Deposition of metals on TiO2 semiconductor particles (M‐TiO2) results in hybrid Janus objects combining the properties of both materials. One of the techniques proposed to generate Janus particles is bipolar electrochemistry (BPE). The concept can be applied in a straightforward way for the site‐selective modification of conducting particles, but is much less obvious to use for semiconductors. Herein we report the bulk synthesis of anisotropic M‐TiO2 particles based on the synergy of BPE and photochemistry, allowing the intrinsic limitations, when they are used separately, to be overcome. When applying electric fields during irradiation, electrons and holes can be efficiently separated, thus breaking the symmetry of particles by modifying them selectively and in a wireless way on one side with either gold or platinum. Such hybrid materials are an important first step towards high‐performance designer catalyst particles, for example for photosplitting of water.  相似文献

Molecular‐surfactant‐stabilized emulsions are susceptible to coalescence and Ostwald ripening. Amphiphilic particles, which have a much stronger anchoring strength at the interface, could effectively alleviate these problems to form stable Pickering emulsions. Herein, we describe a versatile method to fabricate biocompatible amphiphilic dimer particles through controlled coprecipitation and phase separation. The dimer particles consist of a hydrophobic PLA bulb and a hydrophilic shellac–PEG bulb, thus resembling nonionic molecular surfactants. The size and diameter ratio of the dimer particles are readily tunable, providing flexible control over the water/oil interfacial curvature and thus the type of emulsion. The particle‐stabilized emulsions were stable for a long period of time and could be destabilized through a pH‐triggered response. The biocompatible amphiphilic dimer particles with tunable morphology and functionality are thus ideal colloidal surfactants for various applications.  相似文献

Materials with Janus structures are attractive for wide applications in materials science. Although extensive efforts in the synthesis of Janus particles have been reported, the synthesis of sub‐10 nm Janus nanoparticles is still challenging. Herein, the synthesis of Janus gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) based on interface‐directed self‐assembly is reported. Polystyrene (PS) colloidal particles with AuNPs on the surface were prepared by interface‐directed self‐assembly, and the colloidal particles were used as templates for the synthesis of Janus AuNPs. To prepare colloidal particles, thiol‐terminated polystyrene (PS‐SH) was dissolved in toluene and citrate‐stabilized AuNPs were dispersed in aqueous solution. Upon mixing the two solutions, PS‐SH chains were grafted to the surface of AuNPs and amphiphilic AuNPs were formed at the liquid–liquid interface. PS colloidal particles decorated with AuNPs on the surfaces were prepared by adding the emulsion to excess methanol. On the surface, AuNPs were partially embedded in the colloidal particles. The outer regions of the AuNPs were exposed to the solution and were functionalized through the grafting of atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator. Poly[2‐(dimethamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) on AuNPs were prepared by surface‐initiated ATRP. After centrifugation and dissolving the colloidal particles in tetrahydrofuran (THF), Janus AuNPs with PS and PDMAEMA on two hemispheres were obtained. In acidic pH, Janus AuNPs are amphiphilic and are able to emulsify oil droplets in water; in basic pH, the Janus AuNPs are hydrophobic. In mixtures of THF/methanol at a volume ratio of 1:5, the Janus AuNPs self‐assemble into bilayer structures with collapsed PS in the interiors and solvated PDMAEMA at the exteriors of the structures.  相似文献

The sonochemical synthesis of nanosized surface-dissymmetrical (Janus) particles is described. The Janus particles were composed of silica and polystyrene, with the polystyrene portion loaded with nanosized magnetite particles. It is shown that the Janus particles can be used to form kinetically stable oil-in-water emulsions that can be spontaneously broken on application of an external magnetic field. The one-pot synthetic process used to prepare the Janus particles has several advantages over other conventional methods of producing such particles.  相似文献

Multifunctional Janus particles have a variety of applications in a wide range of fields. However, to achieve many of these applications, high-throughput, low-cost techniques are needed to synthesize these particles with precise control of the various structural/physical/chemical properties. Microfluidics provides a unique platform to fabricate Janus particles using carefully controlled liquid flow in microfluidic channels to form Janus droplets and various types of solidification methods to solidify them into Janus particles. In this Focus article, we summarize the most recent representative works on Janus particle fabrication in microfluidics. The applications of Janus particles in biomedical areas are emphasized. We believe that microfluidics-enabled multifunctional Janus particles could resolve multiple prevalent issues in biomedicine (e.g., disease monitoring at an early stage, high-throughput bioassays, therapeutic delivery) if persistent effort and collaboration are devoted to this direction.  相似文献

