Prints are the most popular artistic technique. Due to their manufacturing procedure, they are also one of the most frequently falsified types of artwork. In terms of their economic and historic value, the chemical analysis and characterisation of coloured inks and their principal constituent materials (pigments), together with the historical and aesthetic information available in the Catalogues Raisonées, are important tools in distinguishing originals from non-original prints. The chemical characterisation and discrimination of coloured inks has test in this study. Analysis using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been done on blue pigments and inks, due to this colour is one of the most representative for the presence of organic and inorganic materials in their composition. Conclusion obtained for this colour would demonstrate the capability of the approach when it is applied to any other coloured set of inks.  相似文献

This article aims to provide the basic information necessary to afford the discrimination of artistic prints based on chemical information. The presence of original and non-original prints in the art market is a real problem, especially for contemporary artists. Most of the non-original elements can be distinguished on the basis of their stylistics and printing characteristics, but sometimes this information is not enough. To facilitate discrimination in these cases, we propose to add, to the previously indicated aspects, the chemical information of the materials involved in the production of the original series (inks, paper and pencil). Comparison of the composition of any element with that established for the original series will permit the attribution of any doubtful element. This article is focused on the evaluation of this approach by determining the chemical composition of contemporary black printing inks by infrared spectroscopy and by searching, on the basis of the information obtained, for criteria capable to discriminate between prints made of different inks. The success of the approach with this set of inks could easily be extended to the study of colour inks. The study also includes the characterization and discrimination of black pigments because they are the most characteristic component of these inks and because this information can also be useful for other artistic studies. The procedure proposed permits the analysis of inks with minimum deterioration of the artwork. Results indicate the capability of the approach because, following the procedure, it is possible to distinguish between black pigments attending to the presence of hydroxyapatite, silicate and some other specific bands, whereas black inks can be discriminated by paying attention to the inclusion in their composition of such pigments as bone black, Prussian blue, mars brown or other specific bands. Scanning electron microscopy analyses have corroborated the results obtained.  相似文献

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was applied to the characterization of red inks used to print one-penny stamps in Britain during the period 1841-1880.Micro- and macro-accessories were compared in both transmission and reflection mode. The best spectra were obtained using a microscope with a diamond cell coupled to an infrared spectrometer. In this case, the extraction of a single paper fibre was enough to obtain a good spectrum. Calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, lead chromate, cyano compounds, cellulose, and oil were identified. When bigger surfaces need to be analyzed, diffuse reflection or variable specular reflectance accessories can be used. Nevertheless, only cyano compounds and calcium carbonate can be characterized. Results are in agreement with those obtained using scanning electron microscopy. The chronological order of the 71 stamps studied showed that the chemical composition of the red ink changed during the period studied.  相似文献

Different methods to create chemically patterned, flat PDMS stamps with two different chemical functionalities were compared. The best method for making such stamps, functionalized with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFDTS) and 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTS), appeared to be full functionalization of a freshly oxidized flat PDMS stamp with either adsorbate, followed by renewed oxidation through a mask and attachment of the other adsorbate. These stamps were used to transfer polar inks (a thioether-functionalized dendrimer and a fluorescent dye) by microcontact printing. The PFDTS monolayer was used as a barrier against ink transfer, while the APTS SAM areas functioned as an ink reservoir for polar inks. The printing results confirmed the excellent transfer of hydrophilic inks with these stamps to gold and glass substrates, even from aqueous solutions. Attachment of a fluorescent dye on the amino-functionalized regions shows the possibility of the further modification of the chemically patterned stamps for tailoring of the stamps' properties.  相似文献

Good jetting performance and pigment‐dispersing stability are necessary for pigment‐based ink‐jet inks. This study investigates how the chemical structures of the polymeric dispersants affect the pigment‐dispersing stability and jetting performance of ink‐jet inks. A series of polymeric dispersants containing styrene (hydrophobic unit) and acrylic acid (hydrophilic unit) with different ratios have been synthesized and used to disperse different pigments. Because 3000–12,000 ink drops can be expelled from the nozzle of a thermal bubble‐type ink‐jet printer within 1 s, the jetting behavior is related to the rheology variation of a dilute solution under a high shear. An in situ drop formation system has been used to study the high‐shear‐rate rheology (dynamic surface tension and dynamic viscosity) of a solution with a viscosity lower than 3 cps, which no commercial rheometer can measure. Excellent ink‐jet inks can only be produced by the combination of pigments, dispersants, and surfactants with appropriate hydrophilicity. Moreover, the correlation of the pigment surface properties, the chemical structures of the polymeric dispersants, and ink formulation is discussed. The effects of the surfactants and firing conditions on the jetting behavior of the ink‐jet ink are also examined. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the last 10 years researchers have adapted a number of instrumental techniques for studying various aspects of historical inks that have been used in historical documents. In this paper, the applications of atomic spectroscopy such as GFAAS, ICP-MS, XRF, PIXE, and XANES are described for identifying and quantifying metals that are found in historical inks. Applications of vibrational spectroscopy, primarily Raman and near/mid-IR spectroscopy, are described for detecting organic and inorganic compounds in ink and paper.

