Experimental electron‐density studies based on high‐resolution diffraction experiments allow halogen bonds between heavy halogens to be classified. The topological properties of the electron density in Cl…Cl contacts vary smoothly as a function of the interaction distance. The situation is less straightforward for halogen bonds between iodine and small electronegative nucleophiles, such as nitrogen or oxygen, where the electron density in the bond critical point does not simply increase for shorter distances. The number of successful charge–density studies involving iodine is small, but at least individual examples for three cases have been observed. (a) Very short halogen bonds between electron‐rich nucleophiles and heavy halogen atoms resemble three‐centre–four‐electron bonds, with a rather symmetric heavy halogen and without an appreciable σ hole. (b) For a narrow intermediate range of halogen bonds, the asymmetric electronic situation for the heavy halogen with a pronounced σ hole leads to rather low electron density in the (3,?1) critical point of the halogen bond; the properties of this bond critical point cannot fully describe the nature of the associated interaction. (c) For longer and presumably weaker contacts, the electron density in the halogen bond critical point is only to a minor extent reduced by the presence of the σ hole and hence may be higher than in the aforementioned case. In addition to the electron density and its derived properties, the halogen–carbon bond distance opposite to the σ hole and the Raman frequency for the associated vibration emerge as alternative criteria to gauge the halogen‐bond strength. We find exceptionally long C—I distances for tetrafluorodiiodobenzene molecules in cocrystals with short halogen bonds and a significant red shift for their Raman vibrations.  相似文献

MP2/aug‐cc‐pVDZ calculations are carried out on the geometries, vibrational frequencies, interaction energies and topological properties for the π‐type halogen‐bonded complexes between propargyl radical and dihalogen molecules ClF, BrF and BrCl. There are two kinds of geometries: complex ( a ) involves the interaction between the X (X=Cl, Br) atom and the midpoint of C(1) –C(2) bond, complex ( b ) involves the interaction between the X atom and C(3) atom. The lengths of the halogen bond, the frequencies of the halogen bond, the elongation extent of the X–Y (XY=ClF, BrF, BrCl) bond, topological parameters at the BCPs of the halogen bond and X–Y bond are all well consistent with the interaction energies. The interaction of complex ( a ) is stronger than that of complex ( b ); the interaction of propargyl···BrF is stronger than that of propargyl···ClF and propargyl···BrCl. For the complexes ( a ) and ( b ), the charge transfer is observed from propargyl radical to XY, the atomic energy, the dipolar polarization, and the volume of the halogen atom X decrease upon complex formation.  相似文献

Halogen bonding, a specific intermolecular noncovalent interaction, plays crucial roles in fields as diverse as molecular recognition, crystal engineering, and biological systems. This paper presents an ab initio investigation of a series of dimeric complexes formed between bromobenzene and several electron donors. Such small model systems are selected to mimic halogen bonding interactions found within crystal structures as well as within biological molecules. In all cases, the intermolecular distances are shown to be equal to or below sums of van der Waals radii of the atoms involved. Halogen bonding energies, calculated at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level, span over a wide range, from -1.52 to -15.53 kcal/mol. The interactions become comparable to, or even prevail over, classical hydrogen bonding. For charge-assisted halogen bonds, calculations have shown that the strength decreases in the order OH- > F- > HCO2- > Cl- > Br-, while for neutral systems, their relative strengths attenuate in the order H2CS > H2CO > NH3 > H2S > H2O. These results agree with those of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) since bond critical points (BCPs) are identified for these halogen bonds. The QTAIM analysis also suggests that strong halogen bonds are more covalent in nature, while weak ones are mostly electrostatic interactions. The electron densities at the BCPs are recommended as a good measure of the halogen bond strength. Finally, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis has been applied to gain more insights into the origin of halogen bonding interactions.  相似文献

