Bubble characteristics such as density, size, frequency and motion are key factors that contribute to the superiority of nucleate pool boiling over other modes of heat transfer. Nevertheless, if heat transfer occurs in an environment prone to fouling, the very same parameters may lead to accelerated deposit formation due to concentration effects beneath the growing bubbles. This has led to the widely accepted design recommendation to maintain the heat transfer surface temperature below the boiling point if fouling may occur, e.g., in seawater desalination. The present paper aims at investigating the formation of deposits on finned tubes during nucleate pool boiling of CaSO4 solutions. The test finned tubes are low finned tubes with fin densities of 19 and 26 fins/in. made from Cu–Ni. The fouling experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure for different heat fluxes ranging from 100 to 300 kW/m2 and a CaSO4 concentration of 1.6 g/L. For the sake of comparison, similar runs were performed with smooth stainless steel tubes. The results show that: (1) the fouling resistance decreases with increasing fin density, (2) fouling on the finned tubes was reduced with increasing nucleate boiling activity and (3) if any fouling layer occurred on the finned tubes it could be removed easily.  相似文献

A large number of experiments have been performed with New Zealand Forest Products Kraft black liquor to measure heat transfer coefficients and fouling rates during convective and subcooled flow boiling heat transfer as a function of surface temperature, bulk temperature, velocity, and solids concentration. Results from experiments with two chemical fouling inhibitors, with Teflon surface coating and in plate and frame heat exchangers, also are presented. The fouling deposits are analyzed with respect to appearance, composition, and process conditions for which they were obtained. With the assumption of chemical reaction-controlled fouling, a deposition model is developed and compared with the experimental data.  相似文献

The present investigation shows that comparing with the evaporation of vapor-liquid two-phase flow boiling system, heat transfer is enhanced by adding proper inert solid particles into the traditional Chinese medicine liquid whichis under evaporation. As a result, fouling prevention effects are evident in such three-phase flow boiling evaporator.  相似文献

Porous media has been widely applied to enhance boiling heat transfer in industry, especially for increasing the value of critical heat flux (CHF). Two cases were considered in the paper: boiling within porous bed and boiling above on porous coatings. For boiling within porous bed, simplified Rayleigh–Taylor stability was analyzed and parametric effects of porous media on boiling critical heat flux were revealed. For boiling above on porous coatings, a simple new critical heat flux model was proposed basing on the analysis of liquid film stability and parametric effect of porous coatings on CHF was elaborated.  相似文献

An experimental study was performed to characterize the boiling heat transfer of impinging circular submerged jets on simulated microelectronic chips with a nominal area of 5 mm × 5 mm. The heat transfer modes included natural convection, partially developed nucleate boiling, fully developed nucleate boiling and critical heat flux. The study included the effects of jet parameters and fluid subcooling on the nucleate boiling. The results showed that the nucleate boiling data varied only with fluid subcooling regardless of jet parameters and that both the pool and impingement nucleate boiling curves at the same subcooling condition were well correlated. The high heat flux portions of the boiling curves with jet exit velocities greater than 10 m/s were corrected for the elevated saturation temperature. A new expression was developed with an interpolation method to construct the partially developed nucleate boiling curve.  相似文献

We report the results of an experimental investigation of the heat transfer during nucleate boiling on a spatially confined boiling surface. The heat flux as a function of the boiling surface temperature was measured in pool boiling pots with diameters ranging from 15 mm down to 4.5 mm. It was found that a reduction of the pool diameter leads to an enhancement of the nucleate boiling heat flux for most of the boiling curve. Our experimental results indicate that this enhancement is not affected by the depth of the boiling pot, the material of the bounding wall, or the diameter of the inlet water supply. High-speed camera imaging shows that the heat transfer enhancement for the spatially confined pool boiling occurs in conjunction with a stable circulating flow, which is in contrast to the chaotic and mainly upward motion for boiling in larger pool diameters. An explanation for the enhancement of the heat transfer and the associated change in flow pattern is found in the singularisation of the nucleate boiling process.  相似文献

In desalinization devices and some heat exchangers making use of low-quality heat energy, both wall temperatures and wall heat fluxes of the heated tubes are generally quite low; hence they cannot cause boiling in flooded tube-bundle evaporators with common large tube spacing. However, when the tube spacing is very small, the incipient boiling in restricted spaces can generate and results in higher heat transfer than that of pool boiling at the same heat flux. This study investigated experimentally the effects of tube spacing, positions of tubes and test pressures on the boiling heat transfer of water in restricted spaces of the compact in-line bundles consisting of smooth horizontal tubes. The experimental results show that tube spacing and tube position have significant effects on the boiling heat transfer in a compact tube bundle. There is an optimum tube spacing that provides the largest heat transfer coefficient at the same heat flux.  相似文献

