Functional molecular wires are essential for the development of molecular electronics. Charge transport through molecules occurs primarily by means of two mechanisms, coherent superexchange and incoherent charge hopping. Rates of charge transport through molecules in which superexchange dominates decrease approximately exponentially with distance, which precludes using these molecules as effective molecular wires. In contrast, charge transport rates through molecules in which incoherent charge hopping prevails should display nearly distance independent, wirelike behavior. We are now able to determine how each mechanism contributes to the overall charge transport characteristics of a donor-bridge-acceptor (D-B-A) system, where D = phenothiazine (PTZ), B = p-oligophenylene, and A = perylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (PDI), by measuring the interaction between two unpaired spins within the system's charge separated state via magnetic field effects on the yield of radical pair and triplet recombination product.  相似文献

Exploring the charge transport properties and electronic functions of molecules is of primary interest in the area of molecular electronics. Conjugated polymers (CPs) represent an attractive class of molecular candidates, benefiting from their outstanding optoelectronic properties. However, they have been less studied compared with the small-molecule family, mainly due to the difficulties in incorporating CPs into molecular junctions. In this review, we present a summary on how to fabricate CP-based singlechain and monolayered junctions, then discuss the transport behaviors of CPs in different junction architectures and finally introduce the potential applications of CPs in molecular-scale electronic devices. Although the research on CP-based molecular electronics is still at the initial stage, it is widely accepted that (1) CP chains are able to mediate long-range charge transport if their molecular electronic structures are properly designed, which makes them potential molecular wires, and (2) the intrinsic optoelectronic properties of CPs and the possibility of incorporating desirable functionalities by synthetic strategies imply the potential of employing tailor-made polymeric components as alternatives to small molecules for future molecular-scale electronics.  相似文献

We describe the synthesis as well as the optical and charge‐transport properties of a series of donor–acceptor (D‐A) ladder‐type heteroacenes. These molecules are stable, soluble, and contain up to 24 fused rings. Structural analyses indicated that the backbones of S 10r and Se 10r are bent in single crystals. The three 10‐ring heteroacenes were functionalized with thiol anchoring groups and used for single‐molecular conductance measurements. The highest conductance was observed for molecular wires containing a benzoselenadiazole (BSD) moiety, which exhibits the narrowest band gap. Multiple charge‐transport pathways were observed in molecular wires containing either benzothiadiazole (BTD) or BSD. The conductance is a complex function of both energy gap and orbital alignment.  相似文献

In the context of investigating organic molecules for molecular electronics, doping molecular wires with transition metal atoms provides additional means of controlling their transport behavior. The incorporation of transition metal atoms may generate spin dependence because the conduction channels of only one spin component align with the chemical potential of the leads, resulting in a spin polarized electric current. The possibility to create such a spin polarized current is investigated here with the organometallic moiety cobaltocene. According to our calculations, cobaltocene contacted with gold electrodes acts as a robust spin filter: Applying a voltage less than 0.2 V causes the current of one spin component crossing the molecular bridge to be two orders of magnitude larger than the other. We address the key issue of sensitivity to molecule-lead geometry by showing that a weak barrier generated by CH(2) groups between the cobaltocene and the leads is crucial in reducing the sensitivity to the contact geometry while only reducing the current modestly. These results suggest cobaltocene as a robust basic building block for molecular spintronics.  相似文献

The dynamic disorder model for charge carrier transport in organic semiconductors has been extensively studied in recent years. Although it is successful on determining the value of bandlike mobility in the organic crystalline materials, the incoherent hopping, the typical transport characteristic in amorphous molecular semiconductors, cannot be described. In this work, the decoherence process is taken into account via a phenomenological parameter, say, decoherence time, and the projective and Monte Carlo method are applied for this model to determine the waiting time and thus the diffusion coefficient. It is obtained that the type of transport is changed from coherent to incoherent with a sufficiently short decoherence time, which indicates the essential role of decoherence time in determining the type of transport in organics. We have also discussed the spatial extent of carriers for different decoherence time, and the transition from delocalization (carrier resides in about 10 molecules) to localization is observed. Based on the experimental results of spatial extent, we estimate that the decoherence time in pentacene has the order of 1 ps. Furthermore, the dependence of diffusion coefficient on decoherence time is also investigated, and corresponding experiments are discussed.  相似文献

To investigate the electrical characteristics of organometallic complexes as molecular conductors, organometallic pi-conjugated molecules of the type trans-[PtL2(CCC6H4SAc-4)2], where L = PCy3, PBu3, PPh3, P(OEt)3, P(OPh)3, were synthesized and characterized by NMR, IR, UV, and X-ray spectroscopies. For the three complexes (L = PCy3, PPh3, and P(OEt)3) that could be measured using a cross-wire junction technique, the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of a molecular monolayer of these complexes showed no ligand effect, despite spectroscopic evidence that electronic interaction between the phosphine ligands and the pi-system does occur. It was concluded that the tunneling efficiency across the molecule is the determining factor for conduction in this metal-molecule-metal system. It was also shown that the incorporation of a transition metal in pi-conjugated molecular wires does not adversely affect charge transport compared to all-carbon pi-conjugated molecular wires.  相似文献

