Cu catalysts are well-known for their good performance in CO2 conversion. Compared to CO and CH4 production, C2 products have higher volumetric energy densities and are more valuable in industrial applications. In this work, we screened the catalytic ability of C2 production on several 1D Cu atomic chain structures and find that Cu edge-decorated zigzag graphene nanoribbons (Cu−ZGNR) are capable of catalyzing CO2 conversion to ethanol, and CH3CH2OH is the main C2 product with a maximum free energy change of 0.60 eV. The planar tetracoordinate carbon structures in Cu-ZGNR provide unique chemical bonding features for catalytic reaction on the Cu atoms. Detailed mechanism analyses with transition states search show that CO* dimerization is favored against CHO* formation in the reaction. By adjusting the CO* coverage, the selectivity of the C2 product can be enhanced owing to less pronounced steric effects for COCHO*, which is feasible under experimental conditions. This study expands the catalyst family for C2 products from CO2 based on nano carbon structures with new features.  相似文献

The large-scale deployment of CO2 electroreduction is hampered by deficient carbon utilization in neutral and alkaline electrolytes due to CO2 loss into (bi)carbonates. Switching to acidic media mitigates carbonation, but suffers from low product selectivity because of hydrogen evolution. Here we report a crown ether decoration strategy on a Cu catalyst to enhance carbon utilization and selectivity of CO2 methanation under acidic conditions. Macrocyclic 18-Crown-6 is found to enrich potassium cations near the Cu electrode surface, simultaneously enhancing the interfacial electric field to stabilize the *CO intermediate and accelerate water dissociation to boost *CO protonation. Remarkably, the mixture of 18-Crown-6 and Cu nanoparticles affords a CH4 Faradaic efficiency of 51.2 % and a single pass carbon efficiency of 43.0 % toward CO2 electroreduction in electrolyte with pH=2. This study provides a facile strategy to promote CH4 selectivity and carbon utilization by modifying Cu catalysts with supramolecules.  相似文献

Cu-based catalysts have been widely applied in electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2ER) to produce multicarbon (C2+) feedstocks (e.g., C2H4). However, the high energy barriers for CO2 activation on the Cu surface is a challenge for a high catalytic efficiency and product selectivity. Herein, we developed an in situ *CO generation and spillover strategy by engineering single Ni atoms on a pyridinic N-enriched carbon support with a sodalite (SOD) topology (Ni-SOD/NC) that acted as a donor to feed adjacent Cu nanoparticles (NPs) with *CO intermediate. As a result, a high C2H4 selectivity of 62.5 % and an industrial-level current density of 160 mA cm−2 at a low potential of −0.72 V were achieved. Our studies revealed that the isolated NiN3 active sites with adjacent pyridinic N species facilitated the *CO desorption and the massive *CO intermediate released from Ni-SOD/NC then overflowed to Cu NPs surface to enrich the *CO coverage for improving the selectivity of CO2ER to C2H4.  相似文献

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to value-added chemicals is an attractive strategy for greenhouse gas mitigation and carbon recycle. Carbon material is one of most promising electrocatalysts but its product selectivity is limited by few modulating approaches for active sites. Herein, the predominant pyridinic N-B sites (accounting for 80% to all N species) are fabricated in hierarchically porous structure of graphene nanoribbons/amorphous carbon. The graphene nanoribbons and porous structure can accelerate electron and ion/gas transport during CO2RR, respectively. This carbon electrocatalyst exhibits excellent selectivity toward CO2 reduction to CH4 with the faradaic efficiency of 68% at −0.50 V vs. RHE. As demonstrated by density functional theory, a proper adsorbed energy of *CO and *CH2O are generated on the pyridinic N-B site resulting into high CH4 selectivity. Therefore, this study provides a novel method to modulate active sites of carbon-based electrocatalyst to obtain high CH4 selectivity.  相似文献