Intramolecular H‐bonds existing for derivatives of 3‐amino‐propenethial have been studied using the B3LYP/6‐311++G** level of theory. The nature of these interactions, known as resonance assisted hydrogen bonds, has been discussed. The topological properties of the electron density distributions for N—H—S intramolecular bridges have been analyzed in terms of the Bader theory of atoms in molecules. Correlations between the H‐bond strength and topological parameters have been also studied. Furthermore, we obtained the exact value of the intramolecular hydrogen bond energies by the related rotamers method. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2009  相似文献

Single crystals of (2S,5R)‐2‐isopropyl‐5‐methyl‐7‐(5‐methylisoxazol‐3‐yl)cyclohexanespiro‐3′‐(1,2,4,5,7‐tetraoxazocane), C16H26N2O5, have been studied via X‐ray diffraction. The tetraoxazocane ring adopts a boat–chair conformation in the crystalline state, which is due to intramolecular interactions. Conformational analysis of the tetraoxazocane fragment performed at the B3LYP/6‐31G(d,2p) level of theory showed that there are three minima on the potential energy surface, one of which corresponds to the conformation realized in the solid state, but not to a global minimum. Analysis of the geometry and the topological parameters of the electron density at the (3,?1) bond critical points (BCPs), and the charge transfer in the tetraoxazocane ring indicated that there are stereoelectronic effects in the O—C—O and N—C—O fragments. There is a two‐cross hyperconjugation in the N—C—O fragment between the lone electron pair of the N atom (lpN) and the antibonding orbital of a C—O bond (σ*C—O) and vice versa between lpO and σ*C—N. The oxazole substituent has a considerable effect on the geometry and the topological parameters of the electron density at the (3,?1) BCPs of the tetraoxazocane ring. The crystal structure is stabilized via intermolecular C—H…N and C—H…O hydrogen bonds, which is unambiguously confirmed with PIXEL calculations, a quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) topological analysis of the electron density at the (3,?1) BCPs and a Hirshfeld analysis of the electrostatic potential. The molecules form zigzag chains in the crystal due to intermolecular C—H…N interactions being electrostatic in origin. The molecules are further stacked due to C—H…O hydrogen bonds. The dispersion component in the total stabilization energy of the crystal lattice is 68.09%.  相似文献

The influences of the Li???π interaction of C6H6???LiOH on the H???π interaction of C6H6???HOX (X=F, Cl, Br, I) and the X???π interaction of C6H6???XOH (X=Cl, Br, I) are investigated by means of full electronic second‐order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory calculations and “quantum theory of atoms in molecules” (QTAIM) studies. The binding energies, binding distances, infrared vibrational frequencies, and electron densities at the bond critical points (BCPs) of the hydrogen bonds and halogen bonds prove that the addition of the Li???π interaction to benzene weakens the H???π and X???π interactions. The influences of the Li???π interaction on H???π interactions are greater than those on X???π interactions; the influences of the H???π interactions on the Li???π interaction are greater than X???π interactions on Li???π interaction. The greater the influence of Li???π interaction on H/X???π interactions, the greater the influences of H/X???π interactions on Li???π interaction. QTAIM studies show that the intermolecular interactions of C6H6???HOX and C6H6???XOH are mainly of the π type. The electron densities at the BCPs of hydrogen bonds and halogen bonds decrease on going from bimolecular complexes to termolecular complexes, and the π‐electron densities at the BCPs show the same pattern. Natural bond orbital analyses show that the Li???π interaction reduces electron transfer from C6H6 to HOX and XOH.  相似文献

A series of complexes formed between halogen-containing molecules and ammonia have been investigated by means of the atoms in molecules (AIM) approach to gain a deeper insight into halogen bonding. The existence of the halogen bond critical points (XBCP) and the values of the electron density (Pb) and Laplacian of electron density (V2pb) at the XBCP reveal the closed-shell interactions in these complexes. Integrated atomic properties such as charge, energy, polarization moment, volume of the halogen bond donor atoms, and the corresponding changes (△) upon complexation have been calculated. The present calculations have demonstrated that the halogen bond represents different AIM properties as compared to the well-documented hydrogen bond. Both the electron density and the Laplacian of electron density at the XBCP have been shown to correlate well with the interaction energy, which indicates that the topological parameters at the XBCP can be treated as a good measure of the halogen bond strength In addition, an excellent linear relationship between the interatomic distance d(X…N) and the logarithm of Pb has been established.  相似文献

