Two new oligomeric sulfone and sulfone‐ketone containing phthalonitrile (PN) resins with excellent processability have been developed. The PN monomers were prepared from the reaction of an excess amount of bisphenol S with 4‐(chlorophenyl)sulfone or 4,4‐dichlorobenzophenone in the presence of a base in a solvent mixture (dimethylsulfoxide/toluene), followed by end‐capping with 4‐nitro‐PN in a two‐step, one‐pot reaction. These PN resins exhibited good viscosities and cure times for molding into various shapes. After being thermally cured to yield crosslinked polymers, these polymers demonstrated superb mechanical properties, thermo‐oxidative stability, and maintained good dielectric properties. Some new amino‐ and imide‐containing phthalonitrile compounds with 1:1 molar ratio of amino group to pthalonitrile unit were successfully synthesized. The molecular structures were characterized by spectroscopic techniques. They were thermally polymerized under nitrogen/air, even in the absence of curing additives. The thermal properties of the cured products were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The 5% weight loss temperatures ranged from 525 to 528 °C and 513 to 520 °C under nitrogen and air, respectively. Char yields (900 °C) were in the range of 62–70%. Rheometric measurements showed that the rate of the cure reaction differs for all the three monomers. The glass transition temperature advances with increasing extent of cure and disappears on postcure at 375 °C. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

In this work, preparation and properties of different nanoclays modified by organic amines (octadecyl amine, a primary amine, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, a tertiary amine) and brominated polyisobutylene‐co‐paramethylstyrene (BIMS)‐clay nanocomposites are reported. The clays and the rubber nanocomposites have been characterized with the help of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The X‐ray diffraction peaks observed in the range of 3 °–10 ° for the modified clays disappear in the rubber nanocomposites. TEM photographs show predominantly exfoliation of the clays in the range of 12 ± 4 nm in the BIMS. In the FTIR spectra of the nanocomposites, there are common peaks of virgin rubber as well as those of the clays. Excellent improvement in mechanical properties like tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus is observed on incorporation of the nanoclays in the BIMS. Structure‐property correlation in the above nanocomposites is attempted. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 4489–4502, 2004  相似文献

A high‐tension annealing (HTA) method has been applied to zone‐annealed poly(ethylene‐2,6‐naphthalate) (PEN) fibers in order to further improve their mechanical properties. The HTA treatment was carried out under an applied tension of 428 MPa at a treating temperature of 175 °C. The applied tension was close to the tensile strength at 175 °C. The resulting HTA fiber had a birefringence of 0.492 and degree of crystallinity of 57%. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) photographs of the HTA fibers showed three reflections (010, 100, and 1 10) attributed to an α form crystal, but no (020) reflection attributed to a β form was observed in the equator. The tensile modulus and tensile strength increased with processing, and the HTA fiber had a maximum modulus of 33 GPa, a tensile strength of 1.1 GPa, and a storage modulus of 33 GPa at 25 °C. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An improved synthetic method has been developed for oligomeric aromatic ether ketone‐based phthalonitrile (PN) resins. A new curing additive was studied that lowers the cure temperature of the PN resin to around 150 °C and compared to the traditional high‐temperature aromatic diamine. Mechanical and thermo‐oxidative analyses of polymeric samples from both systems were determined and compared under various curing conditions. The PN polymer exhibited low water absorption regardless of the chosen cure system. Published 2014. This article is a U.S. Government work and is in the public domain in the USA. J. Polym. Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) reinforced methacrylate (MA) resin nanocomposite was prepared by 3D stereolithography printing. A postcure process, where the printed nanocomposite was heat‐treated under different temperatures, was applied to improve the property of the printed nanocomposites. To investigate the effect of CNC and postcure temperature on the kinetic behavior of the postpolymerization of printed nanocomposites, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry measurement of the printed nanocomposites before and after postcure were analyzed. The postpolymerization of MA nanocomposites was promoted at a postcure temperature of 140 °C for the printed 0.5% CNC/MA nanocomposites compared to the printed MA resin. The addition of CNC retarded the polymerization of MA resin during 3D printing, resulting in poorer mechanical properties of the printed nanocomposites compared to the printed MA resin. However, after postcure, the mechanical properties of the printed nanocomposites were improved by the postpolymerization of the MA nanocomposites. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A biodegradable aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethane based on L ‐lysine diisocyanate and 1,4‐butanediol hard block segments, and 2000 g/mol poly(ε‐caprolactone) diol soft block segments was synthesized. The resulting polymer was a tough thermoplastic with ultimate tensile strength of 33 MPa and elongation of 1000%. The polymer displayed classic segmented thermoplastic elastomer morphology with distinct hard block and soft block phases. Thermal and dynamic mechanical analyses determined that the material has a useful service temperature range of around ?40 °C to +40 °C, making it an excellent candidate for low‐temperature elastomer and film applications, and potentially as a material for use in temporary orthopedic implant devices. