The migration of a spherical particle immersed in a viscoelastic liquid flowing in a microchannel with a triangular cross-section is investigated by direct numerical simulations under inertialess conditions. The viscoelastic fluid is modeled through two constitutive equations to investigate the effect of the second normal stress difference and the resulting secondary flows on the migration phenomenon. The results are presented in terms of trajectories followed by the particles released at different initial positions over the channel cross-section in a wide range of Weissenberg numbers and confinement ratios. Particles suspended in a fluid with a negligible second normal stress difference migrate toward the channel centerline or the closest wall, depending on their initial position. A much more complex dynamics is found for particles suspended in a fluid with a relevant second normal stress difference due to the appearance of secondary flows that compete with the migration phenomenon. Depending on the Weissenberg number and confinement ratio, additional equilibrium positions (points or closed orbits) may appear. In this case, the channel centerline becomes unstable and the particles are driven to the corners or “entrapped” in recirculation regions within the channel cross-section. The inversion of the centerline stability can be exploited to design efficient size-based separation devices.  相似文献

Microfluidic particle focusing has been a vital prerequisite step in sample preparation for downstream particle separation, counting, detection, or analysis, and has attracted broad applications in biomedical and chemical areas. Besides all the active and passive focusing methods in Newtonian fluids, particle focusing in viscoelastic fluids has been attracting increasing interest because of its advantages induced by intrinsic fluid property. However, to achieve a well-defined focusing position, there is a need to extend channel lengths when focusing micrometer-sized or sub-microsized particles, which would result in the size increase of the microfluidic devices. This work investigated the sheathless viscoelastic focusing of particles and cells in a zigzag microfluidic channel. Benefit from the zigzag structure of the channel, the channel length and the footprint of the device can be reduced without sacrificing the focusing performance. In this work, the viscoelastic focusing, including the focusing of 10 μm polystyrene particles, 5 μm polystyrene particles, 5 μm magnetic particles, white blood cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), and cancer cells, were all demonstrated. Moreover, magnetophoretic separation of magnetic and nonmagnetic particles after viscoelastic pre-focusing was shown. This focusing technique has the potential to be used in a range of biomedical applications.  相似文献

We propose here a new method for continuous concentration and classification of particles in microfluidic devices, named hydrodynamic filtration. When a particle is flowing in a microchannel, the center position of the particle cannot be present in a certain distance from sidewalls, which is equal to the particle radius. The proposed method utilizes this fact, and is performed using a microchannel having multiple side branch channels. By withdrawing a small amount of liquid repeatedly from the main stream through the side channels, particles are concentrated and aligned onto the sidewalls. Then the concentrated and aligned particles can be collected according to size through other side channels (selection channels) in the downstream of the microchannel. Therefore, continuous introduction of a particle suspension into the microchannel enables both particle concentration and classification at the same time. In this method, the flow profile inside a precisely fabricated microchannel determines the size limit of the filtered substances. So the filtration can be performed even when the channel widths are much larger than the particle size, without the problem of channel clogging. In this study, concentrations of polymer microspheres with diameters of 1-3 microm were increased 20-50-fold, and they were collected independently according to size. In addition, selective enrichment of leukocytes from blood was successfully performed.  相似文献

We perform 3D numerical simulations, heuristic modeling and microfluidic experiments to demonstrate, for the first time, the presence of a bistability scenario for transversal migration of particles suspended in a viscoelastic liquid flowing in a pipe. Our results show that particle migration, either at the centerline or at the wall, can be controlled by the rheological properties of the suspending liquid and by the relative dimensions of the particle and tube. Proper selection of these parameters can promote strict aligning of particles on a line, i.e., 3-D focusing. Simple design rules are given to rationally control particle focusing under flow in micropipes.  相似文献