It is still a great challenge to achieve high selectivity of CH4 in CO2 electroreduction reactions (CO2RR) because of the similar reduction potentials of possible products and the sluggish kinetics for CO2 activation. Stabilizing key reaction intermediates by single type of active sites supported on porous conductive material is crucial to achieve high selectivity for single product such as CH4. Here, Cu2O(111) quantum dots with an average size of 3.5 nm are in situ synthesized on a porous conductive copper-based metal–organic framework (CuHHTP), exhibiting high selectivity of 73 % towards CH4 with partial current density of 10.8 mA cm−2 at −1.4 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode) in CO2RR. Operando infrared spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal that the key intermediates (such as *CH2O and *OCH3) involved in the pathway of CH4 formation are stabilized by the single active Cu2O(111) and hydrogen bonding, thus generating CH4 instead of CO.  相似文献

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR) with controlled product selectivity is realized on Ag−Cu bimetallic surface alloys, with high selectivity towards C2 hydrocarbons/alcohols (≈60 % faradaic efficiency, FE), C1 hydrocarbons/alcohols (≈41 % FE) and CO (≈74 % FE) achieved by tuning surface compositions and applied potentials. In situ spectral investigations and theoretical calculations reveal that surface-composition-dependent d-band center could tune *CO binding strengths, regulating the *CO subsequent reaction pathways and then the product selectivity. Further adjusting the applied potentials will alter the energy of participated electrons, which leads to controlled ECO2RR selectivity towards desired products. A predominant region map, with an indicator proposed to evaluate the thermodynamic predominance of the *CO subsequent reactions, is then provided as a reliable theoretical guidance for the controllable ECO2RR product selectivity over bimetallic alloys.  相似文献

We propose an effective highest occupied d-orbital modulation strategy engendered by breaking the coordination symmetry of sites in the atomically precise Cu nanocluster (NC) to switch the product of CO2 electroreduction from HCOOH/CO to higher-valued hydrocarbons. An atomically well-defined Cu6 NC with symmetry-broken Cu−S2N1 active sites (named Cu6(MBD)6, MBD=2-mercaptobenzimidazole) was designed and synthesized by a judicious choice of ligand containing both S and N coordination atoms. Different from the previously reported high HCOOH selectivity of Cu NCs with Cu−S3 sites, the Cu6(MBD)6 with Cu−S2N1 coordination structure shows a high Faradaic efficiency toward hydrocarbons of 65.5 % at −1.4 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (including 42.5 % CH4 and 23 % C2H4), with the hydrocarbons partial current density of −183.4 mA cm−2. Theoretical calculations reveal that the symmetry-broken Cu−S2N1 sites can rearrange the Cu 3d orbitals with as the highest occupied d-orbital, thus favoring the generation of key intermediate *COOH instead of *OCHO to favor *CO formation, followed by hydrogenation and/or C−C coupling to produce hydrocarbons. This is the first attempt to regulate the coordination mode of Cu atom in Cu NCs for hydrocarbons generation, and provides new inspiration for designing atomically precise NCs for efficient CO2RR towards highly-valued products.  相似文献

The chemical selectivity and faradaic efficiency of high-index Cu facets for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is investigated. More specifically, shape-controlled nanoparticles enclosed by Cu {hk0} facets are fabricated using Cu multilayer deposition at three distinct layer thicknesses on the surface facets of Au truncated ditetragonal nanoprisms (Au DTPs). Au DTPs are shapes enclosed by 12 high-index {310} facets. Facet angle analysis confirms DTP geometry. Elemental mapping analysis shows Cu surface layers are uniformly distributed on the Au {310} facets of the DTPs. The 7 nm Au@Cu DTPs high-index {hk0} facets exhibit a CH4 : CO product ratio of almost 10 : 1 compared to a 1 : 1 ratio for the reference 7 nm Au@Cu nanoparticles (NPs). Operando Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra disclose reactive adsorbed *CO as the main intermediate, whereas CO stripping experiments reveal the high-index facets enhance the *CO formation followed by rapid desorption or hydrogenation.  相似文献

