This note revisits the literature evaluating the thermodynamic parameters of adsorption equilibrium uptakes of heavy metals and dyes from water and wastewater streams using low-cost adsorbents derived from agricultural waste, industrial wastes, inorganic particulates, or some natural products. We highlighted the possible flaws in some adsorption studies when their thermodynamic parameters were assessed, since compensation effects during enthalpy and entropy evaluation were possibly overlooked.  相似文献

Wastewaters from numerous industrial and laboratory operations can contain toxic or undesirable components such as metal ions, which must be removed before discharge to surface waters. Adsorption processes that have high removal efficiencies are attractive methods for removing such contaminants. For economic operations, it is desirable to have an adsorbent that is selective for the metal contaminant of interest, has high capacity for the contaminant, has rapid adsorption kinetics, can be economically produced, and can be regenerated to a concentrated waste product or decomposed to a low-volume waste. Selected microorganisms are potentially useful adsorbents for these applications because they can be inexpensive, have high selectivities, and have high capacities for adsorption of many heavy metals, which are often problems in a variety of industries.  相似文献

Waste carbon slurries (generated in fertilizer plants) and blast furnace slag (generated in steel plants) have been converted into low-cost potential adsorbents. The adsorbents have been characterized and tried for the removal of the dye basic red from wastewater. Studies were performed at different pH to find the pH at which maximum adsorption occurs. Equilibrium isotherms were determined to assess the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbents. Adsorption capacities are compared for activated carbon developed from fertilizer waste and activated slag developed from blast furnace waste. The adsorption data are correlated with Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms in each system. The kinetics of adsorption depends on the adsorbate concentration and the physical and chemical characteristics of the adsorbent. Studies were conducted to delineate the effect of pH, temperature, initial absorbate concentration, particle size of the adsorbent, and solid-to-liquid ratio. The adsorption of basic red was found to be endothermic and first-order in nature.  相似文献

Adsorption of phenolic compounds on low-cost adsorbents: A review   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Adsorption techniques are widely used to remove certain classes of pollutants from wastewater. Phenolic compounds represent one of the problematic groups. Although commercial activated carbon is a preferred adsorbent for phenol removal, its widespread use is restricted due to the high cost. As such, alternative non-conventional adsorbents have been investigated. The natural materials, waste materials from industry and agriculture and bioadsorbents can be employed as inexpensive adsorbents. The review (i) presents a critical analysis of these materials; (ii) describes their characteristics, advantages and limitations; and (iii) discusses the various mechanisms involved. There are several issues and drawbacks concerned on the adsorption of phenolic compounds that have been discussed in this review article. It is evident from the review that low-cost adsorbents have demonstrated high removal capabilities for certain phenolic compounds. In particular, industrial waste might be a promising adsorbent for environmental and purification purposes.  相似文献

Agricultural wastes have great potential for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. The contamination of water by toxic heavy metals is a worldwide environmental problem. Unlike organic pollutants, the majority of which are susceptible to biological degradation, heavy metals do not degrade into harmless end products. Discharges containing cadmium, in particular, are strictly controlled because of the highly toxic nature of this element and its tendency to accumulate in the tissues of living organisms. This work aims to develop inexpensive, highly available, effective metal ion adsorbents from natural wastes as alternatives to existing commercial adsorbents. In particular, Tamrix articulata wastes were modified chemically by esterification with maleic acid to yield a carboxyl-rich adsorbent. The adsorption behavior of treated Tamrix articulata wastes toward cadmium ions in aqueous solutions in a batch system has been studied as a function of equilibration time, adsorbent dose, temperature and pH. Results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was 195.5 mg/g in a pH 4 solution at 30 °C with a contact time of 120 min, an initial concentration of 400 mg/L and an adsorbent dose of 0.3 g/L. The kinetic data were analyzed using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. It was shown that the adsorption of cadmium could be described by a pseudo-second-order equation. The experimental data were also analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich models of adsorption. Thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° have been evaluated and it has been found that the sorption process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. From all of our data, we conclude that the treated Tamrix articulata wastes investigated in this study showed good potential for cadmium removal from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Chemical functionalization of olive stone wastes with succinate linkers can potentially improve the performance of wastewater treatment technologies via enhanced adsorption and high affinity of the covalently attached succinate groups for heavy metals. In this study, a novel reusable adsorbent material based on agricultural waste has been synthesized by esterifying the lignocellulosic matrix of olive stones with succinic anhydride in toluene under basic conditions. Characterization of the as-prepared material by FTIR and solid-state MAS 13C NMR spectroscopies and TGA confirmed that the heterogeneous esterification has proceeded very efficiently to yield the succinylated-olive stone (S–OS). Subsequent alkaline treatment of S–OS with saturated NaHCO3 aqueous solution led to the resulting sodic material (NaS–OS), which was subjected to batch experiments in order to evaluate its cadmium-removing efficiency from aqueous solutions at realistic concentrations of cadmium found in industrial effluents. The results obtained from the sorption characteristics have revealed that NaS–OS material is highly effective in removing cadmium from aqueous solutions, with a maximum uptake capacity of 200 mg g−1 (1.78 mmol g−1). The Langmuir isotherm model was found to fit adequately the equilibrium isotherm data. Cadmium adsorption occurs rapidly and the adsorption mechanism is a chemical sorption via ionic exchange between the adsorbate and adsorbent. Thermodynamic parameters were also evaluated from the effect of temperature studies. Regenerability of NaS–OS material was ascertained by quantitative desorption of cadmium with 1 M aqueous NaCl and the reusability of the matrix after five repeated cycles led to nearly no attenuation in its performance (less than 2% in the sorption capacity), indicating that repeated use of NaS–OS is quite feasible. Compared to other low-cost adsorbents utilized for the removal of Cd(II) from water/wastewater, NaS–OS shows higher sorption capacity. These results have important implications for the design of low-cost adsorbents based on agricultural wastes.  相似文献