Herein, we proposed a strategy for controlling the particle focusing position in Dean‐coupled elasto‐inertial flows via adjusting the polymer concentration of viscoelastic fluids. The physics behind the control strategy was then explored and discussed. At high polymer concentrations, the flowing particles could be single‐line focused exactly at the channel centerline under the dominated elastic force. The center‐line focusing in our spiral channel may employed as a potential pretreatment scheme for microflow cytometry detection. With further decreasing polymer concentrations, the particles would shift into the outer channel region under the comparable competition between inertial lift force, elastic force and Dean drag force. Finally, the observed position‐shifting was successfully employed for particle concentration at a throughput much higher than most existing elasto‐inertial microfluidics.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the influence of molecular-scale surface roughness on the slip behavior in thin liquid films. The slip length increases almost linearly with the shear rate for atomically smooth rigid walls and incommensurate structures of the liquid/solid interface. The thermal fluctuations of the wall atoms lead to an effective surface roughness, which makes the slip length weakly dependent on the shear rate. With increasing the elastic stiffness of the wall, the surface roughness smoothes out and the strong rate dependence is restored again. Both periodically and randomly corrugated rigid surfaces reduce the slip length and its shear rate dependence.  相似文献

Elastic nature of the viscoelastic fluids induces lateral migration of particles into a single streamline and can be used by microfluidic based flow cytometry devices. In this study, we investigated focusing efficiency of polyethylene oxide based viscoelastic solutions at varying ionic concentration to demonstrate their use in impedimetric particle characterization systems. Rheological properties of the viscoelastic fluid and particle focusing performance are not affected by ionic concentration. We investigated the viscoelastic focusing dynamics using polystyrene (PS) beads and human red blood cells (RBCs) suspended in the viscoelastic fluid. Elasto‐inertial focusing of PS beads was achieved with the combination of inertial and viscoelastic effects. RBCs were aligned along the channel centerline in parachute shape which yielded consistent impedimetric signals. We compared our impedance‐based microfluidic flow cytometry results for RBCs and PS beads by analyzing particle transit time and peak amplitude at varying viscoelastic focusing conditions obtained at different flow rates. We showed that single orientation, single train focusing of nonspherical RBCs can be achieved with polyethylene oxide based viscoelastic solution that has been shown to be a good candidate as a carrier fluid for impedance cytometry.  相似文献

Recent experiments indicate that liquid crystals can be used to optically report the presence of biomolecules adsorbed at solid surfaces. In this work, numerical simulations are used to investigate the effects of biological molecules, modeled as spherical particles, on the structure and dynamics of nematic ordering. In the absence of adsorbed particles, a nematic in contact with a substrate adopts a uniform orientational order, imposed by the boundary conditions at this surface. It is found that the relaxation to this uniform state is slowed down by the presence of a small number of adsorbed particles. However, beyond a critical concentration of adsorbed particles, the liquid crystal ceases to exhibit uniform orientational order at long times. At this concentration, the domain growth is characterized by a first regime where the average nematic domain size LD obeys the scaling law LDt approximately t1/2; at long times, a slow dynamics regime is attained for which LD tends to a finite value corresponding to a metastable state with a disordered texture. The results of simulations are consistent with experimental observations.  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated the strong influences of fluid rheological properties on insulator-based dielectrophoresis (iDEP) in single-constriction microchannels. However, it is yet to be understood how iDEP in non-Newtonian fluids depends on the geometry of insulating structures. We report in this work an experimental study of fluid rheological effects on streaming DEP in a post-array microchannel that presents multiple contractions and expansions. The iDEP focusing and trapping of particles in a viscoelastic polyethylene oxide solution are comparable to those in a Newtonian buffer, which is consistent with the observations in a single-constriction microchannel. Similarly, the insignificant iDEP effects in a shear-thinning xanthan gum solution also agree with those in the single-constriction channel except that gel-like structures are observed to only form in the post-array microchannel under large DC electric fields. In contrast, the iDEP effects in both viscoelastic and shear-thinning polyacrylamide solution are significantly weaker than in the single-constriction channel. Moreover, instabilities occur in the electroosmotic flow and appear to be only dependent on the DC electric field. These phenomena may be associated with the dynamics of polymers as they are electrokinetically advected around and through the posts.  相似文献

Elastic-inertial focusing has attracted increasing interest in recent years due to the three-dimensional (3D) single-train focusing ability it offers. However, multi-train focusing, instead of single-train focusing, was observed in viscoelastic fluids with low elasticity as a result of the competition between inertia effect and viscoelasticity effect. To address this issue, we employed the secondary flow to facilitate single-train elastic-inertial focusing in low elasticity viscoelastic fluids. A three-section contraction-expansion channel was designed to induce the secondary flow to pinch the multiplex focusing trains into a single one exactly at the channel centerline. After demonstrating the focusing process and mechanism in our device, we systematically explored and discussed the effects of particle diameter, operational flow rate, polymer concentration, and channel dimension on particle focusing performances. Our device enables single-train focusing of particles in viscoelastic fluids with low elasticity, and offers advantages of planar single-layer structure, and sheathless, external-field free operation.  相似文献

