The preparation and properties of poly(1‐butene) (PB)/clay nanocomposites are described for the first time. Nanocomposites were prepared with the melt‐intercalation technique, using organically modified clay. The X‐ray diffraction patterns portrayed well‐defined diffraction peaks at higher d‐spacing than pristine clay, confirming the intercalation of polymer in silicate layers. Because PB exhibits time‐dependent polymorphism, the effect of clay on the phase transformation of PB was examined with thermal analysis. The phase transformation from a metastable tetragonal form to a stable hexagonal form was enhanced because of incorporation of layered silicates in the polymer matrix. The nanocomposites exhibited about a 40–140% increase in storage modulus depending on the clay content and significantly lower coefficient of thermal expansion. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The morphological behavior of a series of polymer‐layered silicate nanocomposites (PLSNs) has been investigated. The goal was to probe the effect of “textured” silicate surfaces on PLSN morphology. The nanocomposites were fabricated by mixing montmorillonite clay that was carefully modified with tailor‐made polystyrene (PS) surfactants into a PS homopolymer matrix, where the chemical similarity of the matrix polymer and surfactants assures complete miscibility of surfactant and homopolymer. To examine the effect of silicate surface “texture,” clay was modified with combinations of long and short surfactants. The samples were then direct melt annealed to allow the equilibrium morphology to develop, and characterized by small‐angle X‐ray scattering. Based on the implications of the Balazs model and other work on the wetting behavior of polymer melts with longer surfactants and textured surfaces we expected that the intercalation of the homopolymer matrix material into the modified clay would be promoted. Extensive characterization of both the modified clays as well as the resultant nanocomposites clearly show that the modified clays exhibit a high degree of order, but also that only phase‐separated morphologies are formed in the corresponding nanocomposites. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. X‐ray diffraction methods were used in an investigation of the structural changes in syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS)/clay nanocomposites. sPS/clay was prepared by the intercalation of sPS polymer into layered montmorillonite. Both X‐ray diffraction data and transmission electron microscopy micrographs of sPS/clay nanocomposites indicated that most of the swellable silicate layers were exfoliated and randomly dispersed in the sPS matrix. The X‐ray diffraction data also showed the presence of polymorphism in the sPS/clay nanocomposites. This polymorphic behavior was strongly dependent on the thermal history of the sPS/clay nanocomposites from the melt and on the content of clay in the sPS/clay nanocomposites. Quenching from the melt induced crystallization into the α‐crystalline form, and the addition of montmorillonite probably increased heterophase nucleation of the α‐crystalline form. The effect of the melt crystallization of sPS and sPS/clay nanocomposites at different temperatures on the crystalline phases was also examined. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isobutylene isoprene rubber (IIR)‐clay nanocomposites have been prepared successfully by melt intercalation with maleic anhydride‐grafted IIR (Ma‐g‐IIR) and organophilic clay. In IIR‐clay nanocomposites, the silicate layers of the clay were exfoliated and dispersed into the monolayer. The nanocomposites exhibited greater gas barrier properties compared with those of Ma‐g‐IIR. When 15 phr clay was added, gas barrier properties were 2.5 times greater than those of Ma‐g‐IIR. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1182–1188, 2006  相似文献

Heterogeneous‐layered silicate‐immobilized 2,6‐bis(imino)pyridyl iron (II) dichloride/MMAO catalysts, in which the active polymerization species are intercalated within sodium‐ and organomodified‐layered silicate galleries, were prepared for producing hybrid exfoliated polyethylene (PE) nanocomposites by means of in situ polymerization. The inorganic filler was first treated with modified‐methylaluminoxane (MMAO) to produce a supported cocatalyst: MMAO reacts with silicates replacing most of the organic surfactant, thus modifying the original crystallographic clay order. MMAO anchored to the nanoclay was able to activate polymerization iron complexes initiating the polymer growth directly from the filler lamellae interlayer. The polymerization mechanism taking place in between the montmorillonite lamellae separates the layers, thus promoting deagglomeration and effective clay dispersion. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that in situ polymerization by catalytically active iron complexes intercalated within the lower organomodified clay led to fine dispersion and high exfoliation extent. The intercalated clay catalysts displayed a longer polymerization life‐time and brought about ethylene polymerization more efficiently than analogous homogeneous systems. PEs having higher molecular masses were obtained. These benefits resulted to be dependent more on the filler nature than on the ligand environment around the iron metal center and the experimental synthetic route. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene‐layered silicate nanocomposites consisting of three components—pure polypropylene, maleated polypropylene, and organically modified silicate—were prepared by the melt‐intercalation method to investigate melt‐extensional properties such as melt strength, neck‐in test, and orientation behavior. The nanocomposites showed an enhanced tensile modulus, enhanced storage modulus, much enhanced melt tension, and reduced neck‐in during the melt processing as compared with neat polymer. The uniaxial drawing induced the silicate surface to align parallel to the sheet surface. The c and a* axes of the polypropylene crystals were bimodally oriented to the flow direction, and the b axes were oriented to the thickness direction. The bimodal orientation of the polypropylene crystal was enhanced with the concentration of silicates. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 158–167, 2005  相似文献

The thermal behavior and overall isothermal crystallization kinetics of a series of organophilic modified montmorillonite–poly(?‐caprolactone) nanocomposites were investigated. In general, the thermal behavior was influenced more by the type of dispersion than by the clay content. For nanocomposites in which silicate platelets were predominantly dispersed in the polymer matrix to give exfoliated structures, the thermal properties were improved with respect to those of neat poly(?‐caprolactone), whereas in those cases in which simply intercalated structures were attained, the thermal properties regularly decayed as the clay content increased. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, cyclic olefin copolymer (COC)/layered silicate nanocomposites (CLSNs) were prepared by the intercalation of COC polymer into organically‐modified layered silicate through the solution mixing process. Both X‐ray diffraction data and transmission electron microscopy images of CLSNs indicate most of the swellable silicate layers were disorderedly intercalated into the COC matrix. The effect of layered silicate on the mechanical and barrier properties of the fabricated nanocomposites shows significant improvements in the storage modulus and water permeability when compared with that of neat COC matrix. Surfaces of COC and CLSN films were modified by a mixture of oxygen (O2) and nitrogen (N2) plasmas with various treated times, system pressures, and radio frequency (RF) powers. The surfaces of plasma‐modified COC and CLSN were investigated using scanning probe microscopy and contact‐angle measurements. The exposure of the COC and CLSN film to the plasmas led to the combination of etching reactions of polymer surface initiated by plasma and the following addition reactions of new functional groups onto polymer surfaces to change the topology of COC film surfaces. The surface roughness was closely related to how high and how long the RF power was input into the system. The plasmas also led to changes in the surface properties of the CLSN surfaces from hydrophobic to hydrophilic; and the contact angle of water on the surface decreases. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the melt intercalation of cation‐exchange clay, mixtures of montmorillonite and poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) with various acrylonitrile contents were studied to examine the effect of specific interaction. When organic molecules with hydroxyl groups were used as intercalants for the clay, the amount of SAN penetrating the gallery of the layered structure of the clay and the corresponding increase in the gallery height occurred at a much higher rate because of the attractive specific interaction between acrylonitrile groups and polar groups on the clay surface. However, there was a limit to the increase in the gallery height, and the tendency for the gallery height to increase with the acrylonitrile group content disappeared when the acrylonitrile content was greater than 30 wt %, implying that excessive attractive interaction on the clay surfaces and polymer molecules glued the two adjacent silicate layers together; consequently, the increase in the gallery height could not be accomplished. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Nanocomposites were processed by melt blending two reference matrices, a metallocene polyethylene and a low density maleic anhydride‐grafted polyethylene with an organo‐modified montmorillonite. It was shown that the introduction of a maleated polyethylene compatibilizer was required to improve the clay nanoplatelet dispersion in the metallocene polyethylene‐based nanocomposites. Increasing the montmorillonite content led to a significant increase of the barrier properties. Interfacial agents such as oxidized paraffins were shown to be more effective to reduce the gas permeability than maleated polyethylene and the dependence of the gas transport properties was discussed not only as a function of the clay dispersion but also as a function of the clay/compatibilizer and compatibilizer/matrix interactions. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The properties of polypropylene composites can be tailored through the use of nanoclay fillers. The effectiveness of a metallocene‐catalyzed hydroxyl‐functional polypropylene in the compatibilization of polypropylene layered nanosilicate composites was studied, and the results were compared with those for a commercial maleic anhydride functionalized polypropylene. Polypropylene/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending, and two polypropylene/compatibilizer/organoclay ratios, 90/5/5 and 70/20/10, were characterized. The organomodification of the clay was carried out with octadecylamine and N‐methylundecenylamine. The structure of the layered silicate was studied by transmission electron microscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The fracture surfaces of the composites and thus the efficiency of the compatibilizers to penetrate the galleries of the organoclays were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and the melt viscosity was studied by stress‐controlled rotational rheometry. The nanostructure was observed with both alkyl amines used for intercalation. The fillers facilitated the processability of all the composites, consisting of equal amounts of compatibilizer and organoclay filler and, in some of the composites, containing twice as much compatibilizer as organoclay filler. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ε‐caprolactone)/montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared maintaining a constant inorganic content with three means: melt blending of poly(ε‐caprolactone) with natural or organomodified clays, in situ polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of organomodified clays, and initiation of ε‐caprolactone polymerization from the silicate layer with appropriate organomodified montmorillonites and activator. In this last case, the polymer chains were grafted to the silicate layers and it was possible to tune up the grafting density. The presence of clays did not modify the polymer crystallinity. It was shown that the in situ polymerization process from the clay surface improved the clay dispersion. The gas barrier properties of the different composite systems were discussed both as a function of the clay dispersion and of the matrix/clay interactions. The highest barrier properties were obtained for an exfoliated morphology and the highest grafting density. Similar evolution of the permeability and the diffusion coefficients was observed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 205–214, 2005  相似文献

Summary: A micrometer rod morphology was produced by self‐assembly of poly(oxypropylene)amine (POP‐amine) modified montmorillonite. The requisite primary structure was prepared by intercalation of the layered clay with POP‐amine salts. During the drying process, the primary units self‐assemble into micro‐rods that are 100–800 nm wide and 2–40 μm long. The stacking process may involve two complimentary forces – the POP hydrophobic effect and the silicate ionic interaction – acting in separate directions.

X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) methods have been used to investigate the crystallization behavior and crystalline structure of hexamethylenediamine (HMDA)‐modified maleic‐anhydride‐grafted polypropylene/clay (PP‐g‐MA/clay) nanocomposites. These nanocomposites have been prepared by using HMDA to graft the PP‐g‐MA (designated as PP‐g‐HMA) and then mixing the PP‐g‐HMA polymer in hot xylene solution, with the organically modified montmorillonite. Both X‐ray diffraction data and transmission electron microscopy images of PP‐g‐HMA/clay nanocomposites indicate that most of the swellable silicate layers are exfoliated and randomly dispersed into PP‐g‐HMA matrix. DSC isothermal results revealed that introducing 5 wt % of clay into the PP‐g‐HMA structure causes strongly heterogeneous nucleation, which induced a change of the crystal growth process from a three‐dimensional crystal growth to a two‐dimensional spherulitic growth. Mechanical properties of PP‐g‐HMA/clay nanocomposites performed by dynamic mechanical analysis show significant improvements in the storage modulus when compared to neat PP‐g‐HMA. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stable water‐in‐oil high internal phase emulsions, containing styrene and divinylbenzene monomers and exfoliated montmorillonite, were prepared and polymerized to obtain nanocomposite microcellular materials. The porous structure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption analyses. The exfoliation of clay was investigated by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses. The presence of inorganic filler did not modify the microcellular structure of the composite, while the use of modified clay significantly enhanced its mechanical properties. No influence on the thermal degradation was noted, except for materials with high clay content that tended to deteriorate at lower temperature than the other materials. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigated the role of layered silicate clay on morphology development in chaotic mixing of two immiscible polymers, polypropylene (PP) and polyamide 6 (PA6). The study showed that clay particles helped to produce droplets of much smaller size and with narrower size distribution due to their direct influence on the breakup of PP domains. In the experiments, a small quantity of organically modified layered silicate clay was initially mixed in PP and the mixture was blended with PA6 in a chaotic mixer. All morphological forms, such as lamellas, fibrils, and droplets were seen as in the case with no clay. The clay particles reduced interfacial tension between PP and PA6 phases. As a consequence, the PP domains sustained lamellar and fibrillar forms, and thin fibrils were formed. These thin fibrils in turn broke rapidly into smaller droplets. It was also found that a large fraction of clay particles migrated into PA6 phase and contained intercalated PA6 chains in their galleries. These results indicate that clay particles did not participate in compatibilization in this system. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 3638–3651, 2005  相似文献