Methyl radical complexes H3C…HCN and H3C…HNC have been investigated at the UMP2(full)/aug‐cc‐pVTZ level to elucidate the nature of hydrogen bonds. To better understand the intermolecular H‐bond interactions, topological analysis of electron density at bond critical points (BCP) is executed using Bader's atoms‐in‐molecules (AIM) theory. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis has also been performed to study the orbital interactions and change of hybridization. Theoretical calculations show that there is no essential difference between the blue‐shift H‐bond and the conventional one. In H3C…HNC complex, rehybridization is responsible for shortening of the N? H bond. The hyperconjugative interaction between the single electron of the methyl radical and N? H antibonding orbital is up to 7.0 kcal/mol, exceeding 3.0 kcal/mol, the upper limit of hyperconjugative n(Y)→σ*(X–H) interaction to form the blue‐shifted H‐bond according to Alabugin's theory. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The halogen bond, similar to the hydrogen bond, is an important noncovalent interaction and plays important roles in diverse chemistry‐related fields. Herein, bromine‐ and iodine‐based halogen‐bonding interactions between two benzene derivatives (C6F5Br and C6F5I) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are investigated by using IR and NMR spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The results are compared with those of interactions between C6F5Cl/C6F5H and DMSO. First, the interaction energy of the hydrogen bond is stronger than those of bromine‐ and chlorine‐based halogen bonds, but weaker than iodine‐based halogen bond. Second, attractive energies depend on 1/rn, in which n is between three and four for both hydrogen and halogen bonds, whereas all repulsive energies are found to depend on 1/r8.5. Third, the directionality of halogen bonds is greater than that of the hydrogen bond. The bromine‐ and iodine‐based halogen bonds are strict in this regard and the chlorine‐based halogen bond only slightly deviates from 180°. The directional order is iodine‐based halogen bond>bromine‐based halogen bond>chlorine‐based halogen bond>hydrogen bond. Fourth, upon the formation of hydrogen and halogen bonds, charge transfers from DMSO to the hydrogen‐ and halogen‐bond donors. The CH3 group contributes positively to stabilization of the complexes.  相似文献

Bromomethane-water 1:2 complexes have been theoretically studied to reveal the role of hydrogen bond and halogen bond in the formation of different aggregations. Four stable structures exist on the potential energy surface of the CH3Br(H2O)2 complex. The bromine atom acts mainly as proton acceptor in the four studied structures. It is also capable of participating in the formation of the halogen bond. The properties and characteristics of the hydrogen bond and the halogen bond are investigated employing several different quantum chemical analysis methods. Cooperative effects for the pure hydrogen bonds or the mixed hydrogen bonds with halogen bonds and the possibility of describing cooperative effects in terms of the topological analysis of the electronic density or the charge-transfer stabilization energy are discussed in detail. An atoms-in-molecules study of the hydrogen bond or the halogen bond in the bromomethane-water 1:2 complexes suggests that the electronic density topology of the hydrogen bond or the halogen bond is insensitive to the cooperative effect. The charge-transfer stabilization energy is proportional to the cooperative effect, which indicates the donor-acceptor electron density transfer to be mainly responsible for the trimer nonadditive effect.  相似文献

