We report on a facile route to synthesize snowman‐like asymmetric composite particles via γ‐ray initiated seeded emulsion polymerization after a hydrolytic condensation process on the surface of second monomer swollen poly(styrene‐divinylbenzene‐acrylic acid) seeds. Effects of the amounts and kinds of second monomer and inorganic precursor, different radiation polymerization conditions including dose rates and absorbed doses on the morphology of the obtained particles were investigated. The obtained asymmetric particles can serve as ideal solid surfactants to stabilize the water‐in‐oil emulsions, and soap‐free hierarchical materials were obtained by polymerization of monomers in water or oil phase. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylic polymer/silica organic–inorganic hybrid emulsions were synthesized by a simple method, that is, a conventional emulsion polymerization and subsequent sol–gel process, to provide water‐based coating materials. The acrylic polymer emulsions contained a silane coupling agent monomer, such as methacryloxypropyltriethoxysilane, to form highly solvent‐resistant hybrid films. On the other hand, the hybrid films from the surface‐modified polymer emulsions, in which the silane coupling agent was located only on the surface of the polymer particles and the particle core was not crosslinked, did not exhibit high solvent resistance. A honeycomblike array structure, which was derived from the polymer particles (diameter ≈ 50 nm) and the silica domain, on the hybrid film surfaces was observed by atomic force microscopy. The crosslinked core part and silane coupling agent containing the shell part of the polymer particles played important roles in attaining high solvent resistance. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reactive surfactants allow the surfactant molecules to become covalently bound to the particles and thus provide added stability to the colloid particles, longer shelf life, better shear resistance, and polymer particles that can be redispersed. This article reports for the first time the use of a novel addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer reactive surfactant (transurf) in ab initio emulsion polymerizations of methyl methacrylate at 70 °C. It was found that the rate was lowered and average particle diameter nearly doubled when the transurf was used as compared with the SDS experiments (control). In addition the molecular weight distribution was very broad but had a lower Mn than observed in the sodium dodecyl sulfate experiment. Unfortunately because of the formation of many water‐soluble oligomers, the amount of transurf incorporated could not be obtained accurately. However, it was estimated theoretically that only a very small amount of transurf would be consumed, but for an alternative method to increase the incorporation of transurf into the particles, the ratio of monomer to transurf must be kept as low as possible. The best way to achieve this would be to carry the experiments out under starved‐feed conditions. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 2813–2820, 2001  相似文献

Organic–inorganic hybrid particles have many potential applications, but almost all research has been focused on hybrid particles with one kind of inorganic nanoparticle. This article presents a novel and facile preparation approach for raspberry‐like silica/polystyrene/silica multilayer hybrid particles via miniemulsion polymerization. In this method, larger, surface‐modified silica particles are first dispersed into monomer droplets to form a miniemulsion, and then raspberry‐like silica/polystyrene/silica multilayer hybrid particles are directly obtained when miniemulsion polymerization is performed in the presence of smaller, unmodified silica particles with 4‐vinylpyridine as an auxiliary monomer. Influential parameters such as the amount of 4‐vinylpyridine, the surfactant concentration, and the pH value of the system have been investigated. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylic polymer/silica hybrids were prepared by emulsifier‐free emulsion polymerization and the sol–gel process. Acrylic polymer emulsions containing triethoxysilyl groups were synthesized by emulsifier‐free batch emulsion polymerization. The acrylic polymer/silica hybrid films prepared from the acrylic polymer emulsions and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were transparent and solvent‐resistant. Atomic force microscopy studies of the hybrid film surface suggested that the hybrid films did not contain large (e.g., micrometer‐size) silica particles, which could be formed because of the organic–inorganic phase separation. The Si? O? Si bond formed by the cocondensation of TEOS and the triethoxysilyl groups on the acrylic polymer increased the miscibility between the acrylic polymer component and the silica component in the hybrid films, in which the nanometer‐size silica domains (particles) were dispersed homogeneously in the acrylic polymer component. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article presents a novel and facile preparation method of hollow silica spheres with loading small silica inside. In this approach, positively charged SiO2/polystyrene core‐shell composite particles were synthesized first, when the silica shells from the sol‐gel process of tetraethoxysilane were then coated on the surfaces of composite particles via electrostatic interaction, the polystyrene was dissolved subsequently even synchronously in the same medium to form hollow silica spheres with small silica cores. TEM, SEM, and FTIR measurements were used to characterize these composite spheres. Based on this study, some inorganic or organic compounds could be loaded into these hollow silica spheres. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 3431–3439, 2007  相似文献