In contemporary times, water resources have become increasingly scarce and suffer from anthropogenic pollution sources with an organic and inorganic origin that are products of industrial, agricultural, and everyday waste. Contamination with heavy metals and dyes in wastewater is considered a risk for water sources that can leak into underground and surface sources, leading to increased biological and chemical contamination. The pollutant removal process is performed by adsorption treatment methods, which is the most common method, and it is considered an effective method with a high and economical removal rate.In this review, we discuss the use of biobased hydrogel adsorbents in the removal of organic dyes and metal ions from water. The literature indicates that hydrogels exhibit rapid absorption kinetics and a dye removal absorption capacity that can reach more than 100 mg/g and sometimes more than 2000 mg/g, with a metal adsorption capacity ranging from 38 mg/g to more than 440 mg/g. These results are discussed and compared by taking into account hydrogel materials that contain biopolymers such as alginate, chitosan or both. In general, absorption depends mainly on biobased materials, which have a natural origin and can be utilized to synthesize hydrogels to remove pollutants, dyes and heavy metals. Chitosan and alginate are prominent materials for this use and they can be incorporated with other components to obtain hydrogels or nanocomposite materials with different efficacies to remove dyes and metal ions.  相似文献

In this study, Si-doped ferrihydrite (Si-Fh) was successfully synthesized by a simple coprecipitation method for removal of heavy metals in water. Subsequently, the physicochemical properties of Si-Fh before and after adsorption were further studied using several techniques. The Si-Fh exhibited good adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions such as Pb(II) and Cd(II). The maximum adsorption capacities of lead and cadmium are respectively 105.807, 37.986 mg/g. The distribution coefficients of the materials for Pb(II) and Cd(II) also showed a great affinity (under optimal conditions). Moreover, it was found that the adsorption fit well with the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model which means this was a chemical adsorption process. It can be conducted from both characterization and model results that adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) was mainly through the complexation interaction of abundance oxygen functional groups on the surface of Si-Fh. Overall, the Si-Fh adsorbents with many superiorities have potential for future applications in the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater.  相似文献

The feasibility of using two important and common clay minerals, kaolinite and montmorillonite, as adsorbents for removal of toxic heavy metals has been reviewed. A good number of works have been reported where the modifications of these natural clays were done to carry the adsorption of metals from aqueous solutions. The modification was predominantly done by pillaring with various polyoxy cations of Zr4+, Al3+, Si4+, Ti4+, Fe3+, Cr3+or Ga3+, etc. Preparation of pillared clays with quaternary ammonium cations, namely, tetramethylammonium-, tetramethylphosphonium- and trimethyl-phenylammonium-, N'-didodecyl-N, N'-tetramethylethanediammonium, etc, are also common. Moreover, the acid treatment of clays often boosted their adsorption capacities. The adsorption of toxic metals, viz., As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Ni, Zn, etc., have been studied predominantly. Montmorillonite and its modified forms have much higher metal adsorption capacity compared to that of kaolinite as well as modified-kaolinite.  相似文献

