Sedimentation of particles in an inclined vessel is predicted using a two-dimensional, incompressible, multiphase particle-in-cell (MP-PIC) method. The numerical technique solves the governing equations of the fluid phase using a continuum model and those of the particle phase using a Lagrangian model. Mapping particle properties to an Eulerian grid and then mapping back computed stress tensors to particle positions allows a complete solution of sedimentation from a dilute mixture to close-pack. The solution scheme allows for distributions of types, sizes and density of particles, with no numerical diffusion from the Lagrangian particle calculations. The MP-PIC solution method captures the physics of inclined sedimentation which includes the clarified fluid layer under the upper wall, a dense mixture layer above the bottom wall, and instabilities which produce waves at the clarified fluid and suspension interface. Measured and calculated sedimentation rates are in good agreement.  相似文献

Governing equations for a two‐phase 3D helical pipe flow of a non‐Newtonian fluid with large particles are derived in an orthogonal helical coordinate system. The Lagrangian approach is utilized to model solid particle trajectories. The interaction between solid particles and the fluid that carries them is accounted for by a source term in the momentum equation for the fluid. The force‐coupling method (FCM), developed by M.R. Maxey and his group, is adopted; in this method the momentum source term is no longer a Dirac delta function but is spread on a numerical mesh by using a finite‐sized envelop with a spherical Gaussian distribution. The influence of inter‐particle and particle–wall collisions is also taken into account. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The micro-and macro-time scales in two-phaseturbulent channel flows are investigated using the direct numerical simulation and the Lagrangian particle trajectorymethods for the fluid-and the particle-phases,respectively.Lagrangian and Eulerian time scales of both phases are calculated using velocity correlation functions.Due to flowanisotropy,micro-time scales are not the same with the theoretical estimations in large Reynolds number(isotropic) turbulence.Lagrangian macro-time scales of particle-phaseand of fluid-phase seen by particles are both dependent onparticle Stokes number. The fluid-phase Lagrangian integral time scales increase with distance from the wall, longerthan those time scales seen by particles. The Eulerian integral macro-time scales increase in near-wall regions but decrease in out-layer regions. The moving Eulerian time scalesare also investigated and compared with Lagrangian integraltime scales, and in good agreement with previous measurements and numerical predictions. For the fluid particles themicro Eulerian time scales are longer than the Lagrangianones in the near wall regions, while away from the walls themicro Lagrangian time scales are longer. The Lagrangianintegral time scales are longer than the Eulerian ones.Theresults are useful for further understanding two-phase flowphysics and especially for constructing accurate predictionmodels of inertial particle dispersion.  相似文献

Modelling of particle-wall collisions in confined gas-particle flows   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
This paper demonstrates that numerical simulations of confined particulate two-phase flows require a detailed modelling of particle—wall collisions which includes the wall surface structure and the particle shape. These effects are taken into account by “irregular bouncing” models which are based on the statistical treatment of the collision process. In this study, results obtained using various “irregular bouncing” models based on the impulse equations for a particle—wall collision are considered and compared with experimental observations. The wall roughness is simulated by assuming that the particle collides with a virtual wall which has a randomly distributed inclination with respect to the plane, smooth wall. A Gaussian distribution for this random inclination showed the best agreement with experimental results. Numerical predictions of a turbulent two—phase flow in a vertical channel, where the particle phase is treated using a Lagrangian approach, showed that the different models applied for a particle-wall collision have a strong effect on the particle velocity fluctuations and the mass flux profiles in the region of fully developed flow. The numerical simulations using the irregular bouncing models yielded considerably higher values for the particle velocity fluctuations, which also agreed better with the experimental values. This effect was most pronounced for large particles, where the distance they need to respond to the fluid flow is larger than the characteristic dimension of the confinement. On the other hand, the motion of small particles is less affected by the choice of the wall-collision model. These effects of the wall roughness on the velocity fluctuations of the dispersed phase have not been considered in previous studies using irregular bouncing models.  相似文献

