We have investigated the relationship between the polar anchoring strength and surface ordering in a nematic liquid crystal on two kinds of weakly rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces. The polar anchoring strength of 5CB on weakly rubbed PI surfaces, both with and without side chains, increases with rubbing strength and with decreasing temperature. The surface order parameter of 5CB on these surfaces increases with rubbing strength, suggesting that the polar anchoring strength on rubbed PI surfaces is related to the surface order parameter.  相似文献

High pretilt angles, polar anchoring energy (out of plane-tilt), and surface ordering in the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) were investigated on rubbed organic solvent soluble polyimide (PI) surfaces with a helical backbone structure and trifluoromethyl moieties. It was found that the pretilt angle of 5CB is about 15° in the wide rubbing region of rubbed soluble PI surfaces with trifluoromethyl moieties attached to the lateral benzene rings. It is suggested that the microscopic surface structure of the polymer contributes to the LC pretilt angle generation at the surface. Also, the polar anchoring energy of 5CB is dependent on the molecular structure of these unidirectionally rubbed soluble PI surfaces. The polar anchoring strength of 5CB on rubbed soluble PI surfaces is as weak with trifluoromethyl moieties attached to the lateral benzene rings weak as when the trifluoromethyl moieties are attached to the polymer backbone. Finally, the polar anchoring energy of 5CB strongly depends on the surface ordering of rubbed soluble PI surfaces.  相似文献

A novel double‐layer alignment film (DLAF) was developed to obtain greater control of the alignment characteristics of the liquid crystal director. The DLAF consists of a thin fluorinated polymer layer on the top of a rubbed non‐fluorinated, non‐branched polyimide layer (PI 2555). Two types of fluorinated polymer with different chemical structures and wetting behaviour on PI 2555 were chosen, to provide either continuous or discontinuous top layers. The continuous top layer DLAF (DLAF‐1) exhibits an abrupt pretilt transition from planar to homeotropic as the top layer thickness increases. The discontinuous top layer DLAF (DLAF‐2) exhibits a gradual transition where the pretilt correlates with the coverage of fluorinated top layer. These two types of transitions fit with de Gennes' local Frederick's transition and Kwok's inhomogeneous alignment theories, respectively. The abrupt pretilt transition system may be promising for chemical/biosensor applications, whereas the gradual transition system is suitable for pretilt control in LCD devices.  相似文献

Molecular organization at polyimide surfaces used as alignment layers in liquid crystal displays was investigated using vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. We focus on the orientation of the long alkyl side groups at the polymer surface using polarization-selected SFG spectra of the CH(3)- and CH(2)-stretch modes of the side chain. Mechanical rubbing and baking, an accepted industrial procedure used to produce pretilt of the liquid crystal, was found to induce pronounced azimuthal anisotropy in the orientational distribution of the alkyl side chains. Orientational analysis of the SFG vibrational spectra in terms of the azimuthal and tilt angles (in and out of plane, respectively) of the alkyl side chains shows their preferential tilt along the rubbing direction, with the azimuthal distribution narrower for stronger rubbed polymer samples.  相似文献

We investigated new rubbing-free techniques for liquid crystal (LC) alignment with non- polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on plates coated with two kinds of the polyimide (PI) films. It was found that monodomain alignment of nematic (N) LC is obtained in the cell having a PI surface without a side chain. We successfully observed that the generated pretilt angle of the NLC is about 3 with an angle of incidence of 70 on the PI surface without side chains. This pretilt angle generation is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces; the uniform alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force effects due to photo-depolymerization of polymer on PI surfaces.  相似文献

We propose and investigate obtaining high pretilt nematic alignment using a new photoalignment method: single oblique polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surfaces. It was found that the monodomain alignment in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) is obtained with PI surfaces having side chains. We successfully observed that the generated high pretilt angles of the NLC are about 6 with an angle of incidence of 5 80 on the PI surface. Also, the generated pretilt angle of NLC is about 6 with an UV light irradiation of 30 min for angle of incidence of 5, and decreases with increasing UV light irradiation time. High pretilt orientation of the NLC is successfully observed in cells with a single oblique UV light irradiation on PI surfaces.  相似文献

The mechanism of liquid crystal (LC) alignment has been investigated during the last few decades for inorganic materials as well as for organic materials; however, it has not been clearly confirmed for some alignment materials. Inorganic alignment materials such as amorphous silicon oxide (a-SiOx) and hydrogenated amorphous silicon oxide (a-SiOx:H) are deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) films on glass by reactive sputtering deposition. After deposition, the inorganic alignment materials are irradiated using an Ar+ ion beam (IB) for LC alignment. On the basis of the experimental results, a-SiOx films deposited by the sputtering do not align the LC, but a-SiOx:H films treated with varying IB energies, IB incident angles, IB doses, and IB irradiation times have excellent alignment properties and electrooptical properties, identical to those of polyimide (PI). These results imply that inorganic alignment layers irradiated by IB can be adopted as an LC alignment layer instead of rubbed PI. Additionally, hydrogen plays an important role in LC alignment because of the difference in alignment properties between a-SiOx films and a-SiOx:H films. We investigate the mechanism of IB-treated inorganic alignment layers and suggest that LCs are aligned by chemical effects, such as van der Waals interaction, more than by physical effects, such as morphology effects, in the inorganic alignment layer irradiated by IB.  相似文献

The polar anchoring strength and pretilt angle generation in nematic liquid crystals (NLCs), on three kinds of rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces, were investigated. The pretilt angle generated in 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) is large compared with ZLI-4792 (a fluorinated mixture type NLC) for all rubbed PI surfaces. The high pretilt angle in 5CB is attributed to a much larger birefringence and much larger perpendicular component of permittivity. The polar anchoring energy of ZLI-4792 is high compared with 5CB on all rubbed PI surfaces for a weak rubbing strength. It is suggested that the high anchoring energy of ZLI-4792 may be attributed to the low NLC pretilt angle.  相似文献