Advanced molecular electronic components remain vital for the next generation of miniaturized integrated circuits. Thus, much research effort has been devoted to the discovery of lossless molecular wires, for which the charge transport rate or conductivity is not attenuated with length in the tunneling regime. Herein, we report the synthesis and electrochemical interrogation of DNA‐like molecular wires. We determine that the rate of electron transfer through these constructs is independent of their length and propose a plausible mechanism to explain our findings. The reported approach holds relevance for the development of high‐performance molecular electronic components and the fundamental study of charge transport phenomena in organic semiconductors.  相似文献

The electronic structures of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) doped with organic molecules are investigated using density functional theory. An electrophilic molecule introduces acceptor states in the wide gap of BNNT close to the valence band edge, which makes the doped system a p-type semiconductor. However, with typical nucleophilic organic molecules encapsulation, only deep occupied molecular states but no shallow donor states are observed. There is a significant electron transfer from a BNNT to an electrophilic molecule, while the charge transfer between a nucleophilic molecule and a BNNT is negligible. When both electrophilic and nucleophilic molecules are encapsulated in the same BNNT, a large charge transfer between the two kinds of molecules occurs. The resulting small energy gap can strongly modify the transport and optical properties of the system.  相似文献

Charge transport in organic semiconductors is strongly dependent on their molecular packing modes in the solid state. Therefore, understanding the relationship between molecular packing and charge transport is imperative, both experimentally and theoretically. However, so far, the fundamental effects of solid‐state packing and molecular interactions (e.g. N? H ??? π) on charge transport need further elucidation. Herein, indolo[3,2‐b]carbazole (ICZ) and a derivative thereof are used as examples to approach this scientific target. An interesting insight obtained thereby is that N? H ??? π interactions among ICZ molecules facilitate charge transport for higher mobility. Subtle changes in the of N? H ??? π interactions can significantly influence both the molecular packing and the charge‐transport properties. Therefore, a method for exploiting intermolecular N? H ??? π interactions would yield novel molecular systems with designable characteristics.  相似文献

The electron transport through molecules in molecular devices is typically influenced by the nature of the interfaces with the contacting electrodes and by the interactions between neighbouring molecules. It is a major goal of molecular electronics to adjust the electronic function of a molecular device by tailoring the intrinsic molecular properties and the interfacial and intermolecular interactions. Here, we report on the tunability of the electronic properties of coronene derivatives, namely dodecakis(arylthio)coronenes (DATCs), which are found to exhibit a three-dimensional aromatic system. Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), spectroscopy (STS) and simulations based on the density functional theory (DFT) are employed to characterize the structural and electronic properties of these molecules deposited on Au(111) surfaces. It is shown that modifications of the peripheral aryl-groups allow us to specifically affect the self-assembly and the charge transport characteristics of the molecules. Molecular assemblies like supramolecular wires with highly delocalized orbitals and single molecules with molecular "quantum dot" characteristics are obtained in this way.  相似文献

Theoretical investigations of charge transport in organic materials are generally based on the "energy splitting in dimer" method and routinely assume that the transport parameters (site energies and transfer integrals) determined from monomer and dimer calculations can be reliably used to describe extended systems. Here, we demonstrate that this transferability can fail even in molecular crystals with weak van der Waals intermolecular interactions, due to the substantial (but often ignored) impact of polarization effects, particularly on the site energies. We show that the neglect of electronic polarization leads to qualitatively incorrect values and trends for the transfer integrals computed with the energy splitting method, even in simple prototypes such as ethylene or pentacene dimers. The polarization effect in these systems is largely electrostatic in nature and can change dramatically upon transition from a dimer to an extended system. For example, the difference in site energy for a prototypical "face-to-edge" one-dimensional stack of pentacene molecules is calculated to be 30% greater than that in the "face-to-edge" dimer, whereas the site energy difference in the pentacene crystal is vanishingly small. Importantly, when computed directly in the framework of localized monomer orbitals, the transfer integral values for dimer and extended systems are very similar.  相似文献

A series of star-shaped molecules with benzene core and naphthalimides derivatives end groups have been designed to explore their optical, electronic, and charge transport properties as charge transport and/or luminescent materials for organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs). The frontier molecular orbitals(FMOs) analysis has turned out that the vertical electronic transitions of absorption and emission are characterized as intramolecular charge transfer(ICT). The calculated results show that the optical and electronic properties of star-shaped molecules are affected by the substituent groups in N-position of 1,8-naphthalimide ring. Our results suggest that star-shaped molecules with n-butyl(1),benzene(2),thiophene(3),thiophene S?,S?-dioxide(4),benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole(5),and 2,7a-dihydrobenzo[d]thiazole(6) fragments are expected to be promising candidates for luminescent and electron transport materials for OLEDs. This study should be helpful in further theoretical investigations on such kind of systems and also to the experimental study for charge transport and/or luminescent materials for OLEDs.  相似文献