Core-shell particles with cross-linked core and shell were used as seed particles to produce composite Janus particles. It was found that when the shell has distinctly higher cross-linking degree than the core, Janus particles with very unusual structures can be obtained. These particles have two parts, with one part embraced partially or entirely by the other part, adjustable by parameters such as phase ratio or cross-linking degree. On the basis of experimental observations, a possible mechanism for the formation of such unusual Janus particles has been proposed. Janus particles with arms are used to emulsify water-toluene mixtures, forming oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions at very high internal phase content with rather low concentration of particles. Nonspherical emulsion droplets were observed, indicating that these Janus particles are likely to jam at the interface, forming a strong protecting layer to stabilize emulsions.  相似文献

With its unique structure of two compartments, Janus particles can be used for many applications for which monomorphic particles are inadequate, including to be used as a drug delivery system to deliver multiple payloads with widely different solubility. Here we report on a fluidic nanoprecipitation system (FNPS), capable of fabricating biocompatible Janus polymeric nanoparticles comprised of the FDA-approved polymer poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). The FNPS contains dual inlets, one for each half of the particle, that insert into the precipitation stream. The system provides a one-step approach for production of Janus polymeric particles with submicrometer diameters and is likely amenable to substantial scale-up. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of biocompatible Janus nanoparticles that encapsulate a hydrophobic drug (paclitaxel) on one side and a hydrophilic drug (doxorubicin hydrochloride) on the other.  相似文献

Synthetic asymmetrical systems, Janus particles and patchy particles, are capable of undergoing hierarchical assembly processes that mimic those of Nature, to serve as switchable devices, optical probes, phase-transfer catalysts, and multifunctional drug carriers, each of which benefits from opposing surface patterns that behave differently. Production of nanometer-sized Janus particles that are equipped with efficient chemistries remains a challenge. A robust Janus-faced polymer nanoparticle framework that presents two orthogonally click-reactive surface chemistries has been generated by a recyclable strategy that involves reactive functional group transfer by templating against gold nanoparticle substrates. This anisotropic functionalization approach is compatible with a wide range of soft materials, providing Janus nanoparticles for the construction of dual-functionalized devices by accurately controlling chemical functionality at the nanoscopic level.  相似文献

We report a strategy for using magnetic Janus microparticles to control the stimulation of T cell signaling with single‐cell precision. To achieve this, we designed Janus particles that are magnetically responsive on one hemisphere and stimulatory to T cells on the other side. By manipulating the rotation and locomotion of Janus particles under an external magnetic field, we could control the orientation of the particle–cell recognition and thereby the initiation of T cell activation. This study demonstrates a step towards employing anisotropic material properties of Janus particles to control single‐cell activities without the need of complex magnetic manipulation devices.  相似文献

Adhesion force studies of Janus nanoparticles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Janus nanoparticles represent a unique nanoscale analogue to the conventional surfactant molecules, exhibiting hydrophobic characters on one side and hydrophilic characters on the other. Yet, direct visualization of the asymmetric surface structures of the particles remains a challenge. In this paper, we used a simple technique based on AFM adhesion force measurements to examine the two distinctly different hemispheres of the Janus particles at the molecular level. Experimentally, the Janus nanoparticles were prepared by ligand exchange reactions at the air-water interface. The particles were then immobilized onto a substrate surface with the particle orientation controlled by the chemical functionalization of the substrate surface, and an AFM adhesion force was employed to measure the interactions between the tip of a bare silicon probe and the Janus nanoparticles. It was found that when the hydrophilic side of the particles was exposed, the adhesion force was substantially greater than that with the hydrophobic side exposed, as the silicon probes typically exhibit hydrophilic properties. These studies provide further confirmation of the amphiphilic nature of the Janus nanoparticles.  相似文献

The evaporation driven self‐assembly of novel colloidal silica Janus particles was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy in comparison to unfunctionalized silica particles. The cyclodextrin‐ and azobenzene‐modified compound was obtained utilizing Pickering emulsion approach, in which the particles were immobilized on solidified wax droplets and subsequently functionalized. Silica particles were modified with 3‐aminopropyl trimethoxysilane and afterward reacted with tosyl‐β‐CD or phenylazo(benzoic acid), respectively. Mesoscopic structures of the colloidal dispersions, as dried films from aqueous solution, have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. Interestingly, it has been observed that the Janus particles show a significantly different evaporation‐induced assembly than the unmodified particles.