Activated carbon from coconut shells (ACCS) was synthesised and used for the removal of metal ions (manganese, iron, nickel and copper) from aqueous solutions. Two different adsorption models were used for analysing the data. Adsorption capacities were determined: copper ions exhibited the greatest adsorption on activated carbon obtained from coconut shells because of their size and pH conditions. Adsorption capacity varied as a function of the pH. Adsorption isotherms from aqueous solutions of heavy metals on ACCS were determined and were found to be consistent with Langmuir’s adsorption model. Adsorbent quantity and immersion enthalpy were studied. The results were compared with other adsorbents used in a prior study.  相似文献

Innovative processes for treating industrial wastewater containing heavy metals often involve technologies for reduction of toxicity in order to meet technology-based treatment standards. This article reviews the recent developments and technical applicability of various treatments for the removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater. A particular focus is given to innovative physico-chemical removal processes such as; adsorption on new adsorbents, membrane filtration, electrodialysis, and photocatalysis. Their advantages and limitations in application are evaluated. The main operating conditions such as pH and treatment performance are presented. Published studies of 94 cited references (1999–2008) are reviewed. It is evident from survey that new adsorbents and membrane filtration are the most frequently studied and widely applied for the treatment of metal-contaminated wastewater. However, in the near future, the most promising methods to treat such complex systems will be the photocatalytic ones which consume cheap photons from the UV-near visible region. They induce both degradation of organic pollutants and recovery of metals in one-pot systems. On the other hand, from the conventional processes, lime precipitation has been found as one of the most effective means to treat inorganic effluent with a metal concentration of >1000 mg/L. It is important to note that the overall treatment cost of metal-contaminated water varies, depending on the process employed and the local conditions. In general, the technical applicability, plant simplicity and cost-effectiveness are the key factors in selecting the most suitable treatment for inorganic effluent  相似文献

Pharmaceuticals are a unique class of emerging contaminants owing to their intrinsic ability to induce physiological effects on man and animals at low concentrations. Pharmaceuticals are released into the environment via diverse routes; human and animal wastes are the major sources. The persistence and mode of action of pharmaceuticals in the environment make them a major concern. Among methods available for wastewater treatment, the adsorption technique is found to be effective and easy to operate. The expensive nature of commercial activated carbons, however, created a limitation to the adsorption technique; hence the exploration for low-cost and sustainable adsorbents for the removal of different categories of water contaminants. Agricultural wastes offer such advantages as low-cost, abundance and eco-friendly materials in adsorbent preparation. Herein presented are the category and classes of pharmaceuticals cum the risks associated with pharmaceuticals released into the environment. The chemistry of activated carbon/agro wastes viz-a-viz suitability and potency in adsorption of different pharmaceutical waste removal were reviewed; the benefits associated with agricultural wastes usage in pharmaceutical removal have also been presented. Various challenges, gaps cum research prospects in the current field of discussion are herein presented. This work will serve as a tool for public education and enlightenment, help environmentalists make plans for envisaged threats and serve as a guide for policy makers.  相似文献

Textile effluents are major industrial polluters because of high color content, about 15% unfixed dyes and salts. The present paper is aimed to investigate and develop cheap adsorption methods for color removal from wastewater using waste materials activated carbon and activated rice husk-as adsorbents. The method was employed for the removal of Safranin-T and the influence of various factors such as adsorbent dose, adsorbate concentration, particle size, temperature, contact time, and pH was studied. The adsorption of the dye over both the adsorbents was found to follow Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. Based on these models, different useful thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated for both the adsorption processes. The adsorption of Safranin-T over activated carbon and activated rice husks follows first-order kinetics and the rate constants for the adsorption processes decrease with increase in temperature.  相似文献

Novel magnetic Fe3O4@C@MgAl-layered double-hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles have been successfully prepared by the chemical self-assembly methods. The properties of surface functional groups, crystal structure, magnetism and surface morphology of magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravity-differential thermal gravity (TG-DTG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The adsorption studies of the novel adsorbent in removing heavy metals Cr (VI) from waste water showed that the maximum absorption amount of Cr(VI) was 152.0 mg/g at 40℃ and pH 6.0. The excellent adsorption capacity of the Fe3O4@C@MgAl-LDH nano-absorbents plus their easy separation, environmentally friendly composition and reusability makes them more suitable adsorbents for the removal of metal ions from waste water.  相似文献