A Lagrangian–Eulerian model for the dispersion of solid particles in a two‐dimensional, incompressible, turbulent flow is reported and validated. Prediction of the continuous phase is done by solving an Eulerian model using a control‐volume finite element method (CVFEM). A Lagrangian model is also applied, using a Runge–Kutta method to obtain the particle trajectories. The effect of fluid turbulence upon particle dispersion is taken into consideration through a simple stochastic approach. Validation tests are performed by comparing predictions for both phases in a particle‐laden, plane mixing layer airflow with corresponding measurements formerly reported by other authors. Even though some limitations are detected in the calculation of particle dispersion, on the whole the validation results are rather successful. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A model of laminar flow of a highly concentrated suspension is proposed. The model includes the equation of motion for the mixture as a whole and the transport equation for the particle concentration, taking into account a phase slip velocity. The suspension is treated as a Newtonian fluid with an effective viscosity depending on the local particle concentration. The pressure of the solid phase induced by particle-particle interactions and the hydrodynamic drag force with account of the hindering effect are described using empirical formulas. The partial-slip boundary condition for the mixture velocity on the wall models the formation of a slip layer near the wall. The model is validated against experimental data for rotational Couette flow, a plane-channel flow with neutrally buoyant particles, and a fully developed flow with heavy particles in a horizontal pipe. Based on the comparison with the experimental data, it is shown that the model predicts well the dependence of the pressure difference on the mixture velocity and satisfactorily describes the dependence of the delivered particle concentration on the flow velocity.  相似文献

In this paper we present a two-dimensional numerical study of the viscoelastic effects on the sedimentation of particles in the presence of solid walls or another particle. The Navier-Stokes equations coupled with an Oldroyd-B model are solved using a finite-element method with the EVSS formalism, and the particles are moved according to their equations of motion. In a vertical channel filled with a viscoelastic fluid, a particle settling very close to one side wall experiences a repulsion from the wall; a particle farther away from the wall is attracted toward it. Thus a settling particle will approach an eccentric equilibrium position, which depends on the Reynolds and Deborah numbers. Two particles settling one on top of the other attract and form a doublet if their initial separation is not too large. Two particles settling side by side approach each other and the doublet also rotates till the line of centers is aligned with the direction of sedimentation. The particle-particle interactions are in qualitative agreement with experimental observations, while the wall repulsion has not been documented in experiments. The driving force for lateral migrations is shown to correlate with the pressure distribution on the particle's surface. As a rule, viscoelasticity affects the motion of particles by modifying the pressure distribution on their surface. The direct contribution of viscoelastic normal stresses to the force and torque is not important.  相似文献

We perform direct numerical simulation of three‐dimensional turbulent flows in a rectangular channel, with a lattice Boltzmann method, efficiently implemented on heavily parallel general purpose graphical processor units. After validating the method for a single fluid, for standard boundary layer problems, we study changes in mean and turbulent properties of particle‐laden flows, as a function of particle size and concentration. The problem of physical interest for this application is the effect of water droplets on the turbulent properties of a high‐speed air flow, near a solid surface. To do so, we use a Lagrangian tracking approach for a large number of rigid spherical point particles, whose motion is forced by drag forces caused by the fluid flow; particle effects on the latter are in turn represented by distributed volume forces in the lattice Boltzmann method. Results suggest that, while mean flow properties are only slightly affected, unless a very large concentration of particles is used, the turbulent vortices present near the boundary are significantly damped and broken down by the turbulent motion of the heavy particles, and both turbulent Reynolds stresses and the production of turbulent kinetic energy are decreased because of the particle effects. We also find that the streamwise component of turbulent velocity fluctuations is increased, while the spanwise and wall‐normal components are decreased, as compared with the single fluid channel case. Additionally, the streamwise velocity of the carrier (air) phase is slightly reduced in the logarithmic boundary layer near the solid walls. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, a direct numerical simulation of particle-laden flow in a flat plate boundary layer is performed, using the Eulerian–Lagrangian point-particle approach. This is, as far as we know, the first simulation of a particle-laden spatially-developing turbulent boundary layer with two-way coupling. A local minimum of the particle number density is observed in the close vicinity of the wall. The present simulation results indicate that the inertial particles displace the quasi-streamwise vortices towards the wall, which, in turn, enhance the mean streamwise fluid velocity. As a result, the skin-friction coefficient is increased whereas the boundary layer integral thicknesses are reduced. The presence of particles augments the streamwise fluctuating velocity in the near-wall region but attenuates it in the outer layer. Nevertheless, the wall-normal and spanwise velocity fluctuations are significantly damped, and so is the Reynolds stress. In addition, the combined effect of a reduced energy production and an increased viscous dissipation leads to the attenuation of the turbulent kinetic energy.  相似文献