This paper proposes a novel method for controlling the boiling phenomena of a thermally heterogeneous field on a surface. To achieve thermal heterogeneity, we used a heat flux gradient. The control method is based on radial pitch control of the patterned wettability using hydrophobic dots. The area fraction of the hydrophobic dots was set to be small near the center of the hot-spot and large in the marginal region. Consequently, the boiling phenomena at the center changed from a film boiling regime to a nucleate boiling regime. Compared with an uncontrolled surface, the critical heat flux was enhanced at the center region, and the heat transfer rate was enhanced at the marginal region. Pitch control prevents film generation at the center and film propagation over the whole surface, thus enhancing the overall critical heat flux of the whole surface.  相似文献

Jet impingement boiling is very efficient in cooling of hot surfaces as a part of the impinging liquid evaporates. Because of its importance to many cooling procedures, investigations on basic mechanisms of jet impingement boiling heat transfer are needed. Until now, most of the experimental studies, carried out under steady-state conditions, used a heat flux controlled system and were limited by the critical heat flux (CHF). The present study focuses on steady-state experiments along the entire boiling curve for hot plate temperatures of up to 700°C. A test section has been built up simulating a hot plate. It is divided into 8 independently heated modules of 10 mm length to enable local heat transfer measurements. By means of temperature controlled systems for each module local steady-state experiments in the whole range between single phase heat transfer and film boiling are possible. By solving the two dimensional inverse heat conduction problem, the local heat flux and the corresponding wall temperature on the surface of each module can be computed. The measurements show important differences between boiling curves measured at the stagnation line and those obtained in the parallel flow region. At the stagnation line, the transition boiling regime is characterised by very high heat fluxes, extended to large wall superheats. Inversely, boiling curves in the parallel flow region are very near to classical ones obtained for forced convection boiling. The analysis of temperature fluctuations measured at a depth of 0.8 mm from the boiling surface enables some conclusions on the boiling mechanism in the different boiling regimes.  相似文献

This paper presents new experimental results for saturated nucleate boiling of FC72 and FC87 on a horizontal copper disc, at atmospheric pressure, for different degrees of confinement, s, in the range of 0.1-13 mm, and with two kinds of confining element, for low and moderated heat fluxes (?40 kW/m2), on both a downward and an upward facing heating surface. For low heat flux a decrease of the confinement gap causes an enhancement of the boiling and a decrease in the dryout heat flux. A visualization of the boiling phenomenon shows the effect of confinement and heat flux on the liquid-vapor configuration.  相似文献

Performance of horizontal copper heaters with a transverse fin structure was investigated for pool boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux limits. Data were obtained for 5.1 and 7.6 cm diameter structured cooper and brass heaters in saturated R-113 boiling at pressures ranging between 0.037 and 1 atm. The fin structure consisted of 0.16 cm×0.16 cm×0.32 cm high square fins with an interfin spacing of 0.16 cm. Following a similar methodology to Haley and Westwater1, a numerical analysis of the heat transfer phenomenon was performed by solving the one-dimensional fin conduction equation with a non-linear heat transfer boundary condition obtained from the previously reported data for R-113 boiling on plain surfaces. The predictions agreed with the data at the 1 atm pressure levels but showed deviations at the low pressure levels. The results showed that, compared with plain surface heaters of the same diameters the finned structured surfaces investigated: (a) decreased the wall temperature differences for a given heat flux and saturated pool boiling conditions, thus improving the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients, and (b) increased the critical heat flux limits, calculated as the power input divided by the heater projected area, by a factor of 2–2.5.  相似文献

Measurement of wall temperature profile and photographic observation are performed for R-113 subcooled boiling flow in a channel with heat fluxes up to the CHF. The incipient boiling superheats measured are little affected by mass velocity and liquid subcooling. Hysteresis in boiling observed by increasing and decreasing heat flux seems to be ascribed to variation in size of active nucleation cavities on the wall. Increasing heat flux up to the CHF, the bubble density on the heated surface increases and remarkably large coalescent bubbles appear periodically near the heating section outlet.  相似文献

