Abstract

Electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films which have reversed morphology are investigated. Highly transparent memory states, for which transmittances exceed more than 80 per cent, are observed in these PDLC films. The saturation voltage V 90 can be decreased by a PTF (a phase transition with a field) operation and becomes 10 times lower than that without PTF operation. A contrast ratio of more than 600 is obtained in the memory state of a thick PDLC film.  相似文献

Two hyperbranched prepolymers were synthesized via the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer copolymerization of butyl acrylate or butyl methacrylate with divinyl benzene, respectively. These prepolymers were used in the photopolymerization‐induced phase separation process of preparing polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films with no risk of gelation. The morphologies of PDLC samples were investigated. Of particular interest was that the driving voltage (V90) of PDLC with high glass transition temperature (Tg) matrix was as low as 5 V, whereas the V90 of PDLC with low Tg matrix was still high. An explanation for this phenomenon is the hypothesis that different interaction modes function at the interface of liquid crystal and polymer. Meanwhile, the hysteresis of the two systems was minor, which correlated with the hyperbranched structure of polymer. The on‐state transmittance (TON) of PDLC films enhanced because of the well matching between the refractive index of polymer and that of liquid crystal. Nucleophile-initiated thiol-ene click reaction was employed to prepare polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films initiated by 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP). The PDLC films were prepared in different temperature. It is found that the reaction temperature has a big influence on the electro-optical properties of PDLC films and 60°C is the optimal temperature to fabricate PDLC film which has high ON state transmittance (Ton) and low OFF state transmittance (Toff). UV-Visible spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy and polarised optical microscope were employed to explore the obtained PDLC films. Nucleophile-initiated thiol-ene click reaction, without UV-light, probably provides a new pathway to prepare PDLC films.  相似文献

The conductance of polymer matrix is an important factor for the property of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC). The nanographites are dispersed into the polymer matrix for optimising the dielectric conductive property. The synthesised nanoparticles SiO2 was used as photonic crystal (PC) to work as a template for fabricating PDLC films. A mixture of pre-polymer and liquid crystals (LCs) was infiltrated into the void of the PC and polymerised under ultraviolet light. The void of the PC made uniform the dispersion of the liquid crystals in the films. The optical property of the PDLC films was optimised by doped nanographites and negative charge SiO2 template. The effect of negative charge SiO2 and nanographites on the threshold voltage and driving voltage was researched. The morphology of the PDLC films was studied by the FTIR image. The dispersed LCs droplets were uniformly affected by the addition of the nanographites. The LCs droplets dispersed in the polymer were located in the void of the SiO2 photonic crystal.  相似文献

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films can be switched electrically from a light-scattering off-state to a highly transparent on-state. Thin films were prepared via a polymerization-induced phase separation process, using electron beam radiation. The liquid crystal (LC)/polymer materials were obtained from blends of an eutectic nematie mixture E7 and a polyester acrylate-based polymer precursor. The optical and electro-optical properties of the PDLC films obtained depend strongly on the LC concentration. The LC solubility limit in the polymer matrix and the fractional amount of LC contained in the droplets were determined by means of calorimetrie measurements.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The relationship between linear chain (ethylene oxide units) length of polymerisable monomers with morphology, electro-optical properties and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of the corresponding polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films was investigated. The preferred liquid crystal molecule alignment and permanent memory effect of PDLC were greatly influenced by the length of the molecular chain of prepolymers to be incorporated as a polymer matrix. By increasing the number of ethylene oxide in prepolymer chain and maintaining the number of functionalities (polymerisable groups in each monomer molecule), the permanent memory effect of PDLC increased, as proved by solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy.  相似文献

Polymerization induced phase separation initiated by electron beam radiation has been used as a powerful method to obtain well defined PDLC films. Mixtures of different amounts of an aromatic polyester acrylate, an oligoether triacrylate and nematic liquid crystal material E7 were exposed to the electron beam radiation. The electro-optical properties strongly depend on the liquid crystal concentration and on the amount of the oligoether triacrylate in the prepolymer mixture, and are highly reproducible. An unusual enhancement effect of the electro-optical sensitivity was found for samples containing 28 weight per cent and 34 weight per cent of the oligoether triacrylate.  相似文献

In this letter, iniferter polymerization was employed to prepare polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. Polystyrene (PS) was prepared as a macro-iniferter (MI). With the addition of MI in PDLC films, poly(methyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene was prepared in situ and used as polymer matrix in photopolymerization induced phase separation (PIPS). A reduction in driving voltages and an improvement in the ON state transmittance were observed for the sample prepared with a small amount of MI; while a poor electro-optical performance was obtained for that without any MI. Moreover, molecular weight and refractive index of the polymer matrix could be easily adjusted by the concentration of MI, and the matrix seems to be a prospective material for the PDLC devices.  相似文献

Partial off-state alignment of the liquid crystal in polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) droplets was obtained by the application of electric or magnetic fields during their formation. Photopolymerization was used to induce phase separation of the liquid droplets from monomer/liquid crystal solutions. Substantial director directionality was retained in these PDLC films after removal of the fields used during their formation. This alignment affected both the off-state and the on-state electro-optic properties of the films. Transverse electrical fields (5 to 60 V across a 15 μm thickness) applied during PDLC formation from a solution of E7 (BDH Ltd) in a monomer resulted in PDLC films with progressively lower off-state scattering and lower threshold voltage. Strong longitudinal magnetic fields (9 to 14 T) applied during PDLC formation with these materials resulted in strong polarization effects in the light scattering off-state. In the infrared region, where there is less light scattering than in the visible region, the longitudinally aligned films shows tunable birefringent electro-optic effects while retaining the fast time response characteristics of PDLC films with small droplet sizes.  相似文献