A series of new poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)/layered silicate nanocomposites were prepared successfully by simple melt extrusion of PBS and organically modified layered silicates (OMLS). Three different types of OMLS were used for the preparation of nanocomposites: two functionalized ammonium salts modified montmorillonite and a phosphonium salt modified saponite. The structure of the nanocomposites in the nanometer scale was characterized with wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic observations. With three different types of layered silicates modified with three different types of surfactants, the effect of OMLS in nanocomposites was investigated by focusing on four major aspects: structural analysis, materials properties, melt rheological behavior, and biodegradability. Interestingly, all these nanocomposites exhibited concurrent improvements of material properties when compared with pure PBS. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)–clay (montmorillonite, hectorite, and laponite) nanocomposites were prepared by a melting intercalation procedure induced by microwave irradiation. The influence of parameters such as the time of irradiation, power, amount and relative ratio of the reagents, and relative humidity was investigated. X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, elemental microanalysis, Fourier transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy techniques were applied to characterize the resulting nanocomposites. Techniques involving impedance spectroscopy, thermoelectric power, and electrical polarization in the solid state were used to characterize the electrical properties of the nanocomposites. The electrical behavior of these PEO–silicate nanocomposites, including those containing an excess of alkaline metal salts in comparison with that of similar systems prepared by alternative procedures such as direct intercalation from polymer solutions or melting intercalation, was also examined. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper reviews our previous studies on the diffusion behavior in polymers clay nanocomposites. A geometric model for predicting the effective diffusivity through this type of systems as a function of clay sheets orientation, volume fraction, polymer clay interaction, and aspect ratio is proposed. Model predictions are compared to the effective diffusivity generated using random walk simulations as well as with predictions obtained from already existing theoretical models. Fair agreement is found between the model prediction and the results of numerical simulations. With respect to the already existing theoretical models, the present mathematical derivation seems more adequate to describe diffusion behavior in conventional nanocomposites systems (i.e. when fillers present very low values of volume to surface ratio). Experimental diffusion tests are discussed and interpreted with the aid of the proposed model. In addition to the aspect ratio and clay concentration, the polymer clay interactions as well as the sheets orientation are the factors controlling the barrier properties of polymer‐layered silicate nanocomposites. Good agreement was found in the case of samples containing exfoliated clay, whereas the model fails in the case of micro‐composites, in which the inorganic lamellae are agglomerated in clusters. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Exfoliated nylon‐11/layered silicate nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization by dispersing organoclay in 11‐aminoundecanoic acid monomer. The original clay was modified by a novel method with 11‐aminoundecanoic acid. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results show that stronger hydrogen bonds exist between nylon‐11 and organoclay than that of between nylon‐11 and original clay. The linear dynamic viscoelasticity of organoclay nanocomposites was investigated. Before taking rheological measurements, the exfoliated and intercalating structures and the thermal properties were characterized using X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that the clay was uniformly distributed in nylon‐11 matrix during in situ polymerization of clay with 4 wt % or less. The presence of clay in nylon‐11 matrix increased the crystallization temperature and the thermal stability of nanocomposites prepared. Rheological properties such as storage modulus, loss modulus, and relative viscosity have close relationship with the dispersion favorably compatible with the organically modified clay. Comparing with neat nylon‐11, the nanocomposites show much higher dynamic modulus and stronger shear thinning behavior. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
