchased at a minimal price. An overview of prepared RM for radionuclides in marine matrices is presented and discussed in more detail.  相似文献

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in co-operation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has recently prepared a survey on internationally available analytical reference materials for trace elements, nuclides and organic contaminants in biological, environmental and related matrices. The purpose is to help analysts to select reference materials for quality assurance that match as closely as possible, with respect to matrix type and concentrations of the measurands of interest, the “real” samples that are to be measured. The present version of the survey, which is available in the form of two cost-free printed volumes [1], contains over 10,000 certified and information values in 650 reference materials from 27 different producers. The 455 measurands listed include trace elements, major and minor elements, organic contaminants, organometallic compounds, radionuclides and stable isotopes. Currently, the database from which the survey has been produced is being modified and extended so as to make the data available in electronic form via the Internet. A procedure has been developed for the analysis of biological materials by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Fast, efficient and complete sample digestion is achieved by a combined microwave-nitric acid/open beaker-nitric acid-hydrogen peroxide procedure. The ICP-MS analysis is performed with an on-line five-element internal standard to correct for matrix and instrumental drift effects. Results are presented for 24 elements in three biological reference materials (National Institute of Standards and Technology Standard Reference Materials 5277a Liver and 1566 Oyster and International Atomic Energy Agency Certified Reference Material H4 Animal Muscle). For all elements significantly above the detection limit and reagent blank concentrations, good agreement exists between ICP-MS and certified values.  相似文献

Particle size distributions in fifteen International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and sixteen National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) reference materials (RMs) were measured with the basic aim to investigate the potential of these materials to be used as reference or quality control materials in analyses where a small sample mass is required (< 100 mg). Most of the investigated materials are commercially available environmental or biological natural matrix RMs with certified values for trace elements, radionuclides, or organometallic compounds. The laser diffraction technique was used in all measurements. From the point of particle size distribution, materials IAEA-390 (Algae, a set of three materials), IAEA-396m (Urban Dust, 3x air jet milled), NIST-SRM 1515 (Apple Leaves), NIST-SRM 1547 (Peach Leaves), NIST-SRM 1566a (Oyster Tissue), NIST-SRM 1570a (Spinach), NIST-SRM 1573a (Tomato Leaves), and NIST-SRM 1648 (Urban Particulate) can be considered appropriate for small sample mass analysis. However, additional analytical tests are needed to confirm the appropriate homogeneous distribution of chemical composition, the level of heterogeneity for individual elements, at this sample mass level.  相似文献

A quality management system has been designed for process analyses in wastewater plants. The quality management concept consists of a quality manual, quality control charts used together with certified reference materials, and proficiency testing. Certified reference materials have been used to eliminate basic analytical errors. Proficiency testing has been conducted by VKI, the Reference Laboratory for Environmental Chemistry, subcontracted by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. In the first proficiency test the analytical quality was comparable in general to the quality of routine environmental laboratories. One of the simplified analytical systems resulted, however, in a low recovery of nitrate in wastewater. The COD results reported in the proficiency test were slightly higher than the theoretical values.  相似文献

The production of reference materials for environmental analysis started in the Joint Research Centre at Ispra/Italy in 1972 with the objective of later certification by the BCR, but for obvious budget reasons only a fraction of the total production achieved at Ispra ever reached certification level, although all materials were produced according to the severe quality requirements requested for certified reference materials. Therefore, the materials not destinated to certification are in growing demand as inter-laboratory test materials and as laboratory reference materials, for internal quality control, e.g., by control charts. The history of reference material production within the Joint Research Centre is briefly reviewed and the latest additions described. New developments such as micro-scale reference materials intended for analytical methods requiring sample intakes at milligram or sub-milligram level and therefor not finding supply on the reference material market, and "wet" environmental reference materials, which meet more precisely the "real-world" environmental analysis conditions, are presented and the state-of-the-art discussed.  相似文献

In the paper are presented results of potassium, uranium, thorium and radium measurements performed on the natural marine sediment sample SD-N-1/2 in the framework of the IAEA-organized worldwide intercomparison exercise. Analytical methods applied in this exercise were evaluated for performance and significance of the observed discrepancies are discussed in the light of statistical and operative criteria. Possible sources of error have been identified in alpha and gamma spectrometric measurements and suggestions are given about how to avoid them. Well characterized reference materials based on natural matrices have been shown helpful in achieving better data comparability in low level measurements of environmental radioactivity.  相似文献