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Functional fillers in multilayered films provide opportunity in tailoring the mechanical properties through chemical cross‐linking. In this study, Laponite‐graphene oxide co‐dispersion was used to incorporate graphene oxide (GO) easily into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Laponite layer‐by‐layer (LBL) films. The LBL films were found to be uniform and the layer thickness increased linearly with number of depositions. The process was extended to a large number of depositions to investigate the macroscopic mechanical properties of the free‐standing films. The LBL films showed remarkable improvements in mechanical properties as compared to neat PVA film. The GO‐incorporated LBL films displayed higher enhancements in the tensile strength, ductility, and toughness as compared to that of PVA/Laponite LBL films, upon chemical cross‐linking. This suggests the advantageous effects of GO incorporation. Interestingly, cross‐linking of LBL films for longer time period (>1 h) and higher temperature (~80 °C) was not found to be much beneficial. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Two dianiline monomers were prepared by the reaction of either 4,4′‐methylenedianiline or 4,4′‐oxydianiline with 1,4‐benzoquinone. These monomers were used to synthesize a series of amine–quinone polyimides by condensation with either 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride or 4,4′‐(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride to make the corresponding polyamic acid. The polyamic acids were converted to the polyimides by thermal imidization at 290 °C. The amine–quinone polyimides gave freestanding films with tensile strengths in the range of 90 to 150 MPa and Young's moduli of 0.9 to 1.5 GPa. The thermal decomposition temperature under nitrogen was 440 to 480 °C and the glass‐transition temperature was in the range of 280 to 310 °C. The amine–quinone polyimides had the excellent thermal and mechanical properties that one expects for polyimides. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of new organosoluble poly(amine hydrazide)s were synthesized via the Yamazaki phosphorylation reaction and were solution‐cast into transparent films. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the hydrazide polymers could be thermally cyclodehydrated into the corresponding oxadiazole polymers in the range of 300–400 °C. The resulting poly(amine‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole)s exhibited glass‐transition temperatures in the range of 276–297 °C, 10% weight loss temperatures in excess of 520 °C, and char yields at 800 °C in nitrogen higher than 67%. The hole‐transporting and electrochromic properties were examined with electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods. Cyclic voltammograms of these polymers prepared by the casting of polymer solutions onto an indium tin oxide coated glass substrate exhibited two reversible oxidative redox couples at 1.10–1.19 and 1.35–1.60 V versus Ag/AgCl in an acetonitrile solution, respectively. The poly(amine hydrazide)s revealed excellent stability of the electrochromic characteristics, changing color from the original pale yellow to green and then to blue. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The conversion of poly(amic acid) into polyimide (PI) was achieved with far‐infrared radiation (FIR) and conventional thermal treatments. The structure and properties of PI films during different stages of imidization were studied with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, weight‐loss analysis during imidization, tensile property measurements, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The effects of the imidization degree, postimidization, and solvent on the thermal and mechanical properties of PI films were quantitatively investigated. The corresponding structural changes were also examined. The experimental results showed that the imidization process proceeded more quickly and more completely in an FIR oven than in a conventional oven. A prolonged FIR treatment at a lower temperature (25–100 °C) accelerated the imidization process. The tensile stress–strain curves had a fanlike distribution with the development of the FIR imidization process and a fishtail distribution with conventional thermal imidization. During FIR imidization, the best tensile properties were obtained at 340 °C, and thermooxidative degradation occurred at about 420 °C. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermomechanical properties of anion exchange polymers based on polysulfone (PSU) quaternized with trimethylamine (TMA) or 1,4‐diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and containing hydroxide or chloride anions by tensile stress–strain tests and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) have been determined. The reported mechanical properties included the Young's modulus, tensile strength, and elongation at break from tensile tests and the storage and loss modulus and glass transition temperature from DMA. The anion exchange membranes behaved as stiff polymers with Young's modulus in the order of 1 GPa, relatively with high strength (about 30 MPa) and low elongation at break (around 10%) was observed. Tensile tests were also made with membranes exchanged with hydrogen‐carbonate and carbonate anions to control the absence of important carbonation of the OH form. The glass transition temperatures were of the order of 150 °C (PSU‐TMA) or 200 °C (PSU‐DABCO) for the hydroxide form, confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry; they increase further by about 50 K, when hydroxide ions are replaced by chloride. This result and the increase of the storage modulus could be interpreted by the higher hydration of hydroxide ions and the plasticizing effect of water, which reduced the Van der Waals interactions between the macromolecular chains. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Knowing the mechanical properties of UV‐curable resins at cryogenic conditions is important to ongoing fusion‐energy research and to emerging aerospace applications. The tensile and interfacial shear strengths of two commercially available UV‐curable resins were measured at room‐temperature and cryogenic conditions for both bulk and reduced (subnanoliter) specimen volumes. The tensile properties of cured specimens are remarkably sensitive to both testing temperature and specimen size. For one type of resin, the cold (?150 °C) tensile strength of subnanoliter specimens is ~9× larger (179 ± 19 MPa) than bulk values at room temperature. The interfacial shear strength between SiC fibers and small volumes of resin volumes is comparable to the bulk, room‐temperature tensile strength, but it varies over a wide range at ?150 °C (15–53 MPa). All resins were fully cured, and an analysis of fractured surfaces revealed microstructural features. The enhanced strength in microscopic specimens may be related to inhomogeneous stress fields that develop during cure. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. The mechanical properties of linear and V‐shaped compositional gradient copolymer of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate with composition of around 55 wt % styrene were investigated by comparing with their block copolymer counterparts. Compared with their block copolymer counterparts, the gradient copolymers showed lower elastic modulus, much larger elongation at break, and similar ultimate tensile strength at room temperature. This performance could be ascribed to that the local moduli continuously change from the hardest nanodomains to the softest nanodomains in the gradient copolymer, which alleviates the stress concentration during tensile test. Compared with the V‐shaped gradient (VG) copolymer, the linear gradient copolymer showed much higher elastic modulus but lower elongation at break. The mechanical properties of the gradient copolymers were more sensitive to the change in temperature from 9 °C to 75 °C. With recovery temperature increased from 10 °C to 60 °C, the strain recovery of VG copolymer would change steadily from 40% to 99%. However, the elastic recovery of linear and triblock copolymer was poor even at 60 °C. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2015 , 53, 860–868  相似文献

The relationships among cure temperature, chemical kinetics, microstructure, and mechanical performance have been investigated for vinyl–ester resins. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to follow the reactions of vinyl–ester and styrene during isothermal curing of Dow Derakane 411‐C‐50 at 30 and 90°C. Reactivity ratios of vinyl–ester and styrene vinyl groups were evaluated using the copolymer composition equation. The results indicate that the ratio of vinyl–ester to styrene double bonds incorporated into the network is greater for 30 than for 90°C cure. Mechanical properties were obtained for systems subjected to isothermal cures at 30 and 90°C and postcured above ultimate Tg. The results show that the initial cure temperature significantly affects the mechanical behavior of vinyl–ester resin systems. In particular, values of strength and fracture toughness for postcured samples initially cured isothermally at 30°C are significantly higher than those obtained for samples cured isothermally at 90°C. Examination of fracture surfaces using atomic force microscopy revealed the existence of a nodular microstructure possessing characteristic nodule dimensions that are affected by the temperature of cure. Such features suggest the existence of phase separation during cure. A binary interaction model in conjunction with chemical kinetic data and estimated solubility parameters was used to evaluate enthalpic interactions between the growing polymer network and monomers of the vinyl–ester system. The results indicate that the interaction energy becomes increasingly endothermic as cure progresses and that this energy is affected by the temperature of cure through differences in copolymerization behavior. Hence, in addition to entropic factors, the changes in enthalpic contribution to the Gibbs free energy suggest that the probability of phase separation increases with extent of cure and that its onset is potentially affected by cure temperature. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Three series of semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks, based on crosslinked poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPA) and 1 wt % nonionic or ionic (cationic and anionic) linear polyacrylamide (PAAm), were synthesized to improve the mechanical properties of PNIPA gels. The effect of the incorporation of linear polymers into responsive networks on the temperature‐induced transition, swelling behavior, and mechanical properties was studied. Polymer networks with four different crosslinking densities were prepared with various molar ratios (25:1 to 100:1) of the monomer (N‐isopropyl acrylamide) to the crosslinker (methylenebisacrylamide). The hydrogels were characterized by the determination of the equilibrium degree of swelling at 25 °C, the compression modulus, and the effective crosslinking density, as well as the ultimate hydrogel properties, such as the tensile strength and elongation at break. The introduction of cationic and anionic linear hydrophilic PAAm into PNIPA networks increased the rate of swelling, whereas the presence of nonionic PAAm diminished it. Transition temperatures were significantly affected by both the crosslinking density and the presence of linear PAAm in the hydrogel networks. Although anionic PAAm had the greatest influence on increasing the transition temperature, the presence of nonionic PAAm caused the highest dimensional change. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks reinforced with cationic and nonionic PAAm exhibited higher tensile strengths and elongations at break than PNIPA hydrogels, whereas the presence of anionic PAAm caused a reduction in the mechanical properties. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The relationship between the microstructure and the properties of poly(1,3-cyclohexadiene)s, obtained by living anionic polymerization with an alkyllithium/amine system, and their hydrogenated derivatives are reported. The 1,2-bond/1,4-bond molar ratio of poly(1,3-cyclohexadiene) was determined by measuring 2D-NMR with the H H COSY method. The glass transition temperature of poly(1,3-cyclohexadiene) was found to rise with an increase in the ratio of 1,2-bonds to 1,4-bonds or with an increase of the number average molecular weight. The 1,2-bond of the polymer chain gives a high flexural strength and heat distortion temperature. Hydrogenated poly(1,3-cyclohexadiene) has the highest Tg (231°C) among all hydrocarbon polymers ever reported. 1,3-Cyclohexadiene–butadiene–1,3-cyclohexadiene triblock copolymer and 1,3-cyclohexadiene–styrene–1,3-cyclohexadiene triblock copolymer have high heat resistance and high mechanical strength. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The sustainable resveratrol‐based phthalonitrile was used in the preparation of E‐glass fiber‐reinforced phthalonitrile composite panels fabricated by hot pressed prepreg consolidation with bis[4‐(3‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]sulfone (m‐BAPS) as the curing additive. This amorphous monomer exhibited excellent viscosities at temperatures below 200 °C, which is applicable to standard processing conditions. Rheometric measurements were used to evaluate the cure of the composite as a function of the postcure conditions. The composite retains >95% of its room temperature storage modulus up to 450 °C based on these postcuring parameters. More importantly, flammability performance of the composite—which was determined in terms of ignitability, heat release, and mass loss rate—excels over other state‐of‐the‐art polymer/glass composites. Even under the most extreme heat fluxes (e.g., 100 kW⋅m−2), the composite performs exceptionally well suggesting that resveratrol‐based phthalonitrile composites can be used in fire‐resistant applications. A siloxane‐containing diphenol is synthesized from 1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane and o‐allylphenol, followed by the Mannich condensation with aniline, methylamine, and formaldehyde yielding two siloxane‐containing benzoxazines. The onset polymerization temperature of aniline‐based benzoxazine is higher than that of the methylamine counterpart. The dynamic mechanical properties of the polybenzoxazines depend on the structure of the starting primary amines. Both polybenzoxazines exhibit one‐way dual‐shape memory behavior in response to changes in temperature, and they show excellent shape fixity ratios in bending, tension, and tensile stress–strain tests, high shape recovery ratios in bending and tension tests, but relatively low shape recovery ratios in tensile stress–strain test. The network chain segments including the alkylsiloxane units serve as a thermal control switch based on the glass transition temperatures (39 and 53 °C) for the polybenzoxazines. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the preparation and characterization of a series of novel electrochromic, aromatic poly(amine amide)s with pendent triphenylamine units. The synthesis proceeded via direct phosphorylation polycondensation between a novel diamine, N,N‐bis(4‐aminophenyl)‐N′,N′‐diphenyl‐1,4‐phenylenediamine, and various aromatic dicarboxylic acids. All the poly(amine amide)s were amorphous and readily soluble in many common organic solvents and could be solution‐cast into transparent, tough, and flexible films with good mechanical properties. They exhibited good thermal stability and 10% weight‐loss temperatures above 540 °C. Their glass‐transition temperatures were 263–290 °C. These polymers in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone solutions exhibited strong ultraviolet–visible absorption peaks at 307–358 nm and photoluminescence peaks around 532–590 nm in the green region. The hole‐transporting and electrochromic properties were studied with electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods. Cyclic voltammograms of poly(amine amide) films prepared by the casting of polymer solutions onto an indium tin oxide coated glass substrate exhibited two reversible oxidation redox couples at 0.65 and 1.03 V versus Ag/AgCl in an acetonitrile solution. All the poly(amine amide)s showed excellent stability with respect to their electrochromic characteristics; the color of the films changed from pale yellow to green and then blue at 0.85 and 1.25 V, respectively. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