The flexible polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film with threshold voltage V 10 and saturation driving voltage V 90 as low as 0.34 V/μm and 0.77 V/μm, respectively, has been prepared successfully by polymerization induced phase separation (PIPS). The surface rubbing effect on morphologies of liquid crystals (LC) droplets and electro-optic properties of PDLC films has been studied experimentally and theoretically. We use a CVC (Color Video Camera) and a SEM (Scan Electron Microscope) to detect and characterize morphologies of LC droplets in the net of polymer. The result reveals that almost all the smaller LC droplets exhibit in the rubbing direction uniformly, and the texture of PDLC is similar to that of H-PDLC. Meanwhile, compared with the sample of the non-rubbing disposal, the response time declines evidently by 11.2 ms (i.e., the rising time τrise) and 27.2 ms (i.e., the decaying time τdown), and the contrast ratio is improved from 18.5 to 35.9. Such a result can be attributed to the surface rubbing effect.  相似文献

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) are composite materials consisting of micron-sized droplets of liquid crystal dispersed in a polymer matrix. The easiest method to obtain a PDLC film is the polymerisation-induced phase separation process (PIPS). The liquid crystal is mixed with a monomer of low molecular weight and polymerisation is induced by heat or UV light. The increasing molecular weight of the polymer causes the phase separation of liquid crystal from the polymer matrix as micron-sized droplets. In this work, we have studied the structural changes induced in the polymer matrix of a PDLC after the PIPS process by deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance. Two different selectively deuterated monomers have been synthesized and investigated: isobutyl methacrylate (IBMA-d2) and methyl methacrylate (MMA-d3). The main results were the disappearance of the characteristic two-site hop in poly-IBMA, due to liquid crystal molecules, and the lack of unreacted MMA molecules in the liquid crystal droplets. In this last case, we found that it is possible to confine temporarily the unreacted MMA molecules within liquid crystal droplets.Abbreviations MMA Methyl methacrylate - IBMA Isobutyl methacrylate - PDLC Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal - PIPS Polymerisation-induced phase separation - 2H-NMR Deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance*Dedicated to Professor V. Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared from thermal polymerisation-induced phase separation in heat-curable monomers/nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixtures. For PDLCs with a certain amount of LCs, the microstructure and the refractive index of polymer networks could be influenced by the relative content of epoxy monomers, owing to their different chemical structures. The effect of these factors on the electro-optic properties of films was also investigated.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Permanent memory effect (PME) in polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) allows a greater applicability range than traditional PDLCs. One of the most interesting application could be the possible storing of optical information, the so-called Digital Optical Memory (DOM) devices. To test this application it would be required a display structure having an array of pixels addresses. Each pixel was filled with PDLC film with PME and electric field can be independently applied to different PDLC elements to define on/off pixel states (transparent or scattering states).PDLC films were obtained from a mixture of E7 nematic liquid crystal and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate with 875 g mol-1oligomer as precursor of the polymeric matrix. The effect of the curing temperature and the UV light intensity as well time exposure during the polymerisations on the electro-optical performance of PDLC films were investigated. In this way, a high transparency state (TOFF=55%) for a long period of time at room temperature even after the applied voltage has been switched off were obtained, started from an opaque state (T0=0%) and after reaching a transparent state (TMAX=75%), which causes 73% PME. The application to an 8x8 passive matrix using PDLC with PME is also demonstrated as proof-of-principle.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films based on epoxy-mercaptan system were prepared by thermal-initiated polymerization. The effects of the liquid crystal (LC) content, the proportion and the functionality of epoxy monomers on the polymer structures and electro-optical properties of the as-made PDLC films were investigated systematically. It was found that the morphologies of the polymer matrix can be altered from polymer meshes to polymer balls by increasing the LC content as well as the functionality of epoxy monomers. Accordingly, the electro-optical properties could be regulated by the morphologies of polymer networks. Especially, the as-made PDLC films with homogeneous porous structures exhibited the optimal electro-optical properties. Consequently, this work offers a meaningful approach to control the microstructures and optimize the electro-optical properties of PDLC films, which indeed can form a wonderful footstone for the wide application of PDLC.  相似文献

Abstract

Recently, we have observed dramatic changes in the electro-optic properties of PDLC films composed of droplets of the liquid crystal E7 in a matrix of polyvinylformal (PVFM) in the vicinity of the glass transition temperature of the matrix. One plausible explanation for these changes is a decrease in the surface anchoring strength on passing through the glass transition. For this reason, we undertook a study of the surface anchoring strength between E7 and a thin film of PVFM using the technique of Yokoyama and van Sprang. To mimic the properties of the matrix more closely, we dissolved 20 per cent E7 liquid crystal into the PVFM film. The surface anchoring for this film was compared with that of a pure PVFM film. From these data, we observed no obvious changes in the surface anchoring on passing through the glass transition of the matrix. However, the incorporation of liquid crystal into the matrix did cause a decrease in the surface anchoring strength. We discuss the impact of these results on the interpretation of the PDLC electro-optic properties.  相似文献

The electro-optical properties and memory effects are important characters of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) devices. Molecular weight of polymer matrix influences the morphology of liquid crystal droplets in PDLC film and the performance of PDLC devices. In this letter, PDLC films were doped with a small amount of chain transfer agent (CTA), in order to control the molecular weight of polymer matrix. It is observed that the addition of CTA induces a reduction of threshold voltage. In addition, the effect of molecular weight on memory effects of PDLC devices was also discussed. It is found that the entanglement between polymer and liquid crystal molecule increased with the molecular weight, which reduces the memory effect.  相似文献
