Several isoimides substituted with hydroxylated substituents were prepared, and allowed to react with acryloyl chloride to form the corresponding acrylate esters. The acrylates were polymerized free radically using AIBN as the initiator yielding medium molecular weight polyacrylates. Upon warming the prepared polyacrylates or treatment with base most of the isoimide pending groups rearranged to the stable form of the corresponding imides. These rearrangements were accompanied by increase in softening points of the polymers forming thermally more stable resins. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 3‐Hydroxypropyl acrylate, 4‐hydroxybutyl acrylate, 2‐methyl‐3‐hydroxypropyl acrylate, 2‐hydroxypropyl acrylate, neopentyl glycol acrylate, glyceryl acrylate, and dihydroxyhexyl acrylate were prepared via transacylation reaction of methyl acrylate with diols and triols catalyzed by Candida antarctica lipase B. After removal of the enzyme by filtration and the methyl acrylate by distillation, the monomers were polymerized via free radical polymerization (FRP) with azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator and nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) employing Blocbuilder? alkoxyamine initiator and SG‐1 free nitroxide resulting in hydroxy functional poly(acrylates). The NMP kinetics are discussed in detail. In addition, the polymers obtained by FRP and NMP are compared and the results are related to the amount of bisacrylates that are present in the initial monomer mixtures resulting from the transacylation reactions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of new octafunctional alkoxyamine initiators for nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP), by the derivatization of resorcinarene with nitroxide free radicals viz TEMPO and a freshly prepared phosphonylated nitroxide, is described. The efficiency of these initiators toward the controlled radical polymerization of styrene and tert‐butyl acrylate is investigated in detail. Linear analogues of these multifunctional initiators were also prepared to compare and evaluate their initiation efficiency. The favorable conditions for polymerization were optimized by varying the concentration of initiators and free nitroxides, reaction conditions, etc., to obtain well‐defined star polymers. Star polystyrene thus obtained were further used as macro‐initiator for the block copolymerization with tert‐butyl acrylate. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Linear (co)polymers and dimethacrylate‐end‐linked polymer networks of methyl methacrylate with 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate, cleavable in the middle of the polymer chain, either under thermolysis or alkaline hydrolysis conditions, were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a specially designed bifunctional degradable initiator. This initiator was 2,6‐pyridinediethanol di(2‐bromo‐2‐methyl propanoate) (PyDEDBrMeP), bearing two 2‐(pyridin‐2‐yl)ethyl ester moieties, known for their thermal and hydrolytic (alkaline conditions) lability. As a control, a more stable bifunctional ATRP initiator, 2,6‐pyridinedimethanol di(2‐bromo‐2‐methyl propanoate) (PyDMDBrMeP), was also synthesized together with the corresponding linear polymers and polymer networks prepared from it. Thermal or hydrolytic treatment of the polymers prepared using PyDEDBrMeP led to a reduction in the molecular weights of the linear polymers by a factor of two, and to the conversion of the polymer networks to soluble branched (star) structures, consistent with the expected cleavage of the initiator residue located in the middle of the polymer chain. Thermal treatment of the polymers prepared using PyDMDBrMeP did not affect their molecular weight due to the thermal stability of the (pyridin‐2‐yl)methyl ester group, while treatment under alkaline hydrolysis conditions resulted in complete cleavage, similar to the PyDEDBrMeP‐prepared polymers. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 4‐Chloro‐3‐methyl phenyl methacrylate (CMPM) and 8‐quinolinyl methacrylate (8‐QMA) were synthesized through the reaction of 4‐chloro‐3‐methyl phenol and 8‐hydroxy quinoline, respectively, with methacryloyl chloride. The homopolymers and copolymers were prepared by free‐radical polymerization with azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator at 70 °C. Copolymers of CMPM and 8‐QMA of different compositions were prepared. The monomers were characterized with IR spectroscopy and 1H NMR techniques. The copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy. UV spectroscopy was used to obtain the compositions of the copolymers. The monomer reactivity ratios were calculated with the Fineman–Ross method. The molecular weights and polydispersity values of the copolymers were determined with gel permeation chromatography. The thermal stability of the polymers was evaluated with thermogravimetric analysis under a nitrogen atmosphere. The homopolymers and copolymers were tested for their antimicrobial activity againstbacteria, fungi, and yeast. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hyperbranched polymethacrylates were prepared by means of oxyanionic vinyl polymerization of commercially available monomers, including hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEG‐MA). Hyperbranched polymethacrylates with high molecular weight were obtained with the complex of potassium hydride and 18‐crown‐6 as the initiator. The effect of 18‐crown‐6 is very important, and only oligomer can be obtained in the polymerization without 18‐crown‐6. The molecular structure of the hyperbranched polymers was confirmed with 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. The ratio of initiator to monomer significantly affects the architecture of the resultant polymers. When the ratio of initiator to monomer equals 1 in the oxyanionic vinyl polymerization of HEMA, the degree of branching of the resulting polymer was calculated to be around 0.49. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fluorene end‐labeled polystyrene was prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization with 9‐bromofluorene as the initiator. Reactions were carried out in bulk or tetrahydrofuran solutions at temperatures of 80 °C or above. Analysis by gel permeation chromatography indicated that the polymers formed had low polydispersities with molecular weights consistently 2–5 times higher than calculated based on monomer‐to‐initiator ratios. Coupling of two fluorenyl radicals, formed by activation of the 9‐bromofluorene, was found to compete with initiation, leading to the higher‐than‐expected molecular weight values while giving rise to a fluorene dimer. UV–vis spectrometry indicated near‐quantitative fluorene labeling of the polystyrene. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 2657–2665, 2005  相似文献

A cyclic initiator for the nitroxide‐mediated controlled radical polymerization (NMP) is a powerful tool for the preparation of macrocyclic polymers via a ring‐expansion vinyl polymerization mechanism. For this purpose, we prepared a Hawker‐type NMP‐initiator that includes an azide and a terminal alkyne as an acyclic precursor, which is subsequently tethered via an intramolecular azide/alkyne‐“click”‐reaction, producing the final cyclic NMP‐initiator. The polymerization reactions of styrene with cyclic initiator were demonstrated and the resultant polymers were characterized by the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and the matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS). These results prove that the ring‐expansion polymerization of styrene occurred together with the radical ring‐crossover reactions originating from the exchange of the inherent nitroxides generating macrocyclic polystyrenes with higher expanded rings. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of a new compound, 2‐[(4‐bromomethyl)phenyl]‐4,5‐dihydro‐4,4‐dimethyloxazole ( 1 ), and its utility in the synthesis of oxazoline‐functionalized polystyrene by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) methods are described. Aromatic oxazolyl‐functionalized polymers were prepared by the ATRP of styrene, initiated by ( 1 ) in the presence of copper(I) bromide/2,2′‐bipyridyl catalyst system, to afford the corresponding α‐oxazolyl‐functionalized polystyrene ( 2 ). The polymerization proceeded via a controlled free radical polymerization process to produce the corresponding α‐oxazolyl‐functionalized polymers with predictable number‐average molecular weights, narrow molecular weight distributions in high‐initiator efficiency reactions. Post‐ATRP chain end modification of α‐oxazolyl‐functionalized polystyrene ( 2 ) to form the corresponding α‐carboxyl‐functionalized polystyrene ( 3 ) was achieved by successive acid‐catalyzed hydrolysis and saponification reactions. The polymerization processes were monitored by gas chromatography analyses. The unimolecular‐functionalized initiator and functionalized polymers were characterized by thin layer chromatography, spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and nonaqueous titration analysis. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new type of maleimide monomer, N‐(4‐acetylphenyl)maleimide (NAPMI), was synthesized. The oxime, carbazone, and thiosemicarbazone derivatives of NAPMI were prepared with hydroxylamine hydrochloride, semicarbazide hydrochloride, and thiosemicarbazide hydrochloride, respectively. Radical homopolymerization of NAPMI and its derivatives were prepared at 60 °C in dimethyl sulfoxide solution with azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The monomers and theirs homopolymers were characterized with Fourier transform infrared and NMR techniques. The glass‐transition temperatures, thermal stability, and ultraviolet stability of the polymers are compared. The activation energies of the thermal degradation of polymers were calculated by the Kissinger method. The antibacterial and antifungal effects of the monomers and polymers were also investigated on various bacteria and fungi. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semiconducting oligomers and polymers decorated with two or one dendronized tpy‐Ru(II)‐tpy metallocomplexes are presented. Initially, free terpyridine end‐functionalized semiconducting oligomers (distyrylanthracene, quinquephenylene, mono‐ and trifluorenes) were prepared while in a second approach, atom transfer radical polymerization was employed for the preparation of side‐chain oligomeric and polymeric (oxadiazole)s using a terpyridine initiator. These terpyridine‐bearing oligomers and polymers were complexated with a Percec‐type first‐generation (G1) dendronized terpyridine–Ru(III)Cl3 monocomplex, having two dodecyloxy groups. All oligomeric and polymeric metallocomplexes were characterized via NMR spectroscopies for their structural perfection and via UV‐Vis and PL spectroscopies for their optical properties. The existence of the organic semiconducting blocks in combination with the terpyridine–Ru(II)–terpyridine groups afforded hybrid metallo‐semiconducting species presenting the optical features of both their components. Moreover, their thin‐film morphologies were investigated through atomic force microscopy, revealing, in some cases, an organization tendency in the nanometer scale. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers of 6‐[4‐(4′‐methoxyphenyl)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersities were prepared via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with 2‐(2‐cyanopropyl) dithiobenzoate as the RAFT agent. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed that the polymers produced via the RAFT process had a narrower thermal stability range of the liquid‐crystalline mesophase than the polymers formed via conventional free‐radical polymerization. In addition, a chain length dependence of this stability range was found. The generated RAFT polymers displayed optical textures similar to those of polymers produced via conventional free‐radical polymerization. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multiarm star polymers containing thiol‐reactive maleimide groups at their core have been synthesized by utilization of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of various methacrylates using a masked maleimide containing multiarm initiator. One end of the initiator contains multiple halogen groups that produce the star architecture upon polymerization and the other end contains a masked maleimide functional group. Unmasking of the maleimide group after the polymerization provides the thiol reactive maleimide core that is widely used in bioconjugation. Functionalization of the core maleimide group with a thiol containing tripeptide was used to demonstrate facile reactivity of the core of these multiarm polymers under reagent‐free conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the first synthesis of poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) without solvent by free‐radical frontal polymerization (FP) at ambient pressure. In a typical run, the appropriate amounts of reactant (hydroxyethyl acrylate) and initiator (1,1‐di(tert‐butylperoxy)‐3,3,5‐trimethylcyclohexane) (Luperox 231) were mixed together at ambient pressure. FP was initiated by heating the wall of the tube with a soldering iron, and the resultant hot fronts were allowed to self‐propagate throughout the reaction vessel. Once initiated, no further energy was required for polymerization to occur. To study the macrokinetics, we also produced PHEA frontally with ammonium persulfate as initiator and dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent. The dependences of the front velocity and front temperature on the initiator concentration and reactant dilution were investigated. The front temperatures were between 124 and 157 °C, depending on the ammonium persulfate concentration. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that PHEA prepared by FP with ammonium persulfate as initiator had higher thermal stability than solvent‐free frontally prepared PHEA with Luperox 231 as initiator. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A core‐shell hybrid nanocomposites, possessing a hard core of nano titanium dioxide (n‐TiO2) and a soft shell of brushlike polystyrene (PS), were successfully prepared by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at 90 °C in anisole solution using CuBr/PMDETA as the catalyst, in the presence of sacrificial initiator. FTIR, 1H NMR, XPS, TEM, SEM, TGA, and DSC were used to determine the chemical structure, morphology, thermal properties, and the grafted PS quantities of the resulting products. TEM images of the samples provided direct evidence for the formation of a core‐shell structure. The thermal stabilities of the grafted polymers were dramatically elevated relative to that of pristine PS according to TGA results. DSC results demonstrated that the TiO2‐PS nanocomposites exhibited higher glass transition temperature (Tg) compared with pristine PS. The molecular weights of the free polymers formed by sacrificial initiator, which were similar to that of surface‐attached polymers were measured by GPC instrument which showed that the molecular weights of PS were well controlled with a relatively narrow polydispersity index (PDI < 1.2). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymers derived from bio‐acceptable poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(2‐methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA), and poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (PPEGMA) have been prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) utilizing an initiator prepared from a fluoroalkoxy‐terminated oligoethylene glycol. Polymerizations are controlled as seen by both linear first‐order kinetics and molecular weight evolution coupled with low polydispersities (<1.25) with respect to conversion. A range of ligands have been used depending upon the nature of the monomer: N‐(n‐propyl)‐2‐pyridyl‐methanimine with the methacrylates MMA and PEGMA and 1,1,4,7,10,10‐hexamethyltriethylene tetramine (HMTETA) with MEA. In all cases the use of the fluorinated initiator results in a lower apparent rate of propagation (kpapp) as compared with the more conventional and nonfluorinated initiator, ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate. The initiator generally also serves as an internal plasticizer lowering the glass transition temperature from the parent polymers. The surface characteristics of the fluoroinitiator containing polymers are altered compared with the nonfluorinated analogues. This is reflected in a significant increase in the advancing water contact angles of all fluoro‐containing polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The initiating behavior of the functional tosylates 1 – 4 and triflates 5 and 6 for the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of 2‐methyl‐1,3‐oxazoline was investigated. The emphasis was directed at tosylates and triflates with 2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐, 2,3‐epoxypropyl‐, 2,3‐didodecanoyl‐glycerol‐, and cholest‐5‐en‐moieties that allow the construction of amphiphilic polyoxazoline conjugates. The tosylates were prepared by a simple reaction of the corresponding alcohols with p‐toluenesulfonyl chloride, whereas the preparation of the corresponding triflates required low temperature and the use of 2,6‐di‐tert‐butylpyridine as a sterically hindered base. Among the initiators tested, 2,2‐dimethyl‐(4‐trifluoromethanesulfonyloxymethyl)‐1,3‐dioxolane 6 gave the best results in respect to molecular weight and polydispersity. Starting from the corresponding functional oxazoline polymers obtained with 6 as an initiator, amphiphilic lipid‐polyoxazoline conjugates with a diacylglycerol backbone could be prepared. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Porphyrin‐embedded high molecular weight dendronized polymers up to fourth generation have been synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation of Fréchet‐type dendritic dibromo macromonomers and porphyrin diboronic pinacol ester. Higher generation lateral dendritic wedges not only endow the dendronized polymers with good solubility in commonly used organic solvents, but also prevent planar porphyrins and conjugated polymer backbones from aggregating by their “site isolation” effect. This type of porphyrin‐embedded dendronized polymers can be used as saturated red light‐emitting materials. With the increase of the generation of the lateral dendrons, the quantum yields of the dendronized polymers also gradually increased. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene core nanosphere particles possessing 2‐methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymers on the corona were prepared by the free radical polymerization of hydrophilic polyMPC macromonomer and hydrophobic styrene with AIBN as a radical initiator in ethanol as a polar solvent. The morphology of the nanospheres was observed by transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The nanospheres were spherical in form and have a narrow size distribution. Their sizes could be controlled by varying the molecular weight of the macromonomer and the amount of it in feed. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) of the nanosphere surfaces suggested that polyMPC chains were located favorably on the surface of the nanosphere. The nanospheres having the polyMPC chains on their surfaces can be significant and useful materials in technological and medical fields. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 4‐Arm star side‐chain liquid crystalline (LC) polymers containing azobenzene with different terminal substituents were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Tetrafunctional initiator prepared by the esterification between pentaerythritol and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide was utilized to initiate the polymerization of 6‐[4‐(4‐methoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate (MMAzo) and 6‐[4‐(4‐ethoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate (EMAzo), respectively. The 4‐arm star side‐chain LC polymer with p‐methoxyazobenzene moieties exhibits a smectic and a nematic phase, while that with p‐ethoxyazobenzene moieties shows only a nematic phase, which derives of different terminal substituents. The star polymers have similar LC behavior to the corresponding linear homopolymers, whereas transition temperatures decrease slightly. Both star polymers show photoresponsive isomerization under the irradiation with UV–vis light. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 3342–3348, 2007  相似文献
