Easy and direct : Regioselective Mizoroki–Heck‐coupling reactions using heteroaromatic tosylates as electrophiles were achieved, thus providing direct and easy access to highly functionalized α‐heteroarylvinyl amides and ethers.

Positive discrimination : Chemo‐ and regioselective palladium‐catalyzed cycloetherification of allendiols, namely β,γ‐ and γ,δ‐allendiols, may occur by judicious choice of palladium‐catalyzed conditions owing to their potential ability to discriminate between both nucleophilic sites (see scheme).

Secondary, but second to none : The use of secondary alkyl halides in transition‐metal‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions (see scheme) has advanced significantly over the last five years. Selected examples of these transformations are examined, including mechanistic and stereochemical aspects.

Guest Effect : The differences of nitrogen atom positions and the bridge bonds linked to two pyridine rings of some bipyridine guests can significantly affect the binding abilities and inclusion geometries of β‐cyclodextrin with the guests in both the solution and solid states.

Round and round : Covalently bound spokes induce an efficient template‐directed cyclization towards a rigid molecular wheel (see figure) and afford dramatically increased shape‐persistence properties compared with non‐strutted macrocycles.

Like pearls on a string , molecular building blocks have been preorganized and then interlinked on a surface (see STM images). In this way both the supramolecular self‐assembly of the reactants as well as the subsequent thermal activation to release the protecting group are controlled.

Trapped! Mesopolymer‐entrapped Pt nanoparticles serve as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogenation of benzaldehydes in water at ambient temperature. In comparison with the commercial Pt/alumina catalyst, the Pt/FDU‐14 catalyst shows superior performance in the hydrogenation reaction. The catalyst afforded high turnover frequencies and was reusable more than nine times without loss of activity or selectivity.

A pyrazole derivative , considered as the stable five‐membered cyclic allene 1 a by Dyker, Bertrand, et al., is reinterpreted to be a zwitterion 1 b . It is shown that the bonding characteristics typical for an allene are not possible for structure 1 a . Ar=2,6‐dimethylphenyl.

X‐ray vision : Single‐crystal XRD experiments (see picture) reveal the excited‐state structure of the photomagnetic heterobimetallic title complex. The system shows a decrease in all the iron–ligand bond lengths, suggesting that photoexcitation involves a ligand‐to‐metal charge transfer or a change in the superexchange coupling between the metal centers.

Growing in line: The surface chemistry of self‐assembled nanostructured block copolymers is used to control the sites at which semiconducting metal sulfide nanocrystals nucleate and grow on a surface directly from aqueous solutions. This process is a new and general strategy for the bottom‐up assembly of functional nanocrystalline materials for a variety of applications.

Two‐step magnetic transitions : An azide‐bridged 1D MnIII coordination polymer with a unique single end‐on mode was prepared; it displayed atypical antiferromagnetic couplings and field‐induced two‐step magnetic transitions (see figure). The spin‐canted phenomenon in the antiferromagnetic chain complex plays a pivotal role in establishing the slow magnetic relaxation.

Lithium makes the difference : A simple strategy for the synthesis of lithium‐doped porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is developed (see structure; C black, O red, AlO6 blue octahedra), thus paving the way for the facile preparation of lithium‐doped MOFs. Moreover, the significant increase in hydrogen adsorption predicted by theoretical calculations is observed.