A great deal of interest has recently focused on host–guest systems consisting of one‐dimensional collinear arrays of conjugated molecules encapsulated in the channels of organic or inorganic matrices. Such architectures allow for controlled charge and energy migration processes between the interacting guest molecules and are thus attractive in the field of organic electronics. In this context, we characterize here at a quantum‐chemical level the molecular parameters governing charge transport in the hopping regime in 1D arrays built with different types of molecules. We investigate the influence of several parameters (such as the symmetry of the molecule, the presence of terminal substituents, and the molecular size) and define on that basis the molecular features required to maximize the charge carrier mobility within the channels. In particular, we demonstrate that a strong localization of the molecular orbitals in push–pull compounds is generally detrimental to the charge transport properties.  相似文献

Quantum yields for charge transport across adenine tracts of increasing length have been measured by monitoring hole transport in synthetic oligonucleotides between photoexcited 2-aminopurine, a fluorescent analogue of adenine, and N(2)-cyclopropyl guanine. Using fluorescence quenching, a measure of hole injection, and hole trapping by the cyclopropyl guanine derivative, we separate the individual contributions of single- and multistep channels to DNA charge transport and find that with 7 or 8 intervening adenines the charge transport is a coherent, single-step process. Moreover, a transition occurs from multistep to single-step charge transport with increasing donor/acceptor separation, opposite to that generally observed in molecular wires. These results establish that coherent transport through DNA occurs preferentially across 10 base pairs, favored by delocalization over a full turn of the helix.  相似文献

The role of the molecule-metal interface is a key issue in molecular electronics. Interface charge transfer processes for 4-fluorobenzenethiol monolayers with different molecular orientations on Au(111) were studied by resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The electrons excited into the LUMO or LUMO+1 are strongly localized for the molecules standing up on Au(111). In contrast, an ultrafast charge transfer process was observed for the molecules lying down on Au(111). This configuration-dependent ultrafast electron transfer is dominated by an adiabatic mechanism and directly reflects the delocalization of the molecular orbitals for molecules lying down on Au(111). Theoretical calculations confirm that the molecular orbitals indeed experience a localization-delocalization transition resulting from hybridization between the molecular orbitals and metal surface. Such an orientation-dependent transition could be harnessed in molecular devices that switch via charge transfer when the molecular orientation is made to change.  相似文献

The role of interface between molecular material and electrode on currents and photocurrents is considered. Mechanisms of charge carrier injection, electrode recombination and transport are discussed. Particularly thermal, excitonic, photo and tunneling injection of charge carriers, diffusion in presence of image force, interface barrier between electrode and organic materials and two organic materials, non-uniformity of electrodes and other phenomena on charge carrier injection are considered. The data presented in the review which complete theoretical considerations have been taken from previous as well as current literature. The considered phenomena are very important for the analysis of many practical problems for molecular electronic devices such as rectification of current, organic transistors, electroluminescence, photovoltaic effects and some similar problems.  相似文献

Understanding the effects of intermolecular interactions on the charge-transport properties of metal/molecule/metal junctions is an important step towards using individual molecules as building blocks for electronic devices. This work reports a systematic electron-transport investigation on a series of "core-shell"-structured oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (Gn-OPE) molecular wires. By using dendrimers of different generations as insulating "shells", the intermolecular π-π interactions between the OPE "cores" can be precisely controlled in single-component monolayers. Three techniques are used to evaluate the electron-transport properties of the Au/Gn-OPE/Au molecular junctions, including crossed-wire junction, scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and scanning tunneling microscope (STM) break-junction techniques. The STM break-junction measurement reveals that the electron-transport pathways are strongly affected by the size of the side groups. When the side groups are small, electron transport could occur through three pathways, including through single-molecule junctions, double-molecule junctions, and molecular bridges between adjacent molecules formed by aromatic π-π coupling. The dendrimer shells effectively prohibit the π-π coupling effect, but at the same time, very large dendrimer side groups may hinder the formation of Au-S bonds. A first-generation dendrimer acts as an optimal shell that only allows electron transport through the single-molecule junction pathway, and forbids the other undesired pathways. It is demonstrated that the dendrimer-based core-shell strategy allows the single-molecule conductance to be probed in a homogenous monolayer without the influence of intermolecular π-π interactions.  相似文献

Charge carrier dynamics in an organic semiconductor can often be described in terms of charge hopping between localized states. The hopping rates depend on electronic coupling elements, reorganization energies, and driving forces, which vary as a function of position and orientation of the molecules. The exact evaluation of these contributions in a molecular assembly is computationally prohibitive. Various, often semiempirical, approximations are employed instead. In this work, we review some of these approaches and introduce a software toolkit which implements them. The purpose of the toolkit is to simplify the workflow for charge transport simulations, provide a uniform error control for the methods and a flexible platform for their development, and eventually allow in silico prescreening of organic semiconductors for specific applications. All implemented methods are illustrated by studying charge transport in amorphous films of tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum, a common organic semiconductor.  相似文献
