Diesel soot (Euro IV and Euro VI) was investigated with spectroscopic methods such as near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). C and O K-edge NEXAFS show that structural disorder on the surface is accompanied by a higher amount of oxygen functional groups. O K-edge NEXAFS and O1s XPS results are discussed with the aim to elucidate the nature of the oxygen surface species. The analysis of the data presented here allows the postulation of a hypothetical structure for soot samples emitted by diesel engines.  相似文献

The interaction of bi-isonicotinic acid (4,4(')-dicarboxy-2,2(')-bipyridine) with the Au(111) surface has been investigated using electron spectroscopic techniques. Near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra show that monolayers of the molecule lie flat to the surface and also reveal that the monolayer is sensitive to the preparation conditions employed. Core level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that the adsorbed molecule does not undergo deprotonation upon adsorption. The "core-hole clock" implementation of resonant photoemission has been used to probe the coupling between molecule and substrate. This technique has revealed the possibility of ultrafast backtransfer from the substrate into the molecule upon resonant excitation of a N 1s core level electron. This is supported by a NEXAFS and XPS investigation of energy level alignments in the system.  相似文献

The adsorption of atomic hydrogen on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is studied using two element-specific spectroscopies, i.e., near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). B K-edge NEXAFS spectra show a clear change in the energy region of the π* band before and after reaction with atomic deuterium. On the other hand, N K-edge NEXAFS spectra show only a little change. B 1s XPS spectra show a distinct component at the low binding energy side of a main component, while N 1s XPS spectra show peak broadening at the high binding energy side. These experimental results are analyzed by the discrete variational Xα method with a core-hole effect and are explained by a model in which hydrogen atoms are preferentially adsorbed on the B sites of h-BN. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, we propose a site-selective property of BN material on adsorption of atomic hydrogen.  相似文献

We demonstrate that well-defined monolayers of a metal complex on a surface can be prepared by direct vapor deposition of the metal atoms on monolayers of the ligand. In particular, ordered monolayers of adsorbed tetraphenylporphyrin (2H-TPP) on a silver surface were exposed to cobalt vapors, resulting in the complexation of the metal by the porphyrin. The formation of the metal complexes was monitored by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which reveals that this metalation reaction leads to a chemical equivalence of all four nitrogen atoms. The described in situ metalation provides a convenient way to produce adsorbed monolayers of more reactive (e.g., air- or solvent-sensitive) or thermally unstable metalloporphyrins that are difficult to evaporate or even to obtain as pure compounds at room temperature.  相似文献

The speciation and quantification of sulfur species based on sulfur K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy is of wide interest, particularly for biological and petroleum science. These tasks require a firm understanding of the sulfur 1s near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of relevant species. To this end, we have examined the gas phase sulfur 1s NEXAFS spectra of a group of simple thiol and thioether compounds. These high-resolution gas phase spectra are free of solid-state broadening, charging, and saturation effects common in the NEXAFS spectra of solids. These experimental data have been further analyzed with the aid of improved virtual orbital Hartree-Fock ab initio calculations. The experimental sulfur 1s NEXAFS spectra show fine features predicted by calculation, and the combination of experiment and calculation has been used to improve assignment of spectroscopic features relevant for the speciation and quantification of the sulfur compounds.  相似文献

The metalation of the tetradentate molecule pyrphyrin by copper substrate atoms on a Cu(111) surface is studied. Pyrphyrin, in contrast to porphyrin, consists of four fused pyridine groups instead of pyrrol groups. Using thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS ) and N 1s X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS ), we show that metalation of the monolayer of pyrphyrin with Cu atoms from the Cu(111) surface occurs at 377 K. The formation of an extended two‐dimensional (2D) network is observed with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM ). A honeycomb‐like lattice of metalated pyrphyrin molecules is formed by intermolecular connection via the two cyano groups at the periphery of pyrphyrin as well as Cu adatoms. Dehydrogenation at the periphery of the molecule is observed during annealing at 520 K. The surface‐adsorbed metal‐pyrphyrin has the potential to serve as a molecular catalyst.  相似文献

Ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS) of C(82) isomers have been calculated using hybrid density functional theory in combination with the Gelius model [Proceedings of the International Conference on Electron spectroscopy, edited by D. A. Shirley (North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1972), p. 311; J. Electron Spectrosc. Relat. Phenom. 5, 985 (1974)]. The calculated UPS spectra are found to be isomer dependent and in good agreement with the experimental counterparts. Near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray emission spectroscopy, and the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of three important isomers [3(C(2)), 6(C(s)), and 9(C(2v))] have also been simulated. Strong isomer dependence has also been found for NEXAFS, XPS, and RIXS spectra.  相似文献

Carbohydrate films on gold based on dimannoside thiols (DMT) were prepared, and a complementary surface chemical analysis was performed in detail by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), FT-IR, and contact angle measurements in order to verify formation of ω-carbohydrate-functionalized alkylthiol films. XPS (C 1s, O 1s, and S 2p) reveals information on carbohydrate specific alkoxy (C-O) and acetal moieties (O-C-O) as well as thiolate species attached to gold. Angle-resolved synchrotron XPS was used for chemical speciation at ultimate surface sensitivity. Angle-resolved XPS analysis suggests the presence of an excess top layer composed of unbound sulfur components combined with alkyl moieties. Further support for DMT attachment on Au is given by ToF-SIMS and FT-IR analysis. Carbon and oxygen K-edge NEXAFS spectra were interpreted by applying the building block model supported by comparison to data of 1-undecanethiol, poly(vinyl alcohol), and polyoxymethylene. No linear dichroism effect was observed in the angle-resolved C K-edge NEXAFS.  相似文献

The composition and electronic structure of cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles formed by the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique on clean silicon wafers and the surface of vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays are studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The samples were annealed in a vacuum at 175 °C and 225 °C to remove the organic matrix of the LB film. From the analysis of the XPS data the increased concentration of sulfate groups on the surface of CdS nanoparticles formed on CNTs and the electron density transfer from CdS to CNTs are determined. An increase in the LB film annealing temperature causes an increase in the degree of crystallinity and the CdS crystallite size and a decrease in the photoluminescence intensity of a CdS–CNT hybrid.  相似文献

X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near‐edge x‐ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy have been used to study the time‐dependent adsorption and molecular orientation behaviour of octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODTMS) on native aluminium oxide surfaces. By measuring the adsorption isotherm using XPS, we show that ODTMS molecules exhibit oscillatory adsorption. The oscillatory adsorption behaviour for ODTMS is analogous to that observed for its simpler short‐chain ‘cousin’—propyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS)—and suggests that the length of the functional alkyl chain on an organosilane does not have a significant influence upon the oscillatory adsorption mechanism. The oscillation in the ODTMS adsorption isotherm shows a maximum and a minimum in coverage at an adsorption time of ~30 and ~65 s, respectively, for a 0.75% ODTMS solution in a 90% ethanol–10% water mixture at pH 4. The time‐dependent orientation behaviour of the ODTMS molecules during adsorption was examined using angular‐dependent carbon K‐edge NEXAFS spectroscopy. We show that the alignment of the ODTMS film changes systematically with deposition time and appears to be correlated with coverage measurements obtained using XPS. In particular, by combining the XPS and NEXAFS results we demonstrate that the minimum ODTMS coverage corresponds to a film whose alignment appears to be predominantly randomized. Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, AES) were used to study MOCVD of Cu-clusters on the mixed terminated ZnO(1010) surface in comparison to MBE Cu-deposition. Both deposition methods result in the same Cu cluster morphology. After annealing to 670 K the amount of Cu visible above the oxide surface is found to decrease substantially, indicating a substantial diffusion of Cu atoms inside the ZnO-bulk. The spectroscopic data do not show any evidence for changes in the Cu oxidation state during thermal treatment up to 770 K.  相似文献