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a useful technique for simulating multiphase flows and modeling complex physics. Specifically, we use LBM combined with a direct-forcing (DF) immersed boundary (IB) method to simulate fluid–particle interactions in two-phase particulate flows. Two grids are used in the simulation: a fixed uniform Eulerian grid for the fluid phase and a Lagrangian grid that is attached to and moves with the immersed particles. Forces are calculated at each Lagrangian point. To exchange numerical information between the two grids, discrete delta functions are used. The resulting DF IB-LBM approach is then successfully applied to a variety of reference flows, namely the sedimentation of one and two circular particles in a vertical channel, the sedimentation of one or two spheres in an enclosure, and a neutrally buoyant prolate spheroid in a Couette flow. This last application proves that the developed approach can be used also for non-spherical particles. The three forcing schemes and the different factors affecting the simulation (added mass effect, corrected radius) are also discussed.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of particle shape on the transportation mechanism in well-drilling using a three-dimensional model that couples computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the discrete element method (DEM). This numerical method allows us to incorporate the fluid–particle interactions (drag force, contact force, Saffman lift force, Magnus lift force, buoyancy force) using momentum exchange and the non-Newtonian behavior of the fluid. The interactions of particle−particle, particle−wall, and particle−drill pipe are taken into account with the Hertz–Mindlin model. We compare the transport of spheres with non-spherical particles (non-smooth sphere, disc, and cubic) constructed via the multi-sphere method for a range of fluid inlet velocities and drill pipe inclination angles. The simulations are carried out for laboratory-scale drilling configurations. Our results demonstrate good agreement with published experimental data. We evaluate the fluid–particle flow patterns, the particle velocities, and the particle concentration profiles. The results reveal that particle sphericity plays a major role in the fluid–solid interaction. The traditional assumption of an ideal spherical particle may cause inaccurate results.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulations (LES) of particle-laden turbulent flows are presented in order to investigate the effects of particle response time on the dispersion patterns of a space developing flow with an obstruction, where solid particles are injected inside the wake of an obstacle [Vincont, J.Y., Simoens, S., Ayrault M., Wallace, J.M., 2000. Passive scalar dispersion in a turbulent boundary layer from a line source at the wall and downstream of an obstacle. J. Fluid Mech. 424, 127–167]. The numerical method is based on a fully explicit fractional step approach and finite-differences on Cartesian grids, using the immersed boundary method (IBM) to represent the existence of solid obstacles. Two different turbulence models have been tested, the classical Smagorinsky turbulence model and the filtered structure function model. The dispersed phase was modelled either by an Eulerian approach or a Lagrangian particle tracking scheme of solid particles with Stokes numbers in the range St = 0–25, assuming one-way coupling between the two phases. A very good agreement was observed between the Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches. The effect of particle size was found to significantly differentiate the dispersion pattern for the inhomogeneous flow over the obstacle. Although in homogeneous flows like particle-laden turbulent channels near-wall particle clustering increases monotonically with particle size, for the examined flow over an obstacle, preferential concentration effects were stronger only for an intermediate range of Stokes numbers.  相似文献

Interaction between turbulence and particles is investigated in a channel flow. The fluid motion is calculated using direct numerical simulation (DNS) with a lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, and particles are tracked in a Lagrangian framework through the action of force imposed by the fluid. The particle diameter is smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale, and the point force is used to represent the feedback force of particles on the turbulence. The effects of particles on the turbulence and skin friction coefficient are examined with different particle inertias and mass loadings. Inertial particles suppress intensities of the spanwise and wall-normal components of velocity, and the Reynolds shear stress. It is also found that, relative to the reference particle-free flow, the overall mean skin-friction coefficient is reduced by particles. Changes of near wall turbulent structures such as longer and more regular streamwise low-speed streaks and less ejections and sweeps are the manifestation of drag reduction.  相似文献