This article presents a facile, effective, mild synthesis process for well‐defined hollow spheres by using cationic polystyrene (PS) submicro‐particles as templates. In this approach, the cationic PS templates can be first prepared via emulsifier‐free polymerization by using the cationic monomer 2‐(methacryloyloxy) ethyltrimethylammonium chloride as comonomer, then, the silica shells from the sol‐gel process of tetraethoxysilane were coated on the surfaces of template particles via electrostatic interaction, finally the PS was dissolved in situ by modification of the reaction conditions in the same medium to form monodisperse hollow silica spheres with controlled shell thickness. Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscope measurements were used to characterize these hollow silica spheres. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid silica/polystyrene nanoparticles were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. With the objective to prepare core‐shell hybrid nanoparticles having narrow particle size distributions (PSDs) as well as a high degree of silica encapsulation, the effect of adding surface modifiers, the size of silica nanoparticles, the ratio styrene/silica, the surfactant concentration, and the presence of ethanol in the reaction mixture were studied. A synergistic effect was observed using oleic acid (OA) together with 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TPM) in the compatibilization step between the organic phase (monomer) and inorganic nanoparticles (silica). Mono and multinuclear eccentric core‐shell hybrid nanoparticles were obtained. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 935–948, 2009  相似文献

Silica–polystyrene core‐shell particles were successfully prepared by surface‐mediated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene monomer from the surfaces of the silica‐supported RAFT agents. Initially, macro‐RAFT agents were synthesized by RAFT polymerization of γ‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) in the presence of chain transfer agents (CTAs). Immobilization of CTAs onto the silica surfaces was then performed by reacting silica with macro‐RAFT agents via a silane coupling. Grafting of polymer onto silica forms core‐shell nanostructures and shows a sharp contrast between silica core and polymer shell in the phase composition. The thickness of grafted‐polymer shell and the diameter of core‐shell particles increase with the increasing ratio of monomer to silica. A control experiment was carried out by conventional free radical emulsion copolymerization of MPS‐grafted silica and styrene under comparable conditions. The resulting data provide further insight into the chemical composition of grafted‐polymers that are grown from the silica surface through RAFT process. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Raspberrylike organic/inorganic composite spheres are prepared by stepwise electrostatic assembly of polyelectrolytes and silica nanoparticles onto monodisperse polystyrene spheres. Hierarchically structured porous films of silica hollow spheres are fabricated from these composite spheres by layer‐by‐layer assembly with polyelectrolytes followed by calcination. The morphologies of the raspberrylike organic/inorganic composite spheres and the derived hierarchically structured porous films are observed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The surface properties of these films are investigated by measuring their water contact angles, water‐spreading speed, and antifogging properties. The results show that such hierarchically structured porous films of silica hollow spheres have unique superhydrophilic and antifogging properties. Finally, the formation mechanism of these nanostructures and property–structure relationships are discussed in detail on the basis of experimental observations.  相似文献

Stable high‐solids‐content methyl methacrylate/butylacrylate latexes with small particle sizes (in the range of 150–180 nm) were obtained with a nonionic polymerizable surfactant (surfmer). Three percent of surfmer with respect to monomer was proven to be enough for the stabilization of the latexes. The influence of different operational variables on the stabilization of the final latex was analyzed, and the conditions needed to obtain coagulum‐free latex were assessed. The inorganic potassium persulfate/sodium metabisulfite initiator system provided better stability than the organic tert‐butyl hydroperoxide/ascorbic acid as a result of the end groups. In addition, the feeding of acrylic acid during the second half of the polymerization improved the stability of the final latex. The reduction of the feeding time was effective in the stabilization. Proof of the surfmer incorporation into the particles is presented. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 1552–1559, 2002  相似文献