Developing copper-free catalysts for CO2 conversion into hydrocarbons and oxygenates is highly desirable for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Herein, we report a cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) and zinc–nitrogen–carbon (Zn-N-C) tandem catalyst for CO2RR to CH4. This tandem catalyst shows a more than 100 times enhancement of the CH4/CO production rate ratio compared with CoPc or Zn-N-C alone. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical CO reduction reaction results suggest that CO2 is first reduced into CO over CoPc and then CO diffuses onto Zn-N-C for further conversion into CH4 over Zn-N4 site, decoupling complicated CO2RR pathway on single active site into a two-step tandem reaction. Moreover, mechanistic analysis indicates that CoPc not only generates CO but also enhances the availability of *H over adjacent N sites in Zn-N4, which is the key to achieve the high CH4 production rate and understand the intriguing electrocatalytic behavior which is distinctive to copper-based tandem catalysts.  相似文献

Atomically precise Cu clusters are highly desirable as catalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), and they provide an appropriate model platform for elaborating their structure–activity relationship. However, an efficient overall photocatalytic CO2RR with H2O using assembled Cu-cluster aggregates as single component photocatalyst has not been reported. Herein, we report a stable crystalline Cu−S−N cluster photocatalyst with local protonated N−H groups (denoted as Cu6−NH ). The catalyst exhibits suitable photocatalytic redox potentials, high structural stability, active catalytic species, and a narrow band gap, which account for its outstanding photocatalytic CO2RR performance under visible light, with ≈100 % selectivity for CO evolution. Remarkably, systematic isostructural Cu-cluster control experiments, in situ infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations revealed that the protonated pyrimidine N atoms in the Cu6−NH cluster act as a proton relay station, providing a local proton during the photocatalytic CO2RR. This efficiently lowers the energy barrier for the formation of the *COOH intermediate, which is the rate-limiting step, efficiently enhancing the photocatalytic performance. This work lays the foundation for the development of atomically precise metal-cluster-based photocatalysts.  相似文献

The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) can dynamise the carbon cycle by lowering anthropogenic CO2 emissions and sustainably producing valuable fuels and chemical feedstocks. Methanol is arguably the most desirable C1 product of CO2RR, although it typically forms in negligible amounts. In our search for efficient methanol‐producing CO2RR catalysts, we have engineered Ag‐Zn catalysts by pulse‐depositing Zn dendrites onto Ag foams (PD‐Zn/Ag foam). By themselves, Zn and Ag cannot effectively reduce CO2 to CH3OH, while their alloys produce CH3OH with Faradaic efficiencies of approximately 1 %. Interestingly, with nanostructuring PD‐Zn/Ag foam reduces CO2 to CH3OH with Faradaic efficiency and current density values reaching as high as 10.5 % and ?2.7 mA cm?2, respectively. Control experiments and DFT calculations pinpoint strained undercoordinated Zn atoms as the active sites for CO2RR to CH3OH in a reaction pathway mediated by adsorbed CO and formaldehyde. Surprisingly, the stability of the *CHO intermediate does not influence the activity.  相似文献

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over Cu catalysts exhibits enormous potential for efficiently converting CO2 to ethylene (C2H4). However, achieving high C2H4 selectivity remains a considerable challenge due to the propensity of Cu catalysts to undergo structural reconstruction during CO2RR. Herein, we report an in situ molecule modification strategy that involves tannic acid (TA) molecules adaptive regulating the reconstruction of a Cu-based material to a pathway that facilitates CO2 reduction to C2H4 products. An excellent Faraday efficiency (FE) of 63.6 % on C2H4 with a current density of 497.2 mA cm−2 in flow cell was achieved, about 6.5 times higher than the pristine Cu catalyst which mainly produce CH4. The in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman studies reveal that the hydroxyl group in TA stabilizes Cuδ+ during the CO2RR. Furthermore, theoretical calculations demonstrate that the Cuδ+/Cu0 interfaces lower the activation energy barrier for *CO dimerization, and hydroxyl species stabilize the *COH intermediate via hydrogen bonding, thereby promoting C2H4 production. Such molecule engineering modulated electronic structure provides a promising strategy to achieve highly selective CO2 reduction to value-added chemicals.  相似文献