Following recent theoretical predictions, we report on the first experiments on the interfacial activity of so-called Janus nanoparticles (i.e., bifacial particles consisting of a gold and an iron oxide moiety). Using pendant drop tensiometry, we show that the amphiphilicity derived from the Janus character of the particles leads to a significantly higher interfacial activity compared to that of the respective homogeneous particles of the same size. The self-assembly of Janus particles at the hexane-water interface results in a significant decrease in the interfacial tension. Furthermore, we demonstrate control over the interfacial activity by tuning the particles' amphiphilicity via ligand-exchange reactions.  相似文献

Although the concept of Janus particles was raised in the early 1990s, the related research has not attracted considerable interest until recently due to the special properties and applications of these colloidal particles as well as the advances in new fabrications. Janus particles can be divided into three categories: polymeric, inorganic, and polymeric-inorganic, and each kind of Janus particles can be spherical, dumbbell-like, half raspberry-like, cylindrical, disk-like, or any of a variety of other shapes. Different Janus particles may share common preparation principles or require specific fabrication processes, and may have different assembly behaviours and properties. This critical review discusses the main fabrication methods of the three kinds of Janus particles, and then highlights the important properties and applications of these Janus particles developed in recent years, and finally proposes some perspectives on the future of Janus particle research and development.

Based on hyperbranched polyglycerol (PG), a route to prepare particles with a novel topology was developed. The hydroxyls of PG were converted to trithiocarbonates, and the latter were used to mediate the surface graft polymerization of N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl acrylate. The poly(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl acrylate) shell was crosslinked by 1,6‐dibromohexane and then parted from the core by the cleavage of trithiocarbonates with sodium borohydride. Novel particles with thiol groups located on the interface between the PG core and poly(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl acrylate) shell were thus formed. The shell crosslinking could be performed at very high solid contents (2–4%). These polymer particles showed pH‐ and temperature‐dependent solubility. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of an innovative self‐propelled Janus nanomotor with a diameter of about 75 nm that can be used as a drug carrier is described. The Janus nanomotor is based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with chromium/platinum metallic caps and propelled by decomposing hydrogen peroxide to generate oxygen as a driving force with speeds up to 20.2 μm s?1 (about 267 body lengths per second). The diffusion coefficient (D) of nanomotors with different H2O2 concentrations is calculated by tracking the movement of individual particles recorded by means of a self‐assembled fluorescence microscope and is significantly larger than free Brownian motion. The traction of a single Janus MSN nanomotor is estimated to be about 13.47×10?15 N. Finally, intracellular localization and drug release in vitro shows that the amount of Janus MSN nanomotors entering the cells is more than MSNs with same culture time and particle concentrations, meanwhile anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride loaded in Janus MSNs can be slowly released by biodegradation of lipid bilayers in cells.  相似文献

Microfluidic generation of multifunctional quantum dot barcode particles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We develop a new strategy to prepare quantum dot (QD) barcode particles by polymerizing double-emulsion droplets prepared in capillary microfluidic devices. The resultant barcode particles are composed of stable QD-tagged core particles surrounded by hydrogel shells. These particles exhibit uniform spectral characteristics and excellent coding capability, as confirmed by photoluminescence analyses. By using double-emulsion droplets with two inner droplets of distinct phases as templates, we have also fabricated anisotropic magnetic barcode particles with two separate cores or with a Janus core. These particles enable optical encoding and magnetic separation, thus making them excellent functional barcode particles in biomedical applications.  相似文献

We introduce the notion of "Janus balance" (J), defined as the dimensionless ratio of work to transfer an amphiphilic colloidal particle (a "Janus particle") from the oil-water interface into the oil phase, normalized by the work needed to move it into the water phase. The J value can be calculated simply from the interfacial contact angle and the geometry of Janus particles, without the need to know the interfacial energy. It is demonstrated that Janus particles of the same chemical composition but different geometries will have the highest adsorption energy when J = 1. Even for particles of homogeneous chemical makeup, the Janus balance concept can be applied when considering the contact angle hysteresis in desorbing the particle from equilibrium into the water or oil phase. The Janus balance concept may enable predictions of how a Janus particle behaves with respect to efficiency and function as a solid surfactant, as the Janus balance of solid surfactants is the analog of the classical hydrophile-lipophile balance of small surfactant molecules.  相似文献