Insulator-based dielectrophoretic (iDEP) microdevices have been limited to work with Newtonian fluids. We report an experimental study of the fluid rheological effects on iDEP focusing and trapping of polystyrene particles in polyethylene oxide, xanthan gum, and polyacrylamide solutions through a constricted microchannel. Particle focusing and trapping in the mildly viscoelastic polyethylene oxide solution are slightly weaker than in the Newtonian buffer. They are, however, significantly improved in the strongly viscoelastic and shear thinning polyacrylamide solution. These observed particle focusing behaviors exhibit a similar trend with respect to electric field, consistent with a revised theoretical analysis for iDEP focusing in non-Newtonian fluids. No apparent focusing of particles is achieved in the xanthan gum solution, though the iDEP trapping can take place under a much larger electric field than the other fluids. This is attributed to the strong shear thinning-induced influences on both the electroosmotic flow and electrokinetic/dielectrophoretic motions.  相似文献

We report results of dissipative particle dynamics simulations and develop a semi-analytical theory of an anisotropic flow in a parallel-plate channel with two superhydrophobic striped walls. Our approach is valid for any local slip at the gas sectors and an arbitrary distance between the plates, ranging from a thick to a thin channel. It allows us to optimize area fractions, slip lengths, channel thickness, and texture orientation to maximize a transverse flow. Our results may be useful for extracting effective slip tensors from global measurements, such as the permeability of a channel, in experiments or simulations, and may also find applications in passive microfluidic mixing.  相似文献

Saliva and blood plasma are non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluids that play essential roles in the transport of particulate matters (e.g., food and blood cells). However, whether the viscoelasticity of such biofluids alters the dynamics of suspended particles is still unknown. In this study, we report that under pressure-driven microflows of both human saliva and blood plasma, spherical particles laterally migrate and form a focused stream along the channel centerline by their viscoelastic properties. We observed that the particle focusing varied among samples on the basis of sampling times/donors, thereby demonstrating that the viscoelasticity of the human biofluids can be affected by their compositions. We showed that the particle focusing, observed in bovine submaxillary mucin solutions, intensified with the increase in mucin concentration. We expect that the findings from this study will contribute to the understanding of the physiological roles of viscoelasticity of human biofluids.  相似文献

We present a mean-field theory to describe phase separations in mixtures of a nematic liquid crystal and a colloidal particle. The theory takes into account an orientational ordering of liquid crystals and a crystalline ordering of colloidal particles. We calculate phase diagrams on the temperature-concentration plane, depending on interactions between a liquid crystal and a colloidal surface and a coupling between nematic and crystalline ordering. We find various phase separation processes, such as a nematic-crystal phase separation and nematic-isotropic-crystal triple point. Inside binodal curves, we find new unstable and metastable regions which are important in phase ordering dynamics. We also find a stable nematic-crystalline (NC) phase, where colloidal particles dispersed in a nematic phase can form a crystalline structure. The coexistence between two NC phases with different concentrations can be appear though the coupling between nematic and crystalline ordering.  相似文献

This paper presents Stokesian dynamics simulations of experiments involving one or two charged colloids near either a single charged wall or confined between parallel charged walls. Equilibrium particle-particle and particle-wall interactions are interpreted from dynamic particle trajectories in simulations involving (1) a single particle levitated above a wall, (2) two particles below a wall, and (3) two particles confined between two parallel walls. By specifying only repulsive electrostatic Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) potentials and including multibody hydrodynamics, we successfully recover expected potentials in some cases, while anomalous attraction is observed in other cases. Attraction inferred in the latter simulations displays quantitative agreement with literature measurements when particle dynamics are interpreted using reported analyses. Because anomalous attraction is reproduced in simulations using only electrostatic repulsive DLVO potentials, our results reveal the one-dimensional analyses to be invalid for configurations that are inherently multidimensional via multibody hydrodynamics. Parameters related to experimental sampling of particle dynamics are also found to be critical for obtaining accurate potentials. We explain the anomalous attraction in each experiment using effective potentials, which can be employed in an a priori fashion to assist the confident design of future experiments involving interfacial and confined colloids. Ultimately, our findings reveal the importance of dimensionality and multibody hydrodynamics for understanding nonequilibrium dynamics of colloids near surfaces.  相似文献