A series of SiO2/PMMA composite particles with different morphologies were prepared by conventional emulsion polymerization by the aid of acid–base interaction between the silanol groups of unmodified silica particles and the amino groups of 4‐vinylpyridine. In this approach, no surface treatment for nanosilica particles was required. The morphologies of composite particles, for example, multicore–shell, raspberry‐like, and conventional core–shell, could be controlled by modulating emulsifier content, monomer/silica ratio, silica size, and monomer feed method. The possible particle formation mechanisms were discussed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 3807–3816, 2006  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS) nanocomposite particles with high titania content are prepared by Pickering emulsion polymerization. A self‐made titania hydrosol modified by an anionic monomer sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS) is used as a stabilizer and photocatalyst. The stability of the emulsion system is greatly improved by the electrostatic interaction between negatively charged NaSS and positively charged titania nanoparticles. The nanocomposite spheres with the diameter of around 120 nm are highly charged, indicating titania‐rich surfaces of latex particles. It is also proven by the field‐emission transmission electron microscope and field‐emission scanning electron microscope images. The well‐defined core‐shell structure of the obtained PS/titania composite particles is confirmed by the formation of fragile hollow titania nanospheres after thermogravimetric analysis tests. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the synthesis of snowman‐like magnetic/nonmagnetic nanocomposite asymmetric particles (SMNAPs) via seeded emulsion polymerization initiated by γ‐ray radiation. In situ formation of magnetite in the presence of the emulsified poly(styrene‐divinylbenzene‐acrylic acid) microspheres affords raspberry‐like magnetic nanocomposite particles, which are used as seeds for further seeded emulsion polymerization induced by γ‐ray radiation. We study the effect of the kind of surfactant, the kind and content of second monomer, and the content of swelling agent on the morphologies of the final nanocomposite particles. It is found that SMNAPs can be fabricated in high yield using 12‐acryloxy‐9‐octadecenoic acid as the surfactant and styrene as the second monomer with the addition of 2‐butanone (a swelling agent). The as‐synthesized SMNAPs may serve as magnetically controllable solid surfactants to stabilize O/W immiscible mixtures, which preferentially orientated at the interface. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An easy and novel approach to the synthesis of functionalized nanostructured polymeric particles is reported. The surfactant‐free emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of the crosslinking reagent 2‐ethyl‐2‐(hydroxy methyl)‐1,3‐propanediol trimethacrylate was used to in situ crosslink colloid micelles to produce stable, crosslinked polymeric particles (diameter size ~ 100–300 nm). A functionalized methacrylate monomer, 2‐methacryloxyethyl‐2′‐bromoisobutyrate, containing a dormant atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) living free‐radical initiator, which is termed an inimer (initiator/monomer), was added to the solution during the polymerization to functionalize the surface of the particles with ATRP initiator groups. The surface‐initiated ATRP of different monomers was then carried out to produce core–shell‐type polymeric nanostructures. This versatile technique can be easily employed for the design of a wide variety of polymeric shells surrounding a crosslinked core while keeping good control over the sizes of the nanostructures. The particles were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, optical microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and Raman spectroscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the kinetics and mechanism of soap‐free emulsion polymerization of styrene using laponite platelets as stabilizers. The polymerization was initiated by potassium persulfate and the latex particles were stabilized by laponite platelets dispersed in water. Laponite adsorption on the polymer particles was enhanced by the addition of poly(ethylene glycol) monomethylether methacrylate (PEGMA). Particle nucleation can be described using the classical homogeneous nucleation mechanism followed by coagulation of unstable precursors. Oligomeric radicals formed in the water phase become insoluble and precipitate on the laponite surface leading to primary precursor particles composed of a few polymer chains and one or several clay platelets. Mature latex particles are then generated by coagulation and growth of the previously formed precursor particles. Both the nucleation and initial aggregation rates increased in the presence of PEGMA. Calorimetric monitoring of the polymerization allowed estimating the heat produced by the reaction and the monomer conversion. Hence, using the monomer material balance, the number of radicals in the polymer particles could be estimated precisely. The average number of radicals per particle, $ \bar n $ , was found to be high in the range 3–6. This result was attributed to strong attractive interactions between the growing radicals and the clay surface. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011.  相似文献