Anchoring transition metal (TM) atoms on suitable substrates to form single-atom catalysts (SACs) is a novel approach to constructing electrocatalysts. Graphdiyne with sp−sp2 hybridized carbon atoms and uniformly distributed pores have been considered as a potential carbon material for supporting metal atoms in a variety of catalytic processes. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the single TM atom anchoring on graphdiyne (TM1−GDY, TM=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co and Cu) as the catalysts for CO2 reduction. After anchoring metal atoms on GDY, the catalytic activity of TM1−GDY (TM=Mn, Co and Cu) for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) are significantly improved comparing with the pristine GDY. Among the studied TM1−GDY, Cu1−GDY shows excellent electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction for which the product is HCOOH and the limiting potential (UL) is −0.16 V. Mn1−GDY and Co1−GDY exhibit superior catalytic selectivity for CO2 reduction to CH4 with UL of −0.62 and −0.34 V, respectively. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by TM1−GDY (TM=Mn, Co and Cu) occurs on carbon atoms, while the active sites of CO2RR are the transition metal atoms . The present work is expected to provide a solid theoretical basis for CO2 conversion into valuable hydrocarbons.  相似文献

Hybrid organic/inorganic composites with the organic phase tailored to modulate local chemical environment at the Cu surface arise as an enchanting category of catalysts for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). A fundamental understanding on how the organics of different functionality, polarity, and hydrophobicity affect the reaction path is, however, still lacking to guide rational catalyst design. Herein, polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (PANI) manifesting different Brønsted basicity are compared for their regulatory roles on the CO2RR pathways regarding *CO coverage, proton source and interfacial polarity. Concerted efforts from in situ IR, Raman and operando modelling unveil that at the PPy/Cu interface with limited *CO coverage, hydridic *H produced by the Volmer step favors the carbon hydrogenation of *CO to form *CHO through a Tafel process; Whereas at the PANI/Cu interface with concentrated CO2 and high *CO coverage, protonic H+ shuttled through the benzenoid -NH- protonates the oxygen of *CO, yielding *COH for asymmetric coupling with nearby *CO to form *OCCOH under favored energetics. As a result of the tailored chemical environment, the restructured PANI/Cu composite demonstrates a high partial current density of 0.41 A cm−2 at a maximal Faraday efficiency of 67.5 % for ethylene production, ranking among states of the art.  相似文献

In this work, the modulation of activity and selectivity via photoreduction of carbon dioxide under simulated sunlight was achieved by treating P25 and P25/Pt NPs with KOH. It found that KOH treatment could significantly improve the overall conversion efficiency and switch the selectivity for CO. Photoelectric characterizations and CO2-TPD demonstrated that the synergistic effect of K+ and OH- accelerated the separation and migration of photogenerated charges, and also improved CO2 adsorption level. Significantly, the K ions could act as active sites for CO2 adsorption and further activation. In situ FTIR measurements and DFT calculations confirmed that K+ enhanced the charge density of adjacent atoms and stabilize CO* groups, reducing the reaction energy barrier and inducing the switching of original CH4 to CO, which played a selective regulatory role. This study provides insights into the photocatalytic activity and selectivity of alkali-treated photocatalysts and facilitates the design of efficient and product-specific photocatalysis.  相似文献

The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into more valuable chemical compounds represents a critical objective for addressing environmental challenges and advancing sustainable energy sources. The CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) holds promise for transforming CO2 into versatile feedstock materials and fuels. Leveraging first-principles methodologies provides a robust approach to evaluate catalysts and steer experimental efforts. In this study, we examine the CO2RR process using a diverse array of representative cluster models derived from X-MOF-74 (where X encompasses Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn) through first-principles methods. Notably, our investigation highlights the Fe-MOF-74 cluster's unique attributes, including favorable CO2 binding and the lowest limiting potential of the studied clusters for converting CO2 to methane (CH4) at 0.32 eV. Our analysis identified critical factors driving the selective CO2RR pathway, enabling the formation CH4 on the Fe-MOF-74 cluster. These factors involve less favorable reduction of hydrogen to H2 and strong binding affinities between the Fe open-metal site and reduction intermediates, effectively curtailing desorption processes of closed-shell intermediates such as formic acid (HCOOH), formaldehyde (CH2O), and methanol (CH3OH), to lead to selective CH4 formation.  相似文献