The wall effects on electrophoretic motion of spherical polystyrene particles in a rectangular poly(dimethylsiloxane) microchannel were studied experimentally. It is found that the particle electrophoretic velocity is insensitive to the trajectory between the channel sidewalls, consistent with the theoretical prediction. We also demonstrate that the electrophoretic motion of larger particles along the channel centerline is more viscously retarded by the sidewalls of a narrower channel. This observation is well predicted by incorporating the analytical models for the particle electrophoresis along the centerline of a slit channel and along the axis of a cylindrical pore.  相似文献

The enrichment and focusing of the nano-/submicroparticle (e.g., 150–1000 nm microvesicle shed from the plasma membrane) in the viscoelastic fluid has great potentials in the biomedical and clinical applications such as the disease diagnosis and the prognostic test for liquid biopsy. However, due to the small size and the resulting weak hydrodynamic force, the efficient manipulation of the nano-/submicroparticle by the passive viscoelastic microfluidic technology remains a major challenge. For instance, a typically long channel length is often required to achieve the focusing or the separation of the nano-/submicroparticle, which makes it difficult to be integrated in small chip area. In this work, a microchannel with gradually contracted cross-section and high aspect ratio (the ratio of the height to the average width of channel) is utilized to enhance the hydrodynamic force and change the force direction, eventually leading to the efficient enrichment of nano-/submicroparticles (500 and 860 nm) in a short channel length (2 cm). The influence of the flow rate, the particle size, the solid concentration, and the channel geometry on the enrichment of the nano-/submicroparticles are investigated. With simple structure, small footprint, easy operation, and good performance, the present device would be a promising platform for various lab-chip microvesicle-related biomedical research and disease diagnosis.  相似文献

The zeta potentials of channel surfaces and tracer particles are of importance to the design of electrokinetic microfluidic devices, the characterization of channel materials, and the quantification of the microparticle image velocimetry (microPIV) measurement of EOFs. A method is proposed to simultaneously measure the zeta potentials of the channel surface and the tracer particles in aqueous solutions using the microPIV technique. Through the measurement of the steady velocity distributions of the tracer particles in both open- and closed-end rectangular microchannels under the same water chemistry condition, the electrophoretic velocity of the tracer particles and the EOF field of the microchannel are determined using the expressions derived in this study for the velocity distributions of charged tracer particles in the open- and closed-end rectangular microchannels. Thus, the zeta potentials of the tracer particles and the channel surfaces are simultaneously obtained using the least-square method to fit the microPIV measured velocity distribution of the tracer particles. Measurements were carried out with a microPIV system to determine the zeta potentials of the channel wall and the fluorescent tracer particles in deionized water and sodium chloride and boric acid solutions of various concentrations.  相似文献

Theoretical expressions are developed to describe self-diffusion in submonolayer colloidal fluids that require only equilibrium structural information as input. Submonolayer colloidal fluids are defined for the purpose of this work to occur when gravity confines colloids near a planar wall surface so that they behave thermodynamically as two dimensional fluids. Expressions for self-diffusion are generalized to consider different colloid and surface interaction potentials and interfacial concentrations from infinite dilution to near fluid-solid coexistence. The accuracy of these expressions is demonstrated by comparing self-diffusion coefficients predicted from Monte Carlo simulated equilibrium particle configurations with standard measures of self-diffusion evaluated from Stokesian Dynamics simulated particle trajectories. It is shown that diffusivities predicted for simulated equilibrium fluid structures via multibody hydrodynamic resistance tensors and particle distribution functions display excellent agreement with values computed from mean squared displacements and autocorrelation functions of simulated tracer particles. Results are obtained for short and long time self-diffusion both parallel and normal to underlying planar wall surfaces in fluids composed of particles having either repulsive electrostatic or attractive van der Waals interactions. The demonstrated accuracy of these expressions for self-diffusion should allow their direct application to experiments involving submonolayer colloidal fluids having a range of interaction potentials and interfacial concentrations.  相似文献