The sterically stabilized emulsion polymerization of styrene initiated by a water‐soluble initiator at different temperatures has been investigated. The rate of polymerization (Rp) versus conversion curve shows the two non‐stationary‐rate intervals typical for the polymerization proceeding under non‐stationary‐state conditions. The shape of the Rp versus conversion curve results from two opposite effects—the increased number of particles and the decreased monomer concentration at reaction loci as the polymerization advances. At elevated temperatures the monomer emulsion equilibrates to a two‐phase or three‐phase system. The upper phase is transparent (monomer), and the lower one is blue colored, typical for microemulsion. After stirring such a multiphase system and initiation of polymerization, the initial coarse polymer emulsion was formed. The average size of monomer/polymer particles strongly decreased up to about 40% conversion and then leveled off. The initial large particles are assumed to be highly monomer‐swollen particles formed by the heteroagglomeration of unstable polymer particles and monomer droplets. The size of the “highly monomer” swollen particles continuously decreases with conversion, and they merge with the growing particles at about 40–50% conversion. The monomer droplets and/or large highly monomer‐swollen polymer particles also serve as a reservoir of monomer and emulsifier. The continuous release of nonionic (hydrophobic) emulsifier from the monomer phase increases the colloidal stability of primary particles and the number of polymer particles, that is, the particle nucleation is shifted to the higher conversion region. Variations of the square and cube of the mean droplet radius with aging time indicate that neither the coalescence nor the Ostwald ripening is the main driving force for the droplet instability. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stable colloidal dispersions of nanostructured semifluorinated acrylic particles with an unfluorinated core and an outer layer consisting of copolymers of the highly hydrophobic and lipophobic heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate (FMA) were successfully synthesized with the assistance of three different cyclodextrins as phase‐transfer catalysts: β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD), hydroxypropyl β‐cyclodextrin (HpCD), and methyl β‐cyclodextrin (MeCD). While all the cyclodextrins form a stable inclusion complex (IC) with FMA, only the ICs with the more hydrophilic HpCD and MeCD are soluble in water. Nevertheless, incorporation of FMA in the particle shell copolymer could be achieved also when using β‐CD. On the other hand, the morphology of the nanostructured particles was characterized by a “patchy” fluorinated shell dependent on the cyclodextrin used, the best results being obtained with MeCD. A monomer‐starved semicontinuous emulsion polymerization procedure was essential to favor the CD‐mediated incorporation of FMA into the copolymer structure and to achieve a stable colloidal dispersion even in the presence of small amounts of mixed anionic–nonionic surfactants. The thermal and surface properties of the latex films showed a good correlation with the shell composition and patchy nanostructured morphology of the particles. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article describes the preparation of novolac‐type phenolic resin/silica hybrid organic–inorganic nanocomposite, with a sol–gel process. The coupling agent was used to improve the interface between the organic and inorganic phases. The effect of the structure of the nanocomposite on its physical and chemical properties is discussed. The coupling agent reacts with the resin to form covalent bonds. The structure of the modified hybrid nanocomposites was identified with a Fourier transform infrared spectroscope. The silica network was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (29Si NMR). Results revealed that Q4 (tetrasubstituted) and T3 (trisubstituted) are the dominant microstructures. The size of the silica in the phenolic resin was characterized with a scanning electron microscope. The size of the particles of inorganic silica in the modified system was less than 100 nm. The nanocomposite exhibited good transparency. Moreover, the thermal and mechanical properties exhibited significant improvement. The modified hybrid composite exhibited favorable thermal properties. The temperature at which a weight loss of 5% occurred increased from 281 to 350 °C. The flexural strength increased by 6–30%. The limiting oxygen index of the nanocomposite reached 37, and the Underwriters Laboratory test was 94V‐0. Consequently, these materials possess excellent flame‐retardant properties. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 905–913, 2003  相似文献

A silica‐particle‐supported zwitterionic polymeric monolithic column, shortened as supported column (S‐column), was prepared by the in situ polymerization of methacrylic acid, ethylene dimethacrylate, and 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate in the presence of a ternary porogenic solvent containing water, methanol, and cyclohexanol in a 250 μm id fused‐silica capillary prepacked with 5 μm bare silica particles. In the S‐column, a thin layer of the polymers was formed around the silica particles in the form of nanoglobules, leaving the interstitial spaces between the particles free for liquid flow. The effects of the preparation conditions on the morphology of the monolith were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and backpressure measurements. The selected volumetric ratio of porogens, monomer concentration, polymerization time, and temperature are 1:1:8 (water/methanol/cyclohexanol), 25% v/v, 5 h, and 60°C, respectively. The S‐column was evaluated by comparison with its conventional organic counterpart in terms of morphology, mechanical stability, permeability, swelling–shrinking behavior, capacity, and efficiency. The results demonstrate that the S‐column is superior to its counterpart in all the terms with the exception of permeability. The above merits and zwitterionic property of the S‐column were further confirmed by separate separations of four inorganic anions and three organic cations.  相似文献