The characteristics and structures of single-electron halogen bond complexes [H3C?Br-Y (Y = H, CCH, CN, NC, C2H3)] have been investigated by theoretical calculation methods. The geometries were optimized and frequencies calculated at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level. The interaction energies were corrected for basis set superposition error (BSSE) and the wavefunctions obtained by the natural bond orbital (NBO) and atom in molecule (AIM) analyses at the MP2/6-311++G** level. For each H3C?Br-Y complex, a single-electron Br bond is formed between the unpaired electron of the CH3 (electron donor) radical and the Br atom of Br-Y (electron acceptor); this kind of single-electron bromine bond also possesses the character of a “three-electron bond”. Due to the formation of the single-electron Br bond, the C-H bonds of the CH3 radical bend away from the Br-Y moiety and the Br-Y bond elongates, giving red-shifted single-electron Br bond complexes. The effects of substituents, hybridization of the carbon atom, and solvent on the properties of the complexes have been investigated. The strengths of single-electron hydrogen bonds, single-electron halogen bonds and single-electron lithium bonds have been compared. In addition, the single-electron halogen bond system is discussed in the light of the first three criteria for hydrogen bonding proposed by Popelier.  相似文献

Halogen-hydride interactions between Z-X (Z = CN, NC and X = F, Cl, Br) as halogen donor and H-Mg-Y (Y = H, F, Cl, Br, CH(3)) as electron donor have been investigated through the use of Becke three-parameter hybrid exchange with Lee-Yang-Parr correlation (B3LYP), second-order M?ller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), and coupled-cluster single and double excitation (with triple excitations) [CCSD(T)] approaches. Geometry changes during the halogen-hydride interaction are accompanied by a mutual polarization of both partners with some charge transfer occurring from the electron donor subunit. Interaction energies computed at MP2 level vary from -1.23 to -2.99 kJ/mol for Z-F···H-Mg-Y complexes, indicating that the fluorine interactions are relatively very weak but not negligible. Instead, for chlorine- and bromine-containing complexes the interaction energies span from -5.78 to a maximum of -26.42 kJ/mol, which intimate that the interactions are comparable to conventional hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the calculated interaction energy was found to increase in magnitude with increasing positive electrostatic potential on the extension of Z-X bond. Analysis of geometric, vibrational frequency shift and the interaction energies indicates that, depending on the halogen, CN-X···H interactions are about 1.3-2.0 times stronger than NC-X···H interactions in which the halogen bonds to carbon. We also identified a clear dependence of the halogen-hydride bond strength on the electron-donating or -withdrawing effect of the substituent in the H-Mg-Y subunits. Furthermore, the electronic and structural properties of the resulting complexes have been unveiled by means of the atoms in molecules (AIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses. Finally, several correlative relationships between interaction energies and various properties such as binding distance, frequency shift, molecular electrostatic potential, and intermolecular density at bond critical point have been checked for all studied systems.  相似文献

When R is sufficiently electron withdrawing, the fluorine in the R?F molecules could interact with electron donors (e.g., ammonia) and form a noncovalent bond (F ??? N). Although these interactions are usually categorized as halogen bonding, our studies show that there are fundamental differences between these interactions and halogen bonds. Although the anisotropic distribution of electronic charge around a halogen is responsible for halogen bond formations, the electronic charge around the fluorine in these molecules is spherical. According to source function analysis, F is the sink of electron density at the F ??? N BCP, whereas other halogens are the source. In contrast to halogen bonds, the F ??? N interactions cannot be regarded as lump–hole interactions; there is no hole in the valence shell charge concentration (VSCC) of fluorine. Although the quadruple moment of Cl and Br is mainly responsible for the existence of σ‐holes, it is negligibly small in the fluorine. Here, the atomic dipole moment of F plays a stabilizing role in the formation of F ??? N bonds. Interacting quantum atoms (IQA) analysis indicates that the interaction between halogen and nitrogen in the halogen bonds is attractive, whereas it is repulsive in the F ??? N interactions. Virial‐based atomic energies show that the fluorine, in contrast to Cl and Br, stabilize upon complex formation. According to these differences, it seems that the F ??? N interactions should be referred to as “fluorine bond” instead of halogen bond.  相似文献