Biochar has a global scientific attention for its ability to remove toxic elements from wastewaters. However, due to the disparity between practical short-term agronomic benefits and aspirations of biochar as an everlasting sustainable bio sorbent for the adsorption process, economic assessments of biochar have yet to be established. In this context, the current study, an economic approach of the biochars derived from agricultural wastes (Coconut shell, Groundnut Shell and Rice husk) for the removal of Basic Red 09 from wastewaters were demonstrated. Batch adsorption experimental set up was used to carry out the adsorption process. At equilibrium batch adsorption conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity of the biochars were 10, 46.3, and 44 mg/g for coconut shell, groundnut shell, and rice husk based biochars, respectively. A complete cost assessment was carried out for the agro-waste biochars for their adsorption performance. The biochars derived from groundnut shell and rice husk were shown to be the most cost effective for the Basic Red 09 sequestration from wastewater. The eco-friendly characteristics of these low-cost adsorbents for industrial applications were also discussed.  相似文献

Four adsorbents have been prepared from industrial wastes obtained from the steel and fertilizer industries and investigated for their utility to remove cationic dyes. Studies have shown that the adsorbents prepared from blast furnace sludge, dust, and slag have poor porosity and low surface area, resulting in very low efficiency for the adsorption of dyes. On the other hand, carbonaceous adsorbent prepared from carbon slurry waste obtained from the fertilizer industry was found to show good porosity and appreciable surface area and consequently adsorbs dyes to an appreciable extent. The adsorption of two cationic dyes, viz., rhodamine B and Bismark Brown R on carbonaceous adsorbent conforms to Langmuir equation, is a first-order process and pore diffusion controlled. As the adsorption of dyes investigated was appreciable on carbonaceous adsorbent, its efficiency was evaluated by comparing the results with those obtained on a standard activated charcoal sample. It was found that prepared carbonaceous adsorbent exhibits dye removal efficiency that is about 80-90% of that observed with standard activated charcoal samples. Thus, it can be fruitfully used for the removal of dyes and is a suitable alternative to standard activated charcoal in view of its cheaper cost.  相似文献

From emerging pollutants to emerged threat, researchers are continuously looking for promising technologies for wastewater treatment. Adsorption has been identified as the most convenient approach for treating wastewater at low-cost and with high-efficiency. Recently, graphene and its derivatives have gained heightened attention as novel adsorbents because of their unique molecular structure and outstanding physicochemical properties. Heavy metals, dyes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other pollutants, which are widely concerned recently, all show different adsorption behaviors. Numerous functional groups, resonating and delocalized π-electron system of graphene derivatives lead to the formation of various adsorptive interactions i.e., π-π interactions, electrostatic interactions, H-bonding, etc. with these venomous pollutants, and quarantine them in solution. The pristine form of graphene subsidiaries tends to exhibit low sorption efficiency due to high propensity of agglomeration, lack of selectivity, hydrophobicity and difficulty in phase separation after treatment. Therefore, designing of efficient graphene composites through the surface modification with numerous functional groups, polymers or nanoparticles is an ongoing challenge. Complex graphene composites are increasingly reported, but the fate of pollutants and adsorption mechanisms are still far to be fully clarified. This review summarizes the recent progresses in the application of graphene-based adsorbents for eliminating a wide range of organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater. A critical explanation is provided on the synthesis of graphene adsorbents, systematic adsorption and desorption mechanisms along with their pollutant removal performances under different experimental conditions. A brief perspective on upcoming research needs and challenges involved in the designing of high-quality graphene-based adsorbents are highlighted.  相似文献

Environmental pollution caused by toxic metals (heavy metals, radioactive metals, etc.) is one of the major global issues, thus removal of toxic metals from contaminated water seems to be particularly important. On the other hand, the recovery and enrichment of metals, especially noble metals, from waste water is also crucial. To address these issues, nanotechnology plays an essential role in environmental monitoring and pollution control. To remove metals from contaminated water, or enrich metals from waste water, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and their composites have attracted great attention due to their excellent adsorption performance. The removal efficiency for metal ions by CNTs was observed aroud 10–80 %, which could be improved to approach 100 % by selectively functionalizing CNTs with organic ligands. Herein, we review the applications of CNTs in treatment of toxic metal-containing wastewater for environmental monitoring and metals recovery. Due to their higher sensitivity and selectivity towards the enrichment of metals or detection of toxic metal pollution of the environment, and the latest research progress of using CNT composites for metal treatment is also discussed.  相似文献