Constructing Cu single-atoms (SAs) catalysts is considered as one of the most effective strategies to enhance the performance of electrochemical reduction of CO2 (e-CO2RR) towards CH4, however there are challenges with activity, selectivity, and a cumbersome fabrication process. Herein, by virtue of the meta-position structure of alkynyl in 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene and the interaction between Cu and −C≡C−, a Cu SAs electrocatalyst (Cu−SAs/HGDY), containing low-coordination Cu−C2 active sites, was synthesized through a simple and efficient one-step method. Notably, this represents the first achievement of preparing Cu SAs catalysts with Cu−C2 coordination structure, which exhibited high CO2-to-CH4 selectivity (72.1 %) with a high CH4 partial current density of 230.7 mA cm−2, and a turnover frequency as high as 2756 h−1, dramatically outperforming currently reported catalysts. Comprehensive experiments and calculations verified the low-coordination Cu−C2 structure not only endowed the Cu SAs center more positive electricity but also promoted the formation of H•, which contributed to the outstanding e-CO2RR to CH4 electrocatalytic performance of Cu−SAs/HGDY. Our work provides a novel H⋅-transferring mechanism for e-CO2RR to CH4 and offers a protocol for the preparation of two-coordinated Cu SAs catalysts.  相似文献

Favoring the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over the hydrogen evolution reaction and controlling the selectivity towards multicarbon products are currently major scientific challenges in sustainable energy research. It is known that the morphology of the catalyst can modulate catalytic activity and selectivity, yet this remains a relatively underexplored area in electrochemical CO2 reduction. Here, we exploit the material tunability afforded by colloidal chemistry to establish unambiguous structure/property relations between Cu nanocrystals and their behavior as electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. Our study reveals a non‐monotonic size‐dependence of the selectivity in cube‐shaped copper nanocrystals. Among 24 nm, 44 nm and 63 nm cubes tested, the cubes with 44 nm edge length exhibited the highest selectivity towards CO2RR (80 %) and faradaic efficiency for ethylene (41 %). Statistical analysis of the surface atom density suggests the key role played by edge sites in CO2RR.  相似文献

Artificial photosynthesis is a promising strategy for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) into fuels and value-added chemical products. However, photocatalysts usually suffered from low activity and product selectivity due to the sluggish dynamic transfer of photoexcited charge carriers. Herein, we describe anchoring of Ag single atoms on hollow porous polygonal C3N4 nanotubes (PCN) to form the photocatalyst Ag1@PCN with Ag−N3 coordination for CO2 photoreduction using H2O as the reductant. The as-synthesized Ag1@PCN exhibits a high CO production rate of 0.32 μmol h−1 (mass of catalyst: 2 mg), a high selectivity (>94 %), and an excellent stability in the long term. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) reveal that the strong metal–support interactions (Ag−N3) favor *CO2 adsorption, *COOH generation and desorption, and accelerate dynamic transfer of photoexcited charge carriers between C3N4 and Ag single atoms, thereby accounting for the enhanced CO2 photoreduction activity with a high CO selectivity. This work provides a deep insight into the important role of strong metal–support interactions in enhancing the photoactivity and CO selectivity of CO2 photoreduction.  相似文献

The development of efficient electrocatalysts with non-copper metal sites for electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (eCO2RR) to hydrocarbons and oxygenates is highly desirable, but still a great challenge. Herein, a stable metal–organic framework (DMA)4[Sn2(THO)2] (Sn-THO, THO6− = triphenylene-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakis(olate), DMA = dimethylammonium) with isolated and distorted octahedral SnO62− active sites is reported as an electrocatalyst for eCO2RR, showing an exceptional performance for eCO2RR to the CH4 product rather than the common products formate and CO for reported Sn-based catalysts. The partial current density of CH4 reaches a high value of 34.5 mA cm−2, surpassing most reported copper-based and all non-Cu metal-based catalysts. Our experimental and theoretical results revealed that the isolated SnO62− active site favors the formation of key *OCOH species to produce CH4 and can greatly inhibit the formation of *OCHO and *COOH species to produce *HCOOH and *CO, respectively.  相似文献
