Graphene is a two-dimensional sp2 hybridized carbon material that has attracted tremendous attention for its stimuli-responsive applications, owing to its high surface area and excellent electrical, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The physicochemical properties of graphene can be tuned by surface functionalization. The biomedical field pays special attention to stimuli-responsive materials due to their responsive abilities under different conditions. Stimuli-responsive materials exhibit great potential in changing their behavior upon exposure to external or internal factors, such as pH, light, electric field, magnetic field, and temperature. Graphene-based materials, particularly graphene oxide (GO), have been widely used in stimuli-responsive applications due to their superior biocompatibility compared to other forms of graphene. GO has been commonly utilized in tissue engineering, bioimaging, biosensing, cancer therapy, and drug delivery. GO-based stimuli-responsive platforms for wound healing applications have not yet been fully explored. This review describes the effects of different stimuli-responsive factors, such as pH, light, temperature, and magnetic and electric fields on GO-based materials and their applications. The wound healing applications of GO-based materials is extensively discussed with cancer therapy and drug delivery.  相似文献

Ground‐breaking advances in nanomedicine (defined as the application of nanotechnology in medicine) have proposed novel therapeutics and diagnostics, which can potentially revolutionize current medical practice. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) with a distinctive nanocage structure consisting of an inner inorganic framework of silicon and oxygen atoms, and an outer shell of organic functional groups is one of the most promising nanomaterials for medical applications. Enhanced biocompatibility and physicochemical (material bulk and surface) properties have resulted in the development of a wide range of nanocomposite POSS copolymers for biomedical applications, such as the development of biomedical devices, tissue engineering scaffolds, drug delivery systems, dental applications, and biological sensors. The application of POSS nanocomposites in combination with other nanostructures has also been investigated including silver nanoparticles and quantum dot nanocrystals. Chemical functionalization confers antimicrobial efficacy to POSS, and the use of polymer nanocomposites provides a biocompatible surface coating for quantum dot nanocrystals to enhance the efficacy of the materials for different biomedical and biotechnological applications. Interestingly, a family of POSS‐containing nanocomposite materials can be engineered either as completely non‐biodegradable materials or as biodegradable materials with tuneable degradation rates required for tissue engineering applications. These highly versatile POSS derivatives have created new horizons for the field of biomaterials research and beyond. Currently, the application of POSS‐containing polymers in various fields of nanomedicine is under intensive investigation with expectedly encouraging outcomes.

Nanozymes, nanomaterials with enzyme-mimicking activity, have attracted tremendous interest in recent years owing to their ability to replace natural enzymes in various biomedical applications, such as biosensing, therapeutics, drug delivery, and bioimaging. In particular, the nanozymes capable of regulating the cellular redox status by mimicking the antioxidant enzymes in mammalian cells are of great therapeutic significance in oxidative-stress-mediated disorders. As the distinction of physiological oxidative stress (oxidative eustress) and pathological oxidative stress (oxidative distress) occurs at a fine borderline, it is a great challenge to design nanozymes that can differentially sense the two extremes in cells, tissues and organs and mediate appropriate redox chemical reactions. In this Review, we summarize the advances in the development of redox-active nanozymes and their biomedical applications. We primarily highlight the therapeutic significance of the antioxidant and prooxidant nanozymes in various disease model systems, such as cancer, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular diseases. The future perspectives of this emerging area of research and the challenges associated with the biomedical applications of nanozymes are described.  相似文献

As an emerging type of important macrocycles for supramolecular chemistry, pillararenes and their derivatives have been widely studied and applied in numerous fields, which intensively promotes the development of chemistry, materials science and biology.Pillararene-based theranostic systems are of special interest in the biological and medical areas as they have shown very promising results. Owing to easy preparation, reliable guest affinity, good biocompatibility and stability, pillararenes are frequently used to construct functional biomaterials. On one hand, pillararenes can either be used individually or form diversiform self-assemblies such as micelles, nanoparticles and vesicles to increase water solubility and biocompatibility of drugs. On the other hand, it is promising to modify solid materials like framework materials, silica nanoparticles and graphene oxides with pillararene derivatives to enhance their functions and controllability. In this review, we summarize recent endeavors of pillararene-based supramolecular systems with theranostics and other biological applications comprising drug delivery/chemotherapy, photodynamic/photothermal therapy, antimicrobials, bioimaging, etc. By introducing several typical examples, the design principles, preparation strategies, identifications and bio-applications of these pillararene-based supramolecular systems are described. Future challenges and directions of this field are also outlined.  相似文献

Modalities for photo‐triggered anticancer therapy are usually limited by their low penetrative depth. Sonotheranostics especially sonodynamic therapy (SDT), which is different from photodynamic therapy (PDT) by the use of highly penetrating acoustic waves to activate a class of sound‐responsive materials called sonosensitizers, has gained significant interest in recent years. The effect of SDT is closely related to the structural and physicochemical properties of the sonosensitizers, which has led to the development of new sound‐activated materials as sonosensitizers for various biomedical applications. This Review provides a summary and discussion of the types of novel sonosensitizers developed in the last few years and outlines their specific designs and the potential challenges. The applications of sonosensitizers with various functions such as for imaging and drug delivery as well as in combination with other treatment modalities would provide new strategies for disease therapy.  相似文献

After discovering a new class of two-dimensional (2D) material, i.e., MXene, a further new scope, came into existence for researchers. Due to their remarkable physical, chemical, and biological properties, MXenes find their role in almost every research discipline. They have been used in biosensors, bioimaging, tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, and other areas. The MXenes can be functionalized with a wide range of atoms/molecules, making them diverse materials. Therefore, the potential of using MXenes in nanofibers can be much more than expected. In this review, we will understand the structure, synthesis, and general properties of MXenes. We will explain using MXenes while encasing them into nanofibers, providing their specific properties. For instance, MXenes-incorporated nanofibers are used in biomedical applications, including soft and hard-tissue engineering and delivery of antimicrobials. Furthermore, MXenes, when incorporated into nanofibers, are used in promoting cellular differentiation, wound healing, and neural tissue restoration, which are briefly discussed in this communication.  相似文献

Microneedles (MNs) are a new type of drug delivery method that can be regarded as an alternative to traditional transdermal drug delivery systems. Recently, MNs have attracted widespread attention for their advantages of effectiveness, safety, and painlessness. However, the functionality of traditional MNs is too monotonous and limits their application. To improve the efficiency of disease treatment and diagnosis by combining the advantages of MNs, the concept of intelligent stimulus-responsive MNs is proposed. Intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs can exhibit unique biomedical functions according to the internal and external environment changes. This review discusses the classification and principles of intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs, such as magnet, temperature, light, electricity, reactive oxygen species, pH, glucose, and protein. This review also highlights examples of intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs for biomedical applications, such as on-demand drug delivery, tissue repair, bioimaging, detection and monitoring, and photothermal therapy. These intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs offer the advantages of high biocompatibility, targeted therapy, selective detection, and precision treatment. Finally, the prospects and challenges for the application of intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs are discussed.  相似文献