Interfaces between phenylacetylene (PA) monolayers and two silicon surfaces, Si(111) and Si(100), are probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, and the results are analyzed using ab initio molecular orbital calculations. The monolayer systems are prepared via the surface hydrosilylation reaction between PA and hydrogen-terminated silicon surfaces. The following spectral features are obtained for both of the PA-Si(111) and PA-Si(100) systems: a broad π-π* shakeup peak at 292 eV (XPS), a broad first ionization peak at 3.8 eV (UPS), and a low-energy C 1s → π* resonance peak at 284.3 eV (NEXAFS). These findings are ascribed to a styrene-like π-conjugated molecular structure at the PA-Si interface by comparing the experimental data with theoretical analysis results. A conclusion is drawn that the vinyl group can keep its π-conjugation character on the hydrogen-terminated Si(100) [H:Si(100)] surface composed of the dihydride (SiH(2)) groups as well as on hydrogen-terminated Si(111) having the monohydride (SiH) group. The formation mechanism of the PA-Si(100) interface is investigated within cluster ab initio calculations, and the possible structure of the H:Si(100) surface is discussed based on available data.  相似文献

The adsorption of L-histidine on clean and oxygen-covered Cu(110) surfaces has been studied by soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The valence band spectra, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen 1 s XPS and N K edge absorption spectra were measured for submonolayer, monolayer, and multilayer films. The spectra provide a detailed picture of the electronic structure and adsorption geometry at each coverage. In the monolayer, the histidine molecules are randomly oriented, in contrast to the submonolayer regime, where the molecules are coordinated to the copper surface with the imidazole functional group nearly parallel to, and strongly interacting with, the surface. The pi*/sigma* intensity ratio in NEXAFS spectra at the nitrogen edge varies strongly with angle, showing the imidazole ring is oriented. Adsorption models are proposed.  相似文献

Hydrogen-bond formation between ionic adsorbates on an Ag(111) surface under ultrahigh vacuum was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and molecular dynamics calculations. The adsorbate, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (trimesic acid, TMA), self-assembles at low temperatures (250-300 K) into the known open honeycomb motif through neutral hydrogen bonds formed between carboxyl groups, whereas annealing at 420 K leads to a densely packed quartet structure consisting of flat-lying molecules with one deprotonated carboxyl group per molecule. The resulting charged carboxylate groups form intermolecular ionic hydrogen bonds with enhanced strength compared to the neutral hydrogen bonds; this represents an alternative supramolecular bonding motif in 2D supramolecular organization.  相似文献

Organic ditellurides (R2Te2 where R = n-butyl (C4), n-octyl (C8), and n-cetyl (C16)) were synthesized, and their adsorption states after oxidation on Au(111) surfaces were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), theoretical analyses, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurements, contact angle measurements, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The obtained results show that dialkyl ditellurides form autooxidized monolayers (AMs) on the surfaces under ambient conditions and that the oxidation process is accelerated by ambient light. XPS, UPS, and theoretical analyses suggest that the autooxidized ditelluride species consist of polymers or oligomers with Te-O-Te-O network structures stabilized by oxygen bridges between tellurium molecules following the cleavage of tellurium-gold bonds. NEXAFS and contact angle measurements indicate that the average tilt angles of the alkyl chains from the surface normal are smaller for the AMs of dialkyl ditellurides having longer alkyl chains. AFM measurements show defects and roughness features around a few angstroms in height on the surfaces of the dialkyl ditelluride AMs.  相似文献

Nitric acid passivation, as part of the ASTM-F86 protocol for metal implant preparation, has been studied on titanium and Ti6Al4V surfaces by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nuclear reaction analysis (NRA). The surface types studied, (including thermal annealing at 1250C in vacuum, rough grinding at 600 grit, and polishing at 1m) show varying surface oxide properties and sensitivity to nitric acid treatment. Changes in surface oxide properties in terms of thickness and constituent metal content resulting from nitric acid treatment are related to metal ion dissolution behaviour in a simulated biological fluid. Ti6Al4V in general is most sensitive to treatment in nitric acid by exhibiting a decrease in surface oxide thickness, an increase in Al concentration within the oxide, and an increase in dissolution of constituent metals into serum containing culture medium. Combined XPS and NRA analysis show surface oxide thicknesses to be more variable and non-uniform than XPS analysis alone would suggest.  相似文献