Subcooled flow boiling heat transfer for refrigerant R-134a in vertical cylindrical tubes with 0.83, 1.22 and 1.70 mm internal diameter was experimentally investigated. The effects of the heat flux, q″ = 1–26 kW/m2, mass flux, G = 300–700 kg/m2 s, inlet subcooling, ΔTsub,i = 5–15 °C, system pressure, P = 7.70–10.17 bar, and channel diameter, D, on the subcooled boiling heat transfer were explored in detail. The results are presented in the form of boiling curves and heat transfer coefficients. The boiling curves evidenced the existence of hysteresis when increasing the heat flux until the onset of nucleate boiling, ONB. The wall superheat at ONB was found to be essentially higher than that predicted with correlations for larger tubes. An increase of the mass flux leads, for early subcooled boiling, to an increase in the heat transfer coefficient. However, for fully developed subcooled boiling, increases of the mass flux only result in a slight improvement of the heat transfer. Higher inlet subcooling, higher system pressure and smaller channel diameter lead to better boiling heat transfer. Experimental heat transfer coefficients are compared to predictions from classical correlations available in the literature. None of them predicts the experimental data for all tested conditions.  相似文献

Condensing of a sugar–water solution is a widely used production process, especially in food industry. In this study, boiling temperature and heat transfer of different concentration levels of sugar/water solution is experimentally studied. In the experiment, the pool boiling with constant temperature difference between surface and boiling temperature is investigated. Boiling point of sugar/water solution depends on sugar mass concentration and on vapor phase pressure. A function is suggested to calculation the boiling temperature. The experimental data and the calculated values of boiling temperature are compared. The results are verified with previous investigations. It is determined that the heat flux between surface and sugar/water solution while pool boiling displays a linear relation with water mass concentration in the solution. Heat transfer coefficient could be determined in dependency of surface temperature and sugar mass concentration. Furthermore a function is suggested to predict the heat flux for engineering purpose, which is already used in similar form for pure substances.  相似文献

This study experimentally investigated the flow boiling heat transfer, pressure drop, and flow pattern in a horizontal square minichannel with a hydraulic diameter of 2.0 mm, and the effects of mass flux, vapor quality, heat flux, and refrigerant properties on the flow boiling characteristics were clarified. The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of R32 and R1234yf were measured in a mass flux range of 50–400 kgm−2s−1 at a saturation temperature of 15 °C. The flow pattern of the square minichannel outlet was observed and was classified as plug, wavy, churn, and annular flows. The heat transfer coefficients in the square minichannel were larger than those in the circular minichannel with a similar hydraulic diameter at low mass flux conditions. The heat transfer coefficients of R32 indicated higher values compared with those of R1234yf at same mass flux and qualities. An empirical heat transfer model taking into account the forced convection, nucleate boiling, and thin liquid film evaporation was developed for horizontal square and circular minichannels. The frictional pressure drop of R32 was 1.5–2 times higher than that of R1234yf at same mass flux and vapor quality condition, and the effect of channel shape on the frictional pressure drop was small unlike the boiling heat transfer.  相似文献

Enhancements of nucleate boiling critical heat flux (CHF) using nanofluids in a pool boiling are well known. Considering importance of flow boiling heat transfer in various practical applications, an experimental study on CHF enhancements of nanofluids under convective flow conditions was performed. Changing flow velocity from 0 m/s to 4 m/s, the water boiling on nanoparticles-coated heater was conducted and CHF increased at a given velocity. To understand clearly the mechanism of flow boiling CHF enhancement in nanofluid, the visualization of the nucleate boiling and CHF phenomenon was conducted using the high-speed video camera. It was found that the boiling heat transfer on the nanoparticles-coated heater was lower than that on bare heater, which induced the different flow regime at same heat flux. The different wetting zone on bare and nanoparticles-coated heaters was observed by visualization study. Based the wetting zone fraction, there was brief that the nucleate boiling fraction on heater would be related with the surface wettability. A new concept of flow boiling model was proposed based on the wetting zone fraction. Finally, the effect of nanoparticles deposition layer on the heater was interpreted with the physical mechanisms to increase CHF.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to investigate flow boiling heat transfer to a dielectric fluid in a silicon chip-integrated microchannel heat sink. Twenty-four microchannels, each 389 μm × 389 μm in cross-section, were fabricated into the 12.7 mm × 12.7 mm silicon substrate. High-speed visualizations (at 12,500 frames per second) were performed simultaneously with heat transfer and pressure drop measurements to investigate the physics of flow boiling in parallel microchannel arrays. At low heat fluxes, bubbly flow is dominant, with the bubbles coalescing to form vapor slugs as the heat flux is increased. At high heat fluxes, the flow regimes in the downstream portion of the microchannels are characteristic of alternating wispy-annular flow and churn flow, while flow reversal is observed in the upstream region near the microchannel inlet. Local heat transfer measurements, obtained at three flow rates ranging from 35 to 60 ml/min, show that at lower heat fluxes, the heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing heat flux. The heat transfer coefficient in fully developed boiling is seen to be independent of flow rate in this range. At higher heat fluxes (exceeding 542, 673, 730 kW/m2, respectively, for flow rates of 35, 47 and 60 ml/min), this trend is reversed, and the heat transfer coefficient decreases with further increases in heat flux due to partial dryout in some of the microchannels. Heat fluxes at which fully developed boiling is achieved depend on the flow rate. The pressure drop in fully developed boiling increases with increasing heat flux and is independent of flow rate for the test conditions considered in this work.  相似文献