Noncovalent halogen/π interactions of FCl with substituted benzenes have been investigated using ab initio calculations. It was shown that the predicted maximum interaction energy gap between the substituted and unsubstituted systems amounts to 1.14 kcal/mol, and therefore substituents on benzene have a pronounced effect on the strength of halogen/π interactions. While the presence of electron‐donating groups (NH2, CH3, and OH) on benzene enhances the interaction energy appreciably, an opposite effect is observed for electron‐accepting groups (NO2, CN, Br, Cl, and F). The large gain of the attraction by electron correlation illustrates that the stabilities of the systems considered arise primarily from the dispersion interaction. Beside the dispersion interaction, the charge‐transfer interaction also plays an important role in halogen/π interactions, as a charge density analysis suggested. To provide more insight into the nature of halogen/π interactions, topological analysis of the electron density distribution and properties of bond critical points were determined in terms of the atoms in molecules (AIM) theory. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The experimental electron density of the donor-acceptor complex of (E)-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (F(4)DIB) at 90 K has been determined with the aspherical atom formalism and analyzed by means of the topological theory of molecular structure. The bpe and F(4)DIB molecules are connected by intermolecular I.N bonds into infinite 1D chains. F.H bonds link these chains together to form the crystal assembly. The topological analysis reveals that the Cbond;I bond is of the "closed shell" type. Its bond-critical properties run parallel to those found in metal-metal and metal-ligand bonds of organometallic compounds. The integrated net charges show that the I.N halogen bond has an essentially electrostatic nature. F.F, F.C, and C.C intermolecular interactions, for which a bond path was found, contribute to reinforce the crystal structure.  相似文献

The nature of the MoH···I bond in Cp2Mo(L)H···I‐C≡C‐R (L= H, CN, PPh2, C(CH3)3; R=NO2, Cl, Br, H, OH, CH3, NH2) was investigated using electrostatic potential analysis, topological analysis of the electron density, energy decomposition analysis and natural bond orbital analysis. The calculated results show that MoH···I interactions in the title complexes belong to halogen‐hydride bond, which is similar to halogen bonds, not hydrogen bonds. Different to the classical halogen bonds, the directionality of MoH···I bond is low; Although electrostatic interaction is dorminant, the orbital interactions also play important roles in this kind of halogen bond, and steric interactions are weak; the strength of H···I bond can tuned by the most positive electrostatic potential of the I atom. As the electron‐withdrawing ability of the R substituent in the alkyne increases, the electrostatic potential maximum of the I atom increases, which enhances the strength of the H···I halogen bond, as well as the electron transfer.  相似文献

Series of typical π‐type and pseudo‐π‐type halogen‐bonded complexes B ··· ClY and B ··· BrY and hydrogen‐bonded complex B ··· HY (B = C2H4, C2H2, and C3H6; Y = F, Cl, and Br) have been investigated using the MP2/aug‐cc‐pVDZ method. A striking parallelism was found in the geometries, vibrational frequencies, binding energies, and topological properties between B ··· XY and B ··· HY (X = Cl and Br). It has been found that the lengths of the weak bond d(X ··· π)/d(H ··· π), the frequencies of the weak bond ν(X ··· π)/ν(H ··· π), the frequency shifts Δν(X? Y)/Δν(H? Y), the electron densities at the bond critical point of the weak bonds ρc(X ··· π)/ρc(H ··· π), and the electron density changes Δρc(X? Y)/Δρc(H? Y) could be used as measures of the strengths of typical π‐type and pseudo‐π‐type halogen/hydrogen bonds. The typical π‐type and pseudo‐π‐type halogen bond and hydrogen bond are noncovalent interactions. For the same Y, the halogen bond strengths are in the order B ··· ClY < B ··· BrY. For the same X, the halogen bond strength decreases according to the sequence F > Cl > Br that is in agreement with the hydrogen bond strengths B ··· HF > B ··· HCl > B ··· HBr. All of these typical π‐type and pseudo‐π‐type hydrogen‐bonded and halogen‐bonded complexes have the “conflict‐type” structure. Contour maps of the Laplacian of π electron density indicate that the formation of B ··· XY halogen‐bonded complex and B ··· HY hydrogen‐bonded complex is very similar. Charge transfer is observed from B to XY/HY and both the dipolar polarization and the volume of the halogen atom or hydrogen atom decrease on B ··· XY/B ··· HY complex formation. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
