Free volume properties of a series of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) membranes, which were produced by various nonisothermal crystallization processes (rapid‐, step‐, and slow‐cooling processes), were investigated using positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectroscopy over a temperature range of 25–90 °C. From the annihilation lifetime parameters, the temperature dependence of free volume size, amount, size distribution, and fractional free volume and thermal expansion properties of free volume were discussed. A model which assumed that amorphous phase was subdivided into mobile and rigid amorphous fractions (MAF and RAF) in the semicrystalline polymer was considered to interpret the temperature dependence of those free volume properties. Morphological observation of the semicrystalline polymer by small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) indicated that the rapid‐cooled (cold‐crystallized) membranes showed a much thinner thickness of the repeating lamellar/amorphous layers and most likely higher amount of RAF, which restrained the chain motion, than the step‐ and slow‐cooled (melt‐crystallized) membranes. The difference of free volume properties among various PHBV membranes was created according to the crystalline structure of the polymer from different thermal history. The polymer crystallized with slower cooling rate induced higher crystallinity and resulted in less free volume amount and lower fractional free volume. In addition, the thermal expansion coefficients of free volume size were affected by the crystallization rate of PHBV polymer. Larger distribution of the free volume size of melt‐crystallized membranes was observed as a result of the bimodal distribution of the lamellar periodicity and less amount of RAF than that of the cold‐crystallized membranes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The objective of this work was to use both X‐ray and differential scanning calorimetry techniques in a comparative study of the lamellar and crystalline structures of heterogeneous and homogeneous ethylene‐α‐copolymers. The samples differed in the comonomer type (1‐butene, 1‐hexene, 1‐octene, and hexadecene), comonomer content, and catalyst used in the polymerizations. Step crystallizations were performed with differential scanning calorimetry, and the crystallinity and lamellar thicknesses of the different crystal populations were determined. Wide‐angle X‐ray scattering was used to determine crystallinities, average sizes of the crystallites, and dimensions of the orthorhombic unit cell. The average thickness, separation of the lamellae, and volume fractions of the crystalline phase were determined by small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). The results revealed that at densities below 900 kg/m3, polymers were organized as poorly organized crystal bundles. The lamellar distances were smaller and the lamellar thickness distributions were narrower for the homogeneous ethylene copolymers than for the heterogeneous ones. Step‐crystallization experiments by SAXS demonstrated that the long period increased after annealing. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 1860–1875, 2001  相似文献

Seven different fluoropolymer films were used as matrix materials for radiation‐grafted ion‐exchange membranes. The crystallinity and preferred orientation of these membranes were studied with wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, and the lamellar structure of the membranes was examined with small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The crystallinity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)‐based matrix materials varied between 57 and 40%, and the crystallinity of the sulfonated samples varied between 34 and 23%. The lamellar periods of PVDF‐based matrix materials were about 115 Å, and the lamellar periods of poly(ethylene‐alt‐tetrafluoroethylene) and poly(tetrafluoroethylene‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) were 250 and 212 Å, respectively. When the samples were grafted, the lamellar periods increased. Correlation function analysis showed very clearly that the long‐range order decreased because of grafting and sulfonation processes. For those samples that showed good proton conductivity, the lamellar period also increased because of sulfonation. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We examine the crystallization and chain conformation behavior of semicrystalline poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and amorphous poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) mixtures with wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), and small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments. For blends with PEO weight fractions (wtPEO) greater than or equal to 0.3, below the melting point of PEO, the WAXD patterns reveal that crystalline PEO belongs to the monoclinic system. The unit‐cell parameters are independent of wtPEO. However, the bulk crystallinity determined from WAXD decreases as wtPEO decreases. The scattered intensities from SAXS experiments show that the systems form an ordered crystalline/amorphous lamellar structure. In a combination of WAXD and SAXS analysis, the related morphological parameters are assigned correctly. With the addition of amorphous PVAc, both the average amorphous layer thickness and long spacing increase, whereas the average crystalline layer thickness decreases. We find that a two‐phase analysis of the correlation function from SAXS, in which the scattering invariant is linearly proportional to the volume fraction of lamellar stacks, describes quantitatively the crystallization behavior of PEO in the presence of PVAc. When wtPEO is close to 1, the samples are fully spaced‐filled with lamellar stacks. As wtPEO decreases from 1.0 to 0.3, more PVAc chains are excluded from the interlamellar region into the interfibrillar region. The fraction outside the lamellar stacks, which is completely occupied with PVAc chains, increases from 0 to 58%. Because the radius of gyration of PVAc with a random‐coil configuration determined from SANS is smaller than the average amorphous layer thickness from SAXS, we believe that the amorphous PVAc chains still persist with a random‐coil configuration even when the blends form an ordered structure. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The isothermal crystallization and subsequent melting process in semicrystalline poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene) were investigated via temperature‐dependent small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering and Flash DSC techniques. In a phase diagram of inversed crystalline lamellar thickness and temperature, the crystallization and melting lines can be described by two linear dependencies of different slopes and different limiting temperatures at infinite lamellar thickness. Upon subsequent heating, recrystallization lines with different slopes were observed for samples with different lamellar thickness, indicating changes in surface free energy difference between stabilized crystallites and mesomorphic phase. The surface free energy of native crystallites with extended‐chain conformation decreased with increasing lamellar thickness due to a more ordered surface region and less chain ends which changes cooperatively with mesomorphic phase. The surface free energy of stabilized crystallites remained unchanged for all lamellar thickness. Therefore, the recrystallization lines with different slopes are consequences of changes in surface free energy of mesomorphic phase. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Poly(lactic acid) films consisting of α′‐forms were prepared and uniaxially drawn. The effects of the draw rate at temperatures above the glass transition temperature on chain conformation, degree of crystallinity, and crystalline phase transformation were investigated by a combination of vibrational spectroscopy (infrared and Raman), differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). It was established that the α′‐crystal's phase of poly(lactic acid) films does not transform into either an α or β crystals on uniaxial drawing at a fixed draw ratio of 4. However, the degree of crystallinity was significantly increased on deformation. The structural change as a function of deformation also promotes an increase in the strain‐induced enthalpic relaxation endothermic peak appearing near the glass transition region. While the overall changes in physical properties can be attributed to the changes in the degree of crystallinity as a function of strain rate, polarized Raman spectra, and WAXD clearly illustrated changes and the differences in the amorphous and crystalline orientation as a function of processing conditions. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A simultaneous wide‐angle and small‐angle X‐ray scattering study of two poly(ethylene naphthalene 2,6‐dicarboxylate) samples crystallized from the glassy state at different annealing temperatures for different annealing times was carried out with synchrotron radiation. Either single or dual melting was induced in the samples, as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The correlation function and interface distribution function were calculated to evaluate microstructural parameters such as the long spacing, the thickness of the amorphous and crystalline phases, and the width of the size distributions. The sample with dual melting behavior exhibited an abrupt increase of all microstructural parameters at temperatures above the melting of the lowest endotherm, whereas the sample revealing a single melting endotherm did not show such a sudden change. This finding agrees with the concept that the appearance of two melting peaks in DSC traces can be explained by the dual lamellar stacking model. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effects of crystallinity and temperature on enzymatic degradation of poly‐ε‐caprolactone (PCL) films and structural changes after degradation have been studied using weight loss, differential scanning calorimetry, and optical microscopy. The weight loss during the enzymatic degradation of PCL suggested that the extent of biodegradation and the rate of degradation strongly depend on the initial crystallinity. PCL films of lower crystallinity (24%) degraded much faster than films of higher crystallinity (45%). The crystallinity of low‐crystalline PCL films increased with increasing degradation time, whereas the crystallinity of high‐crystalline PCL films decreased with time. The spherulite size increased with increasing degradation time for low‐crystalline samples but decreased with time for high‐crystalline samples. These results revealed that degradation occurs first in the amorphous region where the degradation rate is much higher, and the crystalline region of the PCL film started to degrade simultaneously for those PCL with higher crystallinity. The enzymatic degradation of PCL proceeded from the free amorphous to restricted amorphous followed by lamellar edges, where PCL chains have higher mobility irrespective of hydrolysis temperature. Caproic acid was identified as the primary product formed after degradation and confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, suggesting that degradation occurs through the depolymerization mechanism. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase structure of crystalline isotactic polystyrene (iPS) has been investigated with temperature‐modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Quenched amorphous samples have been cold‐crystallized at 140 or 170 °C for various crystallization times. The degree of crystallinity obtained from WAXS, with the ratio of the crystal peak intensity to the total peak intensity, shows excellent agreement with the crystallinity determined from TMDSC total heat flow endotherms. For the first time, FTIR results show that the absorbance peak ratio (I/I) has a linear correlation with the crystalline mass fraction (χc) for cold‐crystallized iPS according to the following relation: I/I = 0.54χc + 0.16. This relationship allows the crystallinity of iPS to be determined from infrared spectroscopy analyses in cases in which it is difficult to perform thermal or X‐ray measurements. On the basis of the measurements of the heat capacity increment at the glass transition, we find that a significant amount of the rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) coexists with the crystalline and mobile amorphous phases in cold‐crystallized iPS. The RAF increases systematically with the crystallization time, and a greater amount is formed at a lower crystallization temperature. A three‐phase model (crystalline phase, mobile amorphous phase, and rigid amorphous phase) is, therefore, appropriate for the interpretation of the structure of cold‐crystallized iPS. The origin of the low‐temperature endothermic peak (annealing peak) has been investigated with TMDSC and FTIR spectroscopy and has been shown to be due to irreversible relaxation of the RAF. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of uniaxial deformation and subsequent relaxation at ambient temperature on irreversible and reversible crystallization of homogeneous poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) with 38 mol % 1‐octene melt‐crystallized at 10 K min was explored by calorimetry, X‐ray scattering, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. At 298 K, the enthalpy‐based crystallinity of annealed specimens increased irreversibly by stress‐induced crystallization from initially 15% to a maximum of, at least, 19% when a permanent set of more than 200% was attained. The crystallinity increased by formation of crystals of pseudohexagonal structure at the expense of the amorphous polymer, and as a result of destruction of orthorhombic crystals. The stress‐induced increase of crystallinity was accompanied by an increase in the apparent specific heat capacity from 2.44 to about 2.59 J g?1 K?1, which corresponds to an increase of the total reversibility of crystallization from, at least, 0.10 to 0.17% K?1. The specific reversibility calculated for 100% crystallinity increased from 0.67 to 0.89% K?1 and points to a changed local equilibrium at the interface between the crystal and amorphous phases. The deformation resulted in typical changes of the phase structure and crystal morphology that involve orientation and destruction of crystals as well as the formation of fibrils. The effect of the decrease of the entropy of the strained melt on the reversibility of crystallization and melting is discussed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The lamellar‐level morphology of an extruded poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/poly(ethylene‐2,6‐naphthalate) (PEN) blend was investigated with small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). Measurements were made as a function of the annealing time in the melt and the crystallization temperature. The characteristic morphological parameters at the lamellar level were determined by correlation function analysis of the SAXS data. At a low crystallization temperature of 120 °C, the increased amorphous layer thickness was identified in the blend, indicating that some PEN was incorporated into the interlamellar regions of PET during crystallization. The blend also showed a larger lamellar thickness than pure PET. A reason for the increase in the lamellar thickness might be that the formation of thinner lamellar stacks by secondary crystallization was significantly restricted because of the increased glass‐transition temperature. At high crystallization temperatures above 200 °C, the diffusion rates of noncrystallizable components were faster than the growth rates of crystals, with most of the noncrystallizable components escaping from the lamellar stacks. As a result, the blend showed an interfibrillar or interspherulitic morphology. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 317–324, 2002  相似文献

We have investigated the morphology and packing manner of graft copolymers consisting of rigid‐rod‐like poly(γ‐benzyl L ‐glutamate) (PBLG) main chains and grafted diblock copolymers of amorphous poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) and crystalline poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The results of differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering measurements for graft copolymers with higher side‐chain volume fractions suggest that the rodlike main chains and crystallized PEG chains exist in segregated domains. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering profiles for these samples show diffraction intensity maxima accompanied by higher order peaks, the positions of which suggest the formation of an ordered layered structure. From these observations, the graft copolymers are estimated to form repeated layered structure consisting of segregated PBLG, PPG, and PEG layers. A proposed model for molecular packing of the graft copolymers is consistent with the experimental observation that the repeating distance for the layered structure decreases with an increase in the volume fraction of side chains. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallinity of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), when deformed with plastic plane‐strain compression, was studied with wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. A comparison of the obtained crystallinity data with annealed iPP samples was performed. The material used in this study was commercial iPP (weight‐average molecular weight = 117.400 g/mol; number‐average molecular weight = 17.300 g/mol). A significant decrease in the crystallinity was observed with increasing deformation pressure when the X‐ray method was employed, whereas only a small decrease was registered when the DSC method of crystallinity determination was used. However, the annealed iPP samples demonstrated a slight crystallinity increase when evaluated by both techniques. The reason for the difference between WAXS and DSC crystallinity results is discussed. This study of iPP specimens subjected to large deformation led us to the conclusion that the WAXS method provides accurate crystallinity values for the deformed material, whereas the values obtained by the DSC method do not reproduce the real crystallinity of the deformed material. This is due to the inherent heating process of the method, which causes a relaxation process and a significant change in the crystallinity of the deformed material, providing values nearer to its intrinsic equilibrium state. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Grazing‐incidence X‐ray scattering (GIXS) is widely used to analyze the crystallinity and nanoscale structure in thin polymer films. However, ionizing radiation will generate free radicals that initiate crosslinking and/or chain scission, and structural damage will impact the ordering kinetics, thermodynamics, and crystallinity in many polymers. We report a simple methodology to screen for beam damage that is based on lithographic principles: films are exposed to patterns of X‐ray radiation, and changes in polymer structure are revealed by immersing the film in a solvent that dissolves the shortest chains. The experiments are implemented with high throughput using the standard beam line instrumentation and a typical GIXS configuration. The extent of damage (at a fixed radiation dose) depends on a range of intrinsic material properties and experimental variables, including the polymer chemistry and molecular weight, exposure environment, film thickness, and angle of incidence. The solubility switch for common polymers is detected within 10–60 s at ambient temperature, and we verified that this first indication of damage corresponds with the onset of network formation in glassy polystyrene and a loss of crystallinity in polyalkylthiophenes. Therefore, grazing‐incidence X‐ray “patterning” offers an efficient approach to determine the appropriate data acquisition times for any GIXS experiment. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) films with oriented lamellar structure were deformed in tensile experiments and investigated in situ using small angle X‐ray scattering. The tensile direction was set parallel, normal and in an angle of 45° relative to the surface normal of the lamellae. Data were interpreted in terms of two‐dimensional autocorrelation functions. The deformation of lattice spacing and lamellar orientation can largely be explained by affine transformations. The sample, where the lamellar surface normal was normal to tensile direction, developed a chequerboard type arrangement of crystalline parts. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The morphologies of a series of blown films and machine‐direction‐oriented (MDO) films, all produced from high density polyethylene, were characterized. In the blown film process, the crystalline morphology develops while the melt is under extensional stress. In the MDO process, drawing takes place in the solid state and deforms the crystalline morphology of the starting film. The films were characterized by wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and atomic force microscopy to determine the lamellar morphology. The effect of the type of deformation on the lamellar morphology was studied and relationships were developed between the lamellar and polymer chain morphology using SAXS and WAXS. Blown and MDO films were found to have very different morphologies. However, an integrated mechanism was developed linking the sequential events in the deformation and morphology development in blown and MDO films. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A structural comparison of three different crystalline forms of poly(β‐propiolactone) (PPL) was carried out by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The α‐form in a hot‐drawn and annealed film represents a 21 helix conformation. The β‐form in a cold‐drawn and annealed film represents a planar zigzag conformation. The γ‐form in an oriented sedimented mat of solution‐grown chain‐folded lamellar crystals also implies a planar zigzag conformation. The solution‐cast film depicts similar outlines with the γ‐form in lamellar crystals in all the experimental measurements, suggesting that the molecular chain in the solution‐cast film has a planar zigzag conformation. While elongation at break decreased, tensile strength and Young's modulus increased with an increase in the crystallinity, independent of the crystalline forms. The influence of the enzymatic degradation of these crystal structures has been investigated by using an extracellular PHB depolymerase purified from Ralstonia pickettii T1. The rate of degradation was in the order of β‐form > α‐form > solution‐cast (γ‐form) film, and the different surface morphologies after partial enzymatic degradation were observed in scanning electron micrographs. It is suggested that the crystal structure is one of the important factors for determining the rate of degradation together with crystallinity.