During conservation of the painted ceiling decoration of Lin’xi Pavilion in the Forbidden City, two distinct paint campaigns were isolated as a unique case study into architectural paint materials during both the Ming and Qing dynasties. Paint samples and cross sections from both paint generations were analyzed with SEM-EDX, time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), XRD, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopies. Similar organic and inorganic materials characteristic of these time periods were identified. The pigments of interest found in both paint generations were botallackite and atacamite polymorphs. This suggests a shift from natural mineral sources to synthetic copper-based pigments for these larger architectural projects.  相似文献

Microcontact printing is a heavily used surface modification method in materials and life science applications. This concept article focuses on the development of versatile stamps for microcontact printing that can be used to bind and release inks through molecular recognition or through an ink reservoir, the latter being used for the transfer of heavy inks, such as biomolecules and particles. Conceptually, such stamp properties can be introduced at the stamp surface or by changing the bulk stamp material; both lines of research will be reviewed here. Examples include supramolecular stamps with affinity properties, polymer‐layer‐grafted PDMS stamps, and porous multilayer‐grafted PDMS stamps for the first case, and hydrogel stamps and porous stamps made by phase‐separation micromolding for the second. Potential directions for future advancement of this field are also discussed.  相似文献

The blackberry’s color is composed mainly of natural dyes called anthocyanins. Their color is red–purple, and they can be used as a natural colorant. Anthocyanins are flavonoids, which are products of plants, and their colors range from orange and red to various shades of blue, purple and green, according to pH. In this study, the chemical composition of an extract obtained from blackberries was defined by LC-ESI/LTQOrbitrap/MS in positive and negative ionization mode. Furthermore, we investigated the adsorption process of blackberry extract using several inorganic fillers, such as metakaolin, silica, Lipari pumice, white pozzolan and alumina. The pigments exhibit different colors as a function of their interactions with the fillers. The analysis of the absorption data allowed the estimation of the maximum adsorbing capacity of each individual filler tested. Through thermogravimetric measurements (TGA), the thermal stability and the real adsorption of the organic extract were determined.  相似文献

Chemical modification of the surface of a stamp used for microcontact printing (microCP) is interesting for controling the surface properties, such as the hydrophilicity. To print polar inks, plasma polymerization of allylamine (PPAA) was employed to render the surface of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), polyolefin plastomers (POP), and Kraton elatomeric stamps hydrophilic for long periods of time. A thin PPAA film of about 5 nm was deposited on the stamps, which increased the hydrophilicity, and which remained stable for at least several months. These surface-modified stamps were used to transfer polar inks by microCP. The employed microCP schemes are as follows: (a) a second generation of dendritic ink having eight dialkyl sulfide end groups to fabricate patterns on gold substrates by positive microCP, (b) fluorescent guest molecules on beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) printboards on glass employing host-guest recognition, and (c) Lucifer Yellow ethylenediamine resulting in covalent patterning on an aldehyde-terminated glass surface. All experiments resulted in an excellent performance of all three PPAA-coated stamp materials to transfer the polar inks from the stamp surface to gold and glass substrates by microCP, even from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

This work comprises the use of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) techniques for the study of the composition of twentieth century traditional Japanese color sticks. By using the combination of analytical techniques it was possible to obtain information on inorganic and organic pigments, binders and fillers present in the sticks. The colorant materials identified in the sticks were zinc and titanium white, chrome yellow, yellow and red ochre, vermillion, alizarin, indigo, Prussian and synthetic ultramarine blue. The results also showed that calcite and barite were used as inorganic mineral fillers while Arabic gum was the medium used. EDXRF offered great potential for such investigations since it allowed the identification of the elements present in the sample preserving its integrity. However, this information alone was not enough to clearly identify some of the materials in study and therefore it was necessary to use XRD and FTIR techniques.  相似文献

To screen for organic pigments, like fringelites or porphyrins, in sediments and fossil specimen, a simple diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopic determination was developed. In contrast to common inorganic pigments, like Fe2O3, these pigments exhibit well-structured characteristic absorption peaks which allow their recognition. This method was then used to identify fringelite H in a non-crinoidSolenopora species from the Jurassic. Reflectance FTIR spectroscopy proved not to be useful for this purpose.  相似文献

A series of paint cross sections from an oil painting are studied by attenuated total reflection in conjunction with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). The imaging modes of both methods were employed to show their potential in the detection of various painting materials and their distribution in the paint cross sections. The goal of this work is to evaluate FTIR and SEM-EDX spectroscopy in order to understand the limitations and strengths of both approaches. It has been revealed that both techniques are complementary in the identification of pigments, extenders and binding media used by an artist. FTIR spectroscopy is also a powerful tool in the studies on degradation products that are formed due to ageing or deterioration of works of art. We attempted to identify such secondary products present in the paint cross section. Cadmium oxalate and a high concentration of zinc palmitate/stearate were detected for the first time with the use of ATR-FTIR imaging technique. These results can complement studies on the conservation issue and provide an insight into understanding the mechanisms of chemical processes that appear in art works.  相似文献

A moderately hydrophilic, thermoplastic elastomer (poly(ether-ester)) was investigated as a stamp material for microcontact printing of a polar ink: pentaerythritol-tetrakis-(3-mercaptopropionate). Stamps with a relief structure were produced from this polymer by hot embossing, and a comparison was made with conventional poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and oxygen-plasma-treated PDMS. It is shown that the hydrophilic stamps can be used for the repetitive printing (without re-inking) of at least 10 consecutive patterns, which preserve their etch resistance, and this in rather sharp contrast to conventional and oxygen plasma-treated PDMS stamps. It is argued that these enhanced printing characteristics of the hydrophilic stamps originate from an improved wetting and solubility of polar inks in the hydrophilic stamp.  相似文献

Composition of the prehistoric pigments’ (from Carriqueo rock shelter, Rio Negro province, Argentina) has been analysed by means of molecular spectroscopy (Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and micro-Raman) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled to an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). Red and yellow pigments were recognized as red and yellow ochre. The matrix of the pigments is composed of one or more substances. According to the matrix composition yellow and red pigments were also divided into two groups—i.e. those containing kaolinite or sulphates. Green pigment was detected as green earth, made up of celadonite as a chromophore.  相似文献