Surface temperature fluctuations that occur locally underneath departing bubbles in pool boiling are shown to result in local heat transfer coefficients ranging from 1 to 10 kW/cm2. These estimates were reported in the literature involved both numerical and experimental approaches. Significantly higher heat fluxes are associated with flow boiling than pool boiling under similar conditions of wall superheat and liquid subcooling (e.g. at boiling inception and at critical heat flux). These enhancements are primarily caused by the convective transport, acceleration/distortion of the bubble departure process as well as the resultant potential enhancement of the local surface temperature fluctuations. In this study we measure the surface temperature fluctuations using temperature micro/nano-sensors fabricated on a silicon wafer during flow boiling on the silicon wafer which is heated from below. The silicon wafer is clamped on a constant heat flux type calorimeter consisting of a vertical copper cylinder with embedded cartridge heaters and K-type thermocouples. Micro/nano-thermocouples (thin film thermocouples or “TFT”) are fabricated on the surface of the silicon wafer. High speed data acquisition apparatus is used to record temperature data from the TFT at 1 kHz. A fluorinert was used as the test fluid (PF-5060, manufacturer: 3M Co.). The calorimeter and surface temperature measurement apparatus is housed in a test section with glass walls for visual observation. The liquid is pumped from a constant temperature bath to maintain a fixed subcooling during the experiments under steady state conditions. The transient temperature data from the FFT array during flow boiling on the silicon wafer is analyzed using fast Fourier transform (FFT). The FFT data is analyzed as a function of the wall heat flux and wall superheat. The number of temperature peaks in the FFT data is observed to increase with increase in wall heat flux and the peaks are found to cover a wider spectrum with peaks at higher frequencies with enhancement of heat flux. The surface temperature fluctuations, especially at small length and time scales, are perturbed potentially by the coupled hydrodynamic and thermal transport processes, resulting in enhanced local and global heat flux values. Boiling incipience condition and the flow boiling data are compared with correlations reported in the literature.  相似文献

Hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of flow boiling in a non-uniformly heated microchannel were studied. Experiments were performed with a single microchannel and a series of microheaters to study the microscale boiling of water under axially non-uniform heat input conditions. A simultaneous real time visualization of the flow pattern was performed with the measurement of experimental parameters. Tests were performed over a mass flux of 309.8 kg/m2 s, and heat flux of 200–600 kW/m2. Test results showed different fluctuations of heated wall temperature, pressure drop, and mass flux with variations of the heat input along the flow direction. The unique periodic flow boiling in a single microchannel was observed at all heat flux conditions except for the increasing heat input distribution case which is the nearly uniform effective heat input distribution condition. The instability is correlated with flow pattern transition. For the nearly uniform effective heating condition, no fluctuation of the wall temperature, pressure drop, or mass flux was observed. We can relieve the instability by increasing total heat input along the flow direction and predict the instability using the transition criteria and flow pattern map.  相似文献

The effect of drag-reducing polymeric additives on the critical heat flux and minimum film boiling temperature in subcooled pool boiling of water has been experimentally examined. Three water-soluble polymers, viz. a polyethylene oxide (Aldrich No. 18946-4), a polyacrylamide (Separan AP-30), and a galactomannan polysaccharide (Galactasol-211) have been examined at concentrations of 10, 50, and 100 wppm. The experiment is performed by quenching a hot brass sphere in an isothermal pool of the fluid to be examined and obtaining the corresponding boiling curve. The experiments have been conducted at atmospheric pressure with a pool temperature of 90°C. The results show that the critical heat flux increases by more than 50% while the minimum film boiling temperature increases by more than 110°C when concentrations of 100 wppm of polyox or guar gum are used. For separan solutions, the critical heat flux and minimum film boiling temperature are lower than those for water and go through a minimum at a concentration of ~10 wppm; the maximum reductions are about 73% and 34°C respectively.  相似文献