The crystallization behavior of isotactic propylene‐1‐hexene (PH) random copolymer having 5.7% mole fraction of hexene content was investigated using simultaneous time‐resolved small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques. For this copolymer, the hexene component cannot be incorporated into the unit cell structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). Only α‐phase crystal form of iPP was observed when samples were melt crystallized at temperatures of 40 °C, 60 °C, 80 °C, and 100 °C. Comprehensive analysis of SAXS and WAXD profiles indicated that the crystalline morphology is correlated with crystallization temperature. At high temperatures (e.g., 100 °C) the dominant morphology is the lamellar structure; while at low temperatures (e.g., 40 °C) only highly disordered small crystal blocks can be formed. These morphologies are kinetically controlled. Under a small degree of supercooling (the corresponding iPP crystallization rate is slow), a segmental segregation between iPP and hexene components probably takes place, leading to the formation of iPP lamellar crystals with a higher degree of order. In contrast, under a large degree of supercooling (the corresponding iPP crystallization rate is fast), defective small crystal blocks are favored due to the large thermodynamic driving force and low chain mobility. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The multiple melting behavior of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated by real‐time small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) measurements coupling with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Semicrystalline specimens prepared by a continuous cooling process showed lengthening of the Bragg period during the progress of double melting. A model of variable thickness of lamella was proposed to fit to the SAXS patterns and revealed that both the crystalline lamella and the amorphous layer contributed to the increase in Bragg period while the later dominated the contribution. The model of variable thickness although satisfied the SAXS data was unable to compromise the data from other probing tools. A modification of the model proposed that each lamella piling up to construct the stacks in the crystallites was itself nonuniform in thickness. The modification with the parallel occurrence of the mechanism of surface melting and crystallization successfully compromised the observations from SAXS, DSC, and optical microscopy and provided a new perspective for the explanation to lengthening of the Bragg period related to multiple melting behavior. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystalline structure of polyamide‐12 (PA12) was studied by solid‐state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as well as by synchrotron wide‐ and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS). Isotropic and oriented PA12 showed different NMR spectra ascribed to γ‐ and γ′‐crystalline modifications, respectively. On the basis of the position of the first diffraction peak, the isotropic γ‐form and the oriented γ′‐form were shown to be with hexagonal crystalline lattice at room temperature. When heated, the two PA12 polymorphs demonstrated different behaviors. Above 140 °C, the isotropic γ‐PA12 partially transformed into α‐modification. No such transition was observed with the oriented γ′‐PA12 phase even after annealing at temperatures close to melting. A γ′–γ transition was observed here only after isotropization by melting point. Various structural parameters were extracted from the WAXS and SAXS patterns and analyzed as a function of temperature and orientation: the degree of crystallinity, the d‐spacings, the Bragg's long spacings, the average thicknesses of the crystalline (lc) and amorphous (la) phases, and the linear crystallinity xcl within the lamellar stacks. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