The growth of epitaxial ultrathin BaTiO(3) films on a Pt(100) substrate has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The films have been prepared by radio-frequency-assisted magnetron sputter deposition at room temperature and develop a long-range order upon annealing at 900 K in O(2). By adjusting the Ar and O(2) partial pressures of the sputter gas, the stoichiometry was tuned to match that of a BaTiO(3)(100) single crystal as determined by XPS. STM reveals the growth of continuous BaTiO(3) films with unit cell high islands on top. With LEED already for monolayer thicknesses, the formation of a BaTiO(3)(100)-(1 × 1) structure has been observed. Films of 2-3 unit cell thickness show a brilliant (1 × 1) LEED pattern for which an extended set of LEED I-V data has been acquired. At temperatures above 1050 K the BaTiO(3) thin film starts to decay by formation of vacancy islands. In addition (4 × 4) and (3 × 3) surface reconstructions develop upon prolonged heating.  相似文献

The geometric and electronic structures of several possible adsorption configurations of the pyrazine ({C\begin{document}$ _{4} $\end{document}}{H\begin{document}$ _{4} $\end{document}}{N\begin{document}$ _{2} $\end{document}}) molecule covalently attached to Si(100) surface, which is of vital importance in fabricating functional nano-devices, have been investigated using X-ray spectroscopies. The Carbon K-shell (1s) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy of predicted adsorbed structures have been simulated by density functional theory with cluster model calculations. Both XPS and NEXAFS spectra demonstrate the structural dependence on different adsorption configurations. In contrast to the XPS spectra, it is found that the NEXAFS spectra exhibiting conspicuous dependence on the structures of all the studied pyrazine/Si(100) systems can be well utilized for structural identification. In addition, according to the classification of carbon atoms, the spectral components of carbon atoms in different chemical environments have been investigated in the NEXAFS spectra as well.  相似文献

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a widely used polymer to which various phthalates are extensively applied as plasticizers. PVC materials are often treated with plasma to vary the hydrophobicity or for cleaning purposes, but little is known of the nature of the surface molecular structures after treatment. This research characterizes molecular surface structures of PVC and bis-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP)-plasticized PVC films in air before annealing, after annealing, and after exposure to air-generated glow discharge plasma using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. In addition, we compare the vibrational molecular signatures on the surfaces of PVC with DEHP (at a variety of percent loadings) to those of the bulk detected using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle measurements have been used to analyze PVC surfaces to supplement SFG data. Our results indicate that DEHP was found on the surfaces of PVC films even at low weight percentages (5 wt %) and that DEHP segregates on surfaces after annealing. The treatment of these films with glow discharge plasma resulted in surface-sensitive reactions involving the removal of chlorine atoms, the addition of oxygen atoms, and C-H bond rearrangement. CARS data demonstrate that the bulk of our films remained undisturbed during the plasma treatment. For the first time, we probed the molecular structure of the surface and the bulk of a PVC material using combined SFG and CARS studies on the same sample in exactly the same environment. In addition, the methodology used in this research can be applied to characterize various plasticizers in a wide variety of polymer systems to understand their surface and bulk structures before and after systematic applications of heat, plasma, or other treatments.  相似文献

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy are used for in situ studies of the electronic structure of lithiated natural graphite produced by thermal deposition of lithium upon graphite in a vacuum. By XPS and NEXAFS spectroscopy it is found that lithium vapor thermal deposition results in the formation of a lithiated graphite surface layer and a change in its electronic structure. Based on the quantum chemical simulation of the experimental СKα XES spectrum of lithiated graphite, it is found that lithium atoms are located mostly on the edges of graphite crystallites. Atomic force microscopy reveals that the size of natural graphite flakes varies from 50 nm to 200 nm.  相似文献
